2015, and our newest fosters from Red Dog
Farm. Tweedle Dee (known as Dee) is a quiet,
gentle, loving petite girl with fur as soft as a
rabbit’s. Her brother, Tweedle Dum, (known as
Tweeds), is more social and relaxed around
people. They do like to be petted which starts
their purr machines. However, they are still
a little skittish if you go to pet them quickly.
They are typical kittens and love to play...they
really like to play tag with each other. Tweeds
is a “talker” and loves to tell you about his
day. They are both waiting patiently for their
own forever family.

Help For the Healers
“H
ow do you do it?” As a veterinarian, I am asked this question
often about my job. I find myself as a collector of stories.
Each animal I see has their own story - many with wonderful
outcomes but, unfortunately, some with sad endings. I learn from
these stories and my practice is shaped and changed by each one. Each
story stays with me and, if allowed, each one could become a weight
on my shoulders, gradually burdening me more and more.
My practice works with some wonderful rescue organizations,
but primarily I work with individual owners. As a veterinarian, I am
here to help guide owners through difficult decision making, but
ultimately the decision is theirs, not mine. Rescuers have a much more
challenging position. They are faced with directly making difficult
decisions every day as they try to help as many animals as possible
with often very limited resources. For most rescuers, they have other
jobs and families they are supporting - leaving little money and time
to do this work that is so emotionally and physically exhausting. They
are caregivers in every aspect of their lives, but they also must care for
themselves to be able to care for others.
“How do you do it?” This is the question that many of us in
caregiving roles are often asked, but pay little attention to until we
reach the point of questioning whether we can continue doing what
we are doing. That point is one weighed down with emotional and
physical exhaustion from years of putting the needs of others ahead
of our own personal needs. It has a name and it’s called compassion
fatigue. It’s something that affects anyone in a caregiving role: nurses,
veterinarians, rescue and shelter workers, doctors, and even those
caring for loved ones. Regardless of your role the realities, the stresses
and the strategies to handle it are the same.
As with all problems, the first step is recognizing there is a problem
by recognizing the symptoms.
Symptoms of compassion fatigue:
• Exhaustion: mental and physical
• Anger, irritability, excessive complaining
• Chronic physical ailments
• Difficulty concentrating
• Withdrawn, isolation from others
• Compulsive behaviors: overspending, overeating
• Feelings of being overwhelmed, sadness, depression, anxiety
• Diminished sense of enjoyment: with work and personal life
It’s true, rescuers and animal care workers typically get into this
work because the animals are what brings us peace. Initially, this
work is our “time out”, our escape from the other stressors in our
lives. But this work requires incredible amounts of giving on our end.
Imagine an “emotional bucket”. Caregiving requires us to fill up our
“emotional bucket” and then empty out, but we must be able to fill it
up again!
Compassion fatigue is the act of emptying out the “emotional
bucket” repeatedly without refilling it. If we don’t take time for
ourselves, we become depleted of body, mind and spirit and will have
nothing left to give. The art of “filling up” is finding what makes us
whole and what brings us peace. For everyone it is different - it may be
running, yoga, a hike in the woods, reading or socializing with friends
and family. It may take time to find that one thing that is your passion,
but don’t give up.
“Filling up” requires personal boundaries and sometimes this can be
the biggest challenge. In this age of text messages and Facebook, we
are essentially “on call” and reachable 24/7. Many people enjoy that
connectivity, but it leaves us with no time to rejuvenate ourselves. It’s
necessary to set boundaries for yourself: check emails only at 9am,
noon and 6pm, put the cell phone and tablet away after 8pm, and have
technology free weekends on occasion to give yourself a break.
Setting those personal boundaries will likely require saying, “NO”
at times- to friends, family, or coworkers. Saying NO is not a natural
skill for those that value helping others. However, it is a vital one to
learn and then continually practice to sustain ourselves.
Compassion fatigue is a problem, but the only ones affected by it
are those who are compassionate to begin with. Remember that and
be kind to yourself. We find ourselves in caregiving roles because we
enjoy helping others and we want to make a difference, but we must
recognize that our ability to help others is limited by our ability to care
for ourselves. If you do not have compassion for yourself, you cannot
truly give it to others.
Accept the reality that you cannot save everyone. Do not
underestimate the importance of saving one life. You are a hero. Honor
yourself and be proud of the difference you have made!
If you need additional support, be sure to reach out to your doctor
to find the resources you need. Not sure if you need help?

