The inaugural exhibition of Australia’s
first gay and lesbian museum officially
opened this week.
The Sydney Mardi Gras Museum
Debut Exhibition, which launched on
Oxford St on Tuesday, focuses on the
history of the parade from its beginnings
in the 1970s to the present day.
Drawn largely from the Australian
Lesbian and Gay Archives, the
exhibition features memorabilia and
archival evidence such as photographs,
costumes, posters and headlines from
past festivals.
The exhibition was launched by a host
of prominent figures including Sydney
Lord Mayor Clover Moore, Sydney state
MP Alex Greenwich, and former ABC
broadcaster and gay rights campaigner
Julie McCrossin.
Moore said that the exhibition
highlighted the vital role Mardi Gras
played in the community, both for those
who were part of it and people who are
new to the culture.
“There are a lot of young gay people
who don’t know the history – they never
went through the AIDS epidemic or the
candlelight vigils, and it’s important that
they realise what it took to get to where
we are,” Moore said.
While the exhibition will run
throughout Mardi Gras until March 3, a
permanent site for the museum has yet
to be agreed upon. Mardi Gras’ original
plan to use a city-owned building in
Taylor Square has met with opposition
from the council, which intends to use
the proposed space as a bicycle hub.
Mardi Gras CEO Michael Rolik said
he was thrilled at the launch’s success,
but indicated that Mardi Gras would
continue the push for a permanent
museum in Taylor Square.
“We had to leave quite a bit out of the
exhibition – everyone in the community
has a treasure trove of stories, and a
permanent museum would let us tell
those stories. We’re looking forward

McCrossin, who was involved in the
original gay rights protests of the 1970s,
compared the prospect of a permanent
gay rights museum to the Australian
War Memorial and the Sydney Jewish
Museum.
“Museums

people’s

Doctor off the
hook
>> NATIONAL
A doctor who was one of 150
Australian medical professionals to
petition against marriage equality last
year because it would have “negative
health consequences”, has been let off
the hook by medical authorities.
The Australian Doctor website
reported last week that Western
Australia GP Dr Lachlan Dunjey was
cleared of any wrongdoing by the
Medical Board of Australia.
In April last year, the Star Observer
revealed the group of doctors, led by
Dr Dunjey, made a submission to the
Senate inquiry into marriage equality,
saying it would negatively impact on
people’s general health and potentially
increase HIV rates.
It said marriage equality would
“normalise” homosexual behaviour
and pointed to the higher rates of
HIV and syphillis among men who
have sex with men compared with
heterosexuals.
It led to former Victorian Equal
Opportunity Commission board
member Dr Kuruvilla George
resigning after he had supported the
submission.

Australia Day honour
for mighty muso
>> NATIONAL
The gay co-founder and artistic director of
the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and
Brandenburg Choir has been recognised in
the Australia Day Honours List, announced
on Saturday, January 26.
Paul Dyer was awarded the Officer
of the Order of Australia (OA) for his
‘distinguished service to the performing
arts, particularly orchestral music as a
director, conductor and musician, through
the promotion of educational programs
and support for emerging artists’.
“This award is wonderful recognition
of Paul’s huge contribution to music
in Australia, through his founding and
inspired leadership of the Australian
Brandenburg
Orchestra,”
Australian
Brandenburg Orchestra chairman Rowan
Ross said.
“Under Paul’s direction, the Brandenburg
has become one of the most outstanding
period instrument ensembles in the world.
This honour is richly deserved.”
Dyer said it was a wonderful honour and
that he was grateful to Australia audiences
who had embraced the Brandenburg so
strongly.
“When we started the Orchestra in 1990,
there was no skill or tradition in the use
of period instruments or playing on gut
strings in Australia. We had to start from
scratch,” he said.
“Many fine musicians and students
took the leap of faith with me. This award
acknowledges just how far we’ve come
in bringing the exquisite sound of period
music to life in Australia in the modern
age, and with a distinctive Australian style.
“Today, 24 years later, I proudly take to
the stage with talented and highly skilled
early music musicians – both orchestral
players and choral singers - who are
amongst the finest in the world. We enjoy
a place in the heart of many Australians
through our concerts and recordings and
that is something for which I am very
grateful.”
Brandenburg’s 2013 season kicks off in
Sydney and Melbourne in March with the
return of popular French countertenor
Philippe Jaroussky.

Marriage equality advocates have
welcomed the new Australian of
the Year Ita Buttrose for her longtime support of gay rights and HIV
awareness.
Buttrose urged the Labor members to
back marriage equality at the Australian
Labor Party’s national conference in
2011 when they added the issue to their
policy platform.
She was made an Officer of the
Order of Australia for her service to
the community, especially her efforts
spearheading Australia’s HIV/AIDS
education program.
Australian
Marriage
Equality
national convenor Rodney Croome
said he hoped such a high-profile
marriage equality supporter would
send a positive message to our national
leaders.
“Ita’s unequivocal support for
marriage equality is yet another
example of how this far-sighted
Australian has led where the rest of the
country has followed,” he said.

