NORDIWA 2013 – 13TH NORDIC WASTEWATER CONFERENCE
Welcome to NORDIWA 2013!
NORDIWA 2013, the Nordic Wastewater Conference is now arranged for the 13th time. The Conference has been arranged every second year since 1989 in the Nordic countries. The Swedish Water and
Wastewater Association (Svenskt Vatten), organises the conference in co-operation with the Danish Water and Wastewater Association (DANVA), the Finnish Water Utilities Association – FIWA, Norwegian
Water (Norsk Vann), Icelandic Energy and Utilities (Samorka) and NORDIWA. We are very happy to
arrange this 13th Nordic Wastewater Conference along with VASYD and Malmö City.
The objective of the conference is to promote exchange of experience, knowledge and skills between
the practitioners and scientists within wastewater technology in the Nordic countries. We believe that
NORDIWA 2013 will capture the essence and variety of the new knowledge that we see today in the
quickly growing wastewater area. Through our conference with its eight different thematic sessions and
by the 120 invited speakers and poster authors, we hope you will gain both a wider network and new
knowledge and ideas.

TECHNICAL TOUR • THURSDAY 10 OCTOBER
There are five interesting and inspiring technical tours to choose from during the last day of the conference. All technical tours are planned to arrive at Malmö Railway Station at 17:00, with exception of
the visit to Lundtofte WWTP that will drive via Copenhagen Airport at 17:00 and is scheduled to be
at Malmö Railway Station at 17:45. When you plan your return trip, please take into account possible
delays due to traffic jams etc. Your choice of tour was made when registering for the conference, please
see the list of participants for your choice of technical tour.
Lundåkra WWTP in Landskrona
Strategic work for protecting a wastewater treatment plant from hazardous substances
At your visit in Landskrona (NSVA), that will be hold in Swedish, you will get a presentation from
the Operation Manager at Lundåkra WWTP, the Environmental Engineer and the Communication
Manager. They will speak about NSVA, the problems related to the hazardous chemicals and the risk
of elimination of the function of the WWTP. Finally we go out and have a look at the toxicity warning
system and the equipment used for sampling at the sewer network.
Sjölunda wastewater treatment plant
Manammox – anammox in the mainstream, ANITA ™ Mox and parts of Sjölunda WWTP
Sjölunda WWTP in Malmö celebrate this year its 50th anniversary. The configuration of the plant is
strongly reflected by the close cooperation with Lund University the last 35 years. Its high-loaded activated sludge plant with nitrification in trickling filters and post-denitrification in moving-bed biofilm
(MBBR) reactor makes the plant quite unique. The nearly total separation of the COD and enhanced
nitrogen removal processes makes the plant also very suitable for the next revolution in nutrient removal, fully autotrophic nitrogen removal (i.e. nitritation-anammox) in the mainstream. During the visit an
opportunity will be given to look at the pilot plant for implementing Manammox and ANITA™ Mox
– AnoxKaldnes developed a 1-stage deammonification process and parts of Sjölunda WWTP.
Lundtofte wastewater treatment plant, Denmark
New MBR plant in operation and fluid bed sludge incineration
Return bus trip via Copenhagen Airport.
In 2012 Mølleå the WWTP expanded the plant’s treatment capacity and improved the treatment of the
wastewater. The reason for the capacity expansion is new connecting catchments from the area in combination with the stricter effluent standards expected in the future, especially on nitrogen and phosphorus. At the plant the sludge is incinerated in a fluidized bed furnace.
A walk through different parts of Malmö
Green infrastructure for recreation and stormwater management
Three different locations will be visited during the study visit:
Gyllins trädgård: an overgrown nursery garden in the eastern parts of Malmö, next to the Riseberga
stream is undergoing a transition to become a residential area. Detention facilities have been built both
on private and public land.
Skogholms meadows: in an existing industrial area next to the Riseberga stream, a recreational area has
been created as part of a stormwater detention facility.
Augustenborg: in a residential area from the 1950s the combined sewage system has been separated.
The stormwater is now conveyed in open canals, swales and ponds with the possibility to detain large
amounts of stormwater.

Cities of the Future – City planning and water
The housing exhibition Bo01, held in Malmö, Sweden in 2001 marked the beginning of a renewed
approach to urban planning. The work focused in particular on the use of resources, holistic planning
and emotions & aesthetics. Bo01 is history but Western Skåne continues to be one of Sweden’s most
expansive areas and new neighbourhoods are being built. We will look more closely at how the legacy
of Bo01 has come to affect the expansion of the Hyllie area in Malmö and Brunnshög area in Lund. In
Brunnshög two large unique research facilities, ESS and MarxIV are currently being constructed
