BAD BREATH CURES
JUST FOR YOU!
RULE #1: KEEP YOUR MOUTH CLEAN PLEASE
Mints, mouthwash, even gum...these can all mask that nasty breath
of yours, but they are not a cure. Brush, floss, and scrape that
tongue twice a day to keep bad breath far away. Most people don't
tongue scrape which is usually the cure for un-fresh breath.
RULE #2: PREVENT DRY MOUTH
Keep your saliva in balance by drinking plenty of fluids. If you are a
snorer, use saline nasal spray to keep your nose moist, and hence,
your mouth in gear. A dry mouth leads to a stinky mouth.
RULE #3: PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU INGEST
Garlic, tobacco, onions, coffee, you get the picture. All items contribute to trench breath and can be avoided. Some say that a couple
cups of tea a day can prevent bad breath due to polyphenols which
have been said to prevent bacteria growth. Munch on some parsley
as well if you want to get rid of a smell.
RULE #4: VISIT YOUR MD
If all of the above suggestions don't make a dent in your bad breath,
visit your doctor to see if he or she suspects a more serious issue
at hand. Diseases such as diabetes could be a reason for your bad
breath, so check yourself out.

MAKE THE CUT!
Michelle Obama has enough to deal with every day; but making
time to exercise and work out is always one of her top priorities. So
you thought that YOU didn't have the time to make it to the gym?
Well how about taking a little bit of advice from the U.S. President's
wife? Mrs. Obama told Village that she heads to the gym daily....
hold on to your hats...at 4:30 am daily in order to ensure she gets
her workout in! She exercises before her daughters are even out
of bed, this way nothing can stop her in her tracks. So what about
when she is globetrotting with Mr. President? She packs a jump
rope. Enough said.

OVER-DOING IT?
You are determined to be as fit as you can be...You are going to
make everyone squirm with envy...You can't think about anything
else but getting to the gym and getting on that treadmill...You are
obsessed...Could you be over-exercising?
The clues that could indicate you are overdoing it at the gym
are as follows:
• YOU NEVER TAKE A BREAK OR A DAY OFF: You go, go, go without giving your body a well deserved and much needed break. This
is a recipe for disaster.

much can be counterproductive, affecting your mood and working
against you.
Exercising and working out is an important part of life. Go for anywhere between 30-90 minutes to keep in shape. Set limits and take
breaks! You don't have to be at the gym all day long. Keep your
routine dynamic and interesting. Change things up every once in a
while to keep your brain and your body stimulated and efficient.

AN EXTRA 60 MINUTES
OF SLEEP FOR YOUR HEALTH?
A recent study claims that one extra hour of sleep at night can help
you to stay healthy. It can help you to avoid excess stress and avoid
coming down with a cold. Researchers looked at the sleep patterns
of a group of volunteers for a couple of weeks. These volunteers
were said to routinely get about 6-9 hours of zzz's per night. During
the study, they went down to 6.5 and 7.5 hours of sleep per night in
2 different groups. Blood tests were conducted on both groups to
analyze genetic function.
Researchers discovered that in the group that got 6 1/2 hours of
shut eye, genes associated with inflammation, stress, diabetes, immune response, and even cancer, were more active. In the group
that got the extra hour of sleep, those genes were less active. What
does that indicate? It means that just one extra hour of sleep might
have the power to give you a stronger immune system!
Getting deep sleep allows all of us to make more room in our short
term memory for the following day. On top of that, the stress related chemical noradrenalin shuts off during deep sleep. So basically, getting a good night's sleep is fantastic for you and your body
overall. Now go hit the sack!

Your eldest child is much wiser than the rest of the clan for a number of reasons... A recent study suggests that the first born children
in most families do better academically and are seen by others as
more victorious than the younger ones simply because they were
treated different by their parents from the very beginning.
V. Joseph Hotz and Juan Pantano, U.S. economists, propose that
the reason for this is due to the fact that parents tend to be more
involved, strict, and conscientious with their first borns compared
to the other children in the family. Rules are stricter, more time is
spent teaching them, and over all, they get more attention from
the go ahead.
"We provide robust empirical evidence that school performance of
children... declines with birth order as does the stringency of their
parents’ disciplinary restrictions," they explain.
33.8 per cent of moms polled in the study claimed that their firstborn was one of the best students in their class at school. This percentage dropped for each subsequent child born.
Another interesting note: other studies have found similar results...
But let it be told that younger siblings tend to be more sociable and
forgiving! You can't beat that!

YOUR DAILY

1. PASS ON THE GLUTEN: Research tells us that 60%+ of
people have a gluten sensitivity which can lead to poor digestion, bloating, skin issues, etc. Try to remove gluten from
your diet for a couple of weeks and see how you feel.
2. SAY GOOD-BYE TO THE WHITE STUFF: Get rid of the
nasty white items from your diet - white sugar, pasteurized
dairy, table salt, and white flour. You will boost your mind
and body in the process and get on the road to better health.
3. OPT FOR ORGANIC: If you can, go organic. Keep all those
toxic substances away from your body and live life to the
fullest.
4. ADD SNACKS TO YOUR DAY: Add protein to your snack
and with your next piece of fruit to stabilize blood sugar.
Some almonds and a small banana would make a great nibbly!
5. CONSIDER YOUR COFFEE: Why not buy organic coffee
to keep toxins at bay? Need a dash of creamer? Purchase a
non-dairy almond or even coconut based creamer. Your cup
of java will be healthy and amazing.

Debunked! Sure, we all forget things now
and then, but assuming we have to put
up with a declining memory is like throwing in the towel! We can all try to keep our
memories sharp by keeping physically and
mentally active right throughout out years.
Keep your noggin up to par with Sudoku,
crosswords, and learning new tasks.
3. YOU CAN'T EXERCISE AS MUCH AS
YOU USED TO:
Use it or lose it baby! There is no reason
why an active person cannot stay active
right throughout the years. Keeping up
your stamina and momentum is key and
the sky is the limit. Accepting some limitations according to doctor's orders is expected at times, however there are plenty
of seniors that are much more in shape
than the younger generation!

IWC Schaffhausen celebrated the grand opening of its new IWC
boutique at The Galleria in Abu Dhabi in October together with retired French footballer Zinédine Zidane, who kick-started IWC’s donation of 10 per cent of its sales at the IWC boutique in The Galleria
to the Abu Dhabi based charity Special Care Centre. After having
supported initiatives around the world, IWC now also underlines its
commitment to social responsibility in Abu Dhabi. The Special Care
Centre is a volunteer organization that provides education to children with intellectual and physical disabilities, and routinely relies
on volunteers and fundraisers to help the teachers involved with
the centre.

Salma is adamant about taking a detoxifying all natural fruit juice
drink to cleanse her body.
"Carrots and apples give you a super boost of Vitamin A and antioxidants," she told US Weekly.
Her recipe is as follows: she throws together 2-3 carrots, 1 apple, 1/2
of a small beet, and 1/4 lemon. She pushes the lemon through the
juicer (without the peel) along with the carrot, apple, and beet. Once
whipped up, she removes the surface foam and enjoys it over ice.
"After doing a juice cleanse, I'm motivated to eat healthier and not
emotionally. Cleansing is like my meditation. It makes me stop, focus, and think about what I'm putting into my body. I'm making a
commitment to my health and hitting the reset button."

