Supporting School Board and District Goals The Foundation is strongly committed to the District’s mission of “Strengthening Our Community Through Excellence in Education.” To that end, the Foundation board has elected to track our performance and align our funding priorities to the four school board goals that guide the District’s ongoing improvement efforts. Supporting each goal, the board has identified specific performance measures to focus our efforts. The Foundation is proud to be supporting 22 of these 28 performance measures as represented in 3 the info graphic. Innovation was in full swing this year as the students at Woodinville High School and Timbercrest Junior High School put 3D printers to work creating all sorts of innovative things. Thanks to a generous donor, Woodinville High School received funds to purchase an industrial grade printer which elevated the course work and level of education for the students in Computer Aided Design. This real world tool exposed them to skills that are transferable to hundreds of in-demand jobs, and they are graduating better prepared to fill an industry gap. As part of our innovative classroom grants this year, Timbercrest students were granted resources to purchase and build parts and filament to build two 3D printers, using the existing 3D printer at their school. TJH computer science students will build and maintain 3D printers to explore developments and approaches to 3D printing. This project will also increase access to printers and provide state of the art industry-level experience for junior high students. Investing in Math Olympiad Adds Up Math Olympiad is an evening math program for 5th and 6th graders, designed to increase student interest in math and stimulate and challenge young scholars in mathematical pursuits. This hands-on club builds belonging and increases student confidence throughout the year. The Math Olympiad program at each elementary school culminates in a district-wide competition – Northshore Elementary Math Olympiad, or NEMO - that’s sponsored by the Northshore 5 Schools Foundation. More than 400 students compete in NEMO every year. Northshore Schools Foundation 2014-2015 Annual Report STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering & Math Project Lead the Way/ Advanced Bio Med I’d like to thank Northshore Schools Foundation Institute for Systems Biology and its many donors for the support it has lent to the Thanks to the Northshore Schools Foundation grant, Hollywood Hill was able to implement this STEM curriculum. For several months, students have been involved in our STEM water unit. First we built background on the science of water by asking questions about the properties of water and conducting investigations. Using the district FOSS science kits, students investigated the properties of water using an inquirybased approach. Presently, we are in phase two, engineering with water. That is, we are learning the engineering process and what we understand about water to creatively engineer technology that will help solve problems dealing with polluted water. Next month, we start the final and most rigorous stage of our water unit of study. The students will work on a problem/project-based action investigation. The students will identify a water issue in our community, use their persuasive writing skills to seek solutions and help with their chosen water issue, and ultimately fix the problem. Solving the problem will require them to research, write, go outside the classroom and into the community, interview some experts, and publicize their work so a wide body of citizens becomes aware of the issue and their part in solving the problem. Following the conclusion of our water studies, we will jump into the three week long Project Lead the Way engineering unit. Finally, we end the year with a three phase, STEM unit of study on energy that will again involve science for building background, engineering, technology, and a problem/project based investigation to apply all the students’ learning. The children are so engaged and look forward to all their STEM lessons. As you can tell, STEM is multidisciplinary involving the students’ application of reading, writing, math, science, engineering, and technology skills. STEM allows us to teach the kids to use the 21st century skills of Collaboration, Communication, Creative Thinking, and Critical Thinking--the 4C’s.The students have learned to appreciate that perseverance, determination, and struggle are a regular part of thinking critically to problem solve while stretching themselves. Very sincerely, Kurt Archuleta 4th Grade Teacher 6 creation and ongoing growth of the BioMed program at Woodinville High School. My son enrolled in BioMed in his sophomore year at Woodinville in 2011. A young man that describes himself as techy + collaborative, he was never in love with the concept of sitting at a computer screen for entire adulthood. Having the experience of an in-depth biology class -using the various pieces of equipment in the BioMed classroom -- allowed him to dive into technology in an entirely different way. It was obvious before the end of the first semester that he had found his passion. Thomas participated in the onsite BioMed Exposition at Woodinville High School in 2012, then enrolled in the Advanced BioMed class in his senior year (20132014). In this class, he had the opportunity to visit many biological research institutions in the Seattle area (including the Gates Foundation) and participate in the Northwest