Community Education
Real Lives. Real Impact. Right Here.
Throughout the pages of this brochure and throughout the year in our schools and
learning centers, stories are being told, connections are being made and knowledge
is being shared. Community Education is about building a great place to live
through experiencing educational opportunities and building relationships. We
want to see adults learning and having fun. We want to see babies and new parents
exploring together. We are an integral part of Robbinsdale Area Schools and we are
committed to providing opportunities for learners of every age. In this brochure and
in coming brochures, you will have the opportunity to meet some of the instructors,
participants and programs that make up Robbinsdale Community Education.
On the Cover: Meet Paul and Maureen Pranghofer
The bets were on as to who would catch the
most fish at a recent outing at Fish Lake.
Paul and Maureen have been making this
bet throughout their 38 years of marriage.
Both have disabilities, and their lives have
held many challenges. Through faith, humor,
commitment, hard work and determination
they serve as wonderful models of lives well
lived. They also give back to the community.
Paul teaches computer classes to adults with
disabilities and serves as co-chair of the
Advisory Council of Windows of Opportunity,
a Community Education program of
Robbinsdale Area Schools for adults with disabilities. He is also a referee for adaptive
sports in the Robbinsdale Area Schools community. Maureen is an author, singer and
songwriter of inspirational music. Her passions include writing music to help people
who are hurting, and speaking to educate people about issues related to disabilities. As
you might guess from the cover photo, Maureen won the bet that day.
Introducing Kristine Wehrkamp , the new Executive Director of
Community Education
Wehrkamp comes to Robbinsdale Area Schools
from White Bear Lake Schools, where she served
as Director of Community Education for the
past three years. Prior to that, she was St. Paul
Public Schools Adult Basic Education Program
Supervisor for eight years. Wehrkamp earned a
Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and
Management from Augustana College, and her
Master’s Degree in Adult Education from the
University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

Improvisation means making it up as you go
along. It's what jazz musicians, Drew Carey
and many other performers do in their shows.
It can help you to gain confidence and the
ability to think on your feet in your daily life,
and yes, its fun. Using experiences and stories
from your own life, you will learn simple
improvisational techniques in storytelling
and acting. These skills will help in building
confidence in public speaking, making small
talk and becoming a better listener; serving
well in both your personal and professional
life. Wear comfortable clothing that you can
move in. No experience necessary.

Warrior Monks
The Gulf War (August 2,1990 – February
28,1991), codenamed Operation Desert
Shield, was waged by the United States
and coalition forces to fight against the
invasion of Kuwait by Iraq. Iraq’s aggression
against Kuwait was met with international
condemnation by the U.N. Security Council,
and lead to the buildup of troops and defense
of Saudi Arabia, and Operation Desert Storm.
Examine the Crusades during the Middle
Ages that were called to take back the Holy
Land. Discover what happened and then
look at certain groups of religious knights,
who together are called Warrior Monks.
We will explore the Knights Templar, the
Knights Hospitaller and the Teutonic Knights
from their creation to their effects after the

The Iraq War was an armed conflict in Iraq
that consisted of two phases. The first was an
invasion of Iraq starting on March 20, 2003,
by an invasion force of the United States and
allies that led to the end of Ba'athist Iraq. It
was followed by a longer phase of fighting,
in which an insurgency emerged to oppose
the occupying forces and the newly formed
Iraqi government. Roughly 96.5 percent of the
casualties suffered by the U.S.-led coalition
were suffered during the second phase, rather
than the initial invasion. The U.S. completed
its withdrawal of military personnel in
December 2011, during the ninth year of the
war.

Probate:
Understand It; Avoid It!
Many people die without preparing important
estate planning documents. By not planning,
you risk the need to probate your estate, with
its costs, delay, public filings and possible loss
of control of the disposition of the assets you
spent a lifetime acquiring. Estate Planning
and Elder Law attorney, Elizabeth Michaelis,
will discuss the importance of planning to
avoid probate; the different ways property is
transferred when someone dies, and the reason
having a will does not avoid probate.

Thyroid, Important Things You
Need To Know
Millions of Americans suffer from low thyroid
function. Fatigue, weight gain, depression,
anxiety, arthritis, rising cholesterol levels,
foggy thinking, inability to focus, thinning
hair, skin issues, digestive problems, abnormal
blood pressure, reduced sex drive and heart
palpitations are only some of the symptoms.
In this workshop we’ll discuss: how thyroid
function can make any illness worse; the 5
things that need to be measured, but usually
aren’t; why the #1 thyroid replacement
may not be helping you, and other options; the
connection between thyroid and fibromyalgia
and joint aches and pains; foods that can
help or hinder thyroid function; commonly
misunderstood rules of how and when to take
thyroid meds; environmental triggers; and
info you need to discuss with your doctor. If
you currently take thyroid medication but are
still gaining weight and still have a variety of
symptoms, there’s more you need to know.

