S
ince beginning his tenure as
Georgia State University’s seventh president on Jan. 1, 2009,
Mark P. Becker has launched a major
strategic planning initiative focused on
positioning the university, as it sets its
sights on its second century, to become
one of the nation’s premier urban universities. Embracing its commitments to
recognized excellence in education and
research, as well as its unique location
in and commitment to Atlanta, the university is poised to rise to new levels of
accomplishment and impact.
Under Becker’s leadership, GSU in
2011 approved and began implementation of its 10-year Strategic Plan, whose
mission is to position Georgia State “as
a dynamic academic community where
teaching and research combine to produce leaders and create solutions to conquer the challenges of the 21s century.”
In 2010 Becker oversaw the
launching of the Second Century Initiative for faculty excellence, most often
referred to as “2CI.” This initiative is
recruiting 100 additional faculty members to Georgia State over five years to
build internationally recognized scholarly strength and critical mass in areas
of priority.
Seeking to recognize the importance
and influence of international commerce and technology for Georgia State
students and researchers, Becker has
worked to enhance Georgia State Uni-
14
versity’s global reach, the cornerstone of
which was the opening of GSU’s Confucius Institute in 2010, a partnership with
the Beijing Language and Culture University and one of the first business-oriented Confucius Institutes in the United
States.
In addition, Becker leads a diverse
university whose undergraduate academic profile continues to rise, and a
number of the university’s excellent
graduate programs enjoy strong national
rankings.
Becker also has overseen a number
of physical improvements and enhancements including: the opening of the
Parker H. “Pete” Petit Science Center;
the university’s first freshman housing
and dining complex, to be followed
by the Piedmont North housing and
dining complex coming on line this fall;
the construction of on-campus Greek
housing; and the purchasing of land for
future growth and expansion in downtown Atlanta.
Prior to his appointment to Georgia
State, Becker served as executive vice
president for academic affairs and
provost at the University of South
Carolina.
Before assuming that role, Becker
spent three years at the University of
Minnesota as a biostatistics professor,
dean of the School of Public Health and
assistant vice president of Public Health,
Preparedness and Emergency Response.
2011-12 GEORGIA STATE WOMEN’S TENNIS
From 1989 to 2000, Becker was a
professor and associate dean for academic affairs at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. He also
has held academic appointments at the
University of Washington, the University of Florida and Cornell University.
Becker earned his bachelor’s degree in
mathematics from Towson State University and his doctorate in statistics from
the Pennsylvania State University.
Active in the Atlanta community,
Becker is a member of the Central
Atlanta Progress Executive Committee;
Atlanta Committee for Progress Board
of Directors; Georgia Aquarium Board;
Woodruff Arts Center Board of Trustees;
Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce
Board of Directors; Georgia Chamber of
Commerce Board of Directors; Georgia
Research Alliance Board of Trustees;
Commerce Club Operating Board;
ARCHE (Atlanta Regional Council for
Higher Education) Board; the Coalition
of Urban Serving Universities Board of
Directors; and the World Affairs Council
of Atlanta Board of Directors.
During his career, Becker has been
involved in several professional associations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the
International Biometric Society and the
American Statistical Association, where
he is a fellow. He has been principal
investigator on research grants from the
National Institutes of Health and the
National Science Foundation, and he has
published extensively in leading journals
of medicine, public health, and statistics.
Becker has served on a number of editorial boards, was co-editor of Sociological
Methodology, and was a guest editor for
Sociological Methods and Research and
for the Journal of the American Statistical Association.
Becker and his wife, Laura Voisinet,
have two grown children, Matthew and
Julia.