FamilyVoice Australia is literally
praying for religious exemptions

The

diversity which they say will result
from any changes to national antidiscrimination legislation.
“Almighty

we

about proposed reforms of antidiscrimination laws, as they may bring
same-sex normalisation based on
gender identity and sexual orientation,”
the Australia Day Prayer Points read on
the FamilyVoice website.
The organisation has recently

Jason keeps eyes on the ball
>> NATIONAL
BENN DORRINGTON
Armed with just his own story and
beyondblue’s backing, Australia will be
seeing much more of openly gay AFL
player Jason Ball this year as he ramps up
his work as a beyondblue ambassador
challenging homophobia in sport.
His efforts already appear to be reaping
results as Carlton midfielder Brock
McLean became the first professional
AFL footballer to take a stand for lesbian,
gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex
people last weekend.
Fairfax Media reported his decision
was inspired by his sister’s experience
as a lesbian as well as Ball’s work
highlighting the issue and gay-straight
allies such as Wallabies star David
Pocock.
This weekend, Ball is leading Victoria’s
annual pride march but he has been
inundated with speaking requests at
high schools, camps and events.
“I think the positive reaction has
come from the fact that it’s an area that
we haven’t really made in-roads to, it’s
sort of one of the last areas which we
have to get at that is sport and football
especially,” Ball told the Star Observer.
Ball has been working hard since he
came out publicly in September to get
his message out there, taking annual
leave from his job to speak at events
including to new AFL draftees as well
as 100 Year 11 boys at a Lord Somers
camp.
“I was able to talk about what it was
like for me growing up in a football
community, being gay and how alone
I felt in that environment because I
didn’t know of any gay AFL players and
suspected the worst in how they would
react in terms of the language they
used,” he said.
“Just for them to know how that
affected me and to know we are, gay
people, we do exist in these footy teams
and they’re your mates, they’re your
team mates and just to think about it
and they can make a real difference.”
“Most of them will be straight, these
guys and they think ‘how does this relate
to me’ but what I think I can share with
them is my story and how my team
mates reacted to me.”
For the 25 year-old, it’s the staggeringly
higher rates of depression, self-harm
and suicide among LGBTI youth that
keep him motivated.
“I remember thinking that I would
never be able to come out to my football
team and there is no openly gay AFL
players and I don’t know of any gay AFL
players, so you know we’ve still got a bit
of a way to go but I’m really proud of
how far we’ve come so far.”

Katter loses anti-gay candidates
>> NATIONAL
BENN DORRINGTON
A Victorian candidate for Bob Katter’s
Australian Party (KAP) who linked gay
people with paedophiles has quit, while
a Queensland Senate nominee has had
his membership suspended in fallout
from last week’s extraordinary display of
anti-gay animus from the party.
Gay rights advocates have called on
the country’s major political parties to
boycott voting preferences towards KAP
if more anti-gay comments emerge.
Tess Corbett bowed out from her
nomination for the federal seat of
Wannon in Victoria last Thursday.
Earlier in the week, she told the
Hamilton Spectator she considered gay
people to be in the same category as
paedophiles.
“Paedophiles will be next in line to be
recognised in the same way as gays and
lesbians and get rights,” she said.
“I don’t want gays, lesbians to be
working my kindergarten. If you don’t
like it go to another kindergarten.”
To her defence, former national
secretary and Queensland Senate
nominee Bernard Gaynor tweeted on
Wednesday that he did not want gay
people teaching his children.
“If we value free speech and
democracy then we would respect
THE VICTORIAN COALITION GOVERNMENT
the right of Christians to hold their
views about right and wrong. And as a
Christian, the homosexual lifestyle is
immoral,” Gaynor told the Courier Mail
in response to the controversy.
“I don’t think Bob would have a
problem with me saying this. As a parent,
we should have the discretion over who
teaches our children.”
KAP national director Aidan
McLindon said the party had suspended
Gaynor’s membership.
Katter told media outlets earlier in
the week that Corbett’s comments were
“stupid” and said they would be dealt
with internally. But questions about
the controversy continued to irk the
Far North Queensland MP during the
week and led to him walking out of an
interview with television journalists.
Australian Marriage Equality national
convenor Rodney Croome said Katter
and his party members needed to
realise the damage these remarks had
on vulnerable gay and lesbian youth.
“If this continues, the Coalition and
Labor Party must reject the bigotry by
ruling out a preference swap with the
Katter Australian Party,” Croome said.
Politicians from both major parties
have condemned the views.
Katter has said he would like to run
a candidate in every seat ahead of this
year’s federal election.

A public hearing into the federal government’s
controversial anti-discrimination legislation
saw LGBTI rights advocates and Christian
charities state their grievances with the bill last
week.
The Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs
Committee, chaired by Labor Senator Trish
Crossin and Liberal Senator Gary Humphries
at state Parliament House last Thursday, also
saw testimony from Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander bodies, legal experts and civil
liberties groups
Speakers faced questions from eight federal
Senators including the Shadow AttorneyGeneral George Brandis and openly gay Labor
Senator Louise Pratt.
Representatives from the NSW Gay and
Lesbian Rights Lobby (GLRL) and Organisation
Intersex International Australia (OII), who
pushed for the removal of religious exemptions
and a recognition of intersex people in the
legislation, met with a frosty reception from
Liberal senators.
Liberal Senator Scott Ryan said the removal
of the exemptions, which allow religious bodies
to discriminate in their hiring practices, could
lead to a “slippery slope” ending in regulating
what Christian schools teach their students.
Ryan asked GLRL co-convenor Dr Justin
Koonin if he would “be back in five years” to
that end.
Koonin said Ryan’s inquiry detracted from
the debate.
“We were there to focus on issues that have
a demonstrable effect on LGBTI people now,
not worry about some hypothetical in 20 or 30
years time,” he said.
OII Australia president Gina Wilson said that
while overall OII was satisfied with the hearing,
the views of some senators were cause for
concern.
“I was somewhat surprised at the energy
devoted to religious exemptions. Senator
Brandis said that their removal might lead
teachers to ‘proselytise’ their beliefs in the
classroom, which ignores that teachers are
bound to teach the curriculum,” Wilson said.
Brandis took exception to Wilson’s claim
that discriminating against intersex people for
their physical or biological characteristics was
no different to discriminating on the basis of
skin colour. During the speaking time given to
the LGBTI representatives Brandis repeatedly
left the room for long periods.
Representatives of Christian aged-care
provider Hammondcare expressed their
opposition to changes that would compel
nursing homes to accept elderly LGBTI people
and couples, but when questioned said they
would not refuse Commonwealth funding if
the law passed.

