Neri Jr. “Nobody is perfect” is a common cliché that we often hear to somehow explain the flaws that is happening around us. But the end does not justify the means, as Rene Descartes once said. If we can do things right the first time, then why not? Same with commitment of errors, mistakes are at times inevitable, but “there is always a room for improvement”. It is a widely known fact that TTSP’s keyword for the year 2012 is Quality, and that the company has initiated drives and activities that has something to do with quality improvement. But before delving any further, the word Quality needs to be defined. What exactly is Quality? Oxford defines the word Quality as a standard of something as measured against other things of a similar kind. Sounds vague and too bookish, but, technically, the word can be defined as an attribute of a product or service that fulfills or exceeds the human expectations. A few Quality gurus shared their insights on the topic. “Fit for use” – JM Juran “Most economical, useful, and always satisfactory to the customer or audience.” – Dr. Kaoru Ishikawa “Continuous Improvement” – W. Edward Deming Even ISO 402 has defined quality to be; “Totality of characteristics of an entity that bears on its ability to satisfy stated and implied needs.” With these statements, one could gain a general idea of what Quality is. Quality plays a vital role in all aspects of business making; it is the determining factor of the success or the failure of a certain plan, procedure, product, or the whole business itself. Also, it is the motivating factor for all institutions to work hard for improvement. As a company which provides design services for customers, quality is indeed a very vital concern for TTSP. As reflected in our Corporate Objectives for 2012, we are pushing hard for better quality for the satisfaction and delight of our clients. The drive for quality is not a new thing. It is already in effect in our sister companies here and overseas. Last year, THI was able to implement their Quality Drive, and now with the efforts of our President Kazuhiro Kitamura and our top Management, TTSP is now ready to continue the campaign for Quality. TTSP is embarking on its own drive for better quality. This is where QCC comes into the picture. So what is QCC? QCC stands for Quality Control Circle, or simply called QC Circle; it is one of the techniques that are employed to achieve Total Quality Management - TQM. Ideally, it is made up of a small group of frontline employees who are dedicated to bringing and creating a dynamic ambience in their workplace. Why QCC? QCC is a powerful tool since it involves employee participation in all levels. As the circle is made up of frontline employees, problem-based approach is better done—determining the problems in the workplace and gather data as to why these problems exist and provide solutions. The QC Circle also provides a platform for employees to utilize their potential and promotes an atmosphere of commitment to excellence. So, in other words, activities conducted by this group is said to have great effect on the self development of each member with which one can develop qualities such as sound personal relations, analytical skills, presentation ability and knowledge in various QC tools. Also, since QCC employs the concept of Plan-Do-Check-Act or better known as PDCA, such activity brings a dynamic and continual improvement. For which an employeeand-customer-oriented company such as TTSP doesn’t stop on looking for better ways of doing the job, and bringing satisfaction to its customers. Who are involved? The QC Circle activity involves the whole company and affects all levels. To ensure company-wide participation, each management group, including the Support group, was required to have at least two teams with 4 to 7 members for each team. A total of 12 teams were formed namely: DNS QCC Team (KP/YP); Cutting Planners QC Team (CP); TeamMATES QC Team (ML); Team Maru (WP); Team Outfitting; Team Piping; Team LS; Hunters; Kouten; Crackerjacks; Diffuser QC Team; and “Will do Free.” To keep the whole activity on the right track, a steering committee was also created with HDD Manager Manuel Lucenio as Chairman. The Vice-Chairmen were ODD Manager Albino Tesaluna Jr. (for Design) and Admin Manager Dale Bontilao (for Support). HPDG Grp.Mgr. Arvin Rivera, EDG Grp.Mgr. Leonardo Legitimas and MP-D SV Noel Lauron made up the members of the steering committee. This committee will also serve as the panel of judges who will deliberate and decide on a winner. How will the QCC activity be implemented? The whole QC activity itself is broken down into smaller step by step activities that all lead up to the awarding of prizes. The official onset of the QCC activity actually began with the formation of the Steering Committee followed by the creation of the Criteria during the early part of March this year. Sufficient time was also allotted to the dissemination of information, formation