C
harged with leading Georgia State
University athletics in an era of
unprecedented growth, Director of
Athletics Cheryl L. Levick is changing the
face of Panther athletics with the historic
launch of Georgia State football and the
development of the overall program.
Under Levick’s leadership, the inaugural
football season of 2010 was an unqualified success as the first-year team posted a
winning record on the field while averaging
nearly 17,000 fans for home games at the
Georgia Dome. As a result, Georgia State
received tremendous positive exposure,
both locally and nationally.
Levick’s first two-plus years on the job
have been marked by dramatic upgrades in
facilities and fund-raising. Annual giving
to the Panther Athletic Club has increased
more than ten-fold, and the two largest gifts
in the history of GSU athletics have been
secured. Construction projects include the
GSU Football Practice Complex, new facilities for strength and conditioning and sports
medicine, and upgrades to every venue used
by the Panthers.
Her forward thinking is evident in her
reorganization of the GSU Athletics Association and the ambitious, six-year strategic
plan she has developed for the future of
Georgia State athletics.
With Levick at the helm, Georgia State’s
athletic programs are rising in stature in
the Colonial Athletic Association. Since her
arrival, GSU has claimed six CAA team titles
and 16 individual conference crowns while
boasting nine CAA Scholar-Athlete of the
Year honorees. GSU student-athletes have
also excelled in the classroom, maintaining
a cumulative grade point average over 3.0
while completing more than 5,000 hours of
community service in 2010-11.
With a resume of experience and
success at prestigious athletics programs
across the nation, Levick came to Georgia
State in March 2009 from the University of
Maryland, where she served as chief of staff/
executive senior athletic director, overseeing
daily management of the 27-sport program.
Her impressive career includes seven years
as director of athletics at Santa Clara University and Saint Louis University as well as
nearly two decades in senior administrative
positions at Maryland and Stanford University and stints with the Pacific 10 Conference
and the NCAA headquarters.
Levick was named the 2001 Division
I Athletic Administrator of the Year by the
National Association of Collegiate Women
Athletic Administrators (NACWAA). In
2005-06, she received the General Sports
TURF Systems Athletic Director of the Year
Award for the NCAA Division I Central
Region, and she was recognized in both
1998 and 1999 as one of the nation’s Top 25
Female Sports Executives by Street & Smith’s
Sports Business Journal. She is a past president of the NCAA Division I-AAA Athletic
Directors Association.
Before going to Maryland in 2007, she
served three years (2004-07) as director
of athletics at Saint Louis, where she led
the transition from Conference USA to
the Atlantic 10 Conference and served as
the lead fund-raiser for a new $80 million
on-campus arena and practice complex. In
2006, she received the Carl O. Bauer Award
as the top amateur sports figure in the St.
Louis area.
Levick also spent four years (2000-04) as
director of athletics and recreation at Santa
Clara University, where she oversaw a major
renovation of the school’s basketball arena.
The Broncos’ women’s soccer team captured
the 2001 national championship, still the
only NCAA title in school history.
Prior to Santa Clara, Levick worked 12
years at Stanford as senior associate athletic
director and senior woman administrator.
She served as the primary administrator for
33 varsity programs that won 44 national
championships and six straight Sears Cup
titles during her tenure.
Levick previously served as assistant
commissioner of the Pac-10 Conference,
assistant director of communications and
women’s programs at the NCAA, women’s
gymnastics coach and associate athletic
director at Slippery Rock University, and
assistant gymnastics coach and synchronized swim coach at Indiana University. She
began her career at Pattonville Senior High
School in St. Louis, Mo., coaching gymnastics and women’s track.
Levick is a 1974 graduate of the University of Missouri, and she holds a masters
degree in athletic administration from
Indiana University. She has two daughters:
Heather, who is married to Michael Klass,
and Melissa.

