LETTER from the
DIRECTOR
Friends of Teton Valley Ranch Camp,
At TVRC, we are constantly thinking of those who came before us. We are fortunate to
have such a rich history with so many loyal alumni, past staff members, and directors.
And we will never run out of classic camp stories about trips, rodeos, and ceremonies.
True to the TVRC experience, the challenge of enduring over generations has only made
our community stronger.
As we approach our 75th Anniversary this summer, I can’t help but compare and contrast the early days of TVRC with today. I think back to the
stories I have heard of Weenie and Mary Ellen Wilson enrolling campers who applied by mail and logging their enrollment on yellow steno pads;
while this year we began enrolling campers online. Back then, counselors and staff would meet the campers at train stations in Chicago and New
York, and the rules and culture of TVRC would be learned during the 3-day train ride. These days our summer staff comes to the ranch much earlier
than our campers, and we build and coach our team over a two week period. Off-season updates like the Wrangler Newsletter were mailed out once
or twice a year; now our off-season updates can be found daily on our Facebook page!
Still, while so much has changed in the world, TVRC continues to do what it does best: inspire future generations of leaders. This is what the
Wilsons set out to do in 1939, and this is what we continue to do today at the ranch. People often say that a summer at TVRC is timeless. From my
observation, this truth does not imply that we have ignored the changes of time but rather speaks to the focus that camp has maintained on our
mission to positively impact the lives of each and every camper that has walked through our ranch gates.
One of the most powerful elements of this timeless TVRC experience is when our campers and staff leave to share the spirit of TVRC with the rest
of the world. In that way, I believe that we are making our world a better place, slowly but surely. And it is with that in mind, that I sign my last
annual report letter. The time has come for me, Catherine, and our daughters to leave TVRC and take the lessons of camp to the rest of the world
to make it a better place. For the past fifteen years, TVRC has been my home. It has guided my heart and my mind; it has fostered my growth and
encouraged me always to have the strength to lead and the faith to follow. That is why we love Teton Valley Ranch Camp, and I look forward to
watching the spirit of camp endure for years to come. Thank you to the countless people who have made my experience at TVRC so powerful.
Thank you for helping to make this past year a great one, and I look forward to celebrating
the timeless and enduring legacy of TVRC with you this summer at the 75th Anniversary Celebration.

Friday, July 12: Ranch Day– Reconnect with
TVRC and all that the Dubois ranch has to offer.
Choose your own adventure at the fence meeting,
enjoy a barbeque dinner on the green, and sing Teton Serenade, Peace of the
River, and other camp classics at our campfire of the ages. Cabins and
tent sites can be reserved if you choose to spend the night at the ranch.
Saturday, July 13: Anniversary Celebration– Enjoy dinner and
dancing with TVRC alumni, families, and friends at the Snake River
Ranch in Jackson. This evening is a fundraiser for the TVRC Education
Foundation. We will have live and silent auctions and items will include:
Experiences: such as a tour and meal at the Niner Wine Estates
in Paso Robles, CA • a fishing trip with Will Dornan and Snake
River Angler • Café Genevieve catered dinner at the old Kelly ranch
75 years ago the first Rough Riders
were saddling their horses and arriving back at camp covered in mud.
Campers were taking their horses into the Gros Ventre Mountains
not long after the Gros Ventre slide occurred and hiking the trails in
Grand Teton National Park which was a fraction of its current size.
Days full of adventure were ending with songs around the campfire,
as they still are 75 years later. We hope you can join us for our
three-day celebration of the history, legacy, and future of Teton Valley

Matt Karres was a staff member at Teton Valley Ranch Camp
from 1984-1987. Matt discovered TVRC at the age of 17 and it has
remained a significant part of his life, providing a foundation for
teamwork and leadership that has served him well ever since. He is
an active duty Colonel in the US Army and has served for 23 years.
Matt has spent his career deployed around the world including
service in Desert Storm, multiple deployments to Afghanistan
and Iraq, and he has also served in the Balkans and Africa.
He is a graduate of The Citadel (BA, 1990),
the US Naval Postgraduate School (MS, 2000),
and the US Naval War College (MA, 2011).
Matt lives in Pinehurst, NC with his wife
Courtney, his sons Gus, Garrett, and Brodie,
and their two dogs, Jackson and Moose.
His son Gus will be a Trailblazer this summer
at TVRC.

The TVRC Education Foundation Board is pleased to announce Carly Platt
is returning to TVRC as the new Executive Director, effective September 2, 2013.
With four summers of experience as a counselor and five years on the year round staff, Carly
brings incredible knowledge of the mission and operations of TVRC to her new position. She will
be at the ranch this summer to begin the transition. Please join the TVRC-EF Board and staff in

Dear Friends of Teton Valley Ranch Camp,
This summer we celebrate the 75th anniversary of camp .
And what better way to pay tribute to our history than to celebrate over
several days at the ranch in Dubois and with a party in Jackson?
Up at the ranch in Dubois, on July 12, we will begin the afternoon the
same way you and so many of our siblings, parents, children, grandchildren, aunts, and uncles did throughout the years: with a fence meeting.
There, we will choose our activities for the day. You guessed it: riflery,
archery, lapidary, arts and crafts, roping, or perhaps a hike or short ride,
exactly like we’ve done for decades. The evening will conclude with
dinner and campfire, and yes, of course, we will finish the night with
“Serenade” and “Peace”.
The next day, July 13, we will host one of the largest parties the town of
Jackson has ever seen, at the Snake River Ranch with its magnificent
view of the Tetons. There will be time to connect with old friends,
counselors, and trip leaders, dance, dine, bid, and take in the scenery.
While the world around us is in constant motion, time at camp seems
to stand still. The traditions and values are the same, the friendships
made are just as fast, teamwork just as strong, the air just as clear, and
the trail rides and mountain summits just as exhilarating.
For 75 years, our
beliefs at TVRC
have been, and
continue to be, to teach children the values of the American West:
integrity, responsibility, hard work, and a reverence for the natural
eco-system. Our mission is evergreen, resonating with our camp
families today more than ever.
Being a camper and counselor at TVRC has shaped who I am more
than just about any other thing I’ve done. Throughout my life I am
forever grateful to have been introduced to TVRC, and it is my greatest
pleasure to get to know and work with the ever-expanding circle of
camp—staff, board, alum, campers, and their families.
What continues to impress me most is the incredibly strong connection
that those who are new to the camp community make with TVRC.
There is something about camp that immediately inspires us to care,
to plan our vacations to coincide with Final Rodeo and Campfire, to
develop a love of the West, and to give our time and resources to help
see camp through the next 75 years.
Thank you for your connection and commitment to camp. I look forward to seeing you this summer.