You probably recognize Busy Philipps from the hit show 'Cougar
Town'. She's always a bundle of fun and has a great sense of humor.
This mother of two recently welcomed a newborn into the world:
Cricket Pearl. Now just a few months post-delivery, this celebrity is
determined to get her weight back down to what it used to be since
"creating a life and pushing it out" as she put it so bluntly. Busy
decided to put her body to the test and work it hard. Her favorite
activity to bust those pesky calories is to simply RUN .
"I'm a girl that likes to work out. Even when I hate it, I like it," she
told E! News at the 2013 Elle Women in Hollywood Gala.
Want a fun way of deciding how many miles to run after having a
baby? She says, "I'm trying to run a mile for every month my daughter is." Not a bad idea at all!
But what about all you breastfeeding moms out there? Can you hit
the pavement just like the rest of the mamas? Yes, and here are
some tips just for you!
1. Breastfeed or pump milk before you run: You will feel much more
comfortable doing so and this is necessary if you plan on an early
morning run.
2. Wear a very supportive bra: Why not consider wearing two bras?
Whatever it takes, protect those boobs of yours if you plan on jogging.
3. Stay well hydrated: Not only is hydration so important when you
are breastfeeding - it is even more important if you plan on running
and/or exercising. Drink, drink, drink!

YOUR VEGGIES...
IN THE MORNING!
IF YOU ARE FINDING IT DIFFICULT TO CRAM IN ALL THOSE VEGGIE
SERVINGS INTO YOUR DAY, WHY NOT GET SOME IN FIRST THING IN THE
MORNING? HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO DO SO:
• The biggest meal of the day should actually be your first meal! So
why not eat your dinner for breakfast? A great idea is to whip up an
egg omelet with plenty of healthy and colorful veggies. The eggs
will basically hold all the glorious goodness together.
• Go for some raw carrots on the side of your morning tartine. You
can dip them into low fat labneh if you desire!
• Ever considered some soup in the early hours of the morning?
Vegetable soup is a common morning meal in many parts of the
world. Throw in some barley to give it a cereal like feel.
• How about some sweet, delicious beets on top of your bowl of
oatmeal? Don't knock it till you try it!

IS HE A NARCISSIST?
Do you notice your man staring at himself in the mirror much more
than you do? Is he always talking about himself? Does he seem to be
over involved with his qualities, his appearance, and his overall lifestyle? Is it possible that you are in love with a full blown narcissist?
You might be in for some trouble...such men can be on a stressful
road and bring you along for the ride.
A recent study out of the University of Michigan suggests that such
men might end up stress balls. The researchers discovered that the
males who scored high on a psychological scale of narcissistic behavior had increased levels of cortisol in their system (the stress
hormone) and scored 3x higher than men who scored on the low
side. Study author Sara Konrath, Ph.D. said, “So we can infer that
narcissistic guys are under more constant stress than the average
person.”
These high levels of cortisol could lead to heart issues in addition to
other health problems...so beware of who you decide to snuggle up
with. You could be on the road with a narcissistic stress machine!

THAT SPINNING BIKE?

1. IT BURNS PLENTY OF CALORIES: Yes, it may be hard on the
legs at first, but once you get accustomed to it, the excess kilos will
begin to melt away. Before you know it, you'll be hooked. You can
burn as much as 500 calories in half an hour.
2. IT IS FANTASTIC FOR CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH: Spin-
ning helps to build up muscular endurance over time, but it also
serves as cardiovascular training. Going through the intervals,
speeding up, and breaking your pace, trains your body to the max.
In regards to your heart, it's all good.
3. YOU CAN FOLLOW YOUR OWN STRIDE: Whether you fol-
low an instructor at the gym or watch a DVD, the level of resistance
you opt for is up to you. You always have the option of working at
your own pace.
4. THE MINUTES FLY BY: Treadmills are so yesterday! On a spinning bike, the challenge to your body is always changing. It is easy
to lose track of time as you focus on the various intervals.
5. GOOD FOR THE KNEES AND FEET: Spinning is great since it
keeps the pressure off of knees and feet. Many prefer spinning to
walking on the treadmill or jumping on the elliptical machine.
6. SEXY LEGS IN THE MAKING:
In addition to your addictive
weight loss, your legs will start to look sexier than ever. Spinning

steps per day is essential to promote a
more active lifestyle. Easier said than done,
that’s for sure! Now is your chance to show
yourself that you CAN! Wear a pedometer
during the marathon and track your steps.
Why not buy a pedometer for your kids
too? They would love to compete with you
and win the bet!
HOLD OFF ON
THE RUNNING TILL
AFTER WARM UP!
Even if you are full of enthusiasm, hold it
for a few minutes to warm up your muscles, tendons, and joints for around 10 to
15 minutes. Walk for 3 minutes, then jog
for around 10 minutes to elevate your heart
rate; then perform some stretches. When
you start with the actual running, make
sure you have a slow pace at the beginning
so that you don’t lose momentum later on
when you need energy the most!
SHOP FOR THE RIGHT
MARATHON OUTFIT!
Shoes
• Failing to wear the right shoes can lead
to increased impact on your legs and joints,
resulting in injuries. For this reason, you
need to make sure to wear well-cushioned,
lightweight running shoes to the marathon.

• How to tell if you have the ones? If you
feel muscle fatigue or knee pain while running, or if you hold your shoes at both ends
and they twist without feeling firm, then
you probably need to do some serious
shopping. If you decide to get a new pair of
running shoes, make sure you wear them
prior to the marathon event.
Socks
Choose those made of polyester and
acrylic, not cotton, as they retain moisture
which results in wet and swollen feet.
Hat and Eyewear
• Choose a hat that provides some air circulation while running.
• Wear runner’s sunglasses. These are different from regular sunglasses as they have
ventilation holes, are light in weight, have
side glare cutters, and do not break if you
drop them while running.
Clothing
• Wear a shirt made up of Coolmax or Nylon.
• Stay away from cotton as it adds weight
by holding in sweat rather than letting it
evaporate.
• For women, wear a supportive sports
bra.
HYDRATE
INTELLIGENTLY
PRE-MARATHON!
Staying hydrated is key to optimal performance. Here are the guidelines:
• Two hours before the marathon race,
drink around 500mL (around 2 cups or 1
small bottle) of water.
• During the race, drink 150-350mL every
15-20 minutes. This is important, as even a
slight drop of body weight due to fluid loss
will result in a slower pace of running.
• Avoid caffeinated beverages (chocolate
drink, coffee, or tea) too, as they can increase fluid loss as urine.
• Keep hydrating yourself with water and/
or sports drinks all day long. The sports
drink needs to contain a moderate amount
of sodium, potassium, and carbohydrates
for energy.
FUEL WELL
PRE-MARATHON!
• Optimal nutrition needs to kick in 2-3 days
before the marathon. Load 70% of your
plate with carbohydrates, such as rice, pasta, bread, or potatoes... alongside protein
sources, such as chicken breast, lean meat,
or grilled fish. Beware of gas-producing
carbs, such as cabbage, beans, or broccoli.
• On the day of the marathon, have an early breakfast. Optimal choices include oat
bread with low fat labneh or cheese, whole
grain toast with honey spread, or skimmed
milk with a bowl of cereal.
• During the marathon, replenish your carbohydrate reserves by stocking on fresh
fruits, such as apples, peaches, grapes, bananas, oranges, or dried fruits, every 45-60
minutes.
SHOW UP TO WORK
THE NEXT DAY!
Having sore muscles or aching joints is no
excuse for skipping school or not showing
up to work the next day. Here are a few
tricks to manage this:
• Try stretching after the marathon is over.
• Reward yourself with a fruitful smoothie.
• Ice the sore areas to reduce inflammation, then apply heat to increase blood
flow.

