NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL OF
THE MALAY COLLEGE KUALA KANGSAR
At one time its invention would be
considered as a great breakthrough in mankind.
Over time, it would become common-place. Today,
the greatest innovations are the ones we take for
granted, like light bulbs, analgesic or painkillers,
and the telephone. The human capacity to invent,
develop, modify and innovate has helped us to
enjoy this comfortable and convenient lifestyle that
we lead today.
All great inventors share one thing in
common. Most were once school-going kids,
picking up the basic concepts and forming
ideas through formal and informal learning. The
participants of the 7th MCYDS 2014 are at this
same stage where we try to make sense of the
technology around us. Coupled with an intrinsic
interest in a certain field, we look deeper into
the workings of things around us, and we try to
figure out how things can be further improved.
Subconsciously, we are trying to innovate on what
had been invented.
Anand Bin Baharuddin, Principal of MCKK,
Organizing Chairman of 7th MCYDS 2014
This year we have scrutinized our
selection more thoroughly. Those invited to the 7th
MCYDS 2014 had already shown their invention
and innovation capacities at national and even
at international level. We gather the great minds
from all corners to share and highlight each one’s
project. We may marvel at what we may see, and
I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if innovative
ideas can be triggered when great minds discuss,
thus leading to the next version in the invention
and innovation cycles.
The student-committee members had
started their planning many months ago. I wish to
thank them for their diligence. Credit is also due
to the group of teacher-advisors for their patience
and perseveance. My indebted gratitude goes
to the many sponsors who have enabled us to
maintain our targeted standards. An academicbased programme would be meaningless without
mind-shifting inputs from our esteemed speakers.
But most important of all, my appreciation to all
the participants who are gathered here in the spirit
of knowledge sharing, leading up to the building of
new knowledge.
ARRIVAL OF
THE DELEGATES
FRIDAY, 20TH JUNE 2014
20 days past the month of June, the day finally arrived. The Malay
College Development Summit (MCYDS) is back for the year 2014! ‘Invention
and Innovations’ also known as the I2, create a motion for a discussion for the
goods of the mankind. Flights from all over the South-East Asia, consisting of
five countries, India, Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei and Thailand landed safe
and sound. The first arrival was the Indian delegates, arrived at 5.55 a.m., and
the last one was the delegates from Philippines. All delegates were excited as
they set course to the Sri Enstek Hotel, Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, specifically, 292
km from MCKK.
Later that day, they got the chance to have their hands on our local mall
and some of our countless local delicacies. Indeed, their hearts are filled with
satisfactory, as they were encouraged to try new things; foods and cultures.
During the noon, those who arrived went to Seremban, looking for food to ease
their raging bellies. Eventually during the night, everyone was exhausted. Some
of them travel across the boarders, some of them across the seas and some of
them across the continent! To fresh themselves up before heading to MCKK the
next morning, indeed, sleeping is their best friend at the moment!
LET'S GO
BREAK THE ICE!
SATURDAY, 21ST JUNE 2014
As the Kuala Kangsar sky turned orange, the delegates prepared for the
games hour session at 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m..Wearing their sports clothes,
the delegates gathered at ‘C’ field and lined up according to their beloved
schools. The delegates were explained by the liaison officer about the games
session. They all had the spirit inside them to play their heart out. They were
divided into four groups and each group played different games. They played
dodge ball, coconut bowling, petanque and of course football. This year, the
football game was different because only the girls could score and the boys
had to wear ‘kain pelekat’ which was a Malay traditional clothing. Although
the boys had to wear a ‘kain pelekat’ the boys were still better than the girls.
The delegates had fun playing dodge ball because everyone kept tripping and
falling. Unfortunately some of the delegates had a hard time dodging the ball.
For the coconut bowling, the delegates were divided into 3 groups. As they took
turns bowling the coconut, they had a difficult time hitting the bottles because
of the irregular coconut shape but some of them managed to hit a lot of bottles.
Unlike petanque, which requires skills, the delegates needed power to win the
games. The delegates laughed and smiled when they played all the exciting
games. As the sun slipped away below the horizon, everybody took a group
photo together at the Peace Wall. At the end of the day, delegates had a whale
of a time.

