Politsi train crash wreaks havoc

A FREIGHT train carrying millions of litres of
diesel derailed near Politsi on Friday causing
havoc for local emergency services and seriously injuring the driver.
The train driver was trapped under the train
for more than eight hours.
The train was en-route from Polokwane to
Tzaneen transporting 26 diesel tankers containing more than a million litres of fuel when
it derailed near Letaba Packers just before
17:00.
‘Due to the impact of the crash the cabin
where the driver was seated tore into the
embankment. Half of the driver’s bodywas
buried underground, trapping him under the
cabin,’ said Marcelle Basson from Tzaneen
Ambulance Services.
‘The steel cabin weighs about 80 tons and
could not be lifted to free the man. The rescue
team had to dig to free him from under the
wreckage,’ said Basson.
The driver, a Transnet employee, was freed
between 01:00 and 02:00. He was transported
to Mediclinic Tzaneen where he was in a stable
condition in the Intensive Care Unit at the time
of going to press.
According to Marelize Delport, the hospital’s
spokesperson he sustained serious fractures in
the crash but his legs will not be amputated.
Another two Transnet employees, the assistant driver and learner driver who were in
the cabin of the train at the time of the crash,
fled the scene in shock after the accident.
They sustained minor injuries and were
transported to Tzaneen Mediclinic when they
were found near the scene.
According to Delport they are both still in
hospital and in a stable condition.
Tim Maake, municipal manager of the Mo-
pani District was on the scene Friday night.
Maake said that the next step is for a task
team to handle the clean-up operation in
cooperation with Transnet, the Department of
Environmental Affairs and others to rehabilitate
the areas affected by the diesel spill.
’As a municipality we have employed our
equipment in an attempt contain the diesel
spill as quickly as possible,’ said Maake on
Friday.
He also thanked local farmers and the Letaba
Fire Protection Association who volunteered
their equipment and time to help contain the
diesel spill. The train wreck was not yet
removed from the scene by Tuesday.

POLISIE dokumente wat o a sensitiewe inligting bevat, is Maandag naby die DBV in ‘n
hoop ontdek.
‘n Diensverskaffer is glo die sondebok wat dié
dokumente daar gestort het.
Die inligting volg nadat looklocal Tzaneen
and Surrounds Maandagoggend die nuus
gebreek het oor die dokumente wat onwettig
gestrooi is.
Die bron wat ons geskakel het, wat verkies
om anoniem te bly, was bevrees dat die
dokumente dalk klagstate kan wees wat hangend is, of sake wat dalk nog in die hof moet
verskyn.
Die bron het Vrydag reeds die rommel
gesien en aangeneem dat iemand dit net weer
onwettig daar gestrooi het soos in die
verlede.
By nadere ondersoek Maandagoggend het
die persoon egter gesien dat dit alles polisie
dokumente is.
Van die dokumente sluit in: Aansoek om
indiensneming, kennisgewing van grondwetlike regte, geregtelike nadoodse ondersoek
register, voorvalleboek, lasbrief vir aanhouding van onwettige immigrante, verslag oor
regsgeneeskundige lykskouing, aansoek vir
spesiale verlof, lyfkwitansies vir beskuldiges
wat tronkstraf moet uitdien, hofuitsprake wat
die vonnis en/of boetes opgelê is en die lys is
eindeloos.
Van die dokumente op die toneel dateer van
1971 af. Die meeste is van 1999 tot 2006.
Ronel Otto, provinsiale woordvoerder van
die polisie het Maandagoggend gesê dat dit
moontlik ou dokumente is wat vernietig kon
word, maar nie op die manier waar dit onwettig gestrooi is nie. Kol James Espach, van
die speurafdeling in Tzaneen het Letaba Herald Maandagmiddag na die toneel vergesel.
Daar het hy bevestig dat van die dokumente
sensitiewe inligting bevat en in argiewe moes
wees.
‘Ek kan sien dat van die dokumente nie
hangende sake of klagstate is nie en baie van
die dokumente kan vernietig word, maar soos
jy sê, die persoon kon 50 meter verder gery het
na die stortingsterrein om dit daar te stort.’
Espach het Dinsdag gesê dat ‘n opvolg
ondersoek daarop dui dat ‘n stoorkamer by die
ou kommando kantore skoongemaak is vir
ekstra argiewe stoorplek nadat die menslike
hulpbron bestuur opdrag gegee het.
‘n Diensverskaffer het glo die stoor
skoongemaak.
Hy het skuld erken dat hy die dokumente
naby die DBV gestort het.
Hy beweer dat hy gedink het dit was die
stortingsterrein.
Dié terrein se ingang is egter ongeveer 50
meter verder. Luidens Espach is ‘n saak van
opsetlike saakbeskadiging oopgemaak.
Die diensverskaffer het ‘n verklaring afgelê
en ‘n interne departementele ondersoek sal
volg, volgens Espach.
Die bron het ons Dinsdag geskakel, en
bevestig dat die rommel verwyder is.