Association for Biomedical Research’s BioExpo in 2014. Through this experience, he was in a great position to evaluate different undergraduate biology research programs, and has enrolled in one that is a great fit for him (and allows him to pursue research as early as his junior year). To top it off, at least 25% of his classmates in the Advanced BioMed class are enrolled in a biologyrelated major at their universities (from nursing to biology research to bioengineering). We can’t thank you enough for the doors your support have opened for him. Many thanks, Amy Cast Northshore Schools Foundation 2014-2015 Annual Report Career &College Readiness Health Sciences and Occupations With the demand for health care service workers on the rise, the Foundation has been paying close attention to ensuring our students are prepared to meet that need with the Health Sciences & Occupations course. This program serves 40 students and provides them with the opportunity to earn a Certificate of Proficiency and a State Nursing Assistant Certification. Over the years the Foundation has provided thousands of dollars’ worth of support through industry partnerships and funding support. This year was no exception; thanks to Evergreen Health, students received additional support for their Internet technology needs. Sports Medicine Program Similarly, the Foundation invested in curriculum enhancement and equipment refresh for this course which is based on the National Athletic Trainers’ Association six domains of responsibility/education, and the Career and Technical Education Therapeutic and Sports Medicine competencies standards. In the advanced course, students learn about the psychological aspects of sports injuries, sports nutrition, and sport pharmacology, and are required to obtain 60 hours of athletic training experience and complete a clinical internship at a local health care facility. In addition, students participate in the Washington Career & Technical Sports Medicine state competition. Students who earn a “B” or better in this course qualify for college credit through Tech Prep, a dual-enrollment program that provides high school students with opportunities to earn college credit in their high school career and technical education classes without leaving 7 their high school campus. “I am so thankful Woodinville High School provided me the opportunity to be part of the Health Careers class of 1988. This program offered real-life, clinical experiences that are unique to find for someone of high school age, and therefore, stimulated my passion to become a nurse. My career in nursing has been incredibly fulfilling. I praise the Northshore Schools Foundation for funding the Health Careers program... directly providing our youth guidance and excellence for the future.” - Joan Karelsen Glenn WHS 1988 Northshore Schools Foundation 2014-2015 Annual Report Career &College Readiness Real world connections make a difference for students Leota & Timbercrest combined their efforts in support of future Woodinville High School students exploring potential career paths. This awesome one-of-a-kind pilot program allows 7th graders from both schools to come together for a Leadership Day, where the focus is social and emotional growth and in building an accepting community within the high school pathway and beyond. 8th & 9th graders combine for a career day that shares resources and exposes students to not only their future high school classmates, but to career representatives from every career cluster as well. The Foundation was a proud supporter of this inaugural effort and looks forward to seeing where it goes from here. Experiential Learning in Contemporary World Issues for over 100 students at the Secondary Academy for Success. Dawn McArthur is bringing guest speakers in and taking students out to the community to make real world connections to classroom topics. Highlights include: • Classroom visits from the McKinstry Human Resources department and studying job skills (resumes, applications, and interviews) • Mock Interviews for 29 students off-site at McKinstry’s corporate office • Studying growth mindsets with guest presenters from World Vision and Lake Burien Presbyterian Church • Cultural exploration, complete with food, of China, Vietnam, Norway, and Iran This variety of experiential learning will help these students prepare for their future and understand more clearly how to be a global citizen. Innovation in the making: Piloting industry standard software in Woodinville High School robotics program MATLAB®, used by millions of engineers and researchers around the world, is a high-level language and interactive environment. It lets one explore and visualize ideas and collaborate across disciplines including signal and image processing, communications, control systems, and computational finance. It sells for thousands of dollars, but is available at a discount to educational institutions. Part of an education is to learn how to teach oneself. The package comes with videos and written tutorials, examples, and online documentation with a good search capability. The Foundation has funded one pilot, and once it’s evaluated, we’ll see if it can grow from there. 