A JOURNEY TO
THE HIGHLANDS
SUNDAY, 22ND JUNE 2014
Innovation does not stop at technological, daily products that we use.
It is not just about advanced gadgetry like iPhones or computerized gaming
such as Call of Duty. In fact, innovation is limitless. It has no bounds for it as
innovation sparks at anything in life. To grasp that concept in The Malay College
Youth Development Summit 2014, the delegates were taken to Cameron
Highlands. No, it is not to sightsee the mountains but to study the innovation
that is currently rampant within the agricultural industry at The Malaysian
Agriculture Research and Development Institute (MARDI). This branch of the
government specializes in the research of agriculture, food and agro-based
industries. Hence, they are the subjects for the delegates to observe on.
Along the field trip, the delegates were dazzled by the technology
MARDI has developed. Most of the projects conducted by them were using
complex technological instruments accompanied by advanced methodologies.
One prime example was the hydroponic planting method. The delegates were
stunned by it as the method does not require soil to nurture the plants it was
proven by a growing cabbage which had not a single speck of soil with it.
Besides, the delegates found many discoveries that seemed to be technology
from the future. They were thoroughly explained by the guide accompanying
us. She explained all the physics and chemistry involved in any particular
plantation.
Since we wanted to make worth of the moment we had at Cameron
Highlands, the delegates went on a tour around the area. They were brought
to the beautifully vast green tea farm. It was utterly a sight rarely seen by the
delegates. To treasure it, everyone strutted their stuff by striking their best
poses in front of the camera. They wanted to make memorabilia out of this
opportunity, so they took the easy way out by taking pictures of it.
Since everyone wanted a break, they cooled their heads off by having
ice cream at The Green View Garden. Next, they observed some magnificently
exotic flowers grown there. Then, the delegates made their way back to Ipoh
when the sun started to set to have dinner.

OPENING CEREMONY OF 7TH MCYDS
MONDAY, 23 JUNE 2014
i2: Invention & Innovation
RD
A new day starts and a new spirit arise in everyone. The MCYDS
opening ceremony was initiated by the chairman of The MCKK Parents Teachers
Association, Mr. Ahmad Redza bin Khairuddin, accompanied by the headmaster
of MCKK, Mr. Anand bin Baharuddin, Ahmad Izzat, student chairman of MCYDS
and Aiman Uzahir, coordinator of MCYDS.
The event commenced at 8:30 a.m. Speeches by the men on stage
were really inspiring. Izzat gave a speech to remind of the purpose of the
summit; to fulfill the need for a more innovative society. As for Mr. Anand’s, he
identified that although the crowd setup was compartmentalized, he believed
that students will linger amongst each other. Furthermore he pointed out one
other aim of the summit, which is to improvise other schools by actualizing
the ideas shared during the summit. Finally, Dato’ Ahmad Redza advised the
delegates when they will be pursuing innovation. He said that one should never
forget to be humane, as innovation itself had led to many calamities such as
wars and environmental destruction.

After officiating the summit, everyone clapped and cheered as they were
all excited for this year’s MCYDS and couldn’t wait for the turn up of events.
The ceremony was then continued with two epic performances to brighten the
audience’s hearts. Firstly, SK Sultan Idris’s Angklung Ultimate Team performed
a few recognizable songs with their angklungs such as Can’t Help Falling in
Love by Elvis Presley. They were accompanied by a few teachers from their
school who played other instrument such as the drums and electric keyboard.
Their performance kept the audience’s eyes wide open. Then, SERATAS staged
a performance as well by conducting a zapin dance. The dance introduced the
foreign delegates of the many cultures of Malaysia. After the show of events,
everyone had refreshments to loosen themselves up.
DIALOGUE I;
'Developing Talent to Innovate'
MONDAY, 23RD JUNE 2014
Though innovation comes naturally, we need to understand what it
truly means. We need to see it from many perspectives innovation poses to
get a better picture of it. That way, we can unlock our true potential when we
comprehend it right up to its core.
After the opening ceremony, the delegates prepared themselves for a
round of discussion with a dialogue session. Handling the session was Tuan
Haji Abdullah Arshad from The Malaysian Innovation Agency. He kick-started
things up by explaining the history of most renowned innovators. These
innovators came about from a history filled with thought and knowledge.
Basically, he said, innovaors are born from the talents that were developed
especially during the school era. During that time, students tend to think wiser,
day-by-day, trying to solve daily problems while subconsciously improving
their intellect.
Besides, students also have a tendency to brainstorm about problems.
However, Tua Haji Abdullah Arshad also told that those who frequent
brainstorming will grow into one of the many most successful innovators in the
future. They will be the ones inventing applications that will ease mankind. In
fact, we may be looking ahead to something more than smart phones.
After the slot, the audience was given the chance to question him on
the topic. For every question thrown at him, he answered flawlessly with replies
that suffice the audience’s needs.

