Although Accountancy & Controlling still issued year overviews until as recently as last year describing the developments in this part of our organization, the last actual annual reports to cover the entire institute of Nyenrode date from the late eighties. Starting this year, that is to change, because the organization itself has expressed a wish to allow the outside world to catch a glimpse of our institute. Accordingly, here is an year overview that concerns the whole of Nyenrode and presents our principles, our aims, our achievements and our ambitions. 2012 was an eventful year. Firstly, we concluded the festive anniversary year of 2011-2012 in which we celebrated 65 years of Nyenrode. Moreover, the Equis accreditation- crucially important to us- was renewed at the end of 2012 for another three-year period. In addition, on campus, we opened the LEArN Center, a factory/office environment in which business employees can learn to conduct their business more smartly, more efficiently and with more focus on their clients. Another development is the partnership with Study Group, an organization that provides pre-degree courses on campus for foreign students. For the first time in years, we have re-installed the position of Dean of Campus to help create a pleasant study and work climate on campus. And, last but not least, Professor Maurits van Rooijen resigned from his position as Rector Magnificus in 2012. In recent years, he molded his vision for the future of Nyenrode clearly and advancing the university. As I only accepted this position towards the end of 2012, I cannot say that I have contributed much to the achievements described in this year overview. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the welfare of our institute in this period and I hope that this year overview will launch a new tradition that will continue for many years to come. Miša Džoljić Rector Magnificus & CEO 3 At Nyenrode, we try to make a difference, with one foot in science and the other in practice. We help people to be successful and stress that this can only be done with an eye for the bigger picture. Nyenrode is a small organization. You meet at lot of enthusiastic colleagues trying to turn ideas into success with their own expertise. Nyenrode offers opportunities. We are challenged to look beyond “That’s not my responsibility”. A good idea does not have to stay a good idea; people like to help you turn it into a successful project. Edgar Karssing (Associate Professor at the European Institute for Business Ethics) 4 The Ny enrode Trinit y – Le adership, Entrepre neurship and S te wardship Nyenrode was founded in 1946 by leading Dutch businesses – including AKZO Nobel, Philips, Unilever and Shell with the clearly stated purpose of creating a generation of new business leaders who were of action with an international orientation. Its original name was Het Nederlands Opleidings-Instituut voor het Buitenland (NOIB - the ‘Dutch Business Institute for Overseas’). The vast majority of the bright young men passing through its gates were sent abroad to work for companies that were Dutch based, but with an international focus and drive. This background is still evident in our current mission statement: Nyenrode’s mission is to fill the need of the national and international business community for high quality and sustainable leaders and entrepreneurs, knowledge and innovative ideas. Nyenrode’s mission is also embraced in the three core values Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Stewardship (the LES trinity). These values go back to Nyenrode’s roots and have been embedded in our identity since our foundation. This trinity guides all activities at Nyenrode. •Leadership is the ability to take the lead in any circumstance; to inspire others and to change their behavior to the benefit of all. Leadership requires recognition of the beliefs, values and needs of the followers. •Entrepreneurship is the ability to successfully pursue opportunities in an innovative way. It requires a mindset open to innovation and risk-taking in order to remain competitive in an ever-changing marketplace. •Stewardship makes the difference between good and ineffective leadership and entrepreneurship by adding a sense of responsibility and care to our activities. Stewardship concerns the moral compass: what you do should reflect what the system in which you work/study needs. Stewardship is built on corporate responsibility, sustainability and integrity, bringing social and environmental issues to the business agenda. People who embrace the concept of stewardship are working for the common interests of the community. Embedding Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Stewardship means, in addition to building (evidence based) knowledge – the core competence of a university -, a focus on the personal skills, attitudes and characteristics of participants in our programs. 