Cover Story
Red Dog Farm Animal
Rescue Network
Looking Back, Looking Ahead
by Garland Graham
W
here has the time gone?!
Ten years ago I saw a need in our community. There were a number
of great animal rescue organizations, several of which I was involved
with at the time, but there was a segment of the animal population
that was being left behind – farm animals. Too often I saw situations
where families in crisis had dogs, cats, an old horse, and a few goats
or pot-bellied pigs. There were rescue groups who could help with the
dogs and the cats (though as we all know, there can never be enough
rescue groups for dogs and cats), but there was often no solution
available for the farm animals.
Living in Summerfield, I knew a lot of animal lovers with empty
pastures or an extra stall, so I started trying to connect people willing
to take animals in with people willing to pay for their veterinary
care. What started out as a very small group of friends and neighbors
who met at the local coffee shop once a month has grown in to a
county-wide network of foster homes and donors. They’re all working

together to offer assistance to as many domesticated animals in need
in our community as possible, regardless of the species. Over the
years we have added volunteers with expertise in exotic animals as
well, resulting in us now having everything from horses and goats to
dogs, cats, parrots, chinchillas and even snakes in our foster homes at
any given time.
Ten years later, we have taken in nearly 2,500 animals – almost one
per business day. Of course the flow of incoming animals is not that
consistent (that would be too easy!). It is generally more like 17 goats
from an animal control bust one day, then a few
quiet days, then a litter of kittens to be bottle fed,
a starving horse, a few more quiet days and then
a (seemingly straightforward) Labrador Retriever
who tests positive for heartworms. Nothing
about animal rescue work is consistent, easy or
straightforward. It is a weekly roller coaster with
some pretty low lows but even higher highs. We
have all had our Saturdays on which we’d honestly
rather be sitting at the pool, but the feeling of
purpose that we get when we are able to offer an
animal an exponentially better life than they’ve
ever had before keeps us answering the calls and
heading out to do all we can to help.
Our organization has grown exponentially in
ten years. In the early years, Gary and I fostered
Johnny
July 2016 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails or text TRITAILS to 64842
the vast majority of the animals on our farm and kept all of the crates,
food, supplies, etc. in our barn. Our dining room table was covered
with open applications, to-do lists and checklists. In 2008, we hired
Lauren Riehle as a part-time Executive Director and opened the office
at Bur-Mil Park. In 2009 we were able to bring Lauren on full-time
thanks to a grant from the Weaver Foundation. With an office and a
full-time Executive Director, the organization really began to grow
and the foster network doubled, then tripled in capacity. When we
started the organization, my goal was to be able to foster ten animals
at a time. At any given time now, we may have up to 100 animals in
our foster network, spread out in the homes of volunteers all across
Guilford County and beyond. Also, we now have an energetic Board of
Directors injecting lots of new ideas into the organization.
We have been fortunate enough to develop relationships and
partnerships with some amazing organizations. We have a very close
relationship with Guilford County Animal Control as well as other
animal control agencies across the state. We have been the beneficiary
of a veterinary relief fund from ma Cares that allows us to bring
in animals with medical conditions that are expensive to treat. We
have a wonderful relationship with Rescue Ranch in Statesville, and
many of our alumni animals have been lucky enough to move there
permanently to be used in their top-notch education program. Two of
our alumni goats and several alumni rabbits live at the Greensboro
Science Center, and Camp Weaver uses our adoptable animals in their
summer camp sessions to teach children about farm animals. All Pets
Considered fosters cats in their store for us on an ongoing basis, and
Leatherwood Kennels trains foster dogs in need of manners before
adoption. We have been the beneficiary of many Eagle Scout and Gold
Award Scout projects, and have had great support from a number of
church and school groups.
Our annual “Dogs on the Catwalk” fundraiser at Triad Stage has
become quite a tradition, and we are so grateful for all of the local
businesses that donate food, beer, wine and silent auction items year
after year to make that event such a success. We do not receive any
public funding, so fundraising is a vital part of keeping our services
available to animals in need. We are also eternally grateful for the
individuals and families who make donations for birthdays, holidays,
to memorialize a pet, or for any other occasion. Nothing warms our
hearts more than when children come to the office to donate the
money they earned at a lemonade stand. Every dollar helps!
We’re very proud of what we have been able to achieve in the last
ten years and are now focusing our efforts forward to the next ten
years. With the ongoing support of our community, we hope to be
able to carry the momentum forward and expand our foster network
significantly. We are also considering whether initiating a capital
campaign to purchase a true “quarantine barn” makes sense. Having a
quarantine barn would allow us to bring all of our farm animals to one
centralized location for veterinary care and training before being placed
in foster homes. We could utilize volunteers to help with daily feeding
and animal care, and could use that facility for adoption fairs, castration
clinics and educational programs. The possibilities are endless.
To celebrate our 10th anniversary, we are going back to our roots –
to a barn in Summerfield! Well, not just any barn. We have reserved
Summerfield Farms for the evening of Saturday, August 20th for what
is sure to be the biggest celebration of animals of all sizes in recent
history! There will be great food and drink, a fabulous country band,
a mechanical bull, animal art, a silent auction and a whole host of
adoptable animals of all shapes and sizes. Please pull on your boots and
join us to learn more about Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network,
meet some of our adoptable animals and celebrate all that we have been
able to do for the animals of our community in the last ten years.