RAG DOLL
Sit on a chair with your feet on the floor and your knees shoulderwidth apart. Slowly curl your neck, then your upper back, and then
your lower back forward until your chest is between your thighs.
Let your palms rest on the floor and hold for 10 seconds. Straighten
up by doing the same movement in reverse, lifting your head up
last. Repeat 3 times.
SIDE BEND
Stand up straight with your arms at your sides and your feet shoulder-width apart. Lower your right shoulder to the side, running your
hand down the outside of your thigh and bending your entire trunk
at the waist as far as you can without straining. Hold for 5 seconds
and slowly straighten up. Repeat 3 times on each side.

Lie on your belly and place your hands on the floor as if you will start
a push-up. Push your upper body off the floor as high as possible,
keeping your back and buttocks relaxed. Hold for a few seconds
and relax.
CAT STRETCH
Get down on all fours and keep your neck straight so that you are
staring at the floor. Slowly turn your face toward the ceiling while
allowing your lower back to sag comfortably into an arch. Next,
arch your back in the opposite direction, contracting your abs and
pushing your lower back toward the ceiling, while lowering the top
of your head toward the floor.
PELVIC BRIDGE
Lie on your back with your legs bent. Put your heels on the floor
and lift your butt up while squeezing your buttocks until forming a
line with your shoulders, hips, and knees. Hold and then relax and
repeat.
HIP TWIST
Lie on your back with your arms stretched out to your sides. Bring
your right knee up towards you. Keeping your shoulders fixed to
the floor, slowly rotate your knee to the left until it touches the
floor. Look back with your head. Relax for 5 seconds and then bring
your leg back to rest. Repeat with other leg.
HUG YOUR KNEES
Lie on your back and clasp your hands together behind one of your
knees. Keeping the opposite leg flat on the floor, pull your thigh
toward your chest. Hold for 15 seconds, then switch legs. You can
also do double knee to chest, grasping both your knees with your
hands, and pulling them toward your shoulders.
HAMSTRING STRETCH
Lie on your back with your legs out straight. Raise your right leg
up and put your hands around the upper leg for support. Slowly
straighten the raised knee until you feel a
stretch in the back of the upper leg; do NOT
bend your knees. Hold, then relax and repeat with other leg.
CRUNCHES
In order to work your abs, lie down on your
back with knees bent and hands behind
your neck; now tighten your abs and raise
yourself off the floor and then slowly back
down. Make sure your tailbone and lower
back are fixed on the floor.
CARDIO EXERCISE
Cardio can help you lose extra weight,
which might be putting excessive pressure
on your back, causing more pain. Walking
at a moderate pace may help reduce back
pain. Start slowly and then increase the
pace and intensity. Swimming is usually
prescribed by physicians to combat chronic pain because the water takes up your
weight and there will be less pressure on
the back.
Exercise Don'ts:
TOUCHING YOUR TOES
Standing toe touches may aggravate pain because it puts pressure
on the discs, may strain the ligaments of your spine, and can stretch
hamstrings far too much.
HIGH IMPACT ACTIVITIES
Running, jumping, step aerobics, basketball, and anything else
that puts stress on your joints can worsen back pain and should be
avoided.
LIFTING WEIGHTS
Lifting weights, especially overhead or on your shoulders, puts
stress on the spine and shouldn’t be done when you have back pain.
If you must lift weights, make sure they are light and be sure to use
correct form.
SIT UPS AND LEG LIFTS
Sit ups are popular to strengthen your stomach muscles; however, people tend to do them incorrectly and use the back and hip
muscles instead of working the abs, which is why it is preferable to
avoid them.
BICYCLE CRUNCHES
Also called curls with a twist, this exercise engages the abdomen
and oblique muscles, but comes with a high cost due to the excessive pressure it adds on the spinal discs.

t took the team of three under 58
days to make it across the Indian
Ocean. Imagine travelling for 6,500
kilometers aboard in an 8.8 meter
boat... setting a new world record
and making your country proud. Once
again, Maxime Chaya exhibits how when
the mind and the body are focused and determined, anything is possible. The sportsman, mountaineer, and explorer proves to
his fellow Lebanese that anyone, anywhere
can conquer their dreams if they truly set
their mind to it and are willing to take some
risks.
The Fit'n Style team had the opportunity to
talk to Maxime before he took off on his latest adventure. This time around, the adventure presented to be much more stressful
and challenging compared to the others (in
our eyes at least), not a venture that many
would be willing to take on. However, with
the strong support of eight sponsors, the
main one being NESCAFÉ, Maxime Chaya,
along with his two dedicated teammates
Dane Livar Nysted and Stewart Kershaw
from the UK, set a new world speed record
this summer. Expedition RIO proudly put
the team into the Guinness Book of World
Records. Yes, they are the first team of
three to row any ocean successfully.
Maxime took the stage at a recent celebration event in front of over 200 guests which
included ministers, Lebanese and foreign
dignitaries, and members of the press. Representatives from Nestlé Middle East, Abbott Laboratories, Dar al-Handasa, Demco
Steel, Fondation Saradar, Midis Group,
Rotana Hotel Management, and Sukleen
also attended the event held at the ATCL
in Kaslik. He proudly reminisced about the
challenging excursion and beamed with
pride as he thanked his loving family, as
well as his supportive girlfriend, former

I’m 55 years old and love outdoor activities. I’ve been running moderately on a regular basis for many years now. Recently, I’ve been
experiencing periodic joint discomfort in my knees and ankles, and
some mild pain in my lower back. I’m not certain that it is related to
my jogging activity; however, I tried brisk walking instead of running and it did seem to help. In fact, I felt that brisk walking was
gentler on my body.
PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR OPINION ON THE
FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
1. Would I burn the same amount of calories
by brisk walking compared jogging?
2. What is the difference between brisk
walking and jogging as far as health benefits are concerned?

Dear Perla,
When in doubt about any pain or physical discomfort, it is always a
good idea to check with your physician before continuing any training movement.
Regarding brisk walking and jogging, each activity has its own benefits and they are both good for you if you enjoy the outdoors. Running is clearly more intense than brisk walking, and it makes the
heart rate go faster, consequently giving you faster results. However, jogging does put more pressure on your joints (hips, knees,
ankles, and back). In your case, the physical discomfort and lower
back pain could be related to jogging. You may want to consider engaging in a milder activity on the joints and back. Also, in regards to
both walking and jogging, I would like to mention the importance
of your shoes; specific models can ease the impact of your body
weight on the ground, therefore reducing any discomfort that may
be related to your activity.

In terms of burning calories, you will burn the same calories per kilometer running or walking, but obviously, it will take you less time
to run one kilometer than to walk it. Walking uphill can be more
challenging and help you burn more calories than walking on a flat
track. If you want to burn even more calories, you can walk backwards. Walking backwards can burn additional calories – about an
additional one fifth of your total regular walk.
As far as the health benefits of walking vs. jogging, they are pretty
much the same. In fact, recent research published by the American Heart Association found that brisk walking lowers the risk of
high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes just as much as
running. Researchers compared 33,060 runners with 15,045 walkers over six years and found that while vigorous running required
slightly higher levels of energy than walking at a moderate intensity, both resulted in a similar drop in incidence of high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes or heart disease over the length of the
study.