DIALOGUE II;
'Invention & Innovation'
MONDAY, 23RD JUNE 2014
With innovation comes development. However, development can take
many forms in this world. The results that follow after any innovative breakthrough
depends on the invention we create. Hence, to grasp the proper understanding
of innovation, a lecture was given by a lecturer, Prof. Dr. Mohamad Kamal from
Universiti Malaysia Kelantan to talk on the matter.
Throughout his lecture, he gave many notable ideals. Primarily, he talked
on the market and how it draws people to innovate. The economy requests that
innovation suffices their need for a more efficient and productive method of
creating products. Through innovation, the quality of the product has improved
vastly compared to the 19th century. Besides, the rate production of the car
differs from before. Then, only a few thousands of cars can be produced every
year. Nowadays, hundreds of thousands of car can be produced per annum
with the aid of pre-programmed robots and advanced appliances. And this is
just the automobile industry; food processing has also been on the rise ever
since innovation is given the spotlight by society. Hence, market pull requires
the people to innovate for them.
QUOTE
Simplicity is the
ultimate sophistication.
Leonardo da Vinci
Market pull also draws out technological push. As industries demand
for more high-end appliances and tools, the innovation sector has greatly
developed. The technology brought forth from the research with the industry
also manifested itself into other areas of innovation. Therefore, it is considered
killing two birds with one stone; in one hand, we improve the primary focus of a
project while, subsequently, improving another. For example, with the need for
less carbon-emitting companies, car companies have taken the technology to
reduce the carbon emission into their cars with the catalytic converter. Hence,
one small step for innovation is a giant leap for technology.
With the end of the lecture, the lecture is open up to the floor. Many were
inquisitive of innovation and asked the lecturer. To everybody’s surprise, even the
principal, Mr Anand bin Baharuddin, questioned the lecturer about incubators.
He gallantly answered everybody’s questions with sufficient information. With
the end of the Q&A session, everybody gained a lot to understand more about
innovation.

COMMUNITY SERVICE;
AT KUALA KANGSAR HOSPITAL
MONDAY, 23RD JUNE 2014
The participants had a healthy, short walk to the Hospital of Kuala
Kangsar and arrived at the hospital approximately at 5.00 pm. The participants
were shortly briefed about the hospital and were divided into four group which
is A,B,C and D. Group A had lots of chatter with the patients. Then, as Group B
went to Wad Melor which is the ward that nurse special condition babies, there
was one time where the baby nearly cried and all the participants tried to calm
her. The only delegate that was able to calm that baby was Karl, a delegate
from Philippine. Besides, Group C had a chat about the beauty of giving birth
with the patients. Finally, Group D had some problem with communicating, so
our committee stepped in to translate. Before departing, the delegates gave
baskets of fruits as a gift to all the patients.
After that, the delegates made a quick stroll from the children’s ward
to the old people ward. They were told to be quiet and took precaution as the
old people needed to be jubilant. The scene in the ward were quite nostalgic
as the delegates took their time having a chat with the old people, trying to feel
their anguish and need to be adored, to be acknowledge by the society. There
was an old Indian man who showed the delegates a ‘peace sign’ to cheer the
delegates. A girl delegates tried to hug a crippled, 83 years old man who can’t
even talk but still manage to portray a happy, weak smile. An old man in a
wheelchair was happily taking the opportunities by having a storytelling session
with the delegates. Some of the delegates nearly cried just by understanding
the feeling of these old people. With that the journey to the hospital came to an
end and the participants walk their way to their hostel.

