New Statue of St. Francis
You may have noticed a slight change in the
statues displayed in our “Divine Mercy Chapel”
area. This is because it was pointed out to me there
were two statues of St. Joseph in the church: the
large, prominent one hanging on the right side of
the sanctuary wall, and one that was on display in
the Divine Mercy Chapel. It was also correctly
pointed out to me there really should be only one
image of any given Saint in a church (cf. General
Instruction of the Roman Missal #318). I have therefore accepted the recommendation of the Liturgy
Committee that we allow the large, prominent
statue of St. Joseph in the sanctuary to be the image that is venerated, and that we not draw attention away from it with a duplication. Further, it
was decided by the Liturgy Committee to replace
the smaller St. Joseph statue in the Divine Mercy
Chapel with the image which came in secondplace in the voting when we held our Saintly
Sweepstakes some time ago, which brought us the
statue of St. Michael.
Therefore, I am pleased to announce that we
have a brand-new statue of the beloved St. Francis
of Assisi in the Divine Mercy Chapel. Because of
the size and shape of the statue, and for aesthetic
reasons, we have placed the St. Francis statue on
the side altar and mounted the statue of St. Anthony on the wall niche in that chapel. In addition,
the statue of St. Joseph which had been there has
now found a new home in our newly-renovated
cafeteria in a place of prominence and respect.
This will be a wonderful place for it, as the cafeteria is used for prayer meetings and other parish
gatherings, and there St. Joseph, Patron of the
Universal Church, can continue to watch over the
life of our parish and our many parish activities.
Our Lady of Sorrows Mass
I’m pleased that this week I will again be
celebrating what has become an annual event for
me, the special Mass for Our Lady of Sorrows,
where we pray especially for children and teenagers with special needs and who are terminally ill.
This is always such a beautiful Mass and a profound moment of prayer. More information about
this Mass is elsewhere in the bulletin. Of course,
you do not have to be or be related to a child or
teen-ager with special needs or an illness in order
to attend. I think it would be great if many, many
parishioners came to the Mass to pray along with
these families and to show them, through their
presence, that they continue to be united with and
support them because we are all one parish family.
I invite everyone to consider attending.
I am grateful to Linda Setti who always
does such a wonderful job of organizing all the details for this celebration each year.
Catechetical Sunday Next Sunday
What would September be without Catechetical Sunday? Catechetical Sunday takes place
next Sunday, September 20, and we will highlight
it at the 11:00 Mass with the Blessing and Commissioning of Catechists; all catechists in our Faith
Formation Program have been invited to attend
that Mass.
This year, Catechetical Sunday focuses on
the theme “Safeguarding the Dignity of Every Human Person.” Catechetical Sunday is always such
a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that
each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel.
While in one sense the day is focused on those
who teach and work in our programs of religious
formation, it is also a time for all of us, as a parish
community of faith, to rededicate ourselves to this
crucial ministry which is at the heart of our mission.
It’s appropriate for us at this time to offer
our gratitude and appreciation to our Coordinator
of Faith Formation, April Kleinlaut, and to the
great staff in the Religious Formation office we are
privileged to have serve us: Anna Green, Christine
Graham, and Jessica Becker. As you can imagine,
administrating and running a program serving over
1,300 students is very complex, and our Religious
Formation staff does the job with great skill, care
and devotion, all stemming from their faith in
Christ and their desire to build up the Church. We
look forward to celebrating and being with our catechists next Sunday.
Parish Social Ministry Communion Breakfast
There’s another group of offerers who embark on another ministerial year, and that is our