INGREDIENTS FOR
SALAD DRESSING
• Yogurt, plain, low fat, 2 cups
• Vinegar, 2 tsp
• Lemon juice, 3 Tbsp
• Garlic cloves, minced, 6
• Pickled cucumbers, cut into very small
pieces (rinsed with water to remove excess
salt)
• Olive oil, extra-virgin, 12 Tbsp
• Thyme, dried, 3 tsp
• Basil, dried, 2 tsp
PREPARATION METHOD
• Boil the whole wheat pasta. Divide
smoked salmon into thick cubes.
• Meanwhile, cut feta cheese into small
pieces, peel and dice the pineapple and
mangoes, and dice the tomatoes and cucumbers.
• Drain the pasta and rinse with cold water.
• To prepare the dressing, mix low fat plain
yogurt, pickled cucumber pieces, lemon
juice, vinegar, minced garlic cloves, olive
oil, dried basil, and dried thyme. Dilute with
water if necessary.
• In a large bowl, add the pasta, rocca
leaves, spinach leaves, fresh thyme,
smoked salmon cubes, feta cheese pieces,
diced pineapples, diced mangoes, and pitted olives. Soak in dressing.

oday, as you read this article, two
people in the United States are diagnosed with diabetes every minute, thereby joining the 285 million people
who are already living with diabetes worldwide. This is quite an alarming prevalence!
What makes the matter even worse is that
around 180 million are unaware that they
have type 2 diabetes. The situation is not
any different in the Arab world that holds 6
out of the top 10 countries highest in diabetes prevalence. Could you be one of those
who have diabetes without even knowing?
Read about the warning signs below and

SMELL YOUR OWN
BREATH!
Believe it or not, your breath can give you a
hint on how well your body is able to make
good use of sugar. If it is not able, as is the
case with diabetes, your breath will smell
like nail polish remover; this is because
your body is burning fat to produce energy.
During this process, chemical compounds
known as ketones are released – the same
ingredients used in polish remover. If you
think that brushing your teeth would eliminate this odor, and the fruity taste that accompanies it, you are certainly mistaken.

How can you notice that if you’re wearing
nail polish all the time? Sores that do not
heal at the bottom of your feet, numbness
in feet, tingling, or a burning sensation can
indicate nerve damage caused by diabetes.
Make sure to seek immediate medical help
if you develop any of these symptoms.

OF OUR TIME?
his special group of older citizens
are called super-agers. These men
and women in their 80's and 90's
are exceptional individuals for a particular
reason: their memories and their brains appear to be far sharper and youthful than
most others their age. Researchers are examining this golden group of folks with the
aim to discover why their memories and
brains are so damn sharp. If we could figure out the magic formula...then we might
have one of the secrets to longevity and
hopefully win the fight against dementia
and Alzheimer's.
Amazingly enough, researchers have come
to realize that these super agers have
rather low degrees of age related plaques,
and have more brain mass (related to attention and memory) than most others at
their stage in life. While conducting the SuperAging study, this was visible on imaging
tests.
SuperAging Study leader Emily Rogalski,
a neuroscientist in Chicago at Northwestern University's cognitive neurology and
Alzheimer's disease center, stated to the
Associated Press: "We’re living long but
we’re not necessarily living well in our older
years and so we hope that the SuperAging
study can find factors that are modifiable
and that we’ll be able to use those to help
people live long and live well.”

Over 400 people were screened and a mere
35 of them were eligible for the super ager
study - insinuating that they represent a
small segment of the population. Some of
the super agers that did take part in the
study included a 92 year old Holocaust survivor, an 81 year old smoker (one pack per
day) who drinks a Martini every evening,
and an attorney in his eighties. Participants
promised to donate their brains to research
when they die.
WHAT ARE SOME OF
THE SPECIAL TRAITS
OF A SUPER AGER?
• Super agers can remember at least nine
out of fifteen words when asked 30 minutes later to recite them.
• Special MRI scans show that their brain's
cortex is thicker than the average senior in
this age bracket.
• The anterior cingulate found deep within
the brain, which affects attention, is larger
than individuals even in their 50s and 60s.
• They have a positive outlook on life and
have great energy.
• They keep their minds active with social
activities.
• Super agers tend to have a tangible purpose in their life. Many volunteer and help
others in need.
• They take the focus off of themselves and
their ailments, looking to aid those around
them.
• Many of these seniors are physically active; they never seem to stop learning and
asking questions.
Researchers think that for some, the aptitude to endure the effects of aging is simply
genetic; they also believe that for others, it
may come down to a combination of genes
and living a healthy lifestyle. Only time will
reveal what is the magical solution behind
the sharp memories of our golden friends....

by governments in other countries that also recognize schools as
vital for promoting healthy eating habits through education.”
More than 4,000 public and private school students in Lebanon
have so far benefited from the Program, launched in 2010 by AUB
and Nestlé with the support of the Lebanese Ministry of Education
and Higher Education.
It is now expanding into other Middle Eastern countries,
including the UAE where it was introduced in September 2012 as
a collaboration between the Dubai Health Authority, the Dubai
Education Zone, the Princess Haya Initiative for the Development of
Health, Physical Education & School Sports, and Nestlé Middle East.

A study covering 30 schools among the 110 exposed across Lebanon
concluded palpable differences in attitudes towards various dietary
habits among 957 students who completed Program sessions,
compared to 621 who didn’t, mainly finding that knowledge
increased almost three times and self-efficacy doubled.
Study results include other specifics such as 60% reductions in
children’s probability of consuming chips daily, 35% reduction in soft
drink consumption, and a 56% lower chance of consuming sweet
drinks. They also showed that students exposed to interventions
reported consuming fruits and vegetables twice per day, two times
more than students not exposed to the Program.
“Tackling growing childhood obesity rates must be a priority for all
parties concerned about public health in Lebanon and the region,”
said Dr. Nahla Hwalla, AUB’s Faculty of Agriculture & Food Sciences
Dean.
“International studies show that 30% of obese preschoolers, 40%
of obese school children, and 80% of obese teenagers become
obese adults,” she added. “Obesity rates in Lebanese children and
adolescents aged 6 to 19 has increased within twelve years - from
10.2% to 15.5% in boys, and from 5.4% to 6.9% in girls. This prevalence
(10.9%) is comparable to figures from Bahrain (11.3%) and Syria
(11.1%), higher than those observed in Qatar (6.3%), and lower than
those reported from UAE (13.7%).”
“Nestlé Healthy Kids Program – Ajyal Salima would not be the
success it is nor sustainable on the long-term without the support
of the various educational institutions, government, school and
other entities we are working with in Lebanon and the rest of the
region,” said Nestlé Healthy Kids Middle East Program Manager
Karine Antoniades Turk.
“It is particularly heartwarming to feel the zeal of the kids and
dedication of teachers who are passionate about the well-being of
children in their classrooms.”
The Program’s coordinator, celebrity-nutritionist Dr. Carla HabibMourad, shed light on its limitations, which mainly involve results
related to sedentary behavior changes such as watching television
and playing electronic games.
“Actual lifestyle changes did not yet shift significantly, likely due
to easier access to less nutritious snacks and foods within school
premises, poor attendance of parents
at school meetings, and generally low
availability of exercise facilities,” Habib
said. “We expect things to improve as the
Program expands and studies cover longer
intervention periods.”
Hwalla concluded with a look to the future,
saying: “Lebanon and the region should
promote and lobby for a multisectoral
approach to curb obesity in children
and adolescents, which include media
outreaches, physical activity curricula, food
policies, and shops in schools, parents’
education, as well as an environment which
is conducive to physical activity in order to
change the ‘obesogenic’ environment.”
THE NESTLÉ HEALTHY KIDS GLOBAL
PROGRAM AIMS TO RAISE NUTRITION,
HEALTH, AND WELLNESS AWARENESS
OF SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN AROUND
THE WORLD. IT IS A NESTLÉ CREATING
SHARED VALUE INITIATIVE TO PROMOTE
HEALTHY LIVING AMONG CHILDREN.
Launched globally in 2009, this program
runs in partnership with governments,
academia, and NGOs in over 64 countries
around the world reaching to date around
five million kids.
Part of the Global Program, the “Ajyal
Salima” curriculum was developed by the
American University of Beirut to answer
specifically to Middle Eastern community
issues and address nutritional habits and
requirements. It involves 12 educational
sessions per round, including interactive
learning and hands-on activities on nutrition,
healthy eating and physical activity; as
well as questionnaires developed to track
improvement of children from pre to post
interventions.

t is well known that our mood affects what we choose to consume.
However, what we still don’t really know is how the things we eat
or drink can influence our mental
health. One thing is sure though: changes
in our diets can create changes in our brain
structure, and thus, in our behavior.
Take a moment to think about the food you
usually eat or drink and the emotion it creates. To make it easier on you, we are going
to use some food imagery... Picture a plate
with a green salad and cherry tomatoes
topped with crunchy walnuts and a healthy
balsamic sauce. Next to it is some grilled
lean meat... done the way you like it... with
baked herbed potatoes or whole wheat
bread and a cool refreshing glass of water or yogurt. What is the emotion that is
triggered? Did the image of the suggested
plate put you in a peaceful state of mind?

