July 5th. $ 8,610.00 We appreciate the generosity of you, our parishioners. When we have a second collection, people tend to split their usual offering between the two collections, which is understandable given the pressure of our economic times. However we rely on the first collection to keep the parish going and pay the bills. We ask that if there are two collections you include the usual amount you give in the first collection and do the best with the second if you are able to. MIZZI-GILI 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 12, 2015 Greetings to All! O God, who show the light of your truth to those who go astray, so that they may return to the right path, give all who for the faith they profess are accounted Christians the grace to reject whatever is contrary to the name of Christ and to strive after all that does it honor. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. This is the Collect (opening prayer), one of the three presidential prayers that the priest prays to God the Father as he is offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The collect is asking the Almighty Father for the strength to overcome that which would take us away from His Son and to bear honor to His holy name. In this prayer, the priest is saying that those who call themselves Christians are to live like Christ, or to be like Christ, sacrificing themselves for the other. Also, it is to hold onto the teachings of the Church, even in the face of opposition, indifference and even when we don’t agree with His teachings. If we take a good look at the gospel, we would see that by the disciples going out two by two, our Lord gives them instructions in aiding those who don’t know our Lord the grace to get to know Him. It is not just the social teachings that we get to know God but by listening to the scriptures, especially the Gospels and listening to them correctly, in other words, not what we want to hear. How do we bear the name of Christ honor? We give glory and honor to His holy name by the way we walk in the footsteps of Christ. The collect prayer is very telling because in it, the priest is asking God to give us the ability, like the twelve- the Apostles, to remain faithful to Him even when people do not accept the teachings of Christ or the Church. We must realize that when we reject the teachings of the Church, we reject Christ. That is what it is meant in that opening prayer- give all who for the faith they profess are accounted Christians the grace to reject whatever is contrary to the name of Christ and to strive after all that does it honor. Our Lord knows that we can do it. We only need to let Him into our souls. May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our hearts, that we may know what is the hope that belongs to our call. Buona Domenica! Good Sunday! I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt thanks to all those who assisted me this past year. As I mentioned last weekend, Fr. Matthew Fernan, who is the pastor of St. Matthew in Hastings, will be coming to St. Eugene as Pastor as of August 1, 2015. With Cardinal Dolan’s parish planning initiative Making All Things New, there are more priests than parishes to go around, thus needing to place more pastors. Please welcome Fr. Fernan as you welcomed me. This is a difficult time for our parish with transitions. Our parish saw Fr. Villa be transferred, who was here for 23 years, 16 as pastor, Fr. Morrow who is on sick leave, the school with many of the teachers retiring and now me. With all of the moves, we need to stay strong and stay together. We need to pray and not lose hope. Be assured of my prayers for all of you. Please pray for me. God Bless you and God Bless the Parish of Saint Eugene! .