of teams and the orientation where they were provided with background into the activity as well as the tools and concepts they will be using. The teams will be employing the QC Seven-Step Formula as one of their major tools. According to The QC Problem Solving Approach by Katsuya Hosotani (one of the teams’ reference books), the QC Seven-Step Formula is the basic procedure for solving problems scientifically, rationally, efficiently, and effectively. Time was also given to the teams for the selection of topics. One characteristic of a QC Circle is that they are free to choose the problems to solve. In this instance though, the teams are encouraged to focus more on error reduction and improving design quality. The submitted topics were approved and as of this writing, the QC Circle teams are now in the data preparation stage and will very soon go into Presentation of QC Circle. The longest running activity is the implementation stage wherein cooperation from everyone is highly necessary. It is interspersed with interim reporting activities to update the panel of the teams’ progress. Validation of reports also follows each interim reporting and if all goes well, the conclusion and awarding of prizes will fall in December of this year. The QCC activity is a competition and as such, the steering committee is guided by a certain set of evaluation criteria to determine the winner. Participating Teams will be judged as to Theme Selection, Understanding & Analysis of the Current Situation, Countermeasures, Confirmation of Countermeasures and its Effectiveness, Application of QC Concepts & Methodologies, and Implementation Method. Theme selection is an important part in that it will be the starting point of the teams. Their themes should reflect and be relevant to the management objective. Identifying the true causes of problems will also prove to be challenging for the teams as well as comprehensively analyzing the data they have gathered. Of course, attention will also be paid to how they have adopted the QC concepts and how effectively they have applied it. Teamwork, participation, and how each member played their role will also be a factor in their evaluation. Looking at all these considerations and steps, it is safe to conclude that this is a long-term and complicated activity. As a whole, the panel is looking for the team who provides the most efficient, effective and sustainable solutions to the most common errors or problems encountered during the daily operations of TTSP. Sustainable, because our drive for quality does not end with the year 2012 but instead continues through the coming years in our goal for excellence and continuous improvement. Enriquez Balamban Celebrate World Water Day Harvey F. Cristino DotA fans assembled and exhibited their skills and teamwork as they held a fund-raising tournament, themed “DotA: For-A-Cause”, on the night of April 16, 2012 at the basketball court of Tenshin Dormitory. “Defense of the Ancients” or popularly known as “DotA” is a team-based strategy map developed using the Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft software. As you may have noticed, DotA has captured the hearts of this generation as another option for pleasure and entertainment. DotA players of TTSP led by Philip John Baterna agreed and organized a fund-raising tournament. The money garnered in the tournament was given to our colleague who needs an immediate medical attention. Six teams composed of five players each team put up a show on the game night. Due to time constraints, the tournament reached only the first half of the elimination round. The team of Ramil Navarro dominated the elimination round with a clean record on their losses. Rallying behind are the teams of Michael Colina; Amado Nicolas Jr.; and Jessie Catagcatag. Because of our hectic schedules, the team captains decided not to continue with the tournament instead handed snacks as a celebration with all the DotA players who participated in the tournament. Once again the whole world celebrated World Water Day last March 22, 2012. World Water Day is an international event organized by United Nations Conference of Environmental and Development (UNCED) which started in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As a way of showing that we too care for our mother earth, CIPDI in cooperation with the Local Government Unit of Balamban, Balamban Municipal Employees Association, Balamban Water District, Balamban Multi-Partite Monitoring Team, Tsuneishi Foundation (Cebu) Inc., WCIPA and various locators and stakeholders of West Cebu Industrial Park held a “Tree Growing Activity” last March 24, 2012 at the new sanitary landfill in Brgy. Lamesa, Balamban, Cebu. The event started with a welcome address by Vice Mayor Rosie Binghay followed by a short message from Mayor Ace Binghay. The demo on how to properly plant a tree by Mr. Winmundo Charcos followed shortly. This year, an estimated 5,000 indigenous seedlings were planted. Eager