Wednesday 29 July 2015: Newsletter Term 3 Edition 1 Principal`s
Phone: 8462169 email: [email protected] Mobile: 0274688003 Wednesday 29 July 2015: Newsletter Term 3 Edition 1 Principal’s News It has been a wonderful start to Term 3 with the welcoming of groups from Japan and Korea into the school. The relationship with our sister school Nagisa Junior High School in Hiroshima, Japan has been going for 21 years. The students and teachers will be in our school for 2 weeks where they will be participating in our classroom programmes and learning English from our students. At the end of last term I put a survey out to the community on the effectiveness of our new report format and student led conferences. The results were very positive with a strong majority of the feedback supportive of the new report format and student led conferences. If you are interested in seeing the detailed results please email the office on [email protected] to get a copy. Further surveys on topical issues will be sent out to parents and caregivers in Terms 3 and 4. Jonathan Hughes Principal [email protected] New Website for parents The Ministry of Education has a new website for parents of school age children. The website has ideas how parents can help their children at school, information around National Standards and what learning should look like in schools. To access the website go to http://parents.education.govt.nz/ . School Cross Country Our annual school Cross Country is taking place on Wednesday August 5. It will start at 11am from Motions Road Quarry. Students will run around Western Springs Lake on a 2.4km course. Students will need a good pair of running shoes, P.E gear, a towel, a plastic bag and a water bottle. The event will finish around 12pm. Due to the open nature of the course we require as much parent help as possible. If you are able to help with marshalling on the day please contact the school office on [email protected]. Parents are also welcome to come along and watch. Desks donation With the integration of our new modern learning environment furniture into our classrooms in Term 2 a number of our old desks have become surplus to our requirements. We have been investigating how these could be put to good use by other schools. So far we have donated 30 desks to Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Te Rawitiroa School in Whangarei. Cultural Festival At the end of Term 3 we will be holding a school Cultural Festival. The aim of the festival will be to showcase the vast number of cultures in our school through a performance night. As part of the Cultural Festival we would like to invite parents with skills and knowledge in cultural performance to help staff and students to prepare for the Festival. If you are able to help please email Jonathan Hughes on [email protected]. Any help would be appreciated. Newsletter going Digital With the large number of parents and caregivers now reading the newsletter online we have decided from Term 3 onwards that the newsletter will no longer be sent home to every child in a paper format. If you would still like to receive a paper newsletter please contact the school office on 8462169 or [email protected]. Please also check that you have been receiving emails from the school office. Tuck shop hours changing From Term 3 the tuck shop hours will be changing. It will now be open at Morning Tea (10.05am) and Lunch Eating (11.35am) only. It will no longer be open at Rec. It was a beautiful day, although the wind proved challenging at times for our goal shooters. Year 7 Team: Sarah Hannay, Emily Baden-Myers, Amy Ingold, Jaeda Asi-Marsters, Norah Samuel-Tangimetua, Maia Blockley-Rudkins, Kiana Alinson, Milly Woodley-Phillips. The Year 7s showed great positivity and played every game with pride. A special thank you to Karen Ingold who managed the team on the day, and Alex Munro who supported her. Year 8 Team: Milan Stevenson, Teghan Jamieson, Megan Williams, Philomena Neli, Natasha Tipelu, Naomi Filipo, Aloina Asa, Nqobile Ngwenya. The Year 8s proved themselves through their adaptiveness, and tenacity on the court. They were competitive and challenged all the teams faced, making it through to the quarter finals where they lost a tight game. We had an ex Pasadena student, Katalina Areai, take time out of her busy schedule at Western Springs College to umpire for us, as well as Chook Fraser who has had a long association with our school. Not only did they do a great job with the umpiring, they also assisted with some beneficial coaching tip Thank you to those parents who transported us there and to those who came to support us during the day. The encouragement kept the girls going through a very tiring day. A huge thank you also to Mrs Lisa White for her training and support of our teams on the day.
