created a video showing the

Service Learning Project : The
team decided to go to Will
Rogers, John Muir, and Edison
to teach students about how
runoff pollution affects the Santa
Monica Bay. They also invited
the elementary school students
and John Adams students to a
beach cleanup they organized.
The focus of these activities was
to try to teach students how the
things we do every day affect the
Santa Monica Bay. They went to
seven classes at the three elementary schools to play the
“Santa Monica Bay Game”. Ms.
Steinmetz also used this lesson
during two after school seminars
for the Science Magnet program.
Research Project: The focus of the
JAMS project was to learn how different variables, such as temperature, weather patterns, and different
chemicals affect plankton growth in
the Santa Monica Bay. Data is
collected weekly by one of two
teams (Team 1 is Steven, Nicholas,
and Eric. Team 2 is Dylan, Jivanto,
and Tessa.) at the Santa Monica
Pier at 6:45am (Yikes!). During
lunch, the team that collected the
data at the pier that morning
completes the water tests while the
other team analyzes the plankton
sample. Plankton data will be
collected until Spring Break and the
team will be writing up their results
for their science classes.

and Quiksilver, Inc. have created a
multi-faceted competition for
teacher-student teams in Southern
California that takes advantage of
kids’ love of the oceans to spark
their interest in science and the
environment. The Challenge also
seeks to foster leadership qualities
in young people through environmental awareness and stewardship.
What does the Challenge
involve? QuikScience Challenge
projects were to include the creation of a new ocean science lesson
plan for younger students, a community service project that is linked
to the new lesson plan, a proposal
for a research project (high school
only), a written report/portfolio of
the QuikScience project, and a
creative presentation (poster, computer generated, video, or multimedia.)
What did the JAMS team’s
Project consist of? This year’s
team got off to an early start in
September. With high expectations for themselves and a drive to
do well, they worked tirelessly for
four months (between 2 and 8
hours each week). Their project
included traveling to elementary
schools to teach a lesson about
how human actions affect the

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE
Dear JAMS Community,
The partnership between
school and home is important
on many levels. Most importantly, it is critical for students to
see the adults who surround
them model appropriate behavior in resolving differences,
problem solving challenges,
and being advocates for our
children. How we communicate
and respond to student behavior should reflect our common
values. Rewards and consequences should be consistent
with those values and we
should communicate our expectations for our children often. As we communicate to our
children who they can be and
help them make choices that
fulfill the dreams they are capable of achieving, they are more
likely to make positive choices
in their lives.
Included in this Gazette is a
celebration of student achievement in science, music, and
academics, In addition, I share
with you the work we are doing
to align our discipline policy
with our belief system and improve communication between
the home and school. Together, we create the community our children live in, grow up
in, and assume responsibility
in. Our responsibility is to
share this work and ensure that
every child has the support and
recognition to become an adult
we are all proud of.

Discipline, An Opportunity for All Students to Be Successful
Students look to adults as models for their own behavior. Modeling respect for one another as well as for students, as well as holding students
responsible for inappropriate behavior through consequences, allows the
student the opportunity to learn from mistakes and gain self-control and a
better understanding of the expected school behavior, the behavioral
“curriculum” of academia and what parents expect at home. It is important that every opportunity is taken to teach our young people what is appropriate behavior at home and school, model it through our own behavior,
and reinforce our work when they make choices that violate school and
home rules.

In addition to parent contact, students who misbehave or violate school
rules may receive an after school, break, or lunch time detention, class suspension, Saturday school, or school suspension, depending on the severity
of the behavior. There are times when students choose not to attend their
detention or Saturday school. This has posed a problem with our staff as
we try to hold student accountable for their behavior. As a result, we are
initiating an In-House suspension program at John Adams Middle School.
Beginning next week, students who choose not to attend Saturday School
will receive an In-House Suspension the following Tuesday. This InHouse suspension room will be monitored by a teacher where students are
expected to complete work, meet with a counselor to reflect on their behavior, and complete school service. In addition to our work to build relations with students and families, students will have an opportunity to reflect on their behavior, choices they are making, and continue to work on
their academics in this new setting.
In response to teacher and community input, our administrative staff is
reviewing our current discipline policy and procedures. In addition, an
action research committee, formed by teachers, are meeting to review
current research and make recommendations to improve our current
practice.
The purpose of our discipline policy is to help students reflect on their
behavior to make better choices to support their learning and foster an educational setting where all students can learn.