and nature-lover individuals made their way to the planting site upon receiving go signal from the emcee. Fifty -eight TTSP employees showed their love for mother nature with their enthusiasm in planting the seedlings not minding the sweat and dirt. They cheerfully took photos and the vent goes on with much fun in their faces. The event ended with a tummywarming snacks and a feeling of contentment that once again we made a difference for mother earth. The Beacon SET GOALS & BE SET UP FOR SUCCESS Why Set Goals? Anyone who wants to succeed need to set goals. Without goals one tends to lack focus and lose direction. Goal setting enables us to take control of our life's direction; it also provides us with a benchmark for determining whether we are actually heading for success. Dale B. Bontilao Set Attainable Goals Make sure that it's possible to achieve the goals we set. If we set a goal that we have no hope of achieving, we will only demoralize ourselves and erode our self-confidence. However, let us resist the urge to set goals that are too easy. Accomplishing a goal that we didn't have to work hard for can be anticlimactic, and can also make us fear setting future goals that carry a risk of non-achievement. By setting realistic yet challenging goals, we hit the balance we need. These are the types of goals that require us to "stretch ourselves beyond the normal” and these bring the greatest personal satisfaction. Goal setting is used by successful organizations and individuals; top 500 corporations, top level athletes, and achievers in different fields. Setting goals gives us long-term vision and at the same time short-term motivation. It drives us Set Relevant Goals to organize our time and resources so that we can maximize Goals should be relevant to the direction we want our them in our quest to achieve our cherished dreams. life and career to take. By keeping goals aligned with this, we'll But in order to accomplish our goals we need to know develop the focus we need to get ahead and do what we want. how to set them up. Goal setting is a process that starts with Set widely scattered and inconsistent goals and we'll fritter our careful consideration of what one wants to achieve, and the time – and our life – away. willingness to do a lot of hard work to accomplish it. In between Set Time-Bound Goals our goals and our drive to succeed there are some defined Our goals must have a deadline. Again, this means rules that transcend the specifics of each goal. Knowing these that we know when we can celebrate success. When we are rules will allow us to formulate goals that we feel we can working on a deadline, our sense of urgency increases and accomplish from the moment we set them up. achievement will come that much quicker. Rule #1: Set Goals that Motivate Rule #3: Set Goals in Writing When we set goals for ourselves, it is important that The physical act of writing down a goal makes it real they motivate us: this means making sure that they are and tangible. If we need to post it so we have no excuse for important to us, and that there is value in achieving them. If we forgetting it, then it might in our bedroom where it is the first have little interest in the outcome, or they are irrelevant to the thing that meets us as we rise up in the morning and the last “bigger picture”, then the chances of us putting in the work to thing we see as when we get to bed at night. As we write, use make them happen are slim. Motivation is the key to achieving the word "will" instead of "would like to" or "might". For goals. example, "I will reduce my operating expenses by 10% this Set goals that relate to our top priorities in life. year", not "I would like to reduce my operating expenses by Without this type of focus, we can end up with far too many 10% this year." The first goal statement has power and we can goals, leaving us too little time to devote to each one. Goal "see" ourselves reducing expenses, the second lacks passion achievement requires commitment, so to maximize the and gives us an excuse if we get sidetracked. likelihood of success, we need to feel a sense of urgency and Rule #4: Make an Action Plan have an "I must do this" attitude. When we don't have this, we risk putting off what we need to do to make the goal a reality. This step is often missed in the process of goal This in turn leaves us feeling disappointed and frustrated with setting. We get so focused on the outcome that we forget to ourselves, which are de-motivating. And we can end up in a plan all of the steps that are needed along the way. By writing very destructive "I can't do anything or be successful at an- out the individual steps, and then crossing each one off as we ything" frame of mind. complete it, we'll realize that we are making progress towards our ultimate goal. This is especially important if our goal is big Rule #2: Set SMART Goals and demanding or long-term. We have probably heard of "SMART goals" already. Rule #5: Stick With