Some Facts About Pot-bellied Pigs
It is heartbreaking for a rescue to turn away an animal who needs help. Unfortunately, Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network is forced to
do that regularly with pot-bellied pigs. There are simply more pigs in need in this area than we can take into our program.
Pot-bellied pigs make wonderful pets. But, many people acquire pot-bellied pigs as piglets, when they are SO cute, and then do not want to
take care of them (or do not have an appropriate enclosure for them) when they grow to their mature size. It is a myth that pot-bellied pigs
stay small! A healthy adult pot-bellied pig generally weighs between 75 – 200 pounds. Many breeders try and convince people to underfeed
their pigs to keep them small, which is just as cruel as underfeeding a dog or a cat.
Pigs are very social animals and are happiest in a home where there is at least one other pig. While I do know of some people who choose
to keep their pigs indoors, I truly believe that pigs are farm animals and are happiest outside so long as they have shelter from extreme
weather and a wallowing hole or baby pool in summer. Pigs are incredibly strong and smart, so pig owners must have very good fencing for
them or they will escape and find adventure, which often ends with a pig being caught by animal control. While there are always exceptions to One of Red Dog Farm’s
youngest volunteers.
the rule, pigs and dogs generally don’t mix.
If you are interested in adopting a pot-bellied pig (or better yet, a pair of them), please consider all of their long term needs before making your decision, and please adopt!
Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network has a number of adoptable pigs. Please visit www.reddogfarm.com for details.