FROM YOUR PTSA PRESIDENT
Dear Parents, Teachers, and Students,
With our new school plan in place, we are seeing great successes, primarily in my opinion, in the areas of teaming, and
in creating connections between academic disciplines. 197 children are on the Honor Roll, and 317 are on the
Principal’s Honor Roll with a GPA of 3.5 or better! However, I would be remiss if I were to ignore the growing pains
that we are experiencing, but I have new reasons to be encouraged. The Administration has renewed its focus on a
clean campus, (Thank you Ms. Brinson and her Beautification Kids!) reviewed school rules and expectations with the
students, and has put new disciplinary strategies in place. (See Principal’s Message.) This is good news for ALL our
children. The Faculty Advisory Committee, Discipline Subcommittee has made excellent recommendations to our
Principal; she is excited to implement the suggestions from these teachers. To make discipline work, I believe, we must
help students reflect on their behavior, assist them as they make better choices to support their learning, and cultivate
an educational setting where all students can focus and learn.
JAMS parents have expressed concerns, and the Administration is responding. We can be optimistic that our concerns
will continue to be addressed. At the March PTSA Meeting, we held a forum where parents safely and respectfully
shared their concerns, their misunderstandings, and their fears with the Administration. Meetings like that are
opportunities for each of us to say, “How can I help? What's my part in helping make this better? How can we, the
JAMS community, help you achieve your goals for your kids, and how can the community help me achieve my goals
for mine?” If there are concerns not yet addressed to our satisfaction, we must find respectful, effective, and
appropriate ways to advocate for our children.
We saw at the February meeting how some members of our learning community may feel disenfranchised. We must
continue to look within us to find ways to reach out, and to explore the topics of understanding, mutual support, and
feeling responsible for one another. I look forward to hearing from you about ideas and resources to further a powerful
dialogue, and to move on into a whole new support network. It is key to communicate that ALL our children at JAMS
deserve the same rigorous and well-supported education, the same equitable, grace-based discipline, and the same safe
learning-focused environment.
What I have learned in the last few months, and what I believe is this: PTSA leadership should transcend socioeconomic and racial differences. The PTSA President should inspire school unity and pride around ideals much bigger
than prejudice, fear and self-interest. If parents, teachers, staff, administration, or parent-groups disagree, I must lead
the way to show respect for everyone’s processes, feelings, and experiences. It must be my goal to reach out, to listen,
to invite in, and to include. I must not grow complacent. I must attempt to see through different eyes so that I may
grasp the frustration of those who do not feel that they have a place at this table. All members of our learning
community must have enough positive experiences together for trust to develop, for trust is necessary to foster
communication. Many times we all strive to achieve the same goal, but approach from different angles. Sometimes we
are afraid that if the other group or entity gets what they want, something will be taken away from us or our childrenfavored status, competitive edge, comfort zone, extra assistance, or a feeling of belonging. Perhaps we carry within us
an unconscious fear that one person’s path to success, or one group’s achievement may discourage or deter our own.
Ultimately, what I wish to bring you is leadership that abandons politics based on fear and inspires courage and
confidence that we can have difficult conversations, learn from each other, advocate for all our children, and provide
supports for all who need them without sacrificing core values.
Thanks for all the letters and emails of encouragement. Your participation at John Adams is significant and important
to our children and to our learning community.

First JAMS Comedy Night Benefit Made Us Laugh!
The Comedy Night Benefit, hosted and put together by comic Janine Hayes, and sponsored by the PTSA, was a big
success! 150 adults attended from the John Adams learning community, and enjoyed the performances of the five
professional comics that participated. Duilio Cascio, Beautification Co-Chair got up with a slew of empty paint buckets and asked for contributions to the PTSA. Chairperson Kelly Pye organized a great night out for adults affiliated
with JAMS. The entire event, including donations, refreshment sales, and ticket sales showed a $2,300 profit! Many
thanks go to Kelly Pye, Duilio Cascio, Diane Ford, the Student Store sales team, Karen Reynolds, Ms. Irene Ramos,
Stanley Wilson, and especially JAMS mom, Janine Hayes for this funny fundraiser!
THE EXCHANGE!!!! Scholastic Book Fair is Coming!
Check out the latest books, software, and gifts at THE EXCHANGE!
coming May 19th through 26th. All the Required Summer Reading Books, plus the book that EVERYONE at SAMOHI
MUST READ will be at the Fair. Your student can buy gift certificates for teachers or purchase a book for the library!
There will be a Na NA Na Nachos Sale after school on Friday, May 19th and Friday, May 26th.
Chairperson Patti Braun is looking for parents and students that want to volunteer to set up the Fair at 8:30am on
Thursday, May 18th, work a lunch or after school shift, or an evening shift during Open House, and help tear down

National Junior Honor Society News
The students in the National Junior Honor Society have just completed a Clothing Drive for the National Council of
Jewish Women Los Angeles. Over 30 bags of clothing was collected, and the proceeds will benefit the needy. Next up
for this service organization is the Pennies for Patients fundraiser for the Leukemia Society, which will take place between March 20 and April 7. Informational flyers will be sent home through the Advisory Classes. The NJHS students
will be collecting donations to financially assist one or two young kids with their chemotherapy. The NJHS will also be
assisting LMU with the Special Games on Saturday, March 25th. Our members will be helping the LMU Students with a
variety of activities, working with physically and mentally challenged people. JAMS is proud of its NJHS members!