MCYDS 2014 CONFERENCE;
'i2; Invention & Innovation'
TUESDAY, 24TH JUNE 2014
This year’s MCYDS conference was held in Auditorium Tun Abdul
Razak with the goal of exchanging ideas and innovation each school have
in their respective place. Each school had their own representative to give a
presentation about their unique and innovative approach towards invention.
Each representative were given a maximum of 5 minutes to present their own
ideas about innovation & invention and another 3 minutes for a question &
answer session regarding their ideas. Interestingly, the 5 minutes allocation time
had to be broken by most presenters as there were too much ideas to be shared
and talk about. Starting from the ‘Arriba Bank’ from The Philippines delegates
to the ‘Putra Planz’ biodegradable plastic vase of SMS Syed Putra delegates,
each of them managed to present out their ideas effectively and some even
managed to make the audience laugh to their heart's content!
Most of the delegates ideas were focused mainly on the concept of being
environmentally friendly and reducing pollution in their product or prototypes
while some were on monitoring children .After that, all the delegates were given
1 minute to brainstorm on the motion ‘Is Invention & Innovation Essential’ and
‘How Do People Communicate Without The Help Of Invention’ and they would
be picked randomly according to countries. Even though the time allocated
were really short, the one randomly picked still managed to give an interesting
opinion of their own. One delegate from each country would be asked to make
a summary to conclude the event and with that the event conclude with all the
participants benefiting hugely from it.

FIELD TRIP;
TO DreamEDGE, TAIPING
TUESDAY, 24TH JUNE 2014
To further strengthen the will of the future innovators to innovate, a
trip was conducted to the DreamEDGE Center, Taiping. It is a firm that designs
technologies for contractors. Periodically, they take contracts from regular
overseas clients such as Japan.
At first, the delegates partially underestimated the capability Malaysia
has to be a innovative. However, they were dumbfounded with what they
spectated. In the firm, the guide that was with them told the use of many types
of applications for design. Certain softwares were needed for certain projects.
For each of the project assigned, 3 to 4 engineers will be tasked for it. As the
guide showed how the engineers discuss, plan and sketch the project, the
delegates stood in amazement at the brilliant intellectuals doing their job.
After the trip, many of the delegates made a realization that the world is
going forward faster than they expected. They never knew how technologically
advanced civilization has become, especially Malaysia. Therefore, they had
made a new stance in their life; they now have an urge to innovate better
products and overcoming the competition. Although they believe that it is a
long way to go, but they stand firm on their ground and believe in pursing to be
the best innovator in the future.

MCYDS 2014
PROJECT EXHIBITION
WEDNESDAY, 25TH JUNE 2014
Innovation is not just limited to some, it is open to all. So, the MCYDS
participants opened up their doors to the world by showcasing their ambitious
projects in an exhibition. Though it was held at the mere Tun Abdul Razak
Auditorium’s corridor, everyone managed to take a peek at what has materialized
out of the minds of the future innovators.
Starting from the advocated of The Malay College Kuala Kangsar, they
previewed the ‘Agromakit’. It was systematical design aimed for the agricultural
industry. The project, in retrospect, nurtures plants with the use of soil, one of
the most basic components for a plant to survive, with this outstanding project,
they hoped for a technological breakthrough with it.
QUOTE

Other local schools also portrayed their brilliance with their projects.
We had SMS Tapah showing how fibre glass was made out of mengkuang
leaves, Tunku Kurshiah College making sun block out of aloe vera and SMK
Ta’ayah explaining the ‘Green Mat Bakh’ concept, which was a kitchen aimed
to reduce carbon emissions. Many technological breakthroughs bewildered
yet stunned the observers. They did not expect for the young minds to come
up with something so extraordinary. Their jaws also dropped as they heard
the ideals being explained by the advocates of the project themselves. They
explained the development of the project, the chemistry behind project and the
outcomes it can produce. Everyone admired their work while taking the resumé
made available for them,
The surprise did not just end there. Other countries also had their share
of the spotlight with their projects. We had The Phillipines had the ‘Aribba
Bank’, the Indonesians with the pillow bag and many other astonishing projects
made for display. It showed how rapid innovation is amongst the neighbouring
countries of Malaysia.
With this exhibition, everyone knew how amazing innovation is.
Everyone also agreed to the terms that innovation is crucial for the sake of the
comfort of society, especially themselves.

CLOSING CEREMONY OF 7TH MCYDS
i2: Invention & Innovation
WEDNESDAY, 25TH JUNE 2014
The moment everybody wish for had come, and for some people, it
brought a portion of sadness that will dwells in the heart-The Closing Ceremony.
Again, it was held at the most exclusive place in college, The Auditorium! Before
anything starts, the delegate of Malaysia, or to be specific, a representative
from the college, presents the resolutions or outcome from this summit.
Next, some entertainments! However, this time the delegates brought
something special for the collegian, their cultures! Instead of carrying more
items for exhibitions, or even sales, the brought along their traditional clothing
according to their respective cultures! Eventually, the moment we had waited
for this whole week had come, performances! Country by country, each the
delegates perform a magnificent show. From dances, to singing. The passion
they possess during the performance reflects their beautiful cultures and how
much the care about it! Finally, the peak of this event had arrived, performance
from the Malaysian delegates. Most of them did the Dikir Barat and some
of them sang the song ‘1 Malaysia’. However, the crowd did not stop there.
Finally, yet importantly, before the delegates return to their home, everyone in
the auditorium was then entertained by the Malay traditional martial art, Silat
Cekak!