Curriculum Framework.
Most classes include:

Time for children to learn and interact with one another

Parent education time with a licensed parent educator

Tuition for most classes is based on a sliding fee scale with
payment plans and fee assistance available upon request.

Early Childhood
Screening
For Children Ages 3-5
All 3 to 5 year old children in
Minnesota are required to complete
an Early Childhood Screening to
determine if they need additional
support or services to prepare them
for kindergarten.
Early Childhood Screening is
a free and simple check of your
child’s vision, hearing, height,
weight and development as well
as a brief review of health history
and immunizations.
We recommend that children be
screened between their 3rd and
4th birthdays. This helps ensure
that all young children are well
equipped for learning and that
families are aware of resources
in the school and community.
The screening tools are designed
to provide a snapshot of your
child’s motor, thinking, speech
and language skills. This is not
an IQ test, achievement test or
comprehensive eye exam. The
results are based on your child’s
age at the time of the screening.
Appointments are available
Monday through Friday and take
about an hour. Call 763-504-4180
for an appointment.

News Highlights
Meet the newest members of the Robbinsdale administrative
team:
Timothy Gadson, Ph.D., Executive Director of Curriculum for Robbinsdale Area Schools,
believes “it takes an effective teacher, building lasting relationships in every classroom, every
year, delivering quality, rigorous and data-informed instruction to ensure every child graduates as
a global citizen ready for college and the world of work.”
Dr. Gadson’s extensive administrative experience includes reform and transformation efforts at
several high schools in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the Austin Independent School District in
Austin, Texas. He has also served as an Associate Superintendent with Atlanta Public Schools,
principal and assistant principal at various levels including primary, middle, high school and
alternative education in Florida’s Broward County and Palm Beach County, as well as District
Director of Secondary Education while employed with Palm Beach County School District.
Cheri Kulland, Principal at Plymouth Middle School, has experience as a principal in both
Minnesota and Wisconsin, and has worked as an administrator at Racine Unified School District
in Racine, Wisconsin, for the last eight years. “I am excited to join the Plymouth Middle School
community and staff, and enjoy working with middle school students, staff and parents,” she said.
“I look forward to guiding students into their future.”
Bridget Hall, Principal at Lakeview Elementary School, says she is delighted to join the
community where she lives and where her children are enrolled. “Two of my children previously
attended Lakeview. One is currently at Cooper, and one is heading to RMS,” Hall said. “It is
a great honor for me to join the Lakeview Team, and I look forward to serving the Lakeview
community.”
Hall’s 23 years of experience as an administrator and teacher includes serving as Principal
of Jefferson Community School in Minneapolis and Assistant Principal of Andersen United
Community School in Minneapolis. She also taught third-grade teacher in the Bahamas for three
years.
Beginning in August, you’ll find
the Adult Academic Program, the
Robbinsdale Transition Center and the
Welcome Center located in their new
home in the Crystal Shopping Center
at the Crystal Learning Center. The
43,369 square-foot space will serve
nearly 350 students, from adult students
working on academic skills or learning
English, to young adults with disabilities
transitioning from school to adult life,
and families learning English and new
job skills. You’ll also find the Welcome
Center there, introducing new residents
and recent immigrants to our school
district.
Planning for the new location started in
response to the school district reopening
a middle school at Sandburg Learning
Center in Golden Valley, the previous
site for these programs. The shopping
center location was fundamental for
Robbinsdale Area Schools when
selecting a site for the new learning
center. It’s easy to access via public
transportation, which is essential for
many of the students enrolled in the adult
academic program.
“Our Unified District Vision speaks to
implementing policies and practices that
open pathways to academic excellence
for all students,” said Robbinsdale Area
Schools Superintendent Carlton D.
Jenkins, Ph.D. “Offering these programs
in an educational setting that is more
accessible to more of these learners will
help us continue to strive for excellence
in our district.”
Frederico Rowe, Principal at Northport Elementary School, is a lover of the arts and is “excited
about the growth of Northport Elementary School and its commitment to increasing student
academic performance through the arts.”
Rowe began teaching in the DeKalb County School System in Atlanta, Georgia, as a 4th-grade
teacher. He has served as classroom teacher, model teacher, assistant principal and principal. He
most recently served as Principal of Continental Colony Elementary School in southwest Atlanta,
Georgia.