Vet’s Corner
John Wehe, DVM
Downtown Greensboro
Animal Hospital
Dr. John Wehe is a Greensboro
native. He is the owner and
veterinarian of Downtown
Greensboro Animal Hospital,
a new animal hospital in
downtown Greensboro that
opened in March 2013.
Dr. Wehe attended North
Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine and
received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2007. His
professional interests include small animal medicine, surgery and
ultrasonography. He values serving his patients and educating
his clients, as well as getting to spend time downtown. Dr.Wehe
shares his life with his amazing wife and four children.
FERRET ADRENAL GLAND DISEASE
Ferret adrenal gland disease (AGD) is one of the most common
diseases that veterinarians diagnose in ferrets. The adrenal gland is a
small hormone secreting organ in the abdomen. There is a right and
left adrenal gland located in the abdomen next to the kidneys. They
are responsible for secreting steroids and sex steroid hormones. Ferret
adrenal gland disease is a condition of an overactive adrenal gland
most commonly related to a benign tumor. The age of onset ranges
from two to seven years, but most ferrets are typically diagnosed
around three or four years of age. Symptoms that owners usually
notice are hair loss, itchiness, lethargy, and an enlarged vulva in the
case of female ferrets. The hair loss can become quite dramatic over
time. More serious clinical signs include difficulty urinating in male
ferrets and weakness caused by a low red blood cell count (anemia).
AGD is very common in pet ferrets from North America. Researchers
have proposed three main reasons for this, however, conclusive
evidence is still lacking. The three main theories for the development
of AGD in pet ferrets are related to early sterilization (neutering/
spaying), increased “daylight” exposure and genetics.
In order to understand the how sterilization plays a role in the AGD,
you must first understand a little about the sex hormones estrogen
and testosterone. In the sexually mature ferret these hormones are
produced by the gonads (ovaries and testicles). These sex hormones
contribute to the signaling of the pituitary gland in the brain. The
pituitary gland is like a conductor of an orchestra. It releases chemical
signals called gonadotropins that drive the release of steroid and sex
steroid hormones from the adrenal gland. One of the gonadotropins
of particular interest is luteinizing hormone (LH). In order to prevent
an imbalance in hormone secretion from any organ, there is a series
of negative feedback loops. Researchers believe that early sterilization
removes the negative feedback loop between pituitary gland and
adrenal gland by removing the sex hormones. Loss of this negative
feedback loop causes the pituitary gland to overstimulate the adrenal
glands by LH. The chronic overstimulation of the adrenal gland by
LH causes the adrenal glands to abnormally increase in size and
potentially develop tumors, and release excessive amounts of sex
steroid hormones leading to the clinical signs associated with AGD.
Excessive “daylight” exposure is another proposed method of
development of AGD in ferrets. When spring arrives and the daylight
hours increase, sexually mature ferrets prepare for the breeding
season. It is during this time that the complicated hormone cycling
and feedback loops get exercised and the pituitary gland pumps out
gonadotropins to prepare for reproduction. This system becomes
inactive when the daylight hours decrease in the fall and winter after
the breeding season is over. Indoor pet ferrets are generally exposed to
longer daylight hours through indoor lighting. Therefore, they never
go through the natural cycle of increasing and decreasing daylight
hours. This prolonged “daylight” exposure causes excessive release of
gonadotropins which overstimulates the adrenal gland, leading to AGD.
There are also theories that genetics contribute to the development
of AGD. The majority of pet ferrets in North America come from only
a few breeders. There are concerns that over breeding of ferrets with
limited genetic diversity from these suppliers has caused a predisposal
to development of AGD.
As veterinarians, we play a role in educating our clientele. All
ferret owners or potential ferret owners should be aware of AGD and
the clinical signs and behavior changes that may occur with AGD.
Diagnosis of the disease is also crucial. While the clinical signs are
widely recognized by most ferret owners and veterinarians, diagnostics
are important to confirm the suspicion of AGD and rule out other
diseases that may be present at the same time. AGD is diagnosed with
blood work to assess for overall health of the abdominal organs such as
the liver and kidneys, and measure the blood glucose. A blood sample
is also typically used to assess for elevated sex hormones in the blood.
An abdominal ultrasound is used to visualize the adrenal glands to
assess their size, as well as look for abnormalities such as an adrenal
gland tumor. Ultrasound also helps to determine if just one or both of
the adrenal glands are diseased.
Currently, the only curative treatment for ferret adrenal gland
disease is surgical removal of the affected adrenal gland. The
short term and long term prognosis for an otherwise healthy ferret
undergoing this surgery is excellent. As mentioned before, this disease
can be bilateral or become bilateral, for this reason some veterinarians
recommend surgically addressing both adrenal glands at the same time.
There are also nonsurgical treatment options for the treatment of
AGD. It is important to note that these treatments are not curative, but
can effectively alleviate the clinical signs of AGD. However, they will
not stop the growth of an adrenal gland tumor. Two popular medical
therapies available involve gonadotropin analogs that block the action
of LH on the adrenal gland. These include leuprolide and deslorelin.
Both are available in long acting injections. A third medical treatment
is melatonin, which is also available as a long acting implant.
Knowing the clinical signs of AGD in your ferret and taking them
to see your veterinarian if you are concerned is important to diagnose
AGD and other concurrent diseases, and also to decide on which
therapy, if any, is right for your ferret.