8 Northshore Schools Foundation 2014-2015 Annual Report Career &College Readiness Composites Engineering & Manufacturing The Foundation is actively working to support industry partnerships that ready graduating students for success in viable, living wage jobs of the future. In many cases, students opt to directly enter the workforce, and having relevant certifications is often the difference between getting the interview and getting the job. When an anonymous donor approached us last summer and inquired “How can I help these kids connect to jobs in industry?”, we knew just what to tell them. The District had just started a partnership with Edmonds Community College, and the Washington Aerospace Training and Research Center (WATR) is allowing students in Bothell High School’s Composites Course the opportunity to earn the Aerospace Manufacturing Core Skills certificate which will qualify them to continue toward an Aerospace Manufacturing Specialty Skills training certification. The WATR Center is demonstrating success in helping graduating students become employable with an 83% hiring rate! Of those, 86 percent of graduates are working in aerospace, and 14 percent are working for non-aerospace companies. As for our students, 16 recently attained that certification and will move on to the next set of courses. The WATR Center provides flexible hybrid training opportunities to meet the fast-paced needs of the aerospace industry. For more information about this training visit: http://washingtonaerospace.com/ Foundation donor allows 16 Northshore students to graduate career ready in the aerospace field. “Given the high unemployment rate of recent high school graduates, the partnership between Northshore and WATR provides stackable skills education that will help students obtain livable wage employment directly out of high school in an industry that will invest in their continuing education,” said Raphael Madison, Edmonds CC WATR marketing manager. 9 Far left: Raphael Madison, Edmonds CC WATR Marketing Manager and Northshore School District students. This option challenges advanced students beyond a regular high school curriculum and allows them to enter college with a few credits. Curricula like Running Start, College in the High School, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate are developed by national and international standards and, to meet course requirements, require the purchase of updated textbooks and new equipment. This year the Foundation supported these students by awarding $1,000 for the Advanced Placement Biology Curriculum at Woodinville High School to help complete the biology labs now required by the College Board. We are proud of our investment in Student Leaders Every year over 100 students participate in the Calling For Kids campaign for the Northshore Schools Foundation. These students not only learn about the importance of nonprofits in a community, but engage in service to affect others and learn some real life job training skills as well. Most of these students are representatives of ASB, Honor Society, Class Officers, DECA and FBLA. Their participation in the campaign is rewarded by a stipend paid by the Foundation to support their student organizations. We are proud to be associated with and supporters of our fiercely successful DECA and FBLA students in their pursuit of excellence in state, regional and national competitions. Last year the Foundation donated over $5000 in support of those efforts, making travel and competitions more accessible for students of all economic levels. Our First Student Scholarship Winner: Amrutha Gujjar The Northshore Schools Foundation is proud to announce Amrutha Gujjar, Woodinville High School, as the first student scholarship winner. Amrutha was the featured keynote speaker at the 2015 All in for Kids Luncheon. Amrutha Gujjar has benefited from the Foundation’s investment in programs for students at Kokanee Elementary, Leota Junior High and Woodinville High schools including support for AP Science and Computer Science courses. She is ranked in the 99th percentile in the United States as a National Merit Finalist, and she has been invited to speak both with President Obama as a part of the prestigious ALA Girls Nation Program and with the TED-Ex program regarding the future of Computer Science. Amrutha Gujjar, was one of nine applicants for the Foundation’s first ever scholarship opportunity. “We received applications representing all four of our high schools and all of the applicants were strong,” said Teri Foose, Northshore Schools Foundation Board member and Luncheon chair person. “It was such a hard decision; I wish we could have granted the scholarship to every one of them.” “Amrutha stood out as an outstanding recipient. Her academic excellence, demonstration of business acumen with FBLA, commitment to service and her passion behind computer science and innovation make her an excellent reflection of the quality of students our District is producing.” 10 Northshore Schools Foundation 2014-2015 Annual Report Teacher Excellence Investing in what works: Our Teachers The Northshore School District has some of the greatest teachers in the nation, and the Foundation is proud to support them. In 2014/2015 the Foundation invested more than $38,000 in Teacher Excellence by supporting National Board Certification (NBC) Candidates, National Board Renewal Candidates, New Teacher Professional Development and sending Physical Education Teachers to the National Shape Conference. Nearly 200 teachers were supported by the Foundation as they worked to make every effort to be the best instructors they can be. National Board Certification & New Teacher Professional Development NBC is a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize and reward great teachers--making them better. While state licensing systems establish