2012 Spring Preview
W
ith seven returning letterwinners, including four allconference players, the Georgia State
women’s tennis team enters the 2012
spring 17-match regular season with
a primary goal of claiming a conference championship and avenging its
runner-up finish last season. Georgia
State opens the spring slate on Saturday, Jan. 21 in Greenville, S.C. against
Furman of the Southern Conference
(11:00 a.m.).
The Panthers enter the season ranked
No. 58 in the nation according to the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association
Women’s National Team Rankings announced on Jan. 4. They finished last
season ranked No. 55 after posting a
15-4 record and advancing to the CAA
Championship finals before falling
to No. 44 William & Mary. The team
recorded a school-record nine consecutive victories to open last season on
the way to the 15 wins. The Tribe are
ranked No. 43 to start the 2012 spring,
so the Panthers know what their challenge is this year.
“Our goals are very clear: we want to
end this season in the top 40 rankings
and win the Colonial Athletic Association championship,” Lisac said, “Both
of those goals would qualify us for
NCAA nationals. We don’t just want
to go to nationals, we want to win in
the first round of nationals. This hasn’t
ever been accomplished by the Georgia
State program.”
Several players stood out last year
as the team featured four All-CAA
performers. Leading the effort was
32
sophomore Abigail Tere-Apisah who
took home CAA Rookie of the Year,
All-CAA Singles first team, All-CAA
Doubles first team and CAA Championship Most Outstanding Performer
honors last year. Other standouts
included senior Tereza Lerova (AllCAA Singles second team) and sophomore Maryna Kozachenko (All-CAA
Doubles first team).
Following the close defeat vs. William
& Mary in the finals, GSU prepares for
the 2012 season with several returning
starters focused on achieving the expectations set forth by fifth-year head
coach Miha Lisac.
SINGLES LINEUP
GSU returns two All-CAA performers
to the top of its singles lineup in TereApisah and Lerova. The pair alternated
atop the Panthers’ singles lineup last
season, with each posting a winning
record in the No. 1 slot. Tere-Apisah
earned a stellar 14-2 mark last season
in singles, including a 5-1 record at
the top spot. As a freshman, she lost
her lone match at the No. 1 spot to
Jacksonville senior Eve Castaing, the
2010-11 Atlantic Sun Player of the
Year. Tere-Apisah finished the year 8-2
in her final 10 matches.
Lerova returns after earning a 10-9
record last year, including a 7-6 mark
at No. 1 singles. She was named CAA
Co-Player of the Week on Mar. 9 last
year after she helped GSU defeat CAA
rival UNC Wilmington, 5-2, with a
straight-set victory at No. 1 singles.
The Czech Republic native, along with

season. She went 10-9 in singles

Tere-Apisah, gives Lisac a potent onetwo punch atop the singles lineup.
“Abigail has been and will be our number one player,” Lisac said, “We have
some outstanding players coming back
who can all serve as leaders.”
After losing an important member
to graduation in Katerina Gresova,
the Panthers will look towards a mix
of veterans and newcomers to provide depth to their singles lineup in
2012. Stepping into the void will be
sophomore Maryna Kozachenko who
notched a 10-6 overall record last
season. She arrived just prior to the
start of the spring season and split time
at No. 3 (6-4) and No. 4 (4-3) singles
last year. She was named the CAA
Player of the Week on Feb. 22 after she

clinched back-to-back matches with
singles victories.
Junior Martina Ondrackova will also
provide valuable depth for GSU this
season. Ondrackova returns this year
after earning a 5-5 record in singles.
She was named to the 2011 Women’s
All-Academic Team at Georgia State.
GSU will expect junior transfer student
Whitney Byrd and freshman Masa
Grgan to step into starting roles in
the singles lineup this season. Byrd
didn’t play in a match last season at
Georgia State after she transferred
from perennial NAIA power Auburn
Montgomery. Byrd went 6-5 in singles
for Georgia State in the fall, including
a first round victory at the ITA Regionals in Gainesville, Fla.
“Even though she is an upper-classmen, we almost feel like we have
another newcomer,” Lisac said of Byrd.
“She will be new to the lineup, but we
don’t expect her to be in the freshmen
waters as far as inexperience. We think
Whitney will step in and show what
she’s capable of right from the start.”
Grgan arrived at Georgia State from
Maribor, Slovenia prior to the fall
semester. She posted solid numbers in
the fall for GSU, going 4-1 in singles
throughout the fall season. She posted
a perfect 3-0 record to win her singles
flight against SEC and Atlantic Sun
competition in her first collegiate action at the Roberta Allison Fall Classic
hosted by the University of Alabama.
She followed that performance by taking a first round match in the consolation bracket at the ITA Regionals. She
lost two matches in the ITA Regionals,
one coming to eventual consolation
bracket champion Aline Berkenbrock
of North Florida after Grgan took the
first set. Then the freshman dropped a
match to top-seeded Lauren Embree
of Florida, last season’s NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
Ga., and competed in the Premier TA
Championships in May of 2009 in
Acworth, Ga. The Panthers also welcome walk on Megan Nelms, who was
a four-year starter and star at nearby
Parkview High School in Gwinnnett
County.
“We were fortunate to add Masa in the
fall semester,” Lisac said, “She has provided a stable point so far. She adapted
pretty well to the team and we’re looking forward to seeing what she can
contribute in the spring.”
“Chaimaa has been doing some very
good things in practice and we’re
looking forward to having her contribute,” Lisac said, “We expect all of our
newcomers, which include Alex and
Megan, to contribute this season.
GSU will add two signees to its spring
lineup in Chaimaa Roudami and Alexandra Brouillette. Roudami hails from
Casablanca, Morocco and won the U16
doubles title at the International Junior
Championships of Botswana. Brouillette grew up in nearby Kennesaw,
The Panthers will have a formidable
singles lineup that will try to replicate
the success of last season’s 69-40 (.633)
record.
Junior Whitney Byrd will participate in her first season at Georgia State
after transferring from NAIA power Auburn-Montgomery prior to the
2010-11 season.