Training Your Pet
Dog Crates: Your Pup’s Safe Haven
Take the time to teach your dog to love a crate, not stress over it!
by James Voyatzis
Managing your dog seems like a full time job. There are many
things that your dog can get into that will cause harm or that he
can destroy. One of the biggest mistakes that dog owners make
is that they give too much freedom to their dog, too soon. It is
highly recommended that you crate train your dog. It is the best
way to potty train your pup, and it will keep them safe from their
own mischievous behavior. Crate training relies on a dog’s natural
instinct as a den animal. When introduced properly, a crate
becomes a dog’s cozy den where he can eat, sleep, play, and
hide in peace.
Creating a Safe Haven
Even though dogs are naturally den animals, you must
condition them to enjoy the crate. If not done correctly, a dog can
feel trapped and become extremely anxious. Once a dog develops
crate anxiety, crate training can be a nightmare. Crate training
must be done slowly, and systematically. The goal is to have the
dog see the crate as a source of positive things (food, toys, praise,
etc). Using the crate as a punishment will set your crate training
back. If your dog barks or whines when you put him inside the
crate, ignore him. The biggest mistake in crate training is to let
the dog out while he is barking, and whining. This teaches the dog
that barking and whining will get him out of there. Don’t give in!
The first few days of crate training can be tough, but it will pay off
in the long run.
Keep Calm, and Stay in a Crate
Crates offer many benefits for your dog, besides potty training.
Summer time provides several stressors for dogs that a crate
can help make the
dog feel at ease.
Summer is the season
for thunderstorms.
The dog can retire
to his crate to hide
from the stress
that thunderstorms
bring. The 4th of
July is notorious for
stressing dogs out so
18
much, they flee from their yards to get away from the loud noise.
Allowing the dog to stay in the crate during these stressful times
will help keep your dog calm and safe.
Summer vacations can be a great adventure for your dog.
Traveling with your canine is much easier, and safer with a crate.
Airline travel requires a dog to be in a plastic crate. It is very
important to introduce the dog to the crate well in advance of the
trip. Assuming the dog is comfortable in the crate, and not taking
time to get your dog comfortable with the crate can cause a great
deal of stress for him. Having your dog crated in the car is the
safest way to travel, both for you and your dog. You will be far
less distracted with your dog in a crate. Also, in the event of an
accident, the crate provides some protection for your dog. Many
hotels are now considered dog-friendly. However, they do require
the dog to stay in a crate when they are unattended. If your dog
is not crate trained before the trip, their barking and whining will
surely disturb others in the hotel.

Felix
River
is a 3 year-old Pit Bull/Mastiff mix.
He’s a big dog, with a big heart, and loves to
please his people. Felix is content to lay at your
feet or snuggle on the couch. He is housetrained, but may have an accident or two while
adjusting to his new environment. Felix is a
quick learner though! Felix does great on a leash
and likes to run, so a fenced in backyard would
be great! He is a very strong boy and sometimes
forgets how big he is; he can get a little hyper and accidentally bump
into things—so a home without small children is best. He does well
with most other dogs after a proper, slow introduction. He’s lived with
a cat, but can be a bit curious and excited around them because he
wants to play. Felix just wants a loving home.
is a handsome
domestic medium hair who
loves to socialize and play. He
can be shy at first but once he
warms up, he loves to cuddle.
His favorite activities include
eating, playing hide and seek
and cuddling for hours at a
time. He would do best in a
home with an older/low energy
dog or cat to hang out with (he
wouldn’t do well with playful
pups or aggressive cats). This boy is simply stunning and is waiting
for his new forever family!