a baseline of requirements for teachers, NBC teachers have successfully demonstrated advanced teaching knowledge, skills, and practices. NBC is the only credential process that compares a teacher’s knowledge and skills with a national set of professional standards. The New Teacher Professional Development Project provides a systematic support structure for new General Education teachers, helping them with planning and resources during their first year of teaching. Teachers receive professional resources to support District curriculum, implementation and classroom management, ensuring a successful classroom environment for our students. This important work means that teachers get the support they need to navigate the challenges of being a first year teacher, and that students feel the benefit. Under the direction of Dr. Clayton Cook, our staff across the district has implemented a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) initiative to build capacity within participating schools that can be matched to students’ individual needs. This MTSS targets “I am motivated to remember the whole child…academic, personal, and performance.” prevention, amelioration and treatment of social, emotional, and behavioral problems that interfere with academic performance, as well as the promotion of skills, strengths, and positive environments that enhance academic engagement and success. The Foundation provided $10,000 worth of funding to support this multi-year initiative. A cohort of 11 schools started in the 2013-14 school year and during “Yay! I loved this time. Well worth missing my students. Thank you! I was reminded of important ideas and strategies to use with differentiation.” the 2014-15 school year, 6 more schools will begin this journey. This comprehensive training will affect every student who is taught by the teachers on staff during this implementation. Highly capable students, supported by well-trained teachers With new legislation around serving highly capable students in their home school, there was an emergent need to provide additional training for teachers. The Foundation invested $10,000 into insuring that teachers have what it takes to support the highly capable and gifted children in their classroom. 12 “This work will guide my planning and mindset as I continue to work with all my students. I feel like I have worthwhile and purposeful tools now! Thank you so much! This was one of the most beneficial trainings I have been to!” Northshore Schools Foundation 2014-2015 Annual Report Teacher Excellence PE Teachers Getting In Shape: Society of Health and Physical Education SHAPE – National Conference in Seattle, WA. Conferences invigorate, inspire and support teacher learning but the high costs of providing sub-time, conference registration, travel and lodging often inhibit a teacher’s ability to attend. But this year, the National S.H.A.P.E. Conference was held right here in our backyard, making the opportunity more accessible. The Foundation provided financial support for sub-time for schools who requested it insuring that teachers got the opportunity to participate in this once in a lifetime opportunity. Funds invested in PE teachers impact every student at every school for years and years to come. “I am so glad I got the opportunity to attend the National Conference in Seattle! It was a once in a career chance to see so many professionals in my profession. I was able to take away so much from the conference and bring it right back to my school.” - Brigid Arsenault, Sunrise Elementary School “Thank you very much for all of your support for Physical Educators in Northshore. The Shape Convention that was held in Seattle this year had fabulous presenters and I brought back many new ideas to incorporate in my program at Maywood Hills. “ - Linda Hajjar, Maywood Hills Elementary School “Thanks so much for giving me the opportunity to attend the SHAPE America convention. There were so many wonderful sessions that have re-energized me for the future. I have used many of the new games and activities already in my class and am looking forward to using many more. It also allowed me to connect with other PE professionals, both in our district and outside. Having students who are physically fit is of paramount importance and I truly appreciate the support given by the district.” - Kelli Arrivey, Sunrise Elementary School 13 Northshore Schools Foundation 2014-2015 Annual Report Literacy Since 1995 the Foundation has provided Northshore students with hundreds of thousands of books for new teachers classrooms. Books purchased this year will come into contact with over 5000 students. An investment in books is an investment in literacy and a lifetime of learning, Cassondra W-Prutsman, Kenmore Elementary, First Grade Krista Vetterlein, Sunrise Elementary, First Grade Sarah Mani, Lockwood Elementary, First Grade Andrea Medunic, Fernwood Elementary, First Grade Ashley Faver, Frank Love Elementary, First Grade Amy Kostadinova, Kokanee Elementary, Second Grade Margie Mueller, Kokanee Elementary, Second Grade Shannon Hobbs, Shelton View Elementary, Second Grade Reesa Herr, Westhill Elementary, Second Grade Katelyn Flanigan, Woodmoor Elementary, Second Grade Jamie Moser, Fernwood Elementary, Third Grade Monica Belford, Woodmoor Elementary, Third Grade Andrew Montzigo, Fernwood Elementary, Fourth Grade Colleen McIntosh, Kokanee Elementary, Fourth Grade Ariane Trumbo, Fernwood Elementary, Fourth Grade Jennifer Sitthi, Moorlands Elementary, Fourth Grade Shawna