Pump thieves sentenced
SIX criminal charged with theft,
were sent to jail for the Letsitele
Periodical Court in the past
week.
Thomas Madaleki Nkuna, Jomo
Joseph Mashele and Israel
Shikwambana were each sentenced 10 months imprisonment
for stealing a waterpump at a farm
in Letsitele in February.
Ella Joseph Baloyi, Given Makholofilele and Twanano Gandoro
Mamitwa were each sentenced six
months imprisonment for theft.
The trio stole chickens at a farm in
April.
In other unrelated convictions,
Alfred Raphotle was sentenced to
six months imprisonment while
Sello Lekgowa Malapane was sentenced to two years for assault
with intent to cause grievous bodily harm by the Tzaneen Magistrate's Court last week.

AN alleged rape victim's hope for early justice was dashed
when the case was recently postponed indefinitely by the
Ritavi Magistrate's Court.
The case against a medical doctor, David Dumisane
Chauke (46) who allegedly raped the 18-year-old girl in
Nkowankowa in October last year was postponed pending
the results of DNA tests.
It is alleged that the girl, who hails from a village just
outside Nkowankowa had visited the doctor at his practice
when the incident happened at around 15:00.
The suspect was arrested soon after the case was reported
and charged with rape. He is currently out on R1000 bail
pending the next court appearance.
The victim's relative, who could not be named to protect
the girl's identity, said the family wanted the matter to be
resolved as quickly as possible.
She accused the police of keeping them in the dark
regarding the developments in the case.
Ritavi police spokesperson, Constable Vongani Ngobeni
said as soon as the DNA results are back from the forensic
laboratory, the suspect will be summoned to appear in court
and the victim and her family will be notified.

Tzaneen
Tzaneen police arrested 13 people over the past week for
various criminal activities.
Three people were arrested for shoplifting, one for driving
under the influence of alcohol, two for assault with intent to
cause grievous bodily harm and one for robbery.
Two people were arrested for rape, one for housebreaking
and sexual assault, one for murder and one for interfering
with police work.
Letsitele
A total of 32 people were arrested in the Letsitele area
over the past week for various criminal activities.
Letsitele police spokesperson, Constable Reoh Mabunda
said one person was arrested for rape, one for theft out of
motor vehicle, one for arson, one for contravening the
Environmental Act, one for theft and two people were
arrested for robbery. Three people were arrested for common assault, one for malicious damage to property, seven
for contravening the Road Traffic Act, two for possession of
stolen property, 10 for public drinking, one for illegal
trading and one for possession of dagga.
Gravelotte
Gravelotte police apprehended nine people in the past
week for various criminal activities. According to Constable
Phineaus Masihla, the spokesperson for the Gravelotte
police station, three people were arrested for possession of
dagga, one for theft and six for possession of unlicensed
firearm.