Now... let us take another example and
think about caffeine, found in coffee, tea,
soft drinks, and various foods and drinks
containing products extracted from the
kola nut. People usually drink caffeine to
counter physical fatigue and increase alertness and wakefulness. The amount of caffeine needed to create these effects vary
from one person to another. Alongside the
stimulant effects, you also have the psychological impacts and associations, as you can
probably easily picture yourself meeting a
friend for a cup of tea and chatting, or waking up calmly in the morning and having
your cup of coffee. Let us not forget that
large amounts of caffeine may exacerbate
depression, fidgeting, insomnia, and gastrointestinal disturbances….
These two simple examples indicate the
existence of a two-way relationship between what we choose to eat and our
psychological state. Although we do not
have the whole story yet, and we still do
not know the exact cause-effect relationship between different types of foods and
moods, many people can find a connection
between what they eat and do not eat and
how they feel.
HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT THAT THERE MIGHT BE A CONNECTION BETWEEN YOUR FOOD AND YOUR MENTAL FUNCTIONING? THAT WHAT YOU EAT CAN ALTER THE WAY YOU
FEEL AND THE PERFORMANCE OF YOUR BRAIN IN GENERAL? WE ARE DEFINITELY NOT SAYING THAT YOU COULD
TREAT DEPRESSION WITH FOOD; HOWEVER, DIETS CAN BE
PART OF A SELF-HELP STRATEGY.
Specific foods also affect brain chemicals
and our eating habits impact blood sugar
levels, both of which play a role in our
mood. Basically, this is how it happens:
Serotonin is a monoamine neurotransmitter found in the brain that regulates mood,
appetite, and sleep. Serotonin levels are
affected by diet. An increase in tryptophan
(an amino acid) elevates serotonin levels.
Researchers suggest that this happens
when the diet is rich in carbohydrates and
low in protein. Thus, combining protein
with high-fiber carbohydrates would help
lessen mood swings. Improvement in mental health problems, such as mood swings,
concentration and memory difficulties, eating disorders, and insomnia, may also result
from dietary changes.

• Never skip breakfast. Having a wellbalanced breakfast (combining high-fiber
carbohydrates and some lean protein) every morning may improve your mood, lead
to feelings of relaxation, and boost your
memory.
• Consume foods that are rich in omega
3 fatty acid such as salmon, sardines, walnuts, magnesium, folic acids and B vitamins,
such as chocolate, sunflower seeds, and oranges… They are vital for the healthy functioning of the brain.
• Eat foods rich in selenium: oysters, crab,
nuts, turkey, whole grain pasta, oatmeal,
and lentils… It seems that low a selenium
intake might lead to a poor mood.
• Use caffeine moderately.
• Adopt a Mediterranean diet that includes
fruits, nuts, olive oil, vegetables, fish, cereals, and legumes. This type of diets is also
known as the happy diet!
• Avoid over restrictive diets that would
lead to depression, binge eating (resulting in guilt and low self-esteem), obsessive
dieting, and the vicious circle goes on. Instead, move to healthy eating patterns.
• Keep a food and mood diary, where you
would ideally write what you eat and when
you eat. This would help you understand
what types of foods trigger specific moods.
• Exercise daily, and most importantly, enjoy it!
You might be thinking that all this is easier
said than done. It will probably be smoother to manage if you start by gradually making changes in what you eat and drink.
However, making too many decisions at a
time could cause frustration and make you
go back to unhealthy eating habits. Bear in
mind that the first couple of days are the
most difficult ones; think about the long
run as you will be rewarded with the benefits such changes will have on your mental and physical health. In all cases, having
a well-balanced, healthy diet and simply
knowing that you are taking care of yourself can boost your mood and improve
your state of mind.

the potential to change the way we look.
Understanding food choices is not only related to the food itself, but also to its meaning. The choices people make by eating
some types of food instead of others are
related to the body’s size and shape. These
meanings are subject to social interpretation and are greatly affected by the media’s
representation.
I am sure you have noticed that men and
women are not represented in the same
way within the media. In fact, in comic
strips and on television, men appear more
frequently than women. When the latter
appear, they are usually seen in passive
roles (at home or as child care givers),
compared to men who are given a wide
range of “active” jobs such as bartenders,
businessmen, and engineers…. We cannot
deny that there has been an improvement
in this area, as we are more likely to see
women in prestigious positions; but when
they are placed in such circumstances, they
are beautiful, brilliant, and attractive. In
newspapers and magazines, females are
pictured less than males, and when they
are, the focus is mainly on their sexy bodies. Yes, they are always appealing. Have
you ever noticed how almost all commercial media aimed at women is related to
fashion, diet, and beauty? Even on the
cover pages of male magazines, a woman
showing less of her face and more of her
body is usually featured.

Analyses of recent media images indicate

that the current preference is for the thin
female body, whereas back in the Middle
Ages, rounded body shapes were considered attractive. It is well known that some
female celebrities use starvation diets and
exercise to reach their “ideal” body shape;
"ideal" in their understanding of a beautiful body size (as many of you), despite this
“flat-chested bodyish appearance” (Orbacj, 1986). In the 1950s, Marilyn Monroe
was known for her curves and big breasts.
However, for the past 40-50 years, female
movie actresses, advertisers, and models
have become younger and thinner. In fact,
Freedeman (1986) noticed that even Barbie
has become thinner since she was introduced in 1959!

AND SHAPE
Changes in men’s body image representations have also been noticed since the
1980s. Male models have become hairless,
muscular, and narrow hipped in an attempt
to look like Ken, Barbie’s boyfriend. We can
frequently see that the male body is being
used in advertising in an erotic and appealing way, as a mean to get customers to buy
whatever product is being marketed.
CONCEPTUALIZATION OF
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES
Men and women are being represented
differently by the media. Many of you believe that you are immune to the effect of
mass media; however, if you think about
the number of ads you see every day, you
realize you are mistaken. Female and male
bodies are being presented and portrayed
in an attractive and stereotypical way that
would make each one of us, consciously
and unconsciously, think that this is how we
should look. Furthermore, larger sizes trigger associations with negative attributes –
laziness, passivity – as obesity is seen as a
self-inflicted state and a lack of will power.
Thinness is therefore highly linked with attractiveness, freedom, and success. In magazines, you'll find many products and articles that will help you fix, or at least mask,
parts of the body that you do not like. After
all, the media objectifies us all and thus gets
us to objectify ourselves and feel humiliated. In this context, you would understand
the importance of a positive body image.
How can you get there? Here are few tips
that can help you boost your self-esteem:
• Bear in mind that what matters the most
is not your size and shape, but rather your
health.
• Your weight is just your weight. It does
not define who you really are and it certainly does not reflect your assets and accomplishments.
• Stop criticizing yourself and let go of perfectionism. Instead, focus on the positive
aspects of your life.
• Do some research about weight issues
and avoid stereotypes.
• Plan your meals ahead of time to avoid
being preoccupied with thoughts of food
and diet.
• Finally, and mostly, keep in mind that
there is no ideal image or shape every
woman and man needs to conform to.
Just because society has an obsession
with women being thin and men well-built
doesn’t mean that this is how we should
look.
• Barbie and Ken are just myths! Never forget this.