Hill, Westhill Elementary, Fourth Grade Dylan Dentremont, Canyon Creek Elementary, Fourth Grade Michelle Scharke, Frank Love Elementary, Fourth Grade Kate Andrews, Maywood Hills Elementary, Fifth Grade Barbara Mossakowski, Woodmoor Elementary, Fifth Grade Julia Kingsbury, Moorlands Elementary, Sixth Grade Kirstin Briefs, Woodmoor Elementary, Sixth Grade 14 Classroom Libraries for new elementary teachers $14,000 awarded “I have found that kids often engage deeply with their book club books, but are often hesitant to explore new genres independently beyond their book club texts. With the sets of new books we received from the NSF grant, I was able to get kids excited about trying on these new genres in their independent reading with a lot more selection and choice than we would have had otherwise. Kids started making connections between their independent reading and their book club books, making their learning more generalizable and transferable to their own reading! Now at the start of units, I have students actually asking where they can get independent reading books for the genres we are studying.” “Midway through the school year, lots of things can change. We had a member of our team head back home to California due to a family emergency in December, and hired a new teacher to fill her space. This new teacher did not have a classroom library, and the previous teacher had taken hers with her. We know that having a robust classroom library is key to students’ growth as readers. In order to support our new teammate, we have done a bit of book sharing. Having these new books from NSF has made it easier to do this work sharing books with a colleague for their library doesn’t have to take as much away from our book collection. This is the reality of resources and logistics of teaching!” -Ryan Sharnbroich, 5th Grade, Woodmoor Elementary School Northshore Schools Foundation 2014-2015 Annual Report Literacy If you can’t read, learning is even harder. That’s why the Foundation continues to focus on students getting the reading resources they need. Two such programs funded this year include: Reading Intervention at Shelton View. Impact: 2500 students. This program provides students who are reading below standard with a selection of high quality books that interest students and meet their reading needs to help bring all students to reading standard by third grade. Pilot program of Ereader Tablet Devices at Northshore Junior High School. Impact: 2100 students. This program provides reluctant readers with digital readers and access to content that stimulates learning and provides student access to appropriate material while avoiding the stigma of reading below level which is often revealed by book covers or size of the book. This pilot program will allow the assessment of accurate costs, content management and other issues around e-readers for application to more students in the future. Students Making and Learning History Northshore Students Participate in National History Day Regional Competition Northshore schools sent 232 students to participate in the National History Day North Puget Sound Regional Competition and earned 30 invitations to the Washington State History Day competition, May 2, at Green River Community College in Auburn, Wash. Additionally, Leota Junior High School student Sigrun Payne’s project concerning women’s rights received a Best Project Award. Students from Sunrise Elementary School; Leota, Northshore and Timbercrest Junior High Schools; Northshore Networks; and Bothell and Woodinville High Schools presented their historical interpretations and projects before panels of judges. Foundation funds supported students and teachers with travel funds to regional competitions making them accessible to all. Historical Civil Rights Movement Literacy Materials at Arrowhead Elementary School. Impact: 600 students. The 6th grade civil rights movement curriculum has been expanded at Arrowhead Elementary School thanks to educator Julie Sogge who submitted for an innovative classroom grant for her school. This grant provides a comprehensive selection of fiction and non-fiction books, for all readers, aimed at increasing social thinking through the exploration of the personal narratives of people from the Civil Rights Movement. Students will apply the knowledge to current world events in the hopes of preparing them to be leaders in the future. 15 Northshore Schools Foundation 2014-2015 Annual Report Music, Health & Enrichment Since its inception the Foundation has been charged with providing opportunities to enhance and enrich educational experiences for our students. Under the direction of Northshore Schools Foundation’s Innovative Educator of the Year Robert Morgan and professional musician Robin Moxey, nearly 25% of the students at Secondary Academy for Success (SAS) have participated in this incentivebased program which has proven to improve student academic performance, improve attendance, increase self-confidence, and create an environment of creativity and mastery for students. “Our school does not have a choir. It does not have an orchestra. It does not have a jazz band, marching band, or just plain “band.” We do not receive state or local funding for any music classes. What we do have is a room full of donated guitars and drums, a willing professional collaborator in Robin Moxey, and some time on Fridays to... rock.” – Robert Morgan Students who are on track with their course work have the opportunity to participate in this music performance class where Moxey works with students to learn new instruments, practice songs they know and enjoy, write their own songs, perform in front of their peers, and even record in a studio. In addition to all of this, the music program helps develop soft skills such as teamwork and confidence, and engenders an enduring way of expression. 