Students use the data collected and apply it to plankton. Students then build a
model of Phytoplankton or Zooplankton
that will sink as slowly as possible, showing how plankton adapt to drifting in the
ocean
Competition Results The JAMS team
was qualified for the finals in the middle
school division, and traveled to USC for
an interview. with the the judges included
USC Wrigley Institute scientists. Last
year, the team from John Adams won the
Grand Prize- an educational trip to Cabo
San Lucas. This year many more teams
entered and the competition was very
stiff. The excellent work of our JAMS
team was rewarded, as they accepted
the prize for “Outstanding
Outreach Project”.
8th grader Dylan Braun, who also competed on the JAMS team last year, is
grateful to Brigitte Steinmetz. “The QuikSCience team wants to show our appreciation to Ms. Steinmetz, our advisor, for
her incredible commitment to our team,
her passion for marine science, and her
expertise. No one could have been
more supportive, or taught us more
about the ocean. This was an amazing
experience.” Brigitte Steinmetz says, “I
am extremely proud of this group of
students. They set high expectations
for themselves, making it easy as a
coach to push them towards achieving
what I was confident they could accomplish. They have far exceeded both
their own and my expectations. It was a
fantastic learning experience for both
the students and the community.” The
seventh grade team members are already looking forward to next year’s
competition.

Haugh Performing Arts Center at Citrus College on Sunday, January 29th.

These five students were among 1,500 middle and high school students

and they performed at the Fresno Convention Center on Saturday, February 19th.
Bravo to our JAMS musicians for their hard work, dedication, and commitment
to artistic and musical excellence!

translated into Spanish, provides an in-depth look at our learning community.

more, flyers come home in your child's backpacks. (Well, they make it into the Advisory
Teachers' boxes... after that... we're not always sure!)

The JAMS PTSA Email Group
Through Yahoo groups, Patti Braun sends out informal supplementary email reminders of
events and programs. Parents signed up to receive these emails in the translated Communications form sent in the Summer Mailing packet to every JAMS family. If you would like to receive emails from the PTSA, please email Patti at [email protected]. NEW! If you are interested in forming an email group that would like to send and receive PTSA email translations in
Spanish, please email Hilda Garcia at [email protected].

PTSA mails out a packet to each JAMS family, including registered incoming 6th graders, filled
with info about schedules, gym clothes, orientation and registration dates, and more!

The 2nd Thursday of every month, PTSA provides opportunities for parent ed, networking, and
fellowship for JAMS families.
The Norseman
Published by the journalism class, through the support of Irene Ramos, advisor, the first three
issues of the Norseman were paid for with PTSA funds, with the rest coming out of site budget
funds.
Chats With The Principal
Sponsored by the PTSA, our Principal Irene Ramos makes an effort each month to meet with
parents to take questions, and provide updates. This usually takes place on the third Thursday
of the month at 8:30 am in the library, and refreshments are provided.

DON"T FORGET TO ORDER A YEARBOOK!
The Yearbook Staff of 2006 would like to remind parents that order forms for the Norseman 2006 are
available in Room 47. Send a check, payable to JAMS Yearbook with your child; he or she can fill out the
form. A limited number of books are printed, so it's best to order your child's yearbook early. The price is $45
through the month of April. This year's book will not only include 36 pages of color, but a CD from the JAMS
Music Department! The Norseman staff works very hard after school and even on Saturdays to produce another award winning book. Remember, the yearbook is $45, but the memories captured within are priceless!
WANTED!!! CD BURNER...
Ms. Nonhof, the Yearbook Advisor, and Ms. Woo, the Music Department Chair could really use a CD
burner. This could be used not only for the Yearbook Music CDs, but could be used for years to come to record and sell concert CDs. Is there a parent or a group of parents that could purchase a CD burner?