screens. New sizes and formats will arise, e.g. transaction-only
booths, self-service kiosks, cashless advisory lounges, tutorials for

SUNDAY. I DECIDED TO GO ON AN ATV
EXCURSION WITH MY FRIENDS FROM
FARAYA... ALL THE WAY TO ARZ. BEFORE
REACHING OUR DESTINATION, I FELL
OFF THE FOUR-WHEELER ONTO MY
SHOULDER AND WAS TAKEN TO THE
HOSPITAL IMMEDIATELY, AS MY INJURY
WAS VERY SERIOUS.
n hindsight, I obviously wasn't well-equipped or wellprepared in order to avoid such an accident. In the United
States, one must take lessons and training in order to be
able to ride this type of vehicle. In Lebanon, however, there
isn't the comprehensive awareness about the dos and the
don’ts of ATV riding. After going through such an experience, I
decided I wanted to shed some light on this area and highlight on
the safety measures that should be taken in order to be safe “offroad.”
In reality, for any outdoor activity, having the right apparel and
equipment definitely adds to the experience. Skiers usually put on
clothing designed for protection, for flexibility of movement, for
protection from elements, and of course, for style too. Each type
of activity has its own special requisites, and that includes an ATV
expedition.
GOLDEN RULES FOR ATV RIDERS
Follow these guidelines that are set by America’s ATV Safety
Institute:
• All-Terrain Vehicles are particularly designed to be operated offhighway. Ride only on designated trails at a safe speed.
• You should wear proper protective gear including an approved

helmet, eye protection or goggles, a long-sleeved shirt, long pants,
gloves, and over-the-ankle boots.
• Inspect your quad before you start. Talk to the guide for further
assistance.
• Ask for maps in order to track the roads and/or not to get lost.
• You must not mix alcohol with the 4-wheeler riding.
• You should NOT carry passengers on a single-rider and no more
than one passenger on an ATV specifically designed for two riders.
• Choose one that is appropriate for your age. Never let kids ride
unsupervised!
• Age 6 & older: Under 70cc
• Age 12 & older: 70cc or 90cc
• Age 16 & older: Over 90cc
• Some models approved for 18 and older only
LET’S GET READY!
When you’re up on a ride, always keep both hands on the handlebars
and both feet on the footrests of the vehicle. Removing even one
hand or foot can cause imbalance and reduce your ability to control
the vehicle which can result in serious injuries.
America’s ATV Safety Institute states that usually “you must shift
your body weight to enhance the performance capabilities of the
ATV. This is especially true in maneuvers such as turning, negotiating
hills, and crossing obstacles. When riding a two-up vehicle with a
passenger, weight shift should mirror operator weight shift.”
Dear reader… you are now aware of the necessary and imperative
All-Terrain Vehicles riding rules and guidelines. With practice and
preparation, you will be safe and sound, plus, you will be able to
develop and expand your riding skills.
Just keep in mind that if you are not a confident rider and are
inexperienced, don’t take any risks by taking long rides. Just start
small… read manuals and guidelines… and try to improve your
riding skills bit by bit until you’re ready to go from Faraya to Arz
off-road style!

ARE SIMPLE; MAN HAS
MADE HIMSELF COMPLEX
YET YEARNS TO UNDERSTAND THE TRUTH BEHIND
THAT COMPLEXITY.
n past times, spirituality was connected to mystical traditions, to
religion, to the sacred, and sometimes, to certain practices….
Over time, however, the meaning of spirituality has
changed, becoming less about religion, and more about discovering the vital dimension in us, the natural element or substance
that sustains us with life through breathing, inhabiting the center of our physical bodies on equal distance from the mind and
the instinct.
The spiritual part in us is the Perfect-Balanced dimension; it is
not limited to the physical dimensions of space or time, but it
exists eternally. Every thought or action we take – even unconscious activities like the heartbeat or breathing – cannot take
place without the presence of the spirit or soul in us. Although
the connection between the spiritual and the physical planes is
what’s missing in the world today, I consider that the relationship of spirituality to science has developed in many ways, and I
believe that they are wholly complimentary, not contradictory.
We live in one perfect harmonious universe, and all that exists
in it are substances or elements. Logic says some materials are
tangible to the five senses, while others are subtle and intangible, but not less important, like the mind, the spirit, or the soul.
In fact, the more the element is ethereal, the more it seems
eternal and influential over physical substances in the universe.
The spiritual plane or dimension may seem invisible to us – to
our sight – perhaps because our consciousness is too dense to

see it. Yet, we can feel it sometimes, can’t
we? I mean, don’t we wonder sometimes
where certain ideas or inspirations come
from? Don’t we feel that some invisible inspirational force is actually guiding us? Of
course there’s no physical proof till now,
but we feel it and we believe it, at least
some of us do. And although some of our
scientists suspect and acknowledge that
this divine energy is there, holding the Universe together in perfect harmony, they
admit that they can’t measure it - till now
- because it’s not molecular.
In the last hundred years, mankind has
progressed further, particularly in the area
of technology, bursting with new discoveries. The energy packed with this period
of incredible scientific growth and discoveries on all fronts has made us adrenaline
induced on a massive scale. Crisis has confronted us in every aspect of our lives;
there has been strangeness between our
developed outer-selves and our under-developed inner-selves,
as if we have been flying with one wing. The more intense living
has become, the more people need to control those energies,
turning inward, seeking a wholeness that has been lost in the
maelstrom of force vibrating through their lives.
The turning to a source for inner strength was inevitable, as if
humanity was catching up with itself; it has been an acceleration of spiritual discovery beginning to match the energy of discovery in other areas. More spiritual understanding seemed to
be an essential component if we are not to become disoriented
by the other energies we have been releasing. We needed that
centered calm, the inward certainty that relaxes and concentrates our vitality, so we can direct our own strengths, and not
to have them react with an adrenal response to outside stimuli.
As humanity intuitively and inevitably tends to regulate itself,
the world has become a self-regulating system looking inward
to re-charge us… to bring about balance, harmony, and moderation in our lives and maintain a great sense of calm and peace
in our hearts. Acknowledging the divine in us is essential for
growing wholly and not partially. It is being aware of what we
are and what we are capable of becoming. It is simply getting
along tunefully with the natural sciences. In essence, highly advanced science and spiritual understanding are the same thing,
and they lead to the same truths

infection, cervical cancer, sexually transmitted diseases, diabetes, or thinning and drying of vaginal walls. How would you know
about all these underlying conditions if you

On the other hand, leaking urine or pain
when urinating is often ignored, although
again these are alarming signs. Leaking
urine can be caused by either weak, lower
urinary tract muscles or damage in nerves
that control urination and can be signaling emotional stress, Parkinson disease,
or stroke. Likewise, pain when urinating
can reveal sexually transmitted disease,
bladder stones, vaginal infection, kidney
stones, or vaginal yeast infection – all of
which are worth further investigation by
your gynecologist.