TOURING AROUND
THE ROYAL TOWN OF KUALA KANGSAR
WEDNESDAY, 25TH JUNE 2014
Moving on, the delegates were brought to the Royal Town of Kuala
Kangsar for a visit. Excited and delighted, they were first taken to Ubudiah
Mosque. Amazed with the magnificent art of the dome, most of them did not
waste this golden chance and snap a photo. A single moment carries a memory
of eternity! Later on, they we brought to the nearest food court; Lembah. Lembah
is amongst the famous place or ‘hotspot’ for the collegians themselves to fill in
their bellies. Hungry and confused, the delegates we allowed to pick food on
their own in the first place, but then, some of them did not manage to pick any,
so some of the committees tried to help them out. Perhaps some of these foods
are not available back there in their respective countries, but unbelievably, they
did tried every single food and drinks available. From icy cold ABC, to hot and
spicy char-kuey-teow, and the feedback is; THUMBS UP!
Finally, before heading back to college, they were brought to the
riverside to snap a few more photos. Always remember, a single moment carries
a memory for eternity!

EXPERIENCING SCIENCE
AT THE PETROSAINS THURSDAY, 26
TH
JUNE 2014
To cherish the final moments of the summit, the delegates were exclusively
taken to the Petrosains centre at Suria KLCC. They would spend the next
few hours engrossed with scientific discoveries and innovation located in the
centre.
The deleates were first exposed to the natural history of Malaysia, dating back
to thousands of years ago, with a cargo ride. The movie shown then progressed
further into the future to show the development happening in Malaysia. The
movie also drew the line of comparison between just a few decades ago and
present. The delegates were astonished by this fact as they never expected
development to take shape so fast.
They were then exposed to many innovative discoveries and technologies
Malaysia has succeeded. There were many fields in the country that has vastly
transformed from ,somewhat, medieval to futuristic design. The delegates
simulated an arrival to the oil rig with being on an oil rig out at sea. They spotted
safety uniforms, a process on changing the pipeline and the extraction of fossil
fuels itself. Besides, they had a trip down the automotive industry, peculiarly
in automotive sports. Delegates got to know more about Formula 1 its origins,
development and current technology. They also took the Formula 1 for a spin
in the Formula 1 simulator. Continuing the journey, they saw more of innovation
that is robustly occurring within other areas of the country. They were inspired
by the challenges the innovators face when they were on the innovation road.
Though the challenges were extravagant, they overcomed it with intelligence
and diligence they had within themselves.
After the trip, everyone gained more experience with innovation. Petrosains
was a great platform for the delegates as it was able to portray innovation in
a magnificent and attractive way for them to comprehend and implement in
their lives.

FAREWELL MCKK!
SELAMAT TINGGAL MALAYSIA!
FRIDAY, 27TH JUNE 2014
It has been a memorable experience for the participants of the 2014 Malay College
Youth Development Summit. From evening
games and performances, to contentious
discussions
and
challenging
questions,
everyone had their point of view of the summit.
Nevertheless, I was precious. However, every
story must come to an end.
That
Sunday
morning,
all
delegates departed home to their
respective nations. The Bruneians,
Filipinos, Siamese, Indians as well as Indonesians left Malaysia with great memories
and heaps of knowledge. Ranging from 8 to 11 o’clock in the morning, the delegates
lifted off to their respective countries. Goodbyes and farewell hugs were all over the
airport. Some of them actually shed some tears there. Right before the committees
left them, they all had a photo-shoot in front of the entrance of the brand new KLIA 2.
They really had so much fun and gained tons of knowledge throughout the summit.
During the curse of the summit, friendships had been fostered, ideas had
been shared and memories had been made. The summit will continue to be cherished
in the hearts of many as a stepping stone not only for their innovative goals but also
for a stronger friendship in the future. All in all, the summit was a success and will
surely be a once in a lifetime experience to the participants.