Purrl. Would you like a playmate for your
young pup but can’t quite bring yourself to
adopt a second canine? Purrl is up for adoption
and absolutely LOVES her play time with the
dogs. She thinks she is a dog sometimes but
we won’t tell her otherwise! If a second dog is
just too much for you, we’ve got the purrrrfect
playmate for you. Purrl is FIV positive (Feline
Immunodeficiency Virus) so she cannot be with
other cats. The Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is a slow virus that
affects a cat’s immune system over a period of years. FIV is a catonly disease that cannot be spread to humans or other animals. FIV
cats most often live long, healthy and relatively normal lives with no
symptoms at all. Purrl is a healthy girl otherwise.

Ike
is 9 years old and a very
happy dog who loves to romp
and play with toys. At the shelter,
he was an owner surrender.
Emaciated and subdued when
he came into rescue, he has
since put on weight and is now
galloping around with a toy in
his mouth. Ike likes the other
dogs in his foster home but does
Chihuahua Rescue
not play with them. He loves to
snuggle under a blanket in a dog bed or on his foster Mom’s lap. When
strangers visit he is stand-offish at first, but he does warm up to them.
Ike stays in an Ex-Pen during the day and holds his business while
his foster mom works. He sleeps in his dog bed at night but would
probably love to sleep in the bed with his “forever” human when he
finds him or her. Ike is a delightful dog that has a lot to give. He is a
joy to have around and is neutered, crate-trained and UTD on shots.

loving, and takes every opportunity
to give wet kisses to any face within
reach. She would love to have a fenced back yard and an active

Meet Roo,
a
beautiful, 3 year old kitty with
the most amazing black and
white fur pattern and green
eyes you have ever seen. What
a beauty! She was brought to
the SPCA of the Triad only
weeks after giving birth to
three adorable kittens. Now
her kittens are on their own
and Roo is ready to find her
very own spot in someone’s
heart. Roo is small, sweet and
curious and ready to put you under her spell. Somehow, we don’t
think that will be hard to do.
Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n
Indiana
is an
adorable, gray and white
Tabby with a beautiful
coat. He has fluffy white
hair on most of his body
with a gray tabby coat
on top, almost like he is
wearing a jacket. He was
only a few weeks old when
he came to the SPCA
of the Triad after being
dropped off at the home of one of our volunteers. Considering he is
just a kitten, Indiana is very laid back and mature. Perhaps he is a
wise old soul that is just looking for his soul mate. Why not come out
and see if the two of you make a connection?

Bailey came up
to his foster mom while
she was at work one
evening … well, she
picked him up and took
him home. He is a
handsome buff colored
kitty that tips the scale

cats we have ever met

up-to-date on vaccines, neutered, and Felv/FIV negative.

Pearl is a very sweet
8 pound Chihuahua. She
gets along nicely with
other dogs and would love
to have a small doggie
companion who could be
her “hearing dog” because
she is deaf. Pearl loves to
snuggle and her favorite
thing is to sleep in the bed
with her foster parents.
Hart-2-Heart Rescue
She likes to sleep up
against her person. If you are interested in Pearl, please research the
rewards of sharing your life with a deaf dog. Pearl is smart, attentive
and eager to communicate. For her safety, we are looking for a home
with a securely fenced yard. Pearl is around 4 years of age and has
a heart murmur but does not require medication at this point. She is
spayed, current on all shots, heartworm negative and on heartworm
prevention. Pearl is best suited for an all adult home.