Under Lisac, the Georgia State women’s tennis team has taken pride in
capturing the doubles point in dual

stellar 35-18 overall in doubles matches for a .660 winning percentage.
GSU returns a doubles pair atop its
lineup that can go toe-to-toe with
the best competition in the country.
Tere-Apisah and Kozachenko posted
an outstanding 12-2 record last year,
earning a No. 46 ranking in the ITA

pair was named an alternate for the
NCAA Doubles Championships and
an All-CAA Doubles First Team selection. The duo went a perfect 2-0 in the
CAA Championships following a regular season in which they won seven
straight matches to close the year.
The Panthers are looking for a second
doubles pair to emerge from its group
of returners and newcomers. Leading
the way is Lerova, who paired with
two different teammates last season
to earn a 12-6 record in doubles. The
team may have found a third doubles
pair this fall in Byrd and Grgan. The
duo earned wins in consecutive rounds
against SEC competition at the ITA

M
iha Lisac, a former player and
men’s assistant coach at Georgia State, begins his fifth season as
head coach of the women’s tennis
program at his alma mater.
Lisac, the 2009 CAA Coach of the
Year, took over the head coaching position in the summer of 2007
after serving as the men’s assistant
coach from 2005-07. He saw the opportunity to lead the program as “a
chance to give back to the school and
the community that helped to raise
me.” Lisac has been associated with
Georgia State tennis for more than a
decade as a student-athlete, assistant
coach and head coach.
In four seasons at the helm, Lisac
has led the women’s program to one
conference title, a CAA Championship finals appearance and two other
berths in the CAA Championship
semifinals. His overall record stands
at 44-31. The highlight of his tenure came in 2009, when he guided
Georgia State to the first NCAA
appearance in school history and was
named CAA Coach of the Year.

Last year, the Panthers achieved a
No. 55 ranking to finish the season to earn a spot at the national
indoor tournament in the spring.
The tournament takes the top 64
teams in the nation. GSU enjoyed
an outstanding season, advancing
to the CAA Championship finals
and earning a 15-4 overall record,
including an 8-2 mark on the road.
The Panthers earned the No. 3 seed
in the CAA Championships, opening with a 4-0 win over Delaware.
The team then upset No. 35 VCU,
4-2, in the semifinals. The Panthers
won the doubles point in the finals
against William & Mary, but fell 4-2.
Abigail Tere-Apisah was named CAA
Championship Most Outstanding

Martina Ondrackova in 2009.
In Lisac’s third season as head coach,
the team reached the semifinal round
of the CAA tournament for the third
straight year while producing two allCAA athletes in Diana Nakic (first
team singles, second team doubles),

in Georgia State history as the Panthers captured their first conference
title to reach the NCAA Championships for the first time ever. GSU
posted an 11-5 record and finished
the year with a national ranking of
No. 47.
For his efforts, Lisac was honored as
CAA Coach of the Year. Diana Nakic

Martina Nitkova (first team singles),

the season ranked No. 36 in the

juniors.
A 2005 graduate of Georgia State,
Lisac lettered four years for the

a four-time recipient of conference

of achievement in the classroom as
well as on the court. As a result, the
women’s tennis team has excelled in
the classroom, consistently posting
one of the top grade point averages
among all GSU teams.
Each of the last two seasons, the
women’s tennis program has posted
the highest GPA among all GSU
teams, including a 3.35 for the spring
of 2010 and a 3.56 in the spring of
