Strong Leadership and Commitment
Message from President Kenith C. Britt
Message from the Board of Trustees
As we’ve done more than 160 times in this community, the school year has ended
and the opportunity for reflection on the year that was begins. The 2010–2011
academic year theme was titled “Enter to Learn—Exit to
Serve,” and I begin this reflection by thanking our pastors,
board members, volunteers, faculty, and staff who continue
to serve our students and families. Without their service
and support, our impact on student academic and faith
formation would be limited. I would also like to thank you
for your prayers and financial support—both of which
allow us to continue to improve this vital mission.
The Catholic Central Board of Trustees would like to thank everyone for your
important contributions that support the existence of Catholic Central School.
In 2010, the Board of Trustees approved a strategic plan focusing on three primary
objectives: enrollment, teaching and learning, and development. I am pleased to
report to you that we have experienced great strides in each of these areas over
the past 12 months. Enrollment—although our goal was to maintain enrollment,
Central’s enrollment grew for the sixth straight year, and the preschool program
continues to be full. Teaching and Learning—high school students are now able
to receive college credit in three mathematics courses before they even receive
their diploma, and many of our students continue to outperform others in the
Springfield region. Development—thanks to the local pastors, the leadership
of the Simonton family, and your support we balanced our annual operating
budget for the ninth straight year and are making progress on a capital drive that
will bring new construction to the school for the first time since 1957.
As we stand on the shoulders of the tireless efforts of the Sisters of Charity and
many diocesan priests who have served Catholic Central in years past, we look
forward to the challenges that are before us. And just as the Sisters and priests
met each challenge along the way, we embrace these challenges so that our
mission of educating the region’s youth in the Catholic faith may prevail. Just
as your parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents have done in the past, I
challenge each of you to continue serving and supporting this great mission so
that future generations of Springfield area youth may carry the torch of Catholic
education that began in the mid 1800s. God bless your families and may He
continue to bless Catholic Central.
Your humble servant,
• Pastors—for your leadership of the Catholic Church!
• Families of our students—for the sacrifices you make to be a part of
Catholic Central!
• Parishioners—for your gracious support of our parish students!
• Alumni and Friends—for your financial support and volunteer time!
• Local and Regional Business Leaders—for your support and services!
• Faculty and Staff—for your commitment to our students!
• Every faithful Contributor in every region across the United States!

Mission Statement
Catholic Central School is a pre-K–12 Archdiocesan
regional school committed to changing people’s
lives by providing a Catholic education foundation
that allows students to succeed. We serve God by
educating students of any family that supports
our values.
We are guided by our values and the ability to

Pillars of Support
Scholarships and Tuition Assistance in 2011
Catholic Central is committed to keeping tuition increases to a minimum. In
fact, our tuition ranks among the lowest of all the schools in the Archdiocese of
Cincinnati. Even so, we realize paying for a private education is a sacrifice.
In the 2010-2011 school year, Catholic Central awarded $499,249 in scholarships
and financial aid to our students. Overall, 481 Catholic Central students (61.5%)
received assistance to supplement tuition costs.
Financial Report
Catholic Central Balances Budget for Ninth Consecutive Year
We would like to thank our parishes for the $423,785 in parish subsidy they
provided our students last year. Their support helps to ensure that Catholic
Central is made affordable to the students of their parishes.

Annual Fund
Thanks to the generosity of so many contributors, Catholic Central’s 2010–2011 Annual
Fund was by far the most successful yet with $247,120 raised during the campaign.
Catholic Central’s Annual Fund supports the school’s annual costs of operation. Key
operating expenses in 2010–2011 included teacher salaries, tuition assistance, professional development and student retreats.
Several facility improvements were able to be made thanks to proceeds from the Annual
Fund, including: repairs to the Junior/Senior High School gym floor and a new kitchen
floor; new public address systems for both elementary campuses; new water lines at the
Limestone campus; boiler repairs; power line additions to expand the Junior/Senior
High computer lab; and a new door and video surveillance at the Lagonda campus.
The summary provided below is a financial overview of the Annual Fund and the
proceeds realized by several key fundraising events.

Catholic Central Regional Alumni Gatherings
Over the last two years, Catholic Central President Kenith Britt and various faculty
and staff members have traveled to cities across the country with high populations
of Catholic Central graduates. The goal of these Regional Alumni Gatherings is to
reconnect with and strengthen ties with alumni who live outside of Springfield, as well
as to share updates about the school. These gatherings have resulted in several evenings
of camaraderie and fellowship, connecting alumni within a community as well as
connecting them back to the school. Thank you to the hundreds of alumni who have
attended these events and we hope to see you the next time we are in your area.
Catholic Central continues to coordinate alumni gatherings throughout the country for
the upcoming year. Let us know if you would like us to visit and if you are willing to help
us host a Regional Alumni Gathering in your area!

Catholic Central Foundation
Catholic Central Foundation—A Legacy of Giving
Sisters of Charity Legacy Society
Donors to the Catholic Central Foundation are often visionaries and pioneers
in the area of philanthropy. They are frequently the forerunners making a
decision to support Catholic Central School above and beyond the traditional
methods. These individuals lead by example to help meet needs that may
otherwise go unmet.
The Sisters of Charity Legacy Society recognizes and honors people who have advised us of
their plans to give a future gift to the Catholic Central Foundation. Such gifts may be in the form
of estate assets, part or all of an IRA, insurance policies, etc. If you have made such provisions
but are not listed below, sharing your intentions with us will ensure that your philanthropic
wishes are followed, and will allow us to properly thank you for your lasting generosity.
Since 1972, the Catholic Central Foundation has served as an independent
501 ( c ) ( 3 ) non-profit corporation allowing individuals to make a difference
for students desiring a Catholic education. The Foundation currently has assets
of $2,280,738 with $458,474 being donated to the school within the past fiscal
year. On the next page you will recognize the names of many families who have
already created scholarships or joined the “Legacy Society.”
Joseph ’41 & Josephine Blattner ’41 Cocca • Dennis W. Fogarty ’74 • Rose O’Brien Martin ’32
Rosemary Ramsey ’66 • Robert A. Roach • Harry & Anna Marie ’37 Rogers
The Sisters of Charity Legacy Society was named to honor those dedicated sisters
who first staffed Catholic Central more than 80 years ago. It was created
to recognize those individuals who have made a deferred gift commitment to
Catholic Central. These gifts can be bequests or insurance beneficiary designations, charitable trust or charitable gift annuities, real estate and other forms of
gifts that will be fully realized in the future. Planned gifts such as these are quickly
becoming the cornerstone for most non-profit groups. It is a pledge showing
your confidence for the future of Catholic Central.
Thank you to all the many supporters who have chosen to be a part of the
Catholic Central Foundation. These donors have allowed the school to grow
and serve the wonderful students of the greater Springfield area. If you would
like to be involved or have already chosen to include Catholic Central in your
estate plans, please contact the Development Office at 937-328-7427 Ext. 112 or
one of the Board members listed below.

Preschool
Message from the Preschool Director
The preschool teaching staff is happy to have the opportunity to share this special time with the youngest children in
the Catholic school system. We believe that what is most
important in the early years of a child’s development is a
safe, healthy and loving environment with an emphasis
on Christian values. Catholic Central Preschool uses The
Creative Curriculum for Preschool, a blueprint for planning
and implementing a developmentally appropriate program.
Catholic Central Preschool teachers plan lessons in compliance with the Ohio
Department of Education Early Learning Standards for English Language Arts,
Social Studies, Science and Mathematics. As always, all classes emphasize play as
a viable learning tool.
Pajama Day!
I see a brown fox looking at me!
Preschool enrollment has remained at capacity for the past several years. The
retention rate from preschool to kindergarten has averaged 50.5% over the
last six years. Catholic Central Preschool students continue to score higher
on kindergarten screening than children who do not attend Catholic Central
Preschool. We believe this is due to our outstanding, professional, hard-working,
and dedicated teaching staff. During the 2010-2011 school year, preschool teachers completed in-service training in ADHD, Assessing Young Children, Avoiding
Power Struggles, Enhancing Literacy Skills Through Music, ODE Learning Standards, and Gross Motor Activities for children. Preschool teachers also completed
the Plexus Team Building Workshops with the Elementary teachers.
Preschool parents were surveyed at the end of the 2010-2011 school year as to
their evaluation of the preschool program and their children’s progress. Parents
overwhelmingly indicated their appreciation of the preschool teachers and that
their children have grown in the areas of language, social development, selfcare, motor, pre-academic, and positive problem solving skills. Our teachers use
innovative methods for making learning fun. The Catholic Central kindergarten
teachers remind us every year that they can immediately recognize a Catholic
Central Preschool student!

During the past three years an anonymous donor from CCHS Class of 1979 has
provided an annual gift. These gifts have been used for new carpet, computers
and software.

Elementary–One Community in Faith and Education
Message from the Elementary School Principal
Catholic Central Elementary School continues to grow in
number, diversity, and spirituality. Our classrooms are filled
with students with minds open to learning and growing in
their relationship with God. Our students may be separated
physically by a short distance, but we are one community.
During our sixth year as a unified Catholic school our parents
came together and determined a need for us to become
grade level buildings. Beginning with the
2011–2012 school year our buildings will become K–3 (Limestone) and 4–6 (Lagonda)
buildings. Many benefits have been identified
for Catholic Central families through this
configuration of campuses. These include
lower, equal class sizes; consistent academic
standards and pacing; implementation of
gifted and remedial classes; professional
collaboration among teachers; and teachers
being assigned to their area of specialty. This
step takes us closer to our goal of becoming
one unified PreK–12 school. We are very
proud of the way our community works
together to build a successful future for
Catholic education.
Elementary–One Community in Faith and Education
Catholic Central Elementary School
Catholic Central students are provided many opportunities for academic, social,
and spiritual growth throughout the school year. We provide “Arts in the Classroom”
presentations and class field trips to places such as SunWatch, the Boonshoft
Museum, the State Capital, the One Room Schoolhouse and Glen Helen.
Our faith is visible as we celebrate weekly Liturgy at our sites, take part in service
projects such as the Annual Second Harvest Food Drive, gather clothing for the
Parent Infant Center, put together shoeboxes for children at Christmas and collect
for the needs of people as they are affected by current life conditions. Students
gather at each campus for morning prayer and come together throughout the
year as one community to pray and celebrate.
People continually remark on the positive,
Catholic culture that is evident in our buildings and classrooms. This culture is very deliberate as we provide our young children with
a strong, firm foundation in both academics
and Christian living.
Our Music Department provides the opportunity to participate in our Children’s
Choir. This group travels to nursing homes to perform and also takes part in the
choral adjudication. Our students are active as song leaders at our Liturgies and
participate in the primary grade Christmas Concert and an intermediate grade
Spring Concert. Catholic Central students are involved in sports through our CYO
programs in football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and cheerleading.
As we look forward to a new year of learning,
fellowship and spiritual renewal, it is appropriate to give thanks to God for all of our
blessings, the most important being our
children.
In His Service,
We joined together in the fall to honor Mary with a Living Rosary; in the winter
we celebrated with Cookies, Crafts, and Carols; and in the spring we had great
fun at our annual Field Day. At these times, we pray together, play together, and
break bread together as we form relationships with students who make up our
community of Catholic Central Elementary School and the greater community of
the entire Catholic Central School.
Mary Callahan, Principal
Catholic Central Elementary School
We continue to thrive in our community as Catholic Central School, dedicated to
academic excellence and the building of our faith!

Catholic Central Junior/Senior High School
Message from the Junior/Senior High School Principal
Catholic Central Junior High School
I want to thank you for your support and prayers for the students, faculty and
There is much pride in the academic and social bridge that exists at Catholic
Central Junior High School.
staff of Catholic Central Junior/Senior High School. Catholic education is only
successful when the alumni, friends, families and community lend support. We
are blessed to have overwhelming support.
I am often asked about what makes Catholic Central different. The answer is
simple; we are family. We are all connected through our experience with Catholic
Central; our memories and our pride in being part of the school community.
This pride goes beyond the walls of the school and the borders of our city; it
lives within our alumni and families throughout their daily lives. I had the joy of
experiencing this pride this summer.
While my wife, Myra, and I were on vacation in Florida, we had the opportunity
to connect with part of the Catholic Central family. We decided to extend our
summer vacation another day, and chose to stay at Innisbrook Golf Resort in
Tarpon Springs, FL. When I called to make our reservation, I was greeted by
the friendly voice of Theresa (Slaughter) Sinnott, a 1970 graduate of Catholic
Central. It was a treat to connect with part of the Catholic Central family so far
from home. Thank you, Theresa, for sharing your memories and enthusiasm for
Catholic Central.
This is an exciting time to be part of Catholic Central School. The faculty and
staff are working to create a 21st century environment in which our students
can grow and develop into conscientious, productive and spiritual members of
society. We continue to build on the successes of the past and work to create an
unprecedented future for our school.
Thank you again for your support and prayers for our students, faculty and staff.
Please keep praying for our success, and may God bless you and your families.
God Bless,
Patrick Finneran, Principal
Catholic Central Junior/Senior High School
The teaching staff takes great satisfaction in working to nourish and nurture our
junior high students at this unique and distinctive juncture in a young person’s life.
Our curriculum is augmented with the
opportunity to take high school foreign
language and math for those students
who qualify in much the same manner
as the high school students do for the
Post Secondary Options program. There
is no doubt that the students benefit
from an enthusiastic, committed, and
experienced staff. Consistently our students have distinguished themselves
as worthy competitors in the county and state Science Fair, Power of the Pen,
speech contests and other academic endeavors. J-Term classes also enrich the
learning experience.
To compliment student life for those in junior high, there are a wide variety of
activities offered in the areas of performing arts and athletics. There is no doubt
that our musical production of Aladdin, Jr. was quite a hit and very well received
by our audiences. This past year, the 8th Grade Volleyball team had an undefeated
season as OHC Champions and softball and baseball were introduced as sports
offerings for the Junior High School.
Yet as we challenge our students to grow intellectually and physically, we
recognize that most importantly, Christ is at the center of our understanding
and belief as we celebrate the presence of God among us. We begin each day in
chapel with prayer that frames the day in a positive, Christ-like atmosphere. We
celebrate Mass together once a week and compliment our teaching with retreats
for both the 7th and 8th graders.
Perhaps the sacramental highlight of the junior high school experience is the
preparation and reception of the sacrament of Confirmation. It is our most
profound hope to enhance the everyday living to which we are called to be a
people of God.
It is our belief that our students are among our most precious gifts.

The Gift of Serving Others
The Gift of Serving Others
Catholic Central Service Ministry
J-Term Service Ministry Class
An important aspect of our Catholic Central School mission is community service. Through
service, our students gain skills in teamwork, leadership, relationship building, goal setting
and planning, patience, organization and understanding the needs of their community.
The vast majority of our students, including 79% of 2011 CCHS graduates, plan to continue
serving and helping others even when it doesn’t count for credit at Central.
Twenty-four juniors and seniors participated in the J-Term Service Ministry class in 2011.
These students volunteered over 300 hours of service to five elementary schools and
six nonprofit organizations during the month of January. Ninety-five percent of J-Term
Service Ministry students believe that the course has challenged them to think more
about who God is and what it means to serve God in their lives.
Highlights
In 2010–2011, our students provided
over 10,000 hours of service with over
70 different churches, nonprofits, and
ministries over the course of the school
year, including:
• St. Vincent DePaul Society
• All Springfield Catholic Parishes
• Springfield and Urbana YMCA
• American Cancer Society
• Pregnancy Resource Center
• Ohio Performing Arts Institute
In 2010–2011, 70% of our senior high
school students volunteered more than
the required amount of 30 service
hours, with 28% volunteering at least
40 hours of individual service.
“I personally grow mentally
and spiritually each time that I use
my God-given gifts to help
someone in need… Service to me is
watching my faith come to life
by my own actions.”

staff participated in the 10th Annual Service Day. Students and staff volunteered
at several local non-profits, schools, nursing homes, and around the Catholic
Central neighborhood. Students from the J-Term Service Ministry class acted as
leaders for small groups who provided service throughout the community. New
this year, two long-term Service Day student leaders, Kara Koehler and Julia Kuntz,
were chosen as Service Day Coordinators, and organized many of the details for
the day’s activities. Over 75% of students in grades 7–12 believe that Service Day
helped them to grow in leadership, teamwork, understanding community needs,
and pride in helping others.