original owner had given
them to a 16-year-old boy,

So she took them to the

Rescue angels spied them
Doberman Rescue of the Triad
and delivered them to us.
Both have that regal Dober bearing, and there’s not much better than
seeing a pair of Dobers together. They share the common deep-seated
Dober craving for human attention, and they totally love to be petted
and fawned over. Here’s what our volunteers have to say about them:
“Reine is a sweet, energetic little girl who loves to give kisses and will
do whatever you want.” Wrex is a very laid back loverboy. He rides
well in the car and loves to get attention. He listens well and is very
easygoing. He is handsome and regal - a real gentleman.” Keep in
mind that these two have been together for years and must be adopted
as a pair.

a 4-year-old
domestic
medium hair,
first came to
RCAS she
was a scared
mama cat with
four precious
kittens to take care of. Once her kittens were weaned, Tripod was
spayed and since then her personality has blossomed. Affectionate
and lovable are two words that perfectly describe Tripod.
Her adoption fee is $15 and she is ready to go home the day of her
adoption. Meet her at RCAS today! n

Polo. Are you looking
for a sweet cuddlebug
to share your couch? A
dog who adores people
and vice versa? Look
no further! Polo is your
guy! Polo is looking for
a special home that can
continue working on
boundaries with him,
but also give him lots of
cuddle time. His manners
Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue
have improved greatly
since coming to BRBR but because of his energy level, he would do
best in a home without small children. Polo also needs a home without
smaller dogs. This precious boy just wants a chance to show you how
much love he has to give!

Duncan,
(#160418) is a 57 lb.,
5 year old Golden
mix. While fearful of
new people and new
situations at first, he
quickly warms up to
people and is very
sweet and loving.
Duncan gets along
well with other dogs
and is in need of
Triad Golden Retriever Rescue
some time, love and
attention from his new family. He will reward you by climbing onto your
lap for a good snuggle! Duncan is a great listener and a quick learner.
We think he has more Golden in him than anything else because he has
a beautiful, flowing coat and a personality that shows he wants to please.
Duncan would love a great big fenced yard where he could run and play!

Phillis was picked
up as a stray in Duplin
County. We suspect she
was used for breeding
based upon her appearance when we freed her
from the shelter. Phillis
knows sit, down, and
come, is crate-trained,
good with dogs but not
cats, and LOVES people
and toys. She is eager to
please and responds well
to correction.
Foster goes with the flow
and loves everyone he meets. If
you are looking for a dog that
can keep up with you, then Foster
is your man! He enjoys time at
the beach, hiking (he hiked the
Stone Mountain trail with his
foster family), retrieving tennis
balls and romping in the yard
with the rest of the pack. He is a