It! But do we always apply the rule? The simple fact is that for goals to be powerful, they should be designed to be SMART. Remember, goal setting is an ongoing activity not just There are many variations of what SMART stands for, but the a means to an end. Build in reminders to keep us on track, and essence is this – goals should be: Specific, Measurable, make regular time-slots available to review our goals. Remember, we need goals to show us the Reference: www.mindtools.com way. Make it as easy as we can to get where we want to go by defining precisely where we want to end up. Set Measurable Goals Include a quantifiable aspect in our goals so we can measure our degree of success. Quantification may be in the form of amounts, percentages, dates, etc. If our goal is simply defined as "To reduce expenses" how will we know when we have been successful? In one month's time if we have a 1% reduction or in two years' time when we have a 10% reduction? Without a way to measure our success we miss out on the celebration that comes with knowing we have actually achieved something. A Tribute to a Colleague On our first sign of life, we fulfill the provident promise of our almighty to this world. Each one of us became the salt that adds flavor to beings that exist in this planet, which sometimes we become too salty for others but often do as perfect in state just as the salt loose its saltiness that dusts in the wind. Humanity as one of our Creator’s precious creation uniquely designs to be intelligibly on top. We have the gift of reason, conscience and feel emotion. As we live day by day, we became aware that man and even other life forms that exist, encounters inevitable episode called death that in its scientific sense the withering state of an organism. That occurrence most often knocks our sanity in an unexpected moment. Often, seeing our love ones, friends and people whom we have known passed this lifetime we vent to question why this happened. Our colleague is no excuse he died recently just before his 24th birthday, a reverent young man with promising future, so untimely that I can still remember how he smiles with his eyes chinks as we talked two days before he died. His family, friends & colleagues must be stunned with the accident and grieving yet one of his family member is admirable that showed a different perspective in embracing death especially to a family member who happens to be his younger brother. He told us during the wake that he and their family have no ills with what happened though they mourn of his brother’s demise, he said “God may have wanted him not to change that he rested and needs him in heaven” that was a very striking statement of acceptance, love and moving on. Not everyone can forego easily of the unfortunate event that happened in each of our lives, guilt, fear, anxiousness and even love often hinders us to admit that he is gone; our love one has joined our Creator. With that, we can discern that man lives to die as if trees that flourish with produce and wither in time, died but seeds hope to new birth and continue. Being as if a maggot yearns to step outside his cosset to become a chrysalis transform to become a butterfly learns to spread its wings, fly, feel the wind, and explore the world thus far our lives is course to finding home. We have witnessed that little young man who hails from Cadiz grew from being an inexperienced schoolboy that face challenges in his lifetime, in his work and personally being away from his family and spent years working with us who were strangers for him at first. Those short years that he has lived we should remember the times we saw him happy around us, his foolishness and those silly times and that above all Grengo consider us his second family and now that he has gone to home. We will miss that little young man from Cadiz City, Negros Occidental and forever he will be in our hearts. From your Ate in TTSP. Summer Escapade: Island Hopping Cory B. With funny underwater poses and drowned laughter, 2012 Holy Week Northern Luzon La Visita Iglesia In commemorating the season of lent, our 2012 Visita Iglesia took about one year planning and four months preparation to visit fifteen churches from Cebu, to the entire Northern Luzon and Manila. Seven audacious friends from TTSP; Niña Canicon, Ace Katherine Lauron, Erneson Abellana, Joseph Stephen Piola, Claire Solomon, Andro Buison and Reynaldo Doronila Jr., four pious friends from Cebu; Jocelyn Bacalso, Lalaine Gabuya, Agnes Abadiano and Dalisay Isidro, two spirited friends from Manila and Bicol; Lemuel Cortes and Don Pesonila, respectively, joined me in this travel. And so the trip went on seeking the fortress in the house of God. April 04 First Church: Sto. Niño de Cebu (Cebu City) On the eve of April 04, 2012, I convened everyone for a meet and greet on the first church at our very own Sto. Niño de Cebu Church. It looked so bizarre when everyone saw the faces of their travel mates. We started the Visita