EDDIE LOPEZ
On February 28, at 9:21 p.m., in the 2600 block of Pico Boulevard, Eduardo (Eddie)
Lopez, 15, was shot by an unknown assailant in the upper torso and died upon reaching
the hospital. Eddie was an alumni of JAMS, an honor student at Santa Monica High
School, a star athelete on the school’s football and baseball teams, had been an altar boy
at Saint Monica’s church, and described by other students as very popular. Eddie's dream
was for a better education so that he could provide for his mother and grandmother. The
Santa Monica Community has pulled together and held numerous memorials for Eddie
culminating in a march against violence the day before his funeral and burial on
Saturday, March 11th.
Coach Fabian Padilla had this to say on SamohiPALS at yahoo.com:
This is a time when we all need to pull together as a community and help the Lopez family financially; our moral
support has been great. I recently felt the need and had the opportunity to visit the Lopez family to offer my
condolences and I will tell you it is heart breaking. The most devastating thing a parent and family can go through. I
felt I could do enough to help them through this time of grieving and the future to come. I have had the pleasure of
being involved with youth sports as a coach, and volunteer for about 30 years, and kids like Eddie are rare. What a
senseless loss to our community, and to his family. Please do what you can to ease the financial burden this family
faces
and always remember Eddie and the love he shared with all of those around him. He will be missed dearly.

SEEKING THEMED ITEMS FROM EVERY JAMS FAMILY FOR
FIESTA AUCTION BASKETS!
At our wonderful upcoming Fiesta Celebration Fundraiser on April 30th, there will be a Silent Auction
comprised of Themed-Baskets. Each Advisory Class will select a theme, and PTSA is asking every student to bring in an item for their Class Basket.
For example- if your student's Advisory Class Theme is "Family Movie Night", each family in the class
might send in a new DVD, or a Blockbuster gift card, or a box of microwave popcorn and a six pack of
coke, or a package of red vines, depending on what you like, and what you can afford. If each family does
their part, and each student brings in an item for their class basket, we can raise thousands of dollars to pay
for programs, personnel, field trips, and more!
In addition, parents can send in gift cards, and certificates from business that they own, work at or
patronize. Tickets to movies, concerts, and sports events are greatly desired as well! Donors of major

JAMS Fiesta April 30th
to Showcase Student Talent
Can your student sing, dance, or play
an instrument? Does she or he have
an unusual talent? Does he or she
have a garage band? How about you,
Mom and Dad? The JAMS Fiesta Talent Show is looking for performers. All
family members are welcome to participate, and must be able to perform
on April 30th, between 12:00pm and
6:00pm. Auditions for the Talent Show
will take place Wednesday and Thursday, April 5th and 6th in the Auditorium
from 3:00pm till 6:00pm. Performers
should bring their recorded music, if
applicable. Acts, costumes, and music

Anti-Harassment/
Anti-Bullying Month
Advisory teachers are completing worksheets to address the issues of bullying
and harassment with students. Activities are planned
throughout this month to view
a video and complete worksheets with students. In addition, 7th grade students
complete the curriculum for
Project Alert to address peer
pressure with drugs and alcohol and teach strategies to
resolve differences and practice tolerance, as well as the
curriculum for Roads to Respect, which goes into sexual
harassment- defining it and
providing tools to deal with it.

is greatly appreciated. As of March 7, 2006, 104 families have donated a total of $29,087.02. We look forward to a donation from every family at

Qué es el Desafío QuikSCience (QuickScience Challenge)? El Instituto Wrigley para Estudios del Medio
Ambiente de USC (Wrigley Institute for Environmental
Studies) y Quiksilver, Inc. crearon una competencia
polifacética para equipos de maestros y estudiantes en
el Sur de California que se aprovecha de la pasión que
tienen los niños por el océano para promover su interés

En qué consiste el proyecto del equipo JAMS? El equipo de este año empezó temprano, en Setiembre. Con expectativas altas y un deseo de hacer las cosas bien, trabajaron sin descanso durante
cuatro meses (entre dos y cuatro horas por semana). Su proyecto incluía visitar escuelas primarias
para enseñar cómo las acciones de los seres humanos afectan las Cuenca de Santa Mónica, un plan
de lecciones que integraba la fisica y las ciencias naturales, un proyecto de investigación, y una carpeta electrónica amplia para exponer su trabajo. La carpeta se expuso como un sitio web e incluía
una página ilustrada con texto y fotos para cada sección del proyecto. El equipo también hizo un
video que muestra al equipo en acción.
El Proyecto de Servicio de Enseñanza: El equipo decidió ir a las escuelas Will Rogers, John Muir,
y Edison para enseñarle a los estudiantes cómo la contaminación afecta la Bahía de Santa Mónica.
También invitaron a los estudiantes de las escuelas primarias y de John Adams a la limpieza de la
playa organizada por ellos. El énfasis de estas actividades era tratar de enseñar a los estudiantes