Myths and Facts:
Spaying & Neutering
By Laura Michel
A
sk any animal shelter worker
and they will tell you that with
the arrival of spring comes an
increase in unwanted puppies
and kittens. Also known as
“puppy and kitty season,” it is the time of year
when shelters experience a larger influx of
animals as compared to other times of the year.
Sadly, many end up being euthanized due to a
lack of space.
We may sound like a broken record, but spaying and
neutering really is the most effective means of controlling the
pet overpopulation problem. As we have learned, you cannot
adopt your way out of this problem. Ultimately, it is every pet
owner’s responsibility to do their part to help limit unwanted
litters. Doing so helps the entire community. Yet, so many pet
owners use common and unfounded excuses to not get their pets
fixed. Most of these excuses are based on myths that need to be
eliminated once and for all. So let’s dispel these myths with the
facts:
Myth:
A female dog or cat should be allowed to have
one litter before being spayed.
Fact: Medical evidence shows just the opposite. In
fact, the sooner you spay your female, the better for her health.
Spaying before the first heat cycle, around 6 months of age, will
eliminate uterine and ovarian disease, and greatly reduce the
incidence of breast cancer. Females that are spayed early tend
to be healthier and to live longer. Additionally, heat cycles last a
week or longer and can cause females to cry incessantly, exhibit
nervous behavior, make them quite uncomfortable and attract
unwanted males. Dogs can have two cycles a year and cats can
have three or more.
Myth: I don’t want to emasculate my male.
Fact: Male dogs and cats do not have a concept of
masculinity, identity or ego. Neutering your male will not change
his personality. In fact, it will give you a healthier and happier
companion by preventing diseases such as testicular cancer and
prostate disease. Problems with aggression, marking territory
46
(spraying strong-smelling urine on surfaces inside and outside the
home), roaming (getting out to look for a mate) and fighting can
be avoided or eliminated entirely by neutering at an early age.
Myth: Spaying or neutering will make my dog
less protective.
Fact: Removing a dog’s reproductive organs will have
no effect on its natural protective instinct. A dog’s personality
and instinct are formed primarily by its environment and genetic
makeup rather than its sex hormones.
Myth:
Spaying or neutering my pet will make it
become fat and lazy.
Fact: Absolutely false! Overfeeding and a lack of
exercise are what will make your pet fat and lazy.
Myth:
I want my children to witness the miracle
of birth.
Fact: It is unlikely your children would be there at
the time of birth. There are oodles of books, videos and other
resources that teach about birth. It is a better choice to teach your
children about why it is important to spay or neuter pets and about
being a responsible pet owner.
Myth: I can’t afford this surgery.
Fact: The cost to spay or neuter a pet can vary depending
on size, sex, type of animal, etc. Regardless of the actual cost,
July 2016 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails or text TRITAILS to 64842
continued on next page
it is a one-time fee that will eliminate potentially larger expenses
associated with having litters, treating expensive illnesses, damage
to your home and furnishings from marking, etc. In addition to
many veterinary hospitals in the Triad, there are several low-cost
clinics. Just google “low cost spay neuter” along with your county
and you are sure to find some information.
Myth: I will find good homes for the puppies or kittens.
Fact: Yes, you may very well find homes for the entire
litter. But for each one you find, that will be one less home for a
shelter animal.
Myth:
I would rather purchase a purebred from a
breeder. It will be healthier than a shelter pet.
Fact: Spending $250 to $1,500 or more is no guarantee
you will get a better or healthier pet. Many purebred pets come
into animal shelters every day. While no shelter can guarantee the
health of their pets any more than a breeder can, most shelters do
health and behavior screenings before putting pets up for adoption.
And when you adopt a shelter pet, purebred or mixed breed, you
are getting a wonderful companion and you are doing your part to
help reduce pet overpopulation!
If these facts don’t convince you, consider these numbers from
the Humane Society of the United States. One unspayed female
cat and all her unaltered offspring can produce over 420,000
kittens in seven years. One unspayed female dog and her unaltered
offspring can produce 67,000 in a six-year period. These animals
are quite prolific!
One final consideration is the impact pet overpopulation has
on the community. With overpopulation comes an increase in
the demand for animal control services as well as an increase in
the resources and expenses associated with operating a shelter.
In most communities, these expenses are funded with your tax
dollars. Lastly, there is an increase in rabies exposure and disease
that can affect people and animals.
Please be a responsible pet owner. If your dog or cat has not
been spayed or neutered, contact your veterinarian or a local low
cost spay and neuter clinic.

DID YOU KNOW?
Hundreds of pets die each year from heat exhaustion due
to being left in a parked car. In just minutes, your vehicle
can reach a temperature that may put your pet at risk of
heatstroke or even death, even on a day that does not seem
that hot to you. And a cracked window makes little or no
difference. Don’t let your pet become a statistic.

Meet Daphne &
Colby. Hi there, I’m
Daphne! Believe it or not,
am also known as BP
Ruupfora Rodeo. Where
do these breeders get those
names? Say it like this:
“R U up for a rodeo?” My
folks called me Daphne
which fits me very well.
Unfortunately, they
couldn’t keep me or my
brother Colby anymore,
so we are looking for a
new home. All we want
is a nice place to run a
little and sleep a lot. My
coat is a dark blue, with
gray sprinkled liberally
now that I am getting on
in years. I still have more
energy than my 10 yearold brindle brother. Colby
and I sure would like to
stay together.