Attachment theory involves how a child

Children with secure attachments are

responsive, and helpful. They have nurturing connections with their parents and feel
safe in the world. These children grow up
to being confident adults with a degree of
self-esteem that is not dependent on their
lover’s reinforcement. They express feelings easily, give and receive love freely,
have realistic expectations from a partner,
and set clear boundaries, which is why
they tend to have more successful relationships.
ANXIOUS ATTACHMENT
Children with anxious attachments are uncertain if a parent will be available - and this
is why they face separation anxiety. People
who experienced anxious attachments as a
child are dependent on their partner; they
are needy and constantly ask for reassurance. They can also be easily prone to feelings of jealousy, crave intimacy, and may
find it very hard to deal with break ups.
AVOIDANTATTACHMENT
Children with avoidant attachments have
no confidence if parents care or will respond to their needs, and so they 'expect'
rejection. They don’t cry when their parents
leave and they don’t react if parents return.
These children grow up to be partners that

Mama Talk. In their own defense, the feminists who overtly abhor
the degrading outcomes of the patriarchal matrix – sexism, international marriage agencies, and sex tourists – are proclaiming not
to back down until they abolish capitalism, dictatorship, the sexual
abuse of women, and the monopolization of their intellect along
with job opportunities. Social media users, furthermore, have started a war against the misguided censorship that removes beautiful
content and publishes pornographic images of sexualized young
girls, hence objectifying the female body and discouraging any positive and educational approach.

Follow pose with a quick child pose or back stretch.

Have a seat toward the end of the Bosu.
Find your comfortable angle and lengthen
your body over the Bosu while exposing
your left ribcage up toward the ceiling.
Bend your supporting leg for balance
while bending both hands behind the base
of your neck. Engage the obliques and
lift up while reaching your left hand and
foot toward a low diagonal; hold for 10-30
seconds. Advanced: Simultaneously lower
torso and leg and lift back up to start position. Repeat 10-20 times per side.
Remember to always honor your body while you exercise. Feelings
of discomfort or pain during the workout is a sign that something is
wrong or that the pose is not for you. Ask a trainer or doctor when
in doubt. Training your abdominals and back together will improve
overall body strength, improve posture, create a nice waistline, decrease back aches, and protect vital organs. In order to get a nice
abdominal waistline, you should eat healthy, learn how to breathe
while exercising, and do some cardio. This pre-holiday workout can
be done on a daily basis while adding advanced variations as explained above during your exercise regimen.

HOW HAS ART GIVEN VALUE TO FASHION?
It all began during the Renaissance, when painters first sought to
accurately capture the form, color, and texture of clothing. And it
continues till this very day, with models strutting down the runway
in virtual works of art from clothing to accessory wear, thus art
giving value to fashion. A very actual example is Dolce & Gabbana’s
Fall/Winter 2014 Mosaic Women Collection which is inspired by
an ancient religious era. Art has lead the way for today’s brand
and fashion designers, fashion houses, and a treasury of creative
inspiration for workers in studios and ateliers. Without us even
knowing it, art has been giving value to fashion since the very
beginning.
WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE USUALLY APPRECIATE ART?
RT has always been expressive, valuable, and
different. Any form of art, including painting, poetry,
photography, performing arts, and design, is valued
and appreciated in society. Many people live with
art, and Sandra Younes is one of them. She is a
multi-talented artist: an art director, a painter, and a designer. She
holds a degree in Visual Communication from Duquesne University,
Pittsburgh, USA, BA in Advertising & Marketing, and MA in Media
Studies from Notre Dame University, Lebanon. Fit ‘n Style Magazine
sat down with Sandra to talk about art, fashion, and creativity.
WHAT DO ART AND FASHION HAVE IN COMMON?
Art and fashion are both the expression of human creative
imagination, while producing works of beauty and emotional
power expressed through painting, sculpture, textile, or any other
natural material from earth in order to be used by people with an
artistic and sensitive personality. If we want to understand the
close relationship between art and fashion, we have to look back
at ancient societies. In Egypt, Greece, and Rome... sculptures and
paintings reflected what people used to wear, thus showing us
their lifestyle and civilizations.

People who appreciate art tend to have a sensitive personality and
are imaginative-minded. People who enjoy art, try to produce art,
and collect art, usually want to captivate a unique and mysterious
allure; and there are those whose senses are awakened and
triggered whenever they encounter any artistic presentation – be it
in painting, fashion, or accessories.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR LIFE JOURNEY AS A MULTITALENTED ARTIST?
Wow… now that’s an exciting journey. It all began with my love
for painting since I was a child, where I would sit next to my mom
who is also an artist; together, we used to paint, sculpt, and draw
shapes and forms that would usually turn into an artistic piece.
Throughout my school years, I waited impatiently for art courses;
I was painting whenever I had the chance to. My artistic peek was
during my college years when I immersed myself in History of Art
and History of Costume courses; that put me on the right track the track that made me knowledgeable about art from prehistoric
times until today. Following that period, during my university
years, I began exhibiting my artwork throughout various local and
international exhibitions; I also won the first prize for designing the
Swatch skeleton watch in Lebanon, which led me to the opening
of my own art workshop. However, my artistic curiosity made me
want to experience a different kind of art: the art of using natural
materials originating from the earth. So I began working with pearls
and amethyst stones, as well as precious
stones. I was amazed by their earthly
natural creation; pearls are created in shells
in the middle of the ocean and precious
amethyst stones are formulated and
created on their own through stalactites in
caves, specifically in Brazil. And the journey
continues….
YOU ALSO HAVE ART DIRECTION
SKILLS. DID SUCH SKILLS ACTUALLY ADD TO YOUR ART AND TALENT?
My art direction skills allowed me to
communicate my talent. This is due
to my field of specialization in graphic
design, advertising, and art direction,
which enhanced and supported my art
and talent. Art direction requires a lot
of brainstorming, creative & strategic
thinking, and finding the ‘big idea,’ which is
a strong asset while using color, symbols,
and ideas to communicate a message.
TO WHAT EXTENT DO YOU PRACTICE CREATIVITY IN BOTH FIELDS?
Actually, I prefer to put it in different words:
creativity is more than a ‘practice’ I use and
teach, it is part of my everyday life.

glamorous luxury brands? Dana Thomas, New York
Times Best Selling Author and Award-winning
Journalist, has uncovered their dark secrets in her
book “Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster.” Fit’n Style Magazine
had the privilege to interview Dana about her book and her journey
as a fashion/culture journalist.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR LIFE JOURNEY AS A FASHION
AND CULTURE JOURNALIST?
I began my career as a news aide at the Washington Post National
desk while still a journalism student at American University. I then
moved to the Style section, where I answered phones, sorted
mail, and hustled up freelance stories as I could. I soon became
the assistant to the fashion editor, Nina Hyde, and after that,
to the classical music critic Joseph McLellan. When Nina Hyde
passed away from breast cancer, I filled in covering fashion until
a full-time editor could be hired. I also wrote a weekly performing
arts column and covered parties and events. I moved to Paris
and got married to my French husband in 1992, and I continued
to write for the Washington Post from there. In 1995, I joined the
Paris bureau of Newsweek and eventually became the European
Arts & Entertainment correspondent as well as the European
fashion writer. I left Newsweek two years ago, wrote for about 18
months for WSJ, the Wall Street Journal’s style magazine, and last
December I joined T, the New York Times Style magazine. Along the
way, I freelanced for other publications, including The New Yorker,
Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Architectural Digest, and the New York
Times. And in 2007, Penguin Press published my first book “Deluxe:
How Luxury Lost Its Luster,” which went on to become a New York
Times bestseller.