Research Project: El énfasis del proyecto de JAMS era aprender cómo las diferentes variables
como la temperatura, los patrones del clima, y diferentes químicos afectan el crecimiento del plancton
en la Bahía de Santa Mónica. Los datos se tomaron semanalmente a través de uno de los dos equipos (el Equipo 1 está integrado por Steven, Nicholas y Eric. El Equipo 2 está integrado por Dylan,
Jivanto y Tessa) en el Muelle de Santa Mónica a las 6:45 a.m. (Ayyy!) Durante el almuerzo, el equipo
que recogió los datos en el Muelle esa mañana, lleva a cabo las pruebas de agua mientras el otro
equipo analiza la muestra de plancton. Se seguirán tomando datos del plancton hasta las vacaciones

Plan de Lecciones: El plan de lecciones fue creado para las clases de ciencias del 8avo. grado y
está diseñado para ayudar a los estudiantes a entender cómo el peso y la forma afectan la velocidad
de distintos objetos que caen a través de agua salada y el agua dulce. Los estudiantes dejan caer
objetos de distintos pesos y formas en agua dulce y salada, tomando el tiempo de cuanto tardan en
llegar al fondo. Los estudiantes utilizan los datos obtenidos y los aplican al plancton. Después los
estudiantes construyen un modelo de Fitoplancton y Zooplancton que se hunda lo más lentamente
posible, mostrando cómo el plancton se adapta para ir a la deriva en el océano.
Resultados de la Competencia: El equipo JAMS calificó para las finales en la división de escuela
intermedia, y fue a USC para entrevistarse con los jueces, incluyendo científicos del Instituto Wrigley
de USC. El año pasado, el equipo de John Adams ganó el primer lugar: un viaje educativo al Cabo
San Lucas. Este año ingresaron más equipos y la competencia fue más dura. El excelente trabajo del
equipo JAMS fue recompensado con el premio “Outstanding Outreach Project”.

Diciplina, una oportunidad para que TODOS los estudiantes sean exitosos
Los estudiantes miran a los adultos como modelos para su propio comportamiento. Dar ejemplo de
respeto hacia los demás, incluyendo a los estudiantes, y hacer que los estudiates se
responsabilicen por su comportamiento inapropiado a través de consecuencias, les da la
oportunidad de aprender de sus errores, ganar autocontrol y una mayor comprensión del
comportamiento esperado en la escuela, el “curriculum” de comportamiento académico y cuáles
son las expectativas de los padres en casa. Es importante aprovechar cada oportunidad para
enseñarles a nuestros jóvenes cuál es el comportamiento apropiado en la casa y en la escuela, dar
un buen ejemplo a través de nuestro comportamiento, y reforzar nuestro trabajo cuando ellos tomen
decisiones que violen las reglas de la escuela o de la casa.

Además de notificar a los padres, los estudiantes que se comporten mal o que violen las reglas de
la escuela pueden ser castigados quedándose en la escuela después de clase, perdiendo su recreo
o su hora de almuerzo, siendo expulsados temporalmente de clases o de la escuela, o viniendo a la
escuela el sábado, dependiendo de la gravedad de su comportamiento.
Hay ocaciones en las que los estudiantes eligen no cumplir con el castigo de quedarse después de
clases o de venir a la escuela el sábado. Esto representa un problema con nuestro personal porque
es así como nosotros tratamos de hacer que los estudiantes asuman responsabilidad por
sus acciones. Debido a esto, estamos iniciando un programa de suspensión que se lleve a
cabo en las instalaciones de JAMS. Bajo este programa, que empezará la próxima semana, los estudiantes que elijan no venir a la escuela el sábado recibirán una suspensión
en JAMS el siguiente martes. Esta suspensión que se hará en el cuarto de expulsiones,
estará bajo la supervisión de un maestro y el estudiante deberá terminar trabajos, reunirse
con un consejero para reflexionar sobre su comportamiento y dar servicio a la escuela.
Además de nuestro trabajo creando relaciones con los estudiantes y sus familias, los
estudiantes tendrán la oportunidad de reflexionar sobre su comportamiento, las decisiones
que están tomando, y continuar trabajando en sus estudios en este nuevo ambiente.
En respuesta a la información que provean los maestros y la comunidad, nuestros
empleados administrativos están revisando nuestros procedimientos y políticas
disciplinarias actuales. Además, un comité de investigación formado por maestros, se
reúne para revisar las investigaciones actuales y hacer recomendaciones para mejorar
nuestras prácticas actuales.
El propósito de nuestra política disciplinaria es ayudar a los estudiantes a refleccionar
sobre su comportamiento para que tomen mejores decisiones y apoyar y promover un
ambiente educativo donde todos los estudiantes puedan aprender.