Iglesia with candle lighting and prayers for the safe trip and divine guidance. Transportation. I made our itinerary on a travel-wise basis; taking it on a night trip while sleeping. We booked our flight to Manila via AirPhil Express on 10:40 PM of April 04, 2012. We used a Toyota Commuter, all throughout our trip to Northern Luzon from Manila, owned by Uncle Mario (09089236100). He fetched us at the airport to meet the group and drove the van going to Baguio City. April 05 Second Church: Our Lady of Atonement Cathedral (Baguio City) We arrived in Baguio at 7:00 AM. It was a 6-hour drive from Manila via Kennon Road which was safer and shorter compared to Marcos Highway. Baguio City Cathedral Edwin B. Patiam is made of modern architectural design. Then we took a breakfast at Good Taste Restaurant near Burnham Park. Foods were very cheap and delicious. We met up with Michiko, a friend who graciously sponsored our accommodation in Baguio City. We toured the entire Benguet area. First, we went to Philippine Military Academy where another friend, Capt. Eddie Balunso, a PMA professor gave us an educational tour. Then after the tour, we headed to the rest of the tourist spots: The Mansion, Wright Park, Botanical Garden, Mines View Park, Burnham Park, Strawberry Farm in La Trinidad Benguet and Lourdes Grotto. A welcome dinner was also served by Michiko. April 06 Third Church: St. Mary’s Church (Sagada, Mountain Province) Leaving Baguio at 2 AM together with Mel and Jeff (our two drivers), we reached the beautiful and cold place of Sagada after five hours of travel. Aunt Martina, the wife of Vice-Mayor Yodong of Sagada, prepared our breakfast and welcomed us to her house. Sagada Church, old and made of rocks, suits to its heritage place. We visited the hanging coffins that traditionally enriched by the old folks. The famous Sumaging Cave was never forgotten to be explored. We left Sagada on noontime of the same day. April 06 Fourth Church: All Saints Church (Bontoc, Mountain Province) Bontoc Ifugao is an hour drive from Sagada. On the way, you will see the Bontoc Rice Terraces. We had our lunch at the house of Michiko’s cousin. We visited the All Saints Church of Bontoc which has a pretty contemporary structure. We left Bontoc at 2 PM and drove the beautiful mountains of Ifugao where cliffs are homogeneously made and scary somehow because of its depth. 2012 Holy Week Northern Luzon La Visita Iglesia continuation April 06 Fifth Church: Immaculate Conception Church (Banaue, Ifugao) Banaue, being famous because of the Hagdanhagdan Palayan (Rice Terraces), was travelled from Bontoc for around three hours. What is unique of the church of Banaue is the ancient human wooden sculpture at the entrance. We left Banaue at 5 PM and travelled down the mountain going to the Valley of Cagayan. April 06/April 07 Sixth Church: St. Peter and Paul Cathedral (Tuguegarao City, Cagayan Valley) From Banaue, it took about six hours to arrive at Tuguegarao City. At 11 PM, we dined at a food chain in the city and took our rest at the beautiful accommodation of Ivory Suites and Hotel (078-844-2249). The following day, everyone was prepared again to continue the trip at 7 AM. The St. Peter and St. Paul Cathedral is distinctive and famed for its structure. We went directly to our next destination, Aparri where I planned our breakfast at my brother-in-law’s house. April 07 Seventh Church: St. Philomene Church (Alcala, Cagayan Valley) On the way to Aparri, we dropped by at the old Church of Alcala. The church is marvellously situated along the highway where every traveller will notice the old and stunning church. The caretaker of the church told us to visit also Lal-loc Church the former cathedral of Nueva Segovia, one of the oldest places of the Philippines and was one of the first four major cities in the Philippines. April 07 Eighth Church: St. Dominic Parish Church (Lal-loc, Cagayan Valley) Being ensnared with the suggestion, we headed to Lal-loc and visited the church. Apart from being beautiful in structure, the church was so clean and filled with pleasing fragrance. When Bishop Sibayan, the church’s Parish Priest, heard that we are from Cebu, he invited us for breakfast together with his assistant Parish Priest Fr. Malana. We enjoyed the yellow watermelon and banana. April 07 Ninth Church: Our Lady of the Rosary Church (Aparri, Cagayan Valley) We were three hours behind our scheduled breakfast in Aparri. From Tuguegarao, it would take around two hours travel to Aparri. Kuya Allan, my brother-in-law, was very kind. He prepared the homemade breakfast for us. After which, we headed to Our Lady of the Rosary Aparri Church where there is balcony for churchgoers. April 07 Tenth Church: Shrine of St. Jude Thaddeus Church (Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte) From Aparri, Pagudpud is a five-hour drive. On this route, you are travelling the northern tip of Luzon on its seaside. Patapat viaduct and Blue Lagoon were eyecatching. We