The Lord Mayor’s office assured Twenty10
in a letter that the views expressed at the event,
where one of Chedid’s advisors asked the
group to take down a banner the Mayor’s office
deemed “offensive,” were not those of the Lord
Mayor or his staff. He also praised the work
Twenty10 does in the Parramatta area and
extended an invitation to discuss the matter.
On Saturday January 19, Twenty10 left the
‘Rediscover the River’ festival in Parramatta
after the request was made, as the incident left
staffers and young people feeling unwelcome
and unsafe.
The banner advertised Twenty10 as offering
“support services for gay, lesbian, transgender,
same-sex attracted and gender diverse young
people” and displayed the Twenty10 website
address.
Twenty10 acting managing director Terence
Humphreys said the organisation was “thrilled”
at the apology and the support Twenty10
received from the community.

“It was really the young people online who
shared our initial post who sparked everything
off. People have been just outstanding,”
Humphreys said.
Twenty10 intends to take up the Lord
Mayor’s invitation to request that Parramatta
Council staff undergo training on sexuality and
gender discrimination issues.
The apology comes after Parramatta City
Council faced a storm of criticism from people
outraged over the incident. An online petition
demanding the Lord Mayor’s office issue
an apology received over twelve thousand
signatures in the days after the altercation.
In a statement released the Monday following
the incident Parramatta Council emphasised
that “at no stage did the Lord Mayor or council
staff ask Twenty10 to quit their participation
at the event” and claimed they had received
numerous complaints about the banner.
Independent Parramatta councillor and
former Lord Mayor Paul Garrard defended the
council’s actions, calling Twenty10 a “semipolitical” group and insisting that they “should
not have been there,” despite having been
invited by the council.
“Whether one is for or against the issues
the gays were pushing on that occasion, that
was not the place to be doing it,” Garrard told
Fairfax Media.

Pride March packs a
punch
Well Well Well
with ADAM HYNES
Victorian AIDS Council
At this year’s Midsumma Carnival Health Minsiter
David Davis announced that Melbourne will
be the first city to run a standalone rapid HIV
test project. This news comes on the back of
the Therapeutic Goods Administration’s recent
approval of a rapid HIV testing device. This
news has been welcomed by many within the
community. Individuals, groups and organisations
alike see this as a key step forward in being able
to curb HIV transmission rates.
Rapid HIV tests have been used in developed
and developing countries around the world for
years.
The tests, either an oral mouth swab or a
finger prick, provide a quick and less invasive
method of identifying whether someone is HIV
positive.
As the test result can be returned within 2030 minutes rapid HIV testing removes some of the
barriers to accessing traditional HIV testing, such
as time spent at the doctors, the costs associated
with attending the GP clinic and the number of
times you have to go to get tested. For example, a
sexually active gay male may have to attend a GP
clinic up to eight times a year for HIV and sexual
health checkups and results alone.
The introduction of a rapid HIV project will
make HIV testing easier and more convenient.

Acting Equal Opportunity Commissioner
Karen Toohey has said Victoria still has along
way to go on homophobic and transphobic
harassment just days before the state’s annual
Pride March.
The parade, organised by Pride March
Victoria, falls this Sunday, February 3 and
kicks off from 2pm along Fitzroy St, St Kilda.
Hundreds of community members are
expected to march for the 17th annual Pride
March, which will be led by openly gay AFL
footballer Jason Ball and his Yarra Glen team
mates.
The ENUF Campaign, combatting stigma
against HIV-positive people will be marching,
as will the new March with Pride group that is
inviting anyone not aligned to a group to join
and march with.
The acting commissioner said that
while we have come a long way in tackling
homophobia in Victoria, we have a lot of
work left to do.
“Many GLBTIQ people still have to
deal with homophobic or transphobic
harassment or verbal abuse and many have
been physically attacked, just for being who
they are,” Toohey said.
Pride March is Victoria’s most visible
LGBTI event, she said, and is a demonstration
of community acceptance as well as a
celebration of diversity.
Toohey added the parade was also an
opportunity to highlight the widespread
discrimination still faced by the queer
community.
“We look forward to marching with
Jason and No to Homophobia to spread the
message of acceptance and understanding
and to get the message out that there is no
room for homophobia and intolerance in our
society,” she said.
No to Homophobia Campaign coordinator
Daniel Scoullar said the march sent a strong
signal out to the wider community.
“Pride March is the loudest and most
visible statement by Victoria’s sex and gender
diverse community that we are here and that
we have a right to be here,” he said.
“The No to Homophobia Campaign
is proud to bring together groups like the
Commission, community leaders like
Jason Ball and our thousands of members
and supporters to reject homophobia,
transphobia, biphobia and the physical and
psychological harm they cause. There’s no
place for them anywhere in society.”