stimados padres, maestros y estudiantes:
Hemos puesto en práctica nuestro nuevo plan de trabajo y estamos viendo grandes éxitos, principalmente en mi opinión,
en las áreas de formación de equipos y creación de conecciones entre las disciplinas académicas. 197 niños están en el
“Honor Roll” y 316 están en el “Honor Roll” de la directora con un “GPA” de 3.5 o superior! Sería negligencia ignorar los
problemas que hemos experimentado, pero tengo nuevas razones para estar animada. La administración se ha concentrado
nuevamente en mantener limpias las instalaciones, (Gracias Sra. Brinson y a los niños que trabajaron en el
embellecimiento!), ha revisado las reglas y expectativas de la escuela con los estudiantes, y ha establecido nuevas
estrategias disciplinarias.
Estas son buenas noticias para TODOS nuestros niños. El Subcomité de Disciplina de la Facultad del Comité de
Asesoría (FAC) le ha dado excelentes recomendaciones a nuestra directora y ella quiere poner en practica las sugerencias de
estos maestros.
Para hacer que la disciplina funcione, yo creo que debemos ayudar a los estudiantes para que ellos reflexionen sobre su
comportamiento y para que tomen mejores decisiones que sirvan de apoyo a su aprendizaje y cultivar un ambiente
educacional donde todos los estudiantes puedan concentrarse y aprender.
Los padres de JAMS han expresado sus preocupaciones y la administración está trabajando en ellas. Podemos ser
optimistas y pensar que la administración seguirá atendiendo nuestras preocupaciones. En la reunión de la PTSA de marzo,
hicimos un foro en el que los padres compartieron de una manera respetuosa y segura sus preocupaciones, malentendidos, y
miedos con la administración. Reuniones como esa dan la oportunidad de que cada uno diga: “Cómo puedo ayudar?, Cuál
es mi trabajo para hacer que esto funcione mejor? Cómo podemos nosotros, la comunidad JAMS, ayudarle a alcanzar las
metas que usted tiene para sus niños, y cómo puede la comunidad ayudarme a alcanzar las metas para los míos? Si todavía
hay preocupaciones en las que no se está trabajando de una manera satisfactoria, debemos encontrar una manera respetuosa,
efectiva y apropiada de luchar por nuestros hijos.
En la reunión de febrero nos dimos cuenta de que algunos miembros de nuestra comunidad de aprendizaje pueden sentir
que se les priva de sus derechos, y tenemos que continuar buscando maneras de tender una mano, y de explorar los temas de
comprensión, apoyo mutuo y sentirnos reponsables los unos por los otros. Espero recibir ideas y recursos de ustedes, que
propicien un mejor diálogo y nos ayuden a movernos en una red de apoyo nueva y completa. Es importante que todos sepan
que TODOS los niños en JAMS merecen la misma educación rigurosa y sólida, fundamentada en la misma disciplina
equitativa, y el mismo ambiente seguro enfocado hacia el aprendizaje.
Lo que he aprendido en los últimos meses y lo que creo es lo siguiente: el liderazgo de la PTSA debe trascender las
diferencias socio-económicas y raciales. El presidente de la PTSA debe inspirar orgullo y unión escolar alrededor de ideales
que vayan más allá del prejuicio, el miedo y el interés propio. Si los padres, maestros, empleados, la administración o
grupos de padres están en desacuerdo, yo debo guiar el camino y mostrar respeto hacia los procesos, sentimientos y
experiencias de todos. Mi meta debe ser tender la mano, invitar, e incluirlos a todos. No debo darme por satisfecha. Debo
tratar de ver las cosas desde distintos puntos de vista para poder comprender la frustación de los que sienten que no tienen
un lugar en esta mesa. Todos los miembros de nuestra comunidad de aprendizaje deben tener suficientes experiencias
positivas para desarrollar confianza, porque la confianza es necesaria para promover la comunicación. En muchas ocasiones
todos luchamos por las mismas metas, pero desde puntos de vista diferentes. Algunas veces tememos que si el otro grupo o
entidad recibe lo que quiere, nos quitarán algo a nosotros o a nuestros niños, un estatus privilegiado, la zona de comfort,
asistencia adicional, o un sentido de pertenencia. Puede ser que tengamos algun miedo inconsciente de que el triunfo de una
persona o el logro de un grupo puedan impedir el nuestro. Finalmente, lo que deseo brindarle es liderazgo que deja de lado
las políticas que se basen en miedo y que inspire valor y confianza de que podemos tener conversaciones difíciles, aprender
de los demás, luchar por nuestros niños,y darles apoyo a todos los que lo necesiten sin sacrificar nuestros valores.
Gracias por todas la cartas y los correos electrónicos alentadores. Su participación en John Adams es significativa y
muy importante para nuestros niños y nuestra comunidad de aprendizaje.