parish social ministers. They will be marking the
occasion with their second annual Mass of
Thanksgiving and Communion Breakfast on Sunday, September 27, in conjunction with the 9:30
Mass; details about this can be found elsewhere in
this bulletin.
Page 4
September 13, 2015
As you will note, we are thrilled to welcome Mr. Jim Claffey, the Director of Formation
and Programs for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul
of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. I know Jim will
have some great insights to share as he speaks to us
from the perspective of his expertise working for so
many years in programs of caring and service to the
poor and vulnerable among us.
Everyone is invited to this Communion
Breakfast, not only those who work in Parish Social Ministry. I do hope you will consider attending
with your family, as this is yet another opportunity
we have to be together as a parish family and to
reflect on our life together as disciples of Jesus
Christ. Be sure to return the response form so you
can join us after the 9:30 Mass on September 27,
which, appropriately, is the Feast of St. Vincent de
Paul.
Forgiving the Sin of Abortion
You may have recently heard or read in the
media about Pope Francis’ recent announcement
concerning the upcoming Year of Mercy. Pope
Francis has granted to all priests during the upcoming Jubilee Year of Mercy the special faculty to absolve from the sin of abortion any woman who has
had an abortion.
This is a great gesture on the part of the
Pope, but it has to be pointed out that bishops have
always had the faculty to grant to the priests of
their diocese the faculty to absolve this sin, and in
fact, priests in our Diocese of Rockville Centre
have always and consistently been given this faculty by the bishops of this diocese since its creation in
1957. The Pope has taken this step because apparently this is not the case in all dioceses everywhere
in the world, but it is true here. Therefore, I do not
want there to be any confusion: since 1957, any
woman who has undergone an abortion and has
confessed this sin to a priest in the past has already
received the sacrament of divine mercy with full
forgiveness for her sin and with full reconciliation
to God and Christ’s Church.
Allow me to take this opportunity to offer a
heart-felt and impassioned plea to any woman who
is carrying the burden of having had an abortion
and who has not yet come to Confession to receive
absolution for that sin: please, please, please give
yourself the gift of being reconciled and celebrating
God’s merciful love in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I promise you that you will not be judged
and that the priest will welcome you warmly to
share with you the blessings of God’s tender mer-
cy and healing. Be free of the burden and be
healed, and let God’s merciful love bring you to
wholeness! All of us priests are eager to be God’s
instrument of mercy, so please do not hesitate to
come to any one of us.
New Liturgical Ministers
As you can see from our bulletin ads, we are
again recruiting new liturgical ministers ― Readers, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion,
Ushers, and Choir Members (new Altar Servers
will be recruited under different auspices in the
near future).
As I continually point out, these liturgical
ministers are a vital part of our worship; they are
not “extras” or “add-ons.” We definitely WANT
and NEED YOU to be involved if you are not already serving in one of these ministries; you should
think of it as a GIFT you offer to your brothers and
sisters…and who doesn’t like to make others happy
by giving a gift?!? (You will certainly make me happy!) A proper and reverent celebration of our liturgies depends on having sufficient ministers to serve
the needs of the parish, so NOW is the time for you
to step forward. Information about the steps involved to become a minister can be found elsewhere in this bulletin. Thank you for your prayerful
consideration of this call to serve coming from me
and from your parish!
In conclusion…
Together, let’s aim high in Christ. Together,
let’s bring out the best in each other. Together, let’s
be the best we can be in Christ.
And let’s always remember: LOVE IS A
GIFT.
Sincerely,
September 13, 2015

