July 24th, 2016 The Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Mass Cards St. Matthew’s Parish offers two types of Mass Cards: Announced Masses: As the name implies this is a Mass set for a specific date and time and the name of the person(s) for whom the Mass is offered is published in the bulletin and announced at the Mass. These are particularly suitable for those families or individuals who will attend the actual Mass on the day appointed. While anyone can arrange for an Announced Mass their number is necessarily limited by the number of public Masses offered in a year. Unannounced Masses: These are Masses that will be offered in the coming year but at an unspecified date, time and place. The priests of the Parish offer these Masses during retreat, vacation, and other days in which they do not have a public Mass. Mass Cards are issued for these Masses with the name of the person(s) written in the card but without any specific promised date or time. This category might be suitable for cases where the family of the named person are not parishioners, live some distance away, or would not otherwise be able to attend a Mass here on a set day or time. The receptionist will help you in arranging either or both of these Masses and the different offerings for each category. Summertime Giving with Faith Direct As you are probably aware, church attendance during the summer months tends to drop off as vacations and weekend sporting events often conflict. On the other hand, the services we provide within the parish and for the larger community continue year round, as do their associated expenses. Thus, your consistent financial support of our parish is vital to achieving our stewardship mission. The easiest way to be sure that your gift of treasure reaches us, even when you can't be here, is through enrollment in our electronic offertory program: Faith Direct. If you have not yet enrolled in Faith Direct, I encourage you to consider doing so this month. Once you have enrolled, you can relax knowing that St. Matthew Catholic Church will receive your gifts throughout the summer. An Enrollment form is included in this bulletin and are available in the church office or you can visit Faith Direct's secure web site at www.faithdirect.net to enroll online. Our parish code is NY386. As always, know that your generosity is truly a gift from God. God Bless You, Fr. All attempts to influence it by temporal punishments or burdens...are a departure from the plan of the Holy Author of our religion." Thomas Jefferson Religious Freedom Legislation - Status: *** U.S. House of Representatives: The First Amendment Defense Act, a bill designed to protect individuals and nonprofit organizations from being discriminated against because of their religious beliefs, will get a hearing before the House on July 12. Among other things, the bill's protections would include religious schools tax-exempt status and prevent federal employees from being fired for holding traditional views on marriage. Former Atlanta Fire Chief, Kevin Cochran, will testify since he was fired after publishing a men's devotional book for his church that included a Christian perspective on marriage and sexuality. (dailysignal.com, 6/29/16) *** Mississippi: A federal judge blocked a Mississippi law, passed by the legislature and signed by the governor, that protects citizens with religious beliefs objecting to same-sex marriage. "If judges (legislating from the bench) can strip American citizens of the free exercise of religion in public, that means faith in general is in peril - ," said Abraham Hamilton, policy analyst.