arrived at Pagudpud Church around 4 PM where we met Lemuel, who had his flight from Manila to Laoag. On its few hours to sunset, we visited the famous Bangui Windmills. The twenty turbines powered by strong wind are situated along the windy and wavy seashore of Pagudpud. April 07 Eleventh Church: St. William Cathedral (Laoag City, Ilocos Sur) After three hours drive, we had our dinner at Formosa Grill in Laoag City. The Church of Laoag is well-known for its structure and you will be stunned by its attractive interior. The belfry where the face of Virgin Mary is seen was indeed captured by our lenses. The lights to its Capitol Building and parks are dancing to its colour. April 07/April 08 Twelfth Church: St. Paul Cathedral Church (Vigan City, Ilocos Sur) From Laoag, Vigan is just two-hour drive away. We went straight to our accommodation, Villa Angela Heritage House. Gladly, I early booked the room despite of many travellers and famous people staying in this place because of its traditional and aged structure. Everyone took the rest and prepared for another adventure in Vigan. Ms. Cris (the manager, 09193156122) arranged our free breakfast at 6 AM. The requested four calesas also arrived and ready for the tour. It was Easter Sunday, as thanksgiving, we attended a mass at St. Paul Cathedral of Vigan City before our tour started. April 08 Thirteenth Church: St. Augustine Parish Church (Vigan, Ilocos Sur) St. Augustine Parish Church is located within the City of Vigan. It is one of the old churches of the place and famous to its magnificent dark orange and old belfry. From this location, riding on calesa, we headed to Crisologo Museum, Pagburnayan Jar Factory, Baluarte and Hidden Garden where we had our sumptuous lunch. Everyone was excited to unwind as we packed ourselves going to the famous Cabugao Beach Resort, thirty minutes drive from Vigan City. We spent the whole day at the beach and decided to go back to Vigan for our pasalubong and experience the night life shopping at Calle Crisologo, the famous heritage street of Vigan, before we head back to Manila. April 08 Fourteenth Church: Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene (Quiapo, Manila) After ten hours drive from Vigan City, we arrived in Manila at 7:00 AM. We travelled to Quiapo Church, Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene for our morning prayers. April 08 Fifteenth Church: Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church (Baclaran, Manila) After thirty minutes drive from Quaipo, we arrived at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Baclaran Church. We finally had our long breather for we had reached our last Visita Iglesia. We gave thanks, we wished and we prayed for the completion and safety of our travel. We finally made it. The fifteen churches visited, despite of hardship and sleepless nights, are the indication that we structured our friendship and religiously renewed our faith. Together with our prayers, we speak to God that may all our wishes come true and that our very good friend GRENGO, as our companion on this superb and exemplary journey, is on His kingdom having the eternal repose and peaceful journey of his own VISITA IGLESIA. On focus: Hull Outfitting Team The HOT (Hull Outfitting Team) of TTSP is a team of warm, kind, ambitious and friendly people, composed of dynamic members such as Design Engineers, Design Technicians and OJT’s. They are HOT in aligning and attaining with the company’s goals and objectives. They are a team of hardworking and supportive technical individuals. Spearheaded by their vigorous team Supervisor, Engr. Jeodiel O. Romanillos, Hull Outfitting Team is observed to be one of the frivolous teams of TTSP. As described by their team supervisor, each member is very supportive with each other and everyone has his own desire to contribute to the company’s objectives. Each member has his passion to learn and transfer new ideas to those in need and this was delivered without any limitations. Each one shows accountability and responsibility towards his job. Their teamwork enables them to stand the tests that a Hull Outfitting Team could have and made them remarkable to the company. The team name goes with it; they are in-charge of doing the hull’s outfitting work. They are engaged mainly to four functions. First, they are responsible for the loading and unloading of equipments which include the arrangement and fittings of deck cranes, hatch cover, grab bucket, and those other non-mentioned items included in this definition. Second, hull outfitting is the one liable for maneuvering equipments. Third, they are the one accountable of the fittings for equipment and crew’s safety, and lastly, they supply painting schedules. Aside from THI design (of which TSC-Japan is their direct contact), HOT is also catering the hatch cover project for Tsuneishi Engineering - Japan of about 30% job loads. They are supplementing drawings such as preparation of hatch cover production