PRAYER AND WORSHIP
Proclaiming God’s Word...
Serving the Body of Christ...
Are you…
Soon the Diocese of Rockville Centre will be sponsoring training and formation days for women and men
interested in being Extraordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion.
EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS
OF HOLY COMMUNION
READERS
Jesus asked twelve men to spread his teachings by
relaying his words to others. From those twelve, hundreds of millions of believers have followed. Today,
in our parish, three dozen men and women bring the
Word of God to the OLPH community by offering
their time to serve as readers at Mass. Because of the
number of daily and Sunday Masses offered at
OLPH, we should have nearly twice that number. I
believe we can find twelve people to enter the ministry of
reader this fall. If you enjoy reading Scripture, and are
at least 15 years old, won’t you consider serving God
by becoming a reader for OLPH? We will provide
training, support materials and spiritual development;
you need to supply your voice. Pray on this invitation.
… One of the twelve?
For more information about becoming a reader, contact Robert Becker at [email protected] or by
calling 631-226-6175. You may also leave your name

WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES
TAKE A SELFIE WITH FLAT FRANCIS
Can you believe Pope Francis’ visit is only a few weeks away...are you excited???
Our Family Life Ministry is inviting everyone in the parish to get ready for Pope Francis’ visit by giving
him a big OLPH welcome! How? By using Flat Francis!
You can download Flat Francis by going to www.olphlindenhurst.org. There are also extra copies on
the pew ledges for you to take.
We want all to take pictures of themselves with Flat Francis. We want to see selfies, family pictures,
group shots, youth meetings, ministry meetings, music camp, Evening Prayer, choirs and service projects. Send those pictures to [email protected].
THEN...NEXT SUNDAY, SEPTMEBER 20TH…
We’ll gather after the 11:00 A.M. Mass for a video montage of all of the pictures and a brief overview of why
Pope Francis’s visit to the Church is so important. Our
parish’s catechists will be blessed at the 11:00 A.M. Mass, so we can
gather with them after Mass too!
So we only have a week left...start downloading and taking pictures and e-mailing them to [email protected].

Telecare Broadcasts for the
Papal Visit to the United States
As Pope Francis visits the United States,
we have a wonderful opportunity to watch this
trip from a unique faith perspective. Telecare, the
television station of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, will bring the Catholic perspective from reporters and anchors who are steeped in the Catholic Tradition. Every aspect of the Pope’s Apostolic Journey to America will be covered live,
from touchdown in Washington D.C., to New
York City, to lift-off from Philadelphia PA. Telecare will rebroadcast all the day’s events each
evening. Each event will also be available via
streaming and on-demand at TelecareTV.org, in
addition to the TelecareTV app.
Telecare is available on Optimum channel
29/137, Time Warner Cable channel 471, Verizon FiOs channel 296, and Charter Communications (check local channel listings).
Memorial Opportunity Available
We have ordered a five-foot San
Damiano Crucifix which will be used
for Taize Prayer Around the Cross
and will adorn the north sacristy
chapel where we celebrate the Children’s Liturgy of the Word. This new
crucifix will also commemorate the
visit of Pope Francis to the United
States later this month.
The San Damiano Cross has a special connection
with St. Francis of Assisi. “Go repair my Church,
which as you see is falling completely in ruin” –
when the image of Christ in the crucifix at San Damiano miraculously spoke these words to St. Francis, he
was awakened to new zeal. He first concentrated on
repairing the church buildings of San Damiano and
nearby churches. But his great “repair” to the Church
was the founding of the Franciscan Order, which began with the followers that Christ began to send to
him shortly after the vision.
If you are interested in memorializing the new crucifix in memory of someone who has died or in honor
of a special occasion or event, please contact Msgr.
Joe at the rectory. The memorial cost is $1,200.
HOLY HOUR FOR PEACE
In response to Bishop Murphy’s call for parishes to
urgently pray for peace because of all the unrest in
the world, please join us for a special Holy Hour devoted to praying for world peace within our own
country and throughout the world. This Holy Hour
for Peace, with prayers focusing on the intention of
peace, will be held on the second, third and fourth
Sunday evenings of the month from 7:00 pm to
8:00 pm. The Holy Hour of Reparation which has
been held on the first Sunday of the month will continue every first Sunday evening as usual, with the
prayers that are usually said for that first Sunday Holy Hour.
Prayer for Peace
Following Bishop Murphy’s request, we are asked to
pray this prayer privately, and we are encouraged to
use this prayer as a part of all meetings and gatherings
held here at OLPH.
Lord Jesus Christ,
who are called the Prince of Peace,
Who are yourself our peace
and our reconciliation,
Who so often said ‘Peace to you’,
Grant us peace!
Make all men and women witnesses of truth, justice
and brotherly love.
Banish from their hearts
whatever might endanger peace.
Enlighten our rulers that they may guarantee and
defend the great gift of peace.
May all peoples of the earth
become as brothers and sisters.
May longed-for peace blossom forth and reign always over us all. AMEN
Mary, Queen of Peace, Pray for us!

ADULT FAITH FORMATION
LITURGY, PRAYER AND SPIRITUALITY
This course will examine the close interrelationship between liturgy, prayer and spirituality. We will explore what we mean by Christian liturgical prayer, and from there we will
discuss how we can have a spirituality that has the liturgy as its center. We will also discuss how and why “full, conscious and active participation” in the liturgy is the core of
Catholic spirituality. Finally, a study of the Liturgy of the Hours will be included. Diocesan Advanced Credit is offered for those who have completed the Basic Theology Course.