Strike in 6th day
AT THE time of going to press on Tuesday, 104
striking National Union of Mineworkers
(NUM) members were continuing their underground sit-in at Cons Murch Mine in
Gravelotte.
The workers who had spent their sixth day
underground had vowed not to resurface until
management pays them the dividends for their
shares, which they claim amount to R200
million.
More than 800 other workers, who had also
downed tools in solidarity with their colleagues underground were protesting outside
the shaft.
According to one of the NUM shop steward
who spoke on condition of anonymity, management says they do not have money to pay
out the dividends of the shares as the mine
made only R50 million profit since workers
bought shares. The money has allegedly since
been re-invested.

Bullet rips through man’s hand, kills wife
A WOMAN died after a bullet which penetrated her husband's hand, hit her in the
chest during an armed robbery at Burgersdorp
in the Maake area on Friday night.
It is alleged that six armed men broke into
the couple's home and started firing shots.
They ordered the wife to cover her head with
a blanket and then demanded a firearm from

'A shot was fired at the husband, which
penetrated his hand and hit his wife in the
chest,' said Seroto.
The suspects then fled the scene. Nothing

No one has been arrested and police are
investigating a case of murder.
Meanwhile, Maake police station commander, Colonel Stefanus van Schalkwyk appealed to residents of Burgersdorp and surrounding villages to assist with information
that might lead to the arrest of the suspect.

According to one of the miners, the situation
nearly got out of control when the management refused that the striking workers
take food to their colleagues underground.
Management later allegedly relented.
The strike started last week Wednesday
when a group of miners on a day shift refused
to return to the surface when their shift ended
demanding that dividend earnings be paid out
to them.
The strike action intensified on Thursday
when about 200 other miners refused to go
underground and staged a protest outside the
mine's premises.
The entire workforce of more than 900
workers have now stopped working and spend
their days toyi-toying outside the mine shaft
where their colleagues are staging an underground sit-in.
Attempts to get comments from management at Cons Murch drew a blank as their
telephones just rings unanswered.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani
Mulaudzi said members of the Public Order
Policing have been deployed to the mine to
monitor the situation.
’The police are keeping a close eye on the
situation,' said Mulaudzi.
Negotiations between Union representatives and management are continuing in a bid
to find a solution.

to come forward and identify recovered stolen
goods.
The items were stolen during house breakins in Tzaneen and surrounding areas, and
goods that remain unclaimed will be auctioned off.
Tzaneen police spokesperson, Constable
Glenda Maimele said there a lot of unclaimed
goods which include televisions, radios and
other appliances. Victims are requested to
check the SAPS 13-store at the Tzaneen police
station to see if their goods were recovered.
In order to collect goods from the 13-store,
owners will be requested to produce proof of
payment and case numbers.

The National Veld and Forest Fire Act of
1998, section 4(13) states: “ an owner is
obliged to prepare and maintain a firebreak
and that it is wide enough and long enough to
have a reasonable chance of preventing a veld
fire from spreading to or from neighbouring
land.”
Fire breaks can be made by burning, slashing or hoeing.

SIX suspected rhino poachers appeared in the Phalaborwa Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Wednesday night in Gravelotte after
police received information that
they were planning to trespass on a

Girls between 2 and 22 years old can look
forward to a very exciting pageant this year as
the organizers have planned a fun filled day on
August 3 at the Letaba showgrounds in Hall
B.
New to the pageant will be a photo competition for mother and children, or the whole
family. This will be combined with the morning programme during which a baby pageant
for all children up to the age of 5 will be held.
Due to public demand they have decided to
add a "Glitz and Glamour" event for the little
ones where they can show off in party
dresses.
The theme for girls aged 6 to 22 is "Night of
the Stars" event. With lots of great prizes up for
grabs, this pageant is not to be missed. The
"Glitz and Glamour" event will kick of at 10:00
on Saturday for the little ones and the "Night of
the Stars" will start off with registration and
arrival from 15:00. Crowning of the "Stars" will
take place between 19:00 and 20:00.
Entrants don't need to have any modeling
experience as the competition will be judged
solely on their performance on the day.