La Primera Noche de Comedia de JAMS nos hizo reir!
La noche de comedia, presentada y organizada por la comediante Janine Hayes, y patrocinada por la PTSA, fue un gran éxito!
150 adultos de la comunidad de aprendizaje de John Adams asistieron y disfrutaron las presentaciones de cinco comediantes
profesionales: James P. Connolly, Rebecca Arthur, Gayla Johnson, Mike Marino, y ls señorita Hayes. Duilio Cascio, encargado
adjunto del Comité de Embellecimiento, llevó unos cubos de pintura vacios y pidió contribuciones para la PTSA. La presidenta
Kelly Pye organizó una noche estupenda para los afiliados de JAMS. Todo el evento, incluyendo donaciones, venta de
refrigerios, y venta de boletos dejó una ganacia de $2,300! Le damos las gracias a Kelly Pye, Duilio Cascio, Diane Ford, el
equipo de ventas de la tienda de estudiantes, Karen Reynolds, Ms. Irene Ramos, Stanley Wilson, y especialmente a la Janine

Marzo el mes contra el acoso y la intimidación
Los maestros de consejería están terminando de preparar las hojas de trabajo para tratar los temas de acoso e intimidación con
los estudiantes. Planeamos actividades durante el mes para ver un video y completar las hojas de trabajo con los estudiantes.
Además los estudiantes de 7mo grado terminarán el plan de estudios para el “Proyecto Alerta” (Alert Proyect) para tratar sobre la
presión para consumir drogas y alcohol entre compañeros, además de enseñarles estrategias para resolver sus diferencias y
practicar la tolerancia. junto con el plan de estudios de “Caminos hacia el respeto” (Roads to Respect) que se enfoca en el acoso

All-Southern California Honor Orchestra and Honor Band

Casi 900 estudiantes de la escuela intermedia a lo largo del Sur
de California participaron en las audiciones. Connor and Joseph
interpretaron en el Haugh Permorming Arts Center en el Citrus
College el Domingo 29 de enero.

California que dieron una audición para este prestigioso evento, e interpretaron en el Centro de Convenciones de Fresno el sábado
19 de febrero.

Noticias de la Sociedad Nacional Juvenil de Honor
Los estudiantes de la Sociedad Nacional Juvenil de Honor NJHS acaban de terminar una campaña de recaudación de ropa
para el Consejo Nacional de Mujeres Judías (National Council of Jewish Women) en Los Angeles. Se reunierón más de 30
bolsas con ropa y las ganancias beneficiarán a los necesitados. Junto con esta organización de servicio está la
recaudación de fondos “Pennies para Pacientes” para la Sociedad con Leucemia, la cual se llevará a cabo entre el 20 de
marzo y el 7 de abril. Se enviarán volantes informativos a casa através de las clases de consejería. Los estudiantes del
NJHS recolectarán donaciones para ayudar financieramente a uno o dos niños con su quimioterapia. La NJHS también
ayudará a LMU con diferentes actividades, trabajando con personas que tienen retos mentales y psicológicos. JAMS está
orgulloso de los miembros de NJHS.

ESTAMOS RECOGIENDO ARTICULOS POR TEMAS DE
TODAS LAS FAMILIAS DE JAMS PARA LAS CANASTAS DE LA FIESTA DE SUBASTA!
En nuestra maravillosa fiesta de recaudación de fondos, el 30 de abril, habrá una subasta silenciosa, constituida por canastas de
temas. Cada clase de consejería escojerá un tema, y la PTSA le solicita a cada estudiante que traiga una cosa para la canasta de su clase.
Por ejemplo: si el tema de su clase de consejería es “Noche familiar de pelicula”, cada familia en la clase puede mandar un DVD
Nuevo, o un regalo de blockbuster, o una caja de palomitas de maíz para micro-ondas o un paquete de 6 coca colas, dependiendo
de lo que le guste y cuánto pueda gastar. Si cada familia pone de su parte y cada estudiante trae una cosa para su canasta,
podríamos recaudar miles de dólares para pagar programas, para más personal, viajes de campo, y mucho más!
Además, los padres pueden mandar tarjetas de regalo prepagadas y certificados de su negocio propio, o de su lugar de
trabajo o de sus negocios favoritos. Los tiquetes de entrada para el cine, conciertos o eventos deportivos también son muy
cotizados!!!! Los donadores de artículos importantes (de $50 ó más) recibirán cartas de agradecimiento que se pueden usar como

Se envía por correo a su casa cuatro veces al año. El Boletín fue creado por la Co-Editora Patti Braun y la Co-Editora y Maquetista
June Stoddard, junto con Marla Eby, encargada de Distribución. El boletín, que siempre se traduce al español, ofrece una mirada a
fondo de nuestra comunidad de aprendizaje.
Volantes:
Los volantes, que anuncian las reuniones del PTSA, las ofertas de enriquecimiento para después de clases de recaudación de
fondos, eventos especiales y otros, llegan a su casa en las mochilas de sus hijos. (Bueno, llegan hasta las cajas de los maestros de
consejería... después de eso... no estamos seguros!)