 Helped to continue our St.
Bernard League
 Assisted with many Family
Life events.
 Helped our Special Needs
Ministry
 Assisted
Parish Outreach
with various drives and efforts.
 Helped to organize many parish events—up front and behind the scenes…
 Assisted local charities and
organizations...and more!
There is such a great need for service in the life of our
parish and often a huge number of young people who
want to help those in need. This Service Corps is one
way to make this connection.
Here’s how it works:
1. ANY middle school, high school and college aged
students send their contact information to Fr. John at
[email protected].
2. As requests for help come from or come into our
parish, you’ll be contacted to see if you can help.
3. If you can help with a particular project, great! If
not, no problem. You’ll be contacted for the next one!
It really is that easy!!!
This is also a great way to meet high school and middle school service requirements as you are reaching
out to those within our own local and parish community. By serving through the OLPH Youth Service
Corps, you are also connecting and building relationships within our own OLPH community.
SIGN UP TODAY by completing the form below and returning it to Church or e-mailing Fr. John at [email protected]. Projects are always ongoing—so get
involved today!

In today’s Gospel, Jesus says, “If a man wishes to come after
me, he must deny his very self, take up his cross, and follow in my
steps.” The cross of Jesus and the crosses of his members can
evangelize us: the sick, who bear illness with courage; the grieving, who hope against hope; the dying, who clearly trust in the
resurrection; the suffering of our poor brothers and sisters who are
hungry and homeless, but who still trust in God’s love.
Is there a neighbor or friend of yours who is in temporary
need because of a loss of a job or an illness? Please leave a message for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul…we want to help!

The Church’s first truth is the love of Christ. The Church makes herself a servant of this love and mediates it to all people: a love that forgives and expresses
itself in the gift of oneself. Consequently, wherever the Church is present, the
mercy of the Father must be evident. In our parishes, communities, associations and movements, in a word, wherever there are Christians, everyone
should find an oasis of mercy.

servir desinteresadamente a nuestros prójimos.

FROM THE PASTORAL COUNCIL
Hi! My name is St. Francis de Sales, and I’m the patron saint of writers. That’s why your Pastoral Council has picked me as their patron and intercessor in this column which they offer to you.
Here we will grow in our appreciation of the Catholic faith through questions and answers. So, I
encourage all of you to send me your questions about Catholicism. All questions are welcomed and
all will remain just between you and me (we won’t print your name in the bulletin). Please e-mail
[email protected] and each time this column appears, a new question will be answered.
So, let’s get started! I’ll pray for you what I pray for everyone: May the Lord grant you His peace!
“A man is really clean of heart when he is searching for the things of heaven, never failing to keep God before his eyes”
– St. Francis of Assisi.
Question 7: I believe in God; isn’t that enough to get me to heaven?
Ahhh, yes, probably a question we all sometimes ask ourselves. I believe in God, and when I die I’ll go to
heaven…well, that’s one way of looking at it. But maybe there is more to it than that. As adults we teach
our children, but our children can also teach us adults. For example, the title of the books used in the
OLPH Religious Education program is “We Believe.” Let’s dwell on that phrase for a moment.
What is it that we believe in? Let’s take something as simple as your name. You were given a name at
birth and that has had an impact on your life. When people call you by name you acknowledge that person (well, hopefully you do). When you fill out an application, sign up for an event, write your name on
your team jersey, or cash a check (we all love that one!) you’re acknowledging a belief that your name is
your name. Now, say your name is John, and I decide to call you Harry (stay with me and don’t get sidetracked with Jesus calling Simon, Peter). Your first reaction may be, “No, my name is John, not Harry.”
I then ask, “Do you believe your name to be John?” Your response is, “Of course I do!” There is no
doubt in your mind your name is John. You believe your name to be John because that is the truth. No
doubt, no doubt, no doubt! That is the truth.
Well, now let’s ask the question, Do you believe in God? “Of course I do.” But the bigger question may
not be do you believe in God, but how does that belief impact you? Hmmm…I believe in God, but I
don’t believe in making time to celebrate Mass every Sunday. I believe in God, but I don’t believe in saying grace before meals. I believe in God, but I can’t forgive that person. I know Jesus forgave me, but that
doesn’t change my feelings toward that person. I was tempted to do this or that knowing that it was
wrong, but I did it anyway. I believe in God, but I’ll let my feelings guide my actions as opposed to the
truth (in other words, letting my will as opposed to God’s will guide me). I believe in God, but I just
don’t have time to read the Gospels; I’ll get to know Jesus in other ways. That’s o.k.! I believe in God,
and when I die I’ll go to heaven. Just like we don’t say, “I believe my name is _________, but…” do we
say “I believe in God, but…”?
Pope Francis, in The Joy of the Gospel (which I highly recommend you read), reiterated the words of
Benedict XVI when he said, “Being a Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but
the encounter with an event, a person, which gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction”
(Evangellii Gaudium #7).
If our belief in God is as strong as our belief is in our own name, then maybe that truth of believing in
God may have a bigger impact in our life at the present moment, as opposed to waiting until we reach
heaven. “I believe in God, isn’t that enough?” The answer is not in this article, but it’s something we can
all reflect on.