drawings, (NC, parts drawing, piece list, lofting list, working plan, full size, full size piece list) and Nesting jobs. Even if TTSP-HO members are neophytes on this job/project, recently they have inflated more confidence on their submitted outputs and anticipated to receive more additional hatch cover job requests in the future. Hull Outfitting job is not a trouble-free job. But despite the hectic schedule the team member encompasses, they still manage to have fun and never ran-out of adventures. The team enjoys eating. They love to spend their ten-minute break at the pantry whenever a team member has “pasalubong” to offer from a long vacation, and they enjoy the delicious taste of ordered pizza on some occasions. This year, they are incessantly strengthening their camaraderie by company’s supported nomunication outside the office. Aside Cherlyn B. Felisilda from that, there were times that the team would go out to make some diversions after work (with safety) outside the company premises (ie: batchoy-bbq marathon, karaoke marathon, etc,,). Since it is very obvious that when outside activities fall on weekends wherein this is the only time the team supervisor can spend it with his family in the province, his compassionate engineers/ technicians who lives within the area initiates to have team activities on weekend to promote amity by going to eminent beaches and leisure places within Balamban area. They had gone out whale watching, fishing and experienced the excitement only ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) ride could offer. Hull Outfitting Team is now focusing to provide customers good quality drawing with on-time delivery for THI and TSC contracted vessels and with good technical services at THI Yard. Also this year, the team aims for an “A” rating aligning to top management target. For the past 4-months of this year, they have already attained “A” rating and the team will continue to uphold on their achievement. Although they have been intimidated by the previous years of challenging situations, yet they continue to soar and sail across to surmount and decipher these challenges. UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL: Marlon O. Caban “Life is a business.” This is his principle. Marlon Orapa Caban, 41 years old, is the Assistant Group Manager of TTSP’s Hull Construction Design Group. How did he get this far? By “selling” his quality service to the company. This is the only way to survive in the business. “You reap what you sow.” This best describes his stand in life. He strongly believes that by providing the customer with quality products, we can obtain their favor and satisfaction which fuels us in this business. Married to Mrs. Claudia Bautista Caban, he is blessed with two lovely daughters; Pauline Dianne (10 yrs. old) and Marie Fe (4 yrs. old). Sir Marlon, as many would say, is silent yet approachable – perhaps because of his humble upbringing. He was born on May 3, 1971, in Lanao del Norte. He likes country music and his number one sport is volleyball. But during his earlier years at school, he joined track and field. After earning a Bachelor’s degree of Civil Engineering at Misamis University, he went on to Cebu City where he found a job as a construction engineer at a site development. Moving on, he then joined TTSP on September of 1995. If working in a Japanese firm was quite challenging to him, it would be more so in a Japanese ship designing firm. He was assigned at Key Plan and Yard Plan team, where he took every challenge with a positive spirit, enjoying the thrills and learnings that come with this type of job. Ship design is indeed a whole new thing for a civil engineer. Along the way, he also got the chance to be assigned in other work areas such as in Mould Lofting and 3D System. His fifteen dispatches to our mother company in Japan further added and solidified the knowledge that he possessed. His constant motivation and hard work further advanced him to become Hull Construction Design Group’s present Assistant Group Manager, on March of 2012. For over 16 years of dedication, he has learned to embrace and consider this company as his own. He expects more challenges and critical decision making to go with the position that he has right now. He looks to initiate educational workshops and develop each employee’s sense of accountability for his or her own respective tasks. And with that sense of accountability, he envisions the quality of Hull Construction Design Group’s products to improve. On my personal encounter with him, he is a good mentor and always shares what knowledge he has with his subordinates. He teaches and guides us in a way that he let us learn on our own, using our own techniques and approaches. Him being a role model of humility and dedication to me, I have realized, for myself that success is not always about the monetary possessions, but may also be about contentment and confidence that you are giving your best for every given task.