Correo de Verano:
PTSA hace un paquete para cada familia de JAMS, incluyendo a los nuevos estudiantes registrados en 6to grado, que contiene la
información de los horarios, la ropa para deportes, fechas de orientación y registro, y otros!
Reuniones de la PTSA:
El 2ndo jueves de cada mes, la PTSA brinda oportunidades de educación para los padres, establecer contactos y camaraderia para
las familias de JAMS.
El Vikingo (The Norseman):
El Vikingo es publicado por la clase de periodismo, con el apoyo de Irene Ramos, consejera. Las primeras 3 ediciones fueron
pagadas con los fondos de PTSA, y el resto con fondos de otros presupuestos.
Charlas con la directora: Patrocinado por PTSA, nuestra directora Irene Ramos hace un esfuerzo cada mes y se reúne con los
padres para responder sus preguntas y mantenerlos actualizados. Normalmente se lleva a cabo el 3er Martes del mes a las 8:30
a.m. en la biblioteca, se darán refregerios.
Adicionalmente :
La administración de JAMS también apoya la comunicación: La directora envía a su casa un comunicado quincenal: Cada 2do
jueves de cada mes, publica el periódico de los estudiates “El Vikingo” (the Norseman), y el último jueves de cada mes proporciona
un calendario enviado a la casa en las mochilas de su hijo/a. Y los eventos normalmente se anuncian en la carpa.
NO OLVIDE ORDENAR SU ANUARIO!
El personal encargado del anuario del 2006 quiere recordarles a los padres de familia que los formularios para el
Norseman 2006 están disponibles en la Clase 47. Mande un cheque a nombre de JAMS Yearbook con su hijo; él o ella
pueden llenar el formulario. Se imprime un número limitado de libros, por lo que es mejor que ordene el anuario de su hijo
pronto. El precio es $45 durante el mes de abril. El libro de este año no solo incluirá 36 páginas a color, sino también un
disco compacto del Departamento de Música de JAMS! El personal de Norseman trabaja muy duro después de clases e
incluso los sábados para producir otro libro que gane premios. Recuerde que el libro cuesta $45, pero los recuerdos que
contiene no tienen precio!
A Ms. Nonhof, la consejera del Anuario, y a Ms. Woo, la Directora del Departamento de Músico, les serviría mucho un
quemador de discos compactos. Se podría utilizar no sólo para quemar los discos compactos con la música del anuario,
sino también en los próximos años para grabar y vender discos compactos de conciertos. Hay algún padre o grupo de

EDDIE LOPEZ
Eddie Lopez Fund
El 28 de Febrero a las 9:21 p.m., en la cuadra 2600 del
Bulevar Pico, un agresor desconocido le disparó a Eduardo Lopez (Eddie) de 15 años en la parte
superior del torso y éste murió al llegar al hospital. Eddie fue un alumno de JAMS, un estudiante
de honor en Santa Mónica High School, un atleta estrella en los equipos de football y baseball, y
también monaguillo en la iglesia de Santa Mónica, es descrito por sus compañeros como un
muchacho muy popular. El sueño de Eddie era obtener una mejor educación para así poder
ayudar a su mamá y a su abuela. La comunidad de Santa Mónica ha organizado y realizado
numerosas ceremonias comemorativas para Eddie que culminarón con una marcha de paz y
unidad a través del Bulevar Pico un día antes de su funeral, el cual se llevó a cabo el sabado 11 de marzo.
El entrenador Fabián Padilla dijo lo siguiente en Samohi PALS:
Este es un momento en donde todos necesitamos unirnos como comunidad y ayudar financieramente a la familia Lopez, nuestro
apoyo moral ha sido muy bueno. Recientemente sentí la necesidad y tuve la oportunidad de visitar a la familia Lopez para
ofrecerles mis condolencias y fue una experiencia desconsoladora. La más devastadora experiencia que pueda tener una
familia. Sentí que nada que yo pudiera hacer sería suficiente para ayudarlos en este momento de dolor ni en un futuro. He tenido
el placer relacionarme con jóvenes como entrenador, y también he sido voluntario aproximadamente 30 años, y no es frecuente
encontrar muchachos como Eddie. Que pérdida tan grande para nuestra comunidad y para su familia. Por favor hagan lo posible
para ayudar a esta familia con la carga financiera a la que deben hacer frente y recuerden siempre a Eddie y el amor que
compartió con todos aquellos a su alrededor.