Melbourne Ports residents are urging
local federal MP Michael Danby to pledge
his support for gay marriage ahead of the
upcoming Victorian Pride March on Sunday,
February 3.
Last month, the Star Observer reported
Melbourne Ports residents were frustrated
over the MP’s decision to abstain on last
year’s September 19 vote in the Lower House
on same-sex marriage.
Melbourne Ports resident Tony Pitman,
who has started a local community
group called Melbourne Ports Residents
for Marriage Equality, said constituents
genuinely felt betrayed.
“There is now a strong feeling of discontent
brewing in his electorate,” Pitman said.
“But we thought, with the Pride March
coming up on February 3, this would be a
perfect opportunity for Michael Danby to
turn the situation around.”
Pitman said the MP would be welcomed
with open arms to this year’s Pride March if
he pledged to vote for gay marriage legislation
in the future.
“Otherwise, I think if he joins the march
without having changed his position, people
are going to see that as the height of hypocrisy.
He’ll probably be greeted with a mixture of
indifference and resentment.”
Melbourne Ports Liberal candidate Kevin
Ekendahl said the MP had some explaining
to do.
“When he had the opportunity to
make a stand and fight for equality he was
conspicuously absent, he has to explain why
he abstained from the vote when he had an
opportunity to make a difference,” he said.
The gay Liberal candidate supports samesex marriage and has said he was actively
pursuing a full conscience vote on the issue
within the Liberal Party.
Danby was one of 10 MPs to abstain,
although half of them were either overseas or
could not vote.
Victorian Labor MPs Rob Mitchell, Martin
Ferguson and Anna Burke joined Danby in
abstention although Burke could not vote as
the House Speaker.
Out of Labor’s 22 MPs representing
Victorian electorates, only Prime Minister
Julia Gillard, Mike Symon, Kelvin Thomson,
Maria Vamvakinou and Anthony Byrne voted
against the law change.
Danby’s office did not respond to the Star
Observer’s request for comment.

Sex survey “needs to

Working out where, in the many identity sub
groups of the LGBT community, people fit can be
confusing, for some it can be important to know
this while for others they are “just me”.
This often becomes an issue when signing up
for LGBT dating sites or social media - femme,
butch, bi/curious, queer, lipstick, sporty. Many
people get unstuck here by confusing identity
with gender expression.
Not every masculine looking woman is
‘butch’ and attracted to ‘femmes’, some people
are attracted to opposites and some to those
who are like them.
Identity is a very personal thing and only the
individual can decide on how they identify, and
this may or may not be in direct correlation to
how they present or the type of person they are
attracted to or engage in sex or relationships
with.
Remember only you can decide on your
identity and labels are for jars.

A new survey commissioned by the Queensland
Health Department into the sexual health of
men who have sex with men (MSM) appears
to be raising more questions than it intends on
asking.
The ‘Sexual Health Study’ is being conducted
by a private research firm, Enhance Research,
and was commissioned by the department by
request of the Ministerial Advisory Committee
(MAC) on HIV/AIDS.
“The research was ordered by the MAC to
fill in the background to recent trends in HIV
rates. The goal is to understand why rates of
unprotected sex have risen,” a spokesperson
for the Health Minister Lawrence Springborg
told the Star Observer.
“This trend has been borne out by data from
the Kirby Institute.”
A statement released by Enhance Research
said that their survey was looking at the
reasons for a five per cent increase in the rates
of men engaging in unsafe sex, with the MAC
will review the results.
However, the need for this taxpayer-funded
research and how it is being conducted has
been questioned by members of the LGBTI
community, including Healthy Communities
executive director Paul Martin.
Martin said that there were already numerous
surveys out in the community, including the
annual Gay Community Periodic Survey,
that were independently and competently
gathering data, using methods that are
internationally renowned and respected.
“[They] are all long established, universitybased research institutions with a significant
international reputation for quality HIV
research,” Martin told the Star Observer.
Martin questioned the need for another
survey, especially one that didn’t engage with
expert organisations that have been long
established and were a part of the community.
“There are still questions that we have that
research can answer, but new research needs
to be developed in partnership with service
providers and affected communities.”
Martin questioned the transparency,
independent nature and expertise of the survey
and said he would like Enhance Research
or the Health Department to release further
information regarding its methodologies,
ethics and theoretical basis.
“Will the full, uncensored research report
be available to participants and the wider
community? Will the published findings of
the research be subject to independent peer
review?” he said.