PREPARING FOR
September 20, 2015
25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me;
and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.”
Mark 9:37
Wisdom 2: 12, 17-20
The lives of the righteous and the wicked are not simply defined by their
behavior, but by their hearts, by what they love. The philosophy of the
wicked is based in despair: they know they have forfeited eternal life.
Their only solace is in momentary pleasures which they are driven to attain at all costs, even at the expense of others. They cannot tolerate those
who love God and righteousness because they remind them of everything
they have rejected and lost. The servant of the Lord, “the righteous one,”
will then surely suffer persecution in a world controlled by the wicked.
James 3:16 – 4:3
The Letter of James is concerned almost exclusively with ethical conduct.
It therefore falls within the tradition of Jewish wisdom literature, such as
can be found in the Old Testament. James represents a type of early Christianity that emphasized sound teaching and responsible moral behavior.
Ethical norms are derived not primarily from Christology, as in Paul, but
from a concept of salvation that involves conversion, baptism, forgiveness
of sin, and expectation of judgment.
Mark 9:30-37
The argumentative behavior and pride of the disciples here echoes that of
the scribes as depicted in Mark’s earlier telling of Jesus’ casting out of the
mute and convulsive spirit (9:14-29). Despite the disciples’ closeness to
Jesus, they continued to understand people and events from a human perspective. Jesus’ greatness—and theirs—was not based on miracles they
performed nor on knowledge they possessed, but on the extent to which
they let God take possession of their lives and became the humble servants
of even the lowliest among them.

Gospel Reflection
Questions….
After reading next Sunday’s readings
and Gospel, take some time to pray on
them before you come to Mass. Use the
questions below to aid your reflection.
1. Jesus tells the disciples that in order
to rank first they should be the servants of all. Who would you serve if
you could? Anyone close to you?
Where do you think your parish ranks
in taking care of people in need?
Where would you rank yourself?
2. According to Pope Francis, how
does the person benefit by receiving a
child in Jesus’ name? What does he
say it does for the child or the one received?
“We see how faith brings light and
hope in situations of grave hardship; we observe how faith is rekindled in hearts touched by the Spirit
of Jesus who said, ‘Whoever receives one such child in my name
receives me.’ ”
“Goodness is its own reward and
draws us closer to God, who is the
Supreme Good. It helps us to think
like him, to see our lives in the
light of his plan of love for each
one of us, and enables us to delight
in life’s daily joys, helping us in
difficulties and in trials.”

Taizé Prayer Around the Cross
Thursday, October 1 - 7:3opm in Church
Join us for a candlelight prayer service to help us reflect on the
mystery of the cross and the glory of the resurrection.
Consider setting aside 45 minutes to join in this beautiful and
contemplative form of prayer.
This prayer service is open to everyone, but it will also serve as
part of the Fall meeting for liturgical ministers, so all Readers,
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Ushers and
Altar Servers will be required to attend. A business meeting
presenting information for ministers about the new Mass
schedule, which goes into effect in January, will follow the
prayer service.