WHY ARE PEOPLE SO OBSESSED WITH LUXURY BRANDS
NOWADAYS? WHAT HAS CHANGED?
I have never understood it. That’s why I wrote the book - to show
people that you aren't always getting what you are paying for and
that it's just stuff.
DOES THE RISE OF ECO-FASHION BRANDS CHANGE THE
THINKING AND THE DIRECTION OF CURRENT LUXURY
BRANDS?
I surely hope so since consumers around the world are becoming
more aware and questioning about brands.
YOU ARE ALSO A BLOGGER AND SOCIAL MEDIA ACTIVE.
HOW DOES SOCIAL MEDIA AFFECT THE FASHION WORLD?
I know that some brands take advantage of it to reach more
customers – though in general, luxury brands are still a bit afraid
of the Internet, as if it will take some of the well-applied gloss
off their image somehow - and some blast pictures of stars in
their clothes on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Many luxury
CEOs and designers, at least in Europe, don’t even email people –
they read printouts and dictate answers. (John Galliano recently
admitted that he so lived in a bubble at Dior that he didn’t know
how to use an ATM!) Really, though luxury fashion brands tout that
they are selling what’s next, they are way behind tech-wise; wholly
“unmodern.”

Biologically, sound and/or music communicates information about
our environment such as: potential mates, competitors, danger,
messages, or even threats. A recent research study showed that
people who shared the same musical taste were more likely to be
friends. Music has the ability to bring the human species together
or apart. Recent research has shown that music also reflects your
personality.

The SUV’s array of airbags provides

EcoSport offers airbags for the driver and
front passenger, as well as side airbags
and curtain airbags.
To take the stress out of driving, the Ford
EcoSport comes with an array of driver-assist systems. Hill Launch Assist, which is offered in the petrol automatic variant helps
drivers make a perfect hill start whether
it’s uphill or downhill, by holding the SUV
for up to three seconds. This prevents the
vehicle from rolling backwards or forwards
while moving off from the slope, increasing
driver confidence.
Advanced safety technologies such as
Electronic Stability Program (ESP), which
is available on models with the automatic
transmission, also help customers remain
in control of the Ford EcoSport at all times,
especially on slippery roads. When it detects that the car is losing control, it automatically reduces engine power and selectively brakes individual wheels to stabilise
the vehicle and keep it travelling on track.
The Ford EcoSport’s ESP system includes
the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) which
prevents the wheels from locking up and
helps the vehicle to stop quickly on slippery
road surfaces.

LET'S TALK SALT AND PEPPER...
Remember the days when you didn't have
such an array of choices when it came to
buying your salt and pepper? Nowadays,
you have plenty of options, especially for
the gourmet cooks at heart. Let's discover
the choices of today:
• Table Salt: The classic choice of all, table
salt is usually fortified with the mineral potassium iodide. The fine texture makes it
ideal for a dash when baking.
• Kosher Salt: This is a coarse version of
table salt without the added elements. The
coarse crystals are great for seasoning your
cooked dishes.
• Sea Salt: Attained from the good old sea,
sea salt is full of flavor. You can find varieties such as fine, coarse, and fortified. Adds
fantastic flavor to your meals.
• Fleur de Sel: Gathered from the surfaces
of salt ponds, these are on the pricey side!
They are often used as the delicate final
touch to fish and veggies.
• Black Peppercorns: Grind these skin-on
peppercorns for a glorious, strong flavor
for your dishes.
• White Peppercorns: These skinless peppercorns have a milder flavor than their
dark friends. Grind into dishes such as
mashed potatoes.
UGH! Those itsy bitsy fruit flies!
Those pesky little flies that soar around your fruits in the kitchen
can be ever so irritating. And it seems that no matter what you do,
they manage to hang around for the long haul. Did you know that
fruit flies can actually lay up to 500 eggs at a time right next to your
precious fruits and veggies? First things first: take action! Try as
much as possible not to leave ripe fruits and vegetables exposed
out in the open; when feasible, keep items in the fridge. Keeping
your garbage can clean and free of juices and spills will also aid you
in keeping those pesky critters away. And finally, keep your kitchen
clean by washing up dirty dishes asap.

RAW CHICKEN....
We know you love to wash that raw chicken of yours...however, the
latest news is to 'refrain' from doing so! It turns out that rinsing raw
chicken is a huge no-no. Since chicken companies are pretty good
at cleaning their chicken before packaging, it is safe to say that
any germs will be destroyed in the cooking process - as long as it is
cooked thoroughly. You see, as you rinse your chicken in the sink,
all the items in the area - including the sink and any cloths or utensils you have nearby - become easily contaminated. Your best bet
is to dry your chicken with paper towels while it is still resting in its
package. This way, there are no other items touching the chicken in
the process. And of course...do not forget to wash your hands thoroughly after handling chicken - wearing gloves is even a better idea!

CHICK PEAS, FAVA BEANS, TAHINI, AND VEGETABLES. LET’S BE INNOVATIVE
AND GIVE TRADITIONAL FALAFEL A NUTRITIOUS BOOST AS WE ADD
FLAXSEEDS, QUINOA, AND PISTACHIO NUTS... AND WRAP ALL INGREDIENTS IN
MOUTHWATERING LETTUCE OR CABBAGE LEAVES.

THE INGREDIENTS TO PREPARE
FALAFEL SANDWICHES FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 PEOPLE ARE AS FOLLOWS:
• Chickpeas, 1 cup
• Fava beans, ½ cup
• Pistachio nuts, 200g
• Quinoa, cooked, 1 cup
• Flaxseeds, ½ cup
• Sodium bicarbonate, 1 tsp
• Onion, finely chopped, 1
• Garlic, minced, 3
• Cumin, 2 tsp
• Dried coriander, 2 tsp
• Baking powder, ½ tsp
• Salt, ½ tsp
• Pepper, ½ tsp
• Flour, 4 Tbsp
• Olive oil, 2 Tbsp
• Lettuce or cabbage leaves, large
• Mixed vegetable salad (parsley, mint,
pickles, tomatoes, radishes, pickled turnips, rocca, broccoli)
• Dressing (tahini, water, lemon juice, salt)

• Soak chickpeas and fava beans in a bowl
with 5 cups of water and 1 tsp sodium bicarbonate overnight. Drain and then wash
again with water for around 30 minutes.
• Place flaxseeds in a blender and process
until ground. Set aside.
• In a blender, process the chickpeas,
cooked quinoa, flaxseeds, pistachio nuts,
and fava beans, making sure they are still a
bit coarse after blending.
• Add onions, garlic, cumin, dried coriander, salt, pepper, flour, and baking powder.
Add water if necessary. Blend until the mixture is uniform.
• Form into balls and then flatten into patties.
• Bake in the oven after putting some olive
oil onto a cooking tray and lining the patties.
• Once baked, put a few falafel patties inside lettuce or cabbage leaf along with the
vegetable salad and dressing. Next, fold
the bottom of the lettuce/cabbage leaf
up and its top down, the same way you do
with any regular sandwich.

First, we’ve added new ingredients such as pistachio nuts, quinoa,

Wilson.’ And these great men will be looking down at their sons and
daughters, brothers and sisters, and they will mourn them, because
they have lost their way and the trap is closing in as they sleep unruffled. So, beside the sight of a glorious sunrise or the might of a
heartfelt prayer, these poor new souls will be missing the precious
knowledge of a never-ending truth. Life is change and change is
progress, and what have been stored in forgotten files will resurface
to shake their entire being. The challenge this time will be to find the
right balance between what is soothingly holy and what is unsettlingly worldly. Let’s hope that on a serendipitous day, the descendants will succeed where their ancestors failed and live a full life.