16 The SAS music program is completely funded by donations. Thanks to dedicated donors who have been supporting this program since its inception and new donors who attended the first concert, the Foundation was able to mobilize more than $3300 to support this program. Northshore Schools Foundation 2014-2015 Annual Report Music, Health & Enrichment The opportunity of a lifetime, and an opportunity to showcase the musical talent coming out of the school district, made real thanks to your donation. In April, the Inglemoor High School Orchestra and Wind Ensemble performed in not one, but two premiere concert halls: Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall. “Those two halls are considered among the world’s musicians to be the two premiere concerts halls in the world,” Jim Rice said. “It’s a unique opportunity to play there. We just thought this would be a really neat opportunity for the kids.” The Foundation was a proud funding partner making this trip accessible to all. Northshore Music Partners Northshore Music Partners is a group of interested parents and teachers in the Northshore School District. We are a parent-run, teacher-supported organization. Our motto is that every child in the Northshore School District should have access to a quality music education. We believe that providing access to a quality music education is a fundamental part of basic education, and is the responsibility of the community and the school district. We are dedicated to continuing the tradition of providing outstanding music education to our students. Our goal in establishing the Northshore Music Partners is to celebrate the accomplishments of our extraordinary music programs by making them visible to the community. Our music programs are recognized for their accomplishments by regional, state and national music groups and leaders. By providing information about enrollment, performances, individual and group awards, and festival participation, we hope to instill in the community a high regard for our music programs. 17 In 2014, the Northshore Schools Foundation piloted a partnership with Northshore Music Partners to expand our program delivery in health, music and enrichment. By providing insurance, administrative support and funding for musical programs, the Foundation extended its services to more than 4000 youth in 2014-15. Northshore Schools Foundation 2014-2015 Annual Report Music, Health & Enrichment Building Character & Learning Skills with Marimbas, Keyboards and Cellos Marimbas connote meaningful expression at Kokanee Under the direction of Yuh-Pye Lin, this beginning ensemble musical instrument purchased by the Foundation will allow students the opportunity to perform music and be prepared for junior high performance opportunities. Playing marimbas engages students in a meaningful music experience and provide a means for students to attain the Washington State music standards. Keyboards connect sheet music to instruments at Woodinville Under the direction of Lindsey Barske, six new 61 key portable keyboards and headphones granted by the Foundation will provide the additional keyboards needed to insure every student has the opportunity to strengthen the connection between reading music and applying it to playing an instrument. Headphones allow each student to work independently and at their own pace, building confidence and competence. If there was a cool kid in elementary band at Shelton View, Kenmore, Arrowhead and Lockwood Elementary Schools he/she might be playing a cello. There are currently 18 cellists sharing nine cellos at school and three students without access to cellos at home. Under the direction of Karen Kramer, this grant provides two additional cellos to serve the music programs at these schools. Over the lifespan of each instrument this project will fill an essential need for numerous disadvantaged students, positively build upon the existing string orchestra program, and provide a unique opportunity to the many benefits of musical instrument education for students who would otherwise have insufficient access. 18 “We have several [Musical] groups that I think would have the quality to do this if they chose… This is the norm across the district, rather than the exception. We have really good music programs in this school district.” - Ted Christensen, Director of Music “[It] seems to fit with what we wanted to do. It really is about enhancing what is going to teach the kids.” – Ted Christensen Northshore Schools Foundation 2014-2015 Annual Report Music, Health & Enrichment Healthy Youth Survey: What we know because we ask Healthy Youth Survey (HYS) is an anonymous, voluntary survey taken by thousands of public school students in 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th grades every two years. The survey covers a variety of topics related to individual and peer behavior in school and in the community, including alcohol and drug use, nutrition, fitness, mental health, school-related items and quality of life. The HYS provides a source of valuable information for schools, parents and communities to address both academic and nonacademic barriers to learning and provides our local and national partners