Members of the Sunshine Coast LGBTI

Sunshine Coast Pride Festival will shine
just as bright as other celebrations in the
state. Entering its fifth year, the festival is
shaping up to be the biggest yet.
Having only held a one-day festival
previously, this year’s event will take
place over three.
“Based on feedback from previous
years, people wanted different types of
events – so this year we had sufficient
funding to grow it from one event to three
events. What once was a small gathering
of people back in 2008, has now grown
to be a highly anticipated event on the
Sunshine Coast calendar that is family
friendly,” Pride committee member Paul
Ferguson said.
A film festival, bingo night and Fair
Day are on offer from February 2224 and will take place all around the
Sunshine Coast, from Nambour to
Maroochydore.
Originally held later in the year, the
2013 festival has been moved to earlier
in the year to capitalise on the holiday
period and interstate tourists travelling

Gloria was having her
own personal disasters.
Then her house flooded.
One of the most successful campaigns to
help tackle HIV/AIDS and other sexually
transmitted infections (STI) in Indigenous
and Islander communities in Queensland
has been hampered by the state health
minister’s refusal to deal with the Queensland
Association for Healthy Communities
(QAHC).
The 2 Spirits program has had a long history
of collaborating with Queensland Health but,
while it works primarily as an independent
body, it also operates in conjunction with
QAHC.
Plans for suits, comic books and other
strategies involving the program’s successful
Condoman character came to sudden
halt following Health Minister Laurence
Springborg’s announcement that QAHC
would be defunded last year, according to 2
Spirits program manager Michael Scott.
In December, 2 Spirits was informed
that direct funding to its own projects was
impossible as long as it was linked with
QAHC.
“2 Spirits was advised it would not be
funded directly and the only way it could
be would be for it to separate from Healthy
Communities. 2 Spirits investigated this and
rejected this concept,” Scott told the Star
Observer.
Instead, several efforts were made to
indirectly finance 2 Spirits by channelling
funds through a third party who would
pass those funds on to them. The health
department, through the Communicable
Diseases Branch (CDB), nominated
Queensland Positive People (QPP) and
Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health
Council (QAIHC) as the third parties and
both organisations refused to accept money
on 2 Spirits/QAHC’s behalf.
2 Spirits was informed in August last
year that Springborg declined to distribute
the character suits and comics (paid for by
Queensland Health) to 2 Spirits.
“The minister refused to allow any
resources paid for by Queensland Health
to be distributed to Healthy Communities,”
Scott said.
Springborg also refused to print comic
books that included QAHC’s logo despite
the organisation owning the copyright for
Condoman, the organisation said.
2 Spirits finally managed to obtain the suits
and comic books earlier this year.
The health minister’s office declined to
comment on the allegations.

votes for marriage
USA
The House of Representatives in the
US state of Rhode Island has voted
overwhelmingly in favour of a samesex marriage bill 51-19.
State politicians voted 51 to 19 in
favor of the bill, which would allow
anyone to marry “any eligible person
regardless of gender,” and make
Rhode Island the 10th US state to
legalise marriage equality.
Reuters reports that the legislation
is supported by independent
Governor Lincoln Chafee.
Despite being a largely Democratrun state, the bill is expected to face
stiff opposition in the state Senate
where Senate president Teresa
Paiva-Weed is opposed to same-sex
marriage.
The New York Times reports that
supporters of the bill, including the
openly gay speaker of the House
Gordon Fox, hope to capitalise
on votes in Maine, Maryland and
Washington State which approved
same-sex marriage in referendums
last November.

“This would mean there would

The unbearable truth
ride the slug
with Benjamin riley

against the glass
with JESSE MATHESON
@Jesse_Matheson
Can you believe it’s been almost two years since I began
writing this column? How the time flies, but alas it is
time for this column to come to an end.
It’s a new year and I couldn’t think of a greater time
to hang up my columnist hat and spread my wings than
now.
This column was originally created to give a youth’s
perspective of the gay world, although I felt that to be
restricting so I chose to write about issues that matter,
issues that people really cared about... mostly.
Looking back, I can happily say that this has been a
growing experience and that many of my views have
changed, although some have not.
Bears will be happy to know I’m no longer opposed to
body hair, in fact I’ve even embraced my ‘otter-ness’ to
an extent.
Against The Glass was an allusion to my muse Hunter
S. Thompson who was once said to write like he was
watching life through a glass window, only he would get
to a point where he’d just smash the window and work it
into the story somehow.
I chose him as my inspiration because he was a man
who knew the power of the word and the dangers of
telling the truth.
I promised myself that I wouldn’t lie or try to save face
like so many do, instead I only wanted to tell the truth
and I like to think I achieved that.
“Absolute truth is a very rare and dangerous
commodity in the context of professional journalism,”
Thompson once said, and so I’ll leave you with this:
If I’ve learnt anything from writing for this community
it’s that we are a splintered and truly divided people.
We come from so many walks of life and
backgrounds, but when we meet our worlds collide and,
when they do, we bicker.
This bickering chips away at that fragile pane of
glass that we call our community and I fear that unless
we make a conscious decision to really listen to one
another, to respect each other and to move forward as a
collective, we run the real risk of losing this community
forever.
There is so much anger, hatred and pain in this
community, but there is so much love too, and now more
than ever it’s that love which we need to focus on.
A couple of years ago I worked on the Star
Observer’s guide to Southern Hibearnation,
a week of events in June that attracts bears
and their admirers from around the world to
Melbourne.
Despite my attempts to remain
professionally distant I fell in love with the
bear community. I might be a very lanky twometres tall with minimal body hair and a sad
inability to grow a beard, but I knew I had
found my home. I needed to get out of the
house, pull on some Blundstones and replace
that longing deep inside me with a bear.
My quest for ursine acceptance earned
me the nickname “Goldilocks” from my
editor and daily emails containing images of
shirtless, hairy-chested men from everyone
else. I started going to bars frequented by
hirsute homos, hoping my flannelette shirt
might distract from the fact that I was in no
way a paragon of bearishness.
It didn’t. Standing about a foot above
a sea of beards, shaved heads and barrelchests, I knew I could never be a bear.
Two weeks ago I wrote a column
about damaging ideals of male beauty in
the gay community. A recurring theme in
comments from bears was the fact that the
bear community doesn’t hold up that same
ideal—tanned, muscled perfection is not
what bears are about.
I want to believe this represents a shift
towards accepting physical diversity, but
As a bear aesthetic continues to influence
particularly young, alternative gay male
culture through events like Melbourne’s
Trough parties, I find myself once again
on the outside looking in. But maybe I’ll
get lucky. Maybe in 10 years the tide
will turn again, and the ideal guy will be
goofy-looking, two-metres tall, lanky and
man-boobed.
I can’t help thinking the bear community
has just replaced one physical ideal with
another. I don’t fit either of them. Of course
the bear community should be praised for
appreciating bigger bodies, but I’m not
muscled or skinny, I’m not hairy or bulky
or burly, and while I’m not very camp, few
would describe me as masculine.

I wear men’s cologne. While my mum thinks
that’s weird, I know I’m not alone. Heaps of
queer girls do. I’m sure some straight girls
do too.
I wear it because I think it smells nice.
I can remember liking the way dad smelt
when he applied fresh, peppery aftershave
in the mornings when I was little, more than
the floral perfumes my mum wore. So now
that’s what I choose to spray on before work
each day.
But it occurred to me recently how nuts
it is that there are separate men’s and
women’s fragrances. I mean, who made that
call? I get it with clothes because we’re built
differently, but my boobs certainly won’t be
squashed by Bvlgari’s Pour Homme.
Smells don’t have a gender. Someone
just decided to market them that way. It
extends to deodorant, body lotions, shower
gel, shaving cream and almost anything we
apply to our bodies. Some are his and some
are hers.
Girls get sugar and spice and all things
nice, whereas boys get fresh, bold, earthy
aromas to squirt onto their hairy caveman
necks.
It’s really quite silly when you think about
it. But no more silly than the traditional blue
or pink packaging used to signify which
gender these products are being sold to.

out of the fact that it was the first fragrance

Why can’t they be like Freddo Frogs where

Torch Song still Harvey’s finest
Penned by US actor and playwright Harvey
Fierstein more than 30 years ago, Torch
Song Trilogy is now considered one of
the classics of modern gay theatre. The
three-act play, detailing the life and times
of a New York drag queen named Arnold
Beckoff in the early ‘80s, returns to the
Australian stage next month as part of the
Sydney Mardi Gras Festival. We spoke to
director Stephen Colyer about his decision
to resurrect this queer classic.
The play’s final act sees Arnold grappling with a new role as a single father
- it must have been quite a groundbreaking representation of gay life.
There were very few instances of gay
people electing to have children when the
show premiered. There were other areas
of discrimination that were more pressing.
Children tended to feature only if someone
had been previously in a heterosexual marriage. However, Arnold is unsinkable. Even
though he has a strained relationship with
his mother, the example of his parents is an
inspiration to him.
What made you decide to stage Torch
Song Trilogy at this year’s Mardi Gras?
I was excited by 2013 marking the 30th
anniversary of the play’s success in winning
the Tony Award and Drama Critics awards
for Best New Play. Harvey Fierstein won
for Best Actor in a play as well. I have
always had an obsession with the material
and hoped to direct it one day. Mardi Gras
Festival seemed the opportune time to do
this collection of three short plays - it’s a
significant festival event and deserves to be
seen with a sense of occasion.
Arnold is such a pivotal character in
the play - was it a hard role to cast?
It was very tough to cast and I am
ecstatic that Simon Corfield agreed to come
on board. A friend of mine said it best when
he pointed out that Arnold is the Hamlet of
gay theatre. The journey he goes on with
the audience has an immense dramatic
range. He is almost never off stage so the
audience has to enjoy his company. He
needs to be funny in one moment and heart
breaking in the next. Thankfully, Simon
delivers in every respect.
Do you view Torch Song Trilogy more
as a historical piece, or do you think
there’s relevance to be found for
today’s queer audiences?
The humanity and humour written into the
story are timeless. It’s a story for anyone who
ever had a dream and held a torch for that
dream to come true against the odds. In the
case of Arnold, his dream is to find love and
create a family of his own. When the play
premiered, Harvey Fierstein was vilified by
sections of the gay community for claiming
gay men wanted to ape conservative family
values. Today, the next step towards equality
is the right to marry and raise children, so
Torch Song Trilogy was ahead of its time.
The play continues to make a strong argument for why gay relationships are the same
as any other and deserve equal respect.
Are there any particular challenges
with this show for you, as the director?
Casting was the most difficult part;
finding all the right pieces of the puzzle to
compliment one another. It is extraordinary
that I managed to assemble such an incredible cast of actors but also that they are
knock out musicians and singers - which
adds a surprising and thrilling dimension
to the show. The very fact that so many
wonderful people wanted to be involved,
including Amanda Muggleton, is testament
to the brilliance of the material. Not to
mention the sensational Phil Scott who has
done all the musical arrangements so the
Torch Songs are all gems.

Why do you think Torch Song Trilogy is
regarded as such a classic?
The truths are universal. Everyone wants
to be loved and respected for our true
selves. Anybody who has ever heard of
Cinderella hopes for a happy ending, but
for most of us, it ain’t smooth sailing. And
Arnold has such a unique view of the world:
he has the wry humour of a survivor. He
is able to argue on behalf on anyone who
ever felt they were being treated as less
than equal because of their sexuality and
he does it with tremendous passion and
sidesplitting wit.

Bridging the generation gap

NICK BOND
Melbourne director Mark Pritchard makes his
Red Stitch directorial debut next week helming
4000 Miles, an Australian premiere by acclaimed
American playwright Amy Herzog.
The play focuses on the relationship between Vera
(veteran actor and Red Stitch guest Julia Blake), a
91-year-old Jewish communist, and Leo (Tim Ross),
her 21-year old grandson, as the pair attempt to live
together in her New York apartment.
“Its a wonderful piece of writing to be debuting
with - sharp, probing, warm without being naive. It’s
an incredibly intimate portrait of a fascinating woman
in the final years of her life, and as I read it I realised
how little I know about my own grandmother. So I
connected with Leo, the young anarchist at the heart
of the play, as he reconnects with his grandmother as
if for the first time,” Pritchard told the Star Observer.
“As a queer guy in my 20s I’ve been asking myself
a lot of questions about what a family looks like and
what’s holding us back as a society when it comes to
embracing the changing nature of the family.”
The premise of the play - a young grandson and
his elderly grandmother thrust together in close
confines - could read as ‘just’ another odd couple
comedy, but Pritchard said Herzog never goes for
easy laughs.
“The play is hilarious in that dry New York nobullshit style. Amy Herzog is clearly a lefty with a
real irreverence in her love for her family, and she’s
18
interested in taboos within family relationships, so
the funniest points of this play are actually when we
hit those danger zones. The humour... reveals the
instability of family in a culture where everyone’s
trained to look after themselves.”
Although Pritchard said he didn’t consider
Herzog was trying to impart a message to audiences
about the way we interact with older generations
(“A message? Gross!”), he said 4000 Miles definitely
stirred up some confronting issues around aging.
“[It looks at] what our society does when we get old
- once you stop buying iPhones you’ll be put out to
pasture, and that’s definitely a contemporary cruelty
that we’ve allowed to happen. I work with a Thai
migrant woman, and she’s continually horrified by
the way we treat older people in this country. She’s
here working her hands to the bone to send money
back to support her aging parents, while we’re trying
to avoid ours at Christmas without getting kicked out
of the will.”
On the contrary, Pritchard revealed he was entirely
smitten with his older leading lady.
“The most surprising aspect of the collaboration
has for me been how hungry [Julia Blake] is, how
curious. Julia isn’t just chalking up another notch on
her belt, she is infatuated with the play and wants to
leave no stone unturned.
“I’m never working with anyone else ever again!”

Jessie Ware: ‘I try to be a classy bird’
>> MUSIC
NICK BOND
It’s been just under a year since UK soul singer
Jessie Ware first hit the scene with her stunning,
Sade-esque debut single Running, and since that
time - in subsequent singles, videos, and across her
phenomenal debut album Devotion - she’s emitted
a carefully cultivated aura of class and poise.
“Just as you’ve said that I’m poised, I’ve spilled water
all over me,” she cackled, speaking to the Star Observer
over the phone of this week’s Australian visit.
“To be honest, that’s not me at all. I try to be a
classy bird, but I’m clumsy, I’m cheeky and I talk far
too much.”
Devotion made its way to many critics’ bestof-2012 lists, thanks in no small part to Ware’s stirring
breakthrough single Wildest Moments. Casting
aside the subdued feel of earlier releases, this was
Ware at her most emotional: singing from the heart
in a lighters-aloft power ballad worthy of Whitney
Houston.
“It definitely felt like a breakthrough, because
I could watch it extend beyond that left-of-centre
indie world. I mean, bloody Katy Perry tweeted it,
which was so sweet of her,” Ware said.
While the song reads as an ode to a passionate
love affair, Ware actually wrote it about the rocky
relationship she shares with her best friend Sara.
“It came out of a fight with Sara, who actually now
I’m a bit worried about. I’ve talked about the story
behind the song in interviews, and it really hurt her
feelings. She loves the song, but I feel guilty talking
about it,” she admitted.
As you may have guessed, the 28-year-old
Londoner was raised on a steady diet of quality soul
music.
“I’ve always been a real soul and R&B fan, but I
always feel like I’m learning more about old R&B that
I didn’t even know about. I can’t get enough R&B I’m loving the new Brandy album at the moment.”
Speaking of Brandy, Ware recently teamed up
with fellow Brit music darling Katy B for an ultra
smooth duet that tips its hat to Brandy and Monica’s
1998 classic The Boy Is Mine.
“We’ve always joked that we should do a ‘Boy Is
Mine’ song. Out of the blue, Katy got in touch and
told me she’d written a song she described as a new
Jolene. It worked out so easily and naturally because
we get on so well.”
The song takes on further significance given its
title, Aaliyah, is a nod to the groundbreaking R&B
singer who died in a 2001 plane crash aged just
22. Despite leaving behind only three albums, she
inspired a new generation of female singers, Katy
and Jessie included.
“I just thought it was genius of Katy. I loved the
fact that it was a nod to this late R&B great who’d
definitely have no trouble taking your man away. If
you had to have anyone steal your boyfriend, it may
as well be Aaliyah.”

DOLLY’S 9-5
GUIDE
Dolly ’s 9-5 with Dolly Diamond Hi everyone,
Lovely to have your company once again.
I’ve had such a good time of it recently and it doesn’t
look like life is about to slow down anytime soon. It’s
Pride March on Sunday in Melbourne and I’ll be showing
my multi-coloured face to everyone. It’s a chance for
all the various community groups to get the flags and
banners out and to march with pride in your heart.
Don’t forget, you lot, that I’m always looking for
something happening out your back door, just send me
an e-mail.
~Dolly
Out Cairns’ Retro Party
Buddha Bar
Mardi Gras Fair Day
Sydney
Hair: The Musical
Melbourne
The team behind Out Cairns are back with another
monthly party and this time the theme is Retro.
They are always well attended as it’s only a
monthly event. I’ve done a few of them and they go
down a treat.
It’s all happening at the Buddha Bar and after the
controversial New Year’s Eve party, this one has a
lot to live up to - but fear not I’ve seen the DJ lineup and there’s a few other surprises in store if I know
Out Cairns.
Retro: “A style from the recent past”. Ring your
Mum and Dad.
It’s almost time for Fair Day again and it’s going to be a
big one by all accounts.
Well why not, as it’s really the official launch of
Mardi gras and has crowds of around 70,000.
It’s a real mix of the whole community too and
Victoria Park comes alive.
Once again the dogs will be let out for the dog
show Doggywood and it’s the perfect way for your
pampered pooch to feel like even more of a celebrity.
There are performances throughout the day and you
may even see the odd drag queen or king.
Dress to impress or for comfort - it’s up to you - but
Mrs and Mrs Fair Day will be crowned on the day, so
there’s no reason that you couldn’t be hot stuff.
Midsumma still keeps on rockin’ with shows
like Hair only just recently opened.
It’s the musical that shocked audiences
back in the late ‘60s and tells the story of a
group of hippies who live in New York and fight
conscription to the Vietnam war.
It also has plenty of sex, drugs and rock’n’roll,
so I’m going.
It has some great music with songs such as
Aquarius, Let the Sunshine In and I Got Life.
The cast is extremely good and the vocals are
top notch. Chapel off Chapel will come alive. Look
out for the nude scene but remember it’s rude to
stare... or take pictures.

Gays take a punt at
Rainbow Cup
Calling out for
rookies
>> RUGBY
>> AFL
Ever wanted to try out rugby and live in
Melbourne?
The Melbourne Chargers rugby side
is offering newcomers a chance to get a
taste of rugby union and the Chargers at
their Rugby 101 day.
The team will give a brief introduction
to the fundamentals to the sport, run
some basic drills and introduce the
rookies to the team’s current players,
coaches and managers.
A ‘team building’ activity will follow
with a presentation about the team’s
history and future plans and round off
with a question-and-answer session for
the new players.
A casual BBQ and drinks will wrap up
the no-strings-attached day.
Last year, the Chargers travelled to the
Bingham Cup in Manchester, UK for their
first international tournament.
The Bingham Cup is an international
rugby tournament for international gay
rugby teams.
The Chargers Rugby 101 day is on
Saturday, February 2 at Victory Square,
Armadale from 1pm.

FUN RUN: The Little Black Dress Run raises money for kids living with HIV/AIDS and
their families. Photo: John McRae
Head for the heels
>> RUNNING
On February 23, Centennial Park will once again echo to the sound of clattering high
heels as Sydney Frontrunners host their 13th annual Little Black Dress Run. The
run raises urgently needed funds for Sydney Children’s Hospital’s Camp Goodtime,
which supports kids living with HIV/AIDS and their families. Hostess Joyce Maynge
and Sydney 2000 Olympic medallist Ji Wallace will take part in the event this year.
For more details on the run and on how to sign up or donate, visit: facebook.com/
littleblackdressrun
Gay and gender diverse Victorians will
give Aussie Rules a go later this year at an
inaugural Rainbow Cup.
Organisers have said it was likely to be held
in the second half of this year and that there
would be two matches, with one for men and
one for women.
The No To Homophobia Campaign,
Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human
Rights Commission (VEOHRC) and Team
Melbourne are behind the event.
Openly gay country AFL player Jason
Ball will be playing in the matches and also
promoting the event.
It is being modelled off the successful
Harmony Cup which has run for multicultural
teams.
The coalition of local organisations is also
working with Global Footy who has organised
the Harmony Cup for the past five years.
No to Homophobia campaign coordinator
Daniel Scoullar said the Rainbow Cup was
an important step in making Aussie Rules
football a safe and inclusive sport – and
one where LGBTIQ people can participate
equally as players, coaches, volunteers and
supporters without fear of harassment,
discrimination or abuse.
“Homophobia, biphobia and transphobia
need to be seen as critical public health
issues that do huge harm to people’s physical
and psychological health,” he said.
“In a ‘sports mad’ country like Australia,
sports administrators and players have the
power to reduce this harm by changing the
culture of their sports from the inside-out.
“The rest of us have a responsibility to get
involved and show the broader community
that we love sport and insist on our place
on the field, in the club rooms and in the
stands.”
Since 2010, Victoria’s Equal Opportunity
Commission has been working with sporting
clubs, specifically hockey, to promote safer
spaces for the LGBTI community.
They have even successfully introduced
the pro-gay sports initiative into a local high
school.
Overseas media reports show a growing
number of popular sports stars throwing
their support behind pro-gay messages and
urging any ‘closeted’ gay sports stars to reveal
their sexuality.
Rainbow Cup organisers are looking for
players, volunteers and supporters to pitch in
for the cup.