5 We are aiming to be a global university recognized for the integration of leadership, entrepreneurship and stewardship. This ambition has important consequences for the main functions of our business school: • We remain open to new perspectives and insights! Our education is fundamentally based on an understanding of how business is part of society and what kinds of changes are needed in order to achieve a sustainable business economy. This contradicts many unquestioned assumptions about current business life. Therefore, we will continuously improve our education as well as state of the art research to gain the latest insights into developments in business. • We will engage, challenge and inspire! Many students and participants in our programs already have a strong sense of social values and personal convictions. In our educational programs, we can build on this awareness by inspiring them, showing how important these values are also – or maybe even particularly – in a business context. This requires innovative approaches to engage, challenge and inspire students with respect to their personal development as well as involving alumni in our current activities. We want to create a positive impact! • The impact of studying at Nyenrode is not limited to the educational and research activities themselves: It is a reward for life! And the impact we have is also not limited to the communities in and around Nyenrode: we aim for educating global citizens. This year overview is structured in accordance with these distinct topics. In each chapter we shall present the results so Far. We also focus on the main challenges and some of the highlights achieved in 2012 or in the academic year 2011-2012. Nyenrode: A Reward for Life To be a high quality, trend-setting and internationally relevant university that is reputed for the integration of Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Stewardship Remain open to new perspectives Responsible education Research and publications Engage, challenge and inspire Personal development in all our programs Alumni involvement 6 Create positive impact Reducing environmental impact Local and global communities Resp onsible educ ation Our vision In recent years, our society faced the most severe financial crisis since the great depression. People question the morality of business schools for this crisis too. The business schools are sometimes said to have focused too much on students’ short-term thinking. Therefore, it is very important that we reveal our progress in the education of our students and the development of their long-term views. That is why stewardship is a key element within our core values. Stewardship is actually not a new core value as it was already integrated with the university from the beginning. For example, Nyenrode created the first Chairs in Business Ethics and in Business Spirituality in Europe. We believe students should be educated to be independently thinking creatures. Nyenrode is not just a university but an educational institute that helps to shape the balance between body and mind. Stimulating students to question things and encouraging them to walk the path towards solutions together. The future is not known, therefore, we need to provide students with the equipment to help them to make the right decisions. A good example of this is our emphasis on ‘The Robust Professional’, who is able to confront difficult circumstances and still stand firm. We make sure that all our educational policies are in line with the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME). In the past academic year, two students of the Part Time MSc program examined the integration of the LES trinity with each educational program at Nyenrode. Their study shows that all programs have started dialogues with students about what the values of Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Stewardship mean to them and have linked the end terms of the program to the LES trinity. In most programs, there are also dedicated courses on leadership, entrepreneurship and stewardship and some programs like the BBA and MSc in Management have achieved the integration of these values into every course. Nyenrode educates its students to be global citizens and leaders who can make a difference in the future as unknown problems arise. Not only do our students come here to learn, they strive to evolve as humans and as social beings. These students regard studying at Nyenrode and becoming part of Nyenrode’s network as the most important steps in their career. Moreover, it is clear that the companies and organizations that employ our students greatly appreciate this spirit and accordingly the new corporate campaign focuses on this message. This campaign targets our most important stakeholders: the students, showing them how impressive the path is to becoming part of the Nyenrode community; it is not always an easy one - in fact, it is often a very tough road to walk. But it is worth the effort, which is why we say ‘A reward for life!’. 7 This is a list of our degree courses. degree programs program director Bachelor of Science in Accountancy Olof Bik Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) Ben Wijering, Timo Timmerman & Gert Meijer Master of Science in Controlling Jan Bots Master of Science in Accountancy & Post Master RA Olof Bik Executive Master of Finance and Control (EMFC/RC) Jan Bots Master of Science (Part-time) Ger Zwartendijk Master of Science (Full-time) André Nijhof International Master in Business Administration (IMBA) Désirée van Gorp Executive Master in Business Administration (EMBA) Désirée van Gorp Modular Master in Business Administration in Food & Finance (MBAFF) Marcel Creemers & Jaap Schaveling Modular Master in Business Administration in Public & Private (MBAPP) Marcel Creemers & Jaap Schaveling Modular Master in Business Administration in Business & IT (MBABIT) Marcel Creemers & Jaap Schaveling Executive Doctoral Program (EDP) Ad Kil Nyenrode has ten academic centers which are responsible for education and research. Most of them studied part-time at Nyenrode. Full-time Nyenrode students live on the Nyenrode campus. • Nyenrode has ten different master’s programs, MBA or post master’s degrees in Management, Law, Accountancy or Controlling. • Nyenrode offers two bachelor’s degrees: the Bachelor of Science in Accountancy and via Nyenrode New Business School Amsterdam a Bachelor in Business Administration. • In customized executive education, supplying 36 customized programs in 2011-2012, Nyenrode is the Dutch market leader. Furthermore, Nyenrode supplied 79 open enrollment programs, contributing to the education of 7,500 executives in 2011-2012. Executive Doctorate Program In November 2010, the Executive Board decided to start an Executive Doctorate Program (EDP), a taught doctorate that provides students with additional structure to support the learning process for a doctoral degree. The program is intended for professionals who want to combine their PhD research with their daily work. In 2011, Nyenrode launched an Executive Doctorate Program for one group of students in the Netherlands. Nyenrode also entered into a partnership with the Nordic International Management Institute (NIMI) in China where another group started this program in 2012. Study Group Students on the Nyenrode Campus As part of Nyenrode’s internationalization strategy, we set up a partnership with Study Group in March 2012. Study Group is an international company with branches in 40 countries and is specialized in Degree Preparation Education. The programs managed by Study Group in the Netherlands are provided by the ‘Holland International Study Centre’ on the campus of Nyenrode. Study Group students follow various degree preparation programs that solve any English language or academic deficiencies they have, after which they will continue their studies at Bachelor’s/Master’s levels at Nyenrode or another Higher Education Institution in the Netherlands. The first international Study Group students on the Nyenrode campus arrived in the fall of 2012. The students live on the campus of Nyenrode during their course. Opening of LEArN Center On Monday, October 8, 2012, Dr. Jim Womack, the Founder and Senior Advisor of the Lean Enterprise Institute and international authority on the subject of LEAN, officially opened the LEArN Center on the Nyenrode Estate. LEAN encapsulates methods and techniques for avoiding waste during the production process. LEArN stands for LEAN Education and Research Network. The initiative was launched by ABN AMRO, Achmea, Nyenrode Business Universiteit and McKinsey & Company to develop research, knowledge and experience relating to LEAN and to share this with each other and with society. The initiators intend to use the center to help strengthen the competitive position of Dutch companies, which has been Nyenrode’s mission since its foundation in 1946. 9 Three Honorary Doctorates in 2012 To commemorate its 65th anniversary, Nyenrode conferred an honorary doctorate on Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on June 15th, 2012. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is generally recognized as one of the most influential spiritual leaders of the present day. With his spiritual techniques, interventions and advice, he reaches a large section of the population – from students to world leaders. Thanks to his open and practical approach to spirituality, the subject is now more firmly on the agenda of businesses large and small throughout the whole world. The previous day, on June 14th, the businessman Jan Aalberts also received an honorary doctorate. As the founder Nyenrode is like my better half because I am encouraged and supported to be a better person, both professionally and personally. More importantly, Nyenrode puts a smile on my face and makes me happy all day, every day. Yoony Kim (International Marketing Manager) and President of Aalberts Industries, this thoroughbred entrepreneur built up his business to become a quoted company with over 150 locations in Europe, North America and Asia. Aalberts Industries is now an international specialist in Industrial Services and Flow Control and has recorded uninterrupted growth in turnover and profitability for several decades. A third honorary doctorate was conferred during the opening of the new academic year. Cultural entrepreneur Joop van den Ende received his honorary doctorate from Nyenrode on September 10, 2012. Although Joop van den Ende is best known for the production of musicals, films, TV shows and television drama, he has also made a name for himself in theater construction and as a patron of the arts. Van den Ende has become a household name in relation to international media and theater. Transformation Project De Luiken Open (Opening the Shutters) Society needs robust auditors and controllers, who not only have the essential knowledge but can also convey that knowledge to others; people who will stand firm if necessary and not hide behind the rules. To better meet these expectations, Nyenrode has started a transformation project called Opening the Shutters (‘De Luiken Open’), in which the university looks for the factors that make a successful and robust auditor/controller. In the year 20112012, the university