with data to bring resources to our area and help us understand how to better support our youth to be academically successful and to develop positive lifelong health habits. The Foundation provides all the funds to administer this survey. To access the results of the survey visit: http://wwwnew.nsd.org/Page/1100 • 6th grade students report almost no use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. • Cigarette use is at the lowest level since 2002 in 6th and 12th grades, however students report an increased use of electronic cigarettes/vape pens in all grades since 2012. • Research shows that parents are the primary influence in their children’s decision to use tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. • Students report easier access to alcohol than to tobacco products. • Alcohol use in teens is at the lowest level since 2002 in all grades. • Alcohol use by 12th graders is at the lowest level since 2006; however, it remains slightly higher than the state average. • Use of prescription narcotics, e.g. OxyContin, Percocet, has not changed since 2012 at all grade levels. • Students report an increase of depressive feelings at 8th, 10th and 12th grades. • Report of bullying in the last 30 days remains the same; nearly a third of students in 6th, 8th grade report bullying and drops to 15% by 12th grade. Bullying reports by girls is significantly higher than boys in 8th and 10th grades. • Students continue to report feeling safe in our schools, and statistically higher than state level. It’s more than just a paintbrush at Shelton View This year the Foundation funded art supplies for second graders at Shelton View Elementary School. These supplies provide more than just an opportunity to create art - it builds relationships. Under the direction of Alison Thurman, students will demonstrate understanding, appreciation and respect for the use of community art tools and develop competencies and creative skills in problem solving, communication and management of time as contributing factors to lifelong learning. This program increases students’ artistic perception of relationships and applications of art which are valuable components in child development. 19 Northshore Schools Foundation 2014-2015 Annual Report Struggling Learners Fueling our students hunger for learning. Student from Northshore Networks and at Kenmore, Skyview and Northshore Junior High Schools were able to enter their tutoring time with a full stomach thanks to healthy food options funded through the innovative grant process. Under the direction of Amy Strandy, students enrolled in the Northshore Networks program received nutritional snacks during their consulting sessions and cohort classes. By giving these students access to healthy food options, this grant helps learners to have the opportunity to be able to excel academically and meet their highest potential. At Kenmore, Skyview and Northshore Junior High Schools, Fox in the Kitchen provided Hang-Time students with a cooking class which teaches proper food handling, science and team work. We are a proud partner of the Northshore Community Schools Partnership We work in partnership with other community partners to achieve the following goals: • Families are engaged to support their child’s full potential. • Students are on track for graduation and building a plan for college and career. • Students and families have opportunities to pursue their interests. • Community and school are interconnected. Your Foundation support has allowed us to provide more than $10,000 in support of Community Schools this year. Thanks to you Hang-Time, Natural Leaders and Thread & Treads are all thriving in our district. The Adult Transition Program (ATP) - Networks endeavors to include & integrate young adults (ages 18-21) with special needs into the community and assist them with Develop vocational skills leading to increased independent living. The ATP - Networks is primarily a community based, vocational training program. Students are placed in unpaid internships with local businesses based on each student’s strengths, interests, and independent skill level. This series of internships gives young adults a better understanding of their preference and potential for employment. School staff serve as job coaches. In 2014-15, the Woodinville Firefighters Benevolent fund took this program under their wing, and provided them with a full set of Emergency Supplies to insure aides and students are safe in the case of an emergency. Supporting our Homeless Students One of the most astonishing facts we deal with every year is that over 150 students are registered as homeless in our district. For these students, lacking a fixed, dependable and consistent place to sleep at night can greatly affect their ability to be successful in school. 20 The District is committed to insuring equal access to the same free and appropriate public education as provided to their permanently housed peers. With the help of funding from the Northshore Schools Foundation, homeless children and youth will have an opportunity to meet the same challenging state student performance standards and will have the same opportunity to access education and other classroom services, before and after school programs, special education, highly capable, vocational programs and tutoring as their peers. The Foundation invested more than $6,500.00 this year in support of these programs. 21 Northshore Schools Foundation 2014-2015 Annual Report Volunteers Thank you to all of our volunteers!