THE LETABA Show will once again host an
exciting art competition.
The theme for the annual art competition
hosted by the Letaba Show in partnership with
Avuxeni Computer Academy is ’Living it up:
Farm Style!’ or ‘Anything Agri.’
For children younger than six years they are
hosting a colouring competition. The picture is
available for download from www.letabashow.co.za / www.avuxeni.co.za.
For primary and secondary school contestants the rules for the art competition is as
follows:
Any medium may be used on an A3 sized
paper. The entrant’s name, school, age, contact
number and the artwork’s title must appear on
the back.
The open category contestants may use any
sized canvass with any medium to enter.
Please ensure that the artwork is titled correctly
and that a contact number is attached to the
artwork. All entries must be submitted before
or on July 26.
All artworks received will be put on display
for the public to enjoy in Hall A during the
Letaba Show from August 8 -10.
The winners will be notified telephonically
and announced in the media.
The winner of each category will receive a
floating shield award together with a cash
voucher.
A participation certificate will be awarded
for each person entering the competition.
Entries can be taken to the Letaba Show
grounds or any Avuxeni branch in your area.

VIR die wat my nie ken nie, ek is ‘n persoon wat
nie baie lief is om te praat nie en maar baie stil

Die rede van hierdie skrywe? Ek dreig al

FASHIONABLE ladies in high heels, senior
public officials and successful business people
all got their hands dirty on Monday as the
Nelson Mandela celebrations kicked off with a
hive of activity at the Ntokoto créche at Molati
village near Letsitele.
The Tzaneen Chamber of Commerce, Gteda
(Greater Tzaneen Economic Development
Agency) and the Greater Tzaneen Municipality
took hands last year to form a partnership to
honour and uphold the Madiba legacy and this
year the initiative is continuing and gathering
even more momentum.
The first phase of the Madiba celebrations
kicked off at the Ntokoto créche on Monday.
Two new class rooms sponsored and built by
Gteda and the municipality, a jungle gym with
swings and slides as well as stationery and a
variety of gifts for the kids were handed over.
The Presidfent of the Chamber, Rona
McGaffin, the CEO of Gteda, Kwena Mophoto
and Councillor Cassius Machimane, who represented Tzaneen’s Mayor, were amongst the
diginatries present. The Circuit Manager for the
region, Mr Thobela, as well as a senior sister
from the Department of Health, were also in
attendance.
Staff members of both Gteda and the municipality, members of the Tzaneen Chamber
and guests got their hands dirty by painting the
new rooms, even mixing daga and playing with
the children at the créche.
Some of the sponsors, who contributed to the
success of the project, and other Madiba
projects this week, are Paint Pot, who
sponsored the paint for the new buildings,
Gteda, GTM, Hotel@Tzaneen, Crawdaddy’s,
Sugar Hill, Letaba Herald, Park Butchery,
ADA,
Leo's Kitchen, Premjee, Venbeck, ABSA,
Tzaneen Chamber of Commerce and others.

Vossie onnies fokus op leerders
DIE Hoërskool Ben Vorster se matriekonderwysers het weereens gewys dat hulle die
onderwys as roeping ervaar met die fokus op
die kind.
Tydens die wintervakansie het 'n paar van
die onderwysers hulle warm laatslaap-bed en
niksdoen die rug gekeer en hulle tyd verwyl
deur winterskool aan te bied vir sommige van
die omgewing se graad 12's wat nie die
voorreg het om die uitmuntende onderwys te
ontvang wat hulle eie graad 12's kry nie.
Die Vossie onderwysers is dit eens dat die
kool die sous werd was, aangesien die dankbaarheid van die leerders genoeg beloning

MERENSKY High School’s computer boffins faced a new challenge when they competed in the
computer applications olympiad
recently.
The CoZa Cares Foundation
from Cape Town, who's focus is
on Enabling ICT in Education, recently launched an interesting and
challenging national project.
Merensky computer geeks rose
to the challenge, and entered this
exciting competition in vast numbers.
Excellent results were achieved,
with Danie Leeuwner receiving
the top marks in the school.
Vongani Mlondobuzi and Rebecca Hyland took second an
third place in the school respectively.
Estian Botha took the first place
in Grade 8 and Allen Mushwana
scored the highest mark in Grade
9.
Mynhardt Bouwer was at the top
of the Grade 10 class and Rebecca

THE Tzaneen Tritech Regional
Round for 2013 will be taking
place at Ben Vorster School on
Friday 19 July.
The public are welcome to
view the projects from 17:00 on
Friday afternoon – be prepared to
be blown away by the innovative
research being produced by our
youngsters!
Tritech is an exciting scientific
research competition open to
learners in Limpopo and a growing number of other regions in
South Africa.
Tritech was initiated in 2009 by
a group of Tzaneen teachers and
representatives from local industry, and has since gone from
strength to strength!
Learners who participate in
Tritech are required to independently plan and carry out research
projects, and then present them at
their local schools.
Projects that are judged to be of
a high standard are then presented at the regional rounds and
then finally at the national round,
where there are awesome prizes
to be won in the different categories!
In this way, learners become
well-equipped for tertiary level
education and learn how to use
science and technology in a responsible manner.
They need to assess the impact
of the project on the environment
and how it could improve
people’s lives.
Judging is done by experts in
the various categories of the projects, as well as by the learners
themselves.
MERENSKY High Schools' soccer stars were
recently chosen to join a soccer academy
practice squad where some of the future
Kaizer Chief players will be chosen.
They participated in the U/ 17 youth tournament held at the Mahwelereng stadium on
July 16.
The aim of the tournament was to enable
soccer scouts to nominate certain players for
the Soccer Academy and to award promising
players the opportunity to possibly be included in the near future to form part of the
Kaizer Chiefs Squad.
Two of Merensky's Soccer stars were nominated, namely Kagiso Modjadji and Elliot
Delsouiller.
They will be joining the Soccer Academy
practice squad in September and their performance will determine their soccer future.
Coach Seph Oosthuizen is extremely proud
of these two, and wishes them the best of
luck.
All Merensky scholars hope to see them
proudly wearing the Kaizer Chiefs colours in
the near future.
NEW HOSTEL LEADERS: Merensky's hostel
pupils can look forward to an exciting new
phase, as the new Hostel Head boy and Head
Girl were recently selected for 2013/2014.

Altesaam 12 spanne het deelgeneem. Ses
O/15- en ses O/18-spanne het teen mekaar
kragte gemeet. Skole wat die toernooi bygewoon het, was Hoërskool Ben Vorster,
Penryn College, Overkruin, Lichtenburg,
Nkowankowa, Dr. EG Jansen en Montana.
Hoërskool Ben Vorster se O/15-krieketspan
het drie van hulle wedstryde gewen. Kaptein,

die spanlede wat Suid-Afrika sal verteenwoordig by die World Carp Classic in September by
Lake Bolsena in Italië.
Die span is aangekondig tydens die prysuitdeling van die SA Carp Classic by Letaba
River Lodge Saterdag.
Die SA Carp Classic hengelkompetisie het
van 8 tot 13 Julie by die Tzaneendam plaasgevind.
Quinton Smith, Victor Whittle en Jesse
Niemand van die K-Karp span is as die algehele wenners van die kompetisie
aangekondig. Hulle het 11 visse met ‘n totale
gewig van 128.54 kg gevang.
Wally Erasmus het die grootste karp, met ‘n
gewig van 16.4kg uitgetrek.
Dirk Engelbrecht het die tweedeprys
ontvang in die kategorie vir ‘n 15.6kg bielie
wat hy gevang het.
Meer as 1 050kg karp is tydens die kompetisie gevang en weer vrygelaat deur sowat

kompetisie.
’Ons sal graag volgende jaar weer die Classic
by die Tzaneendam wil hou,’ sê George Matthee, een van die direkteure van die SA Carp
Classic. Hy voeg by dat dit afhang van hoe die
verhoging van die damwal karphengel sal
beïnvloed.

12.55kg karp tydens die SA Carp Classic by die