started implementing the first results of the Opening the Shutters project, illustrations of which are the renewed introduction for first year students with more emphasis on community building and robustness, a training for robust lecturers and a course in ‘Coaching and Mentoring’. We also had a new summer course on The 10 Robust Auditor in the Accountancy program, in which students discussed their own dilemmas and dilemmas from the book ’Het Drama Ahold’ (with its author Jeroen Smit acting as one of the jurors of the debate). Summer Courses Nyenrode initiated summer courses for students on an advanced Bachelor’s and Master’s level. These courses are given in cooperation with the Utrecht Summer School. In 2012, about 200 students enjoyed courses on the Nyenrode campus, attending courses such as ‘Financial Management for Non-Financials’, ‘M&A and Investment Banking’, ‘Transforming Entrepreneurship & Management through Spiritual Innovation’, ‘Banking & the Financial Crisis’ and ‘Law, Leadership & Management’. New Institutes Nyenrode has founded new Institutes like the ‘Nyenrode Corporate Governance Institute’ and the ‘Toezicht Academie’ (‘Governance Academy’) in order to build long-lasting relationships with regulatory, supervisory and oversight bodies to help them with research and subsequent educational needs. The Nyenrode Corporate Governance Institute has performed research for the national ‘Monitoring Committee on Corporate Governance’ and the ‘Monitoring Committee for the Banking Code’, two high-profile studies to shape the future of Corporate Governance and the Banking Industry in the Netherlands. The institute is also responsible for the National Survey of Supervisory Directors (together with the Erasmus University Rotterdam) and it publishes a Yearbook. In 2011, it coorganized a seminar on sustainability in the financial sector attended by Princess Máxima. The institute also launched a special newsletter. In June 2012, the Nyenrode Corporate Governance Institute and the Toezicht Academie jointly held a seminar on monitoring conduct and culture in financial institutions. Nyenrode’s ‘Tablets 4 Education’ wins Awards in Apps-On Competition In 2012, ‘Tablets 4 Education’, a joint project by Nyenrode Business Universiteit, Capgemini and Ares Development, won the second prize in the Apps-On competition organized by SURFnet and Waag Society with an app for a professional second screen for educational purposes. In the Apps-On competition, participants competed for the best app for higher education or research purposes. 11 Rese arch and public ations Nyenrode appeals because you get the best preparation for the world of business, by following a practical program with many deadlines. At first, we had to work very hard, but after the second part, I already felt that I was learning to cope. If you divide everything up and plan it well, you can manage to hand in good work, and on time. Our vision Nyenrode occupies a unique position in research within the Dutch educational landscape. The close ties with the business community, but also with the academic world, ensure that we are in a very good position to create the bridge between fundamental research on one side and the day-to-day practice in the business community on the other side. Nyenrode identifies what the needs of the business world are and uses its academic knowledge and experiments to work out solutions. This contributes to our ambition to be a university that consistently covers the spectrum from work-integrated education to education-integrated work, combining academic rigor and practical relevance. Academic freedom is of utmost importance for good research. Individual freedom for researchers means, for example, being open to innovative ideas, picking up on emerging themes easily and fast, and effective exploitation of expert knowledge on different fields. An integral part of our research policy is to involve students in research as well. In all degree programs, research Guiomar van AxelDongen methodology is part of the curriculum and students are given (Student) applicability in everyday practice of the corporate world. projects/research that focus on real life problems and its 12 Highlights publications/year 2011 2010 2009 Journal articles 151 170 186 Books 23 37 28 Book editor 7 16 12 PhD dissertation 6 8 4 Professors, 3 lecturers and 16 PhD Inaugural lecture 9 1 2 students. They were Raymond Zaal, Rosalie van Stormbroek-Burgers, Rudy Snippe, Hilco van Elten, Henk Kievit and Tim Rogmans. Inaugural Lectures From September 2011 until December 2012, the following professors held their inaugural lectures at Nyenrode: Gijs van Bussel, Sjaak Bloem, Lineke Sneller, Désirée van Gorp, Paul Frentrop, Gert van Dijk, Barbara Bier, Ad Kil, Willem van Rhenen, Lisette van der Hel - Van Dijk, Arco Bobeldijk and Paul Hilbers. Book ‘The Robust Professional’ published During the opening of the academic year 2012-2013, the book ‘De Robuuste Professional: Wijze LESsen’ has been published (in Dutch). This book – edited by Edgar Karssing, Marcel Pheijffer and Bob Hoogenboom – bundles the views and insights on Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Stewardship from the different disciplines at Nyenrode. It is therefore not so much a publication about, but rather from Nyenrode, for everyone interested in management, business administration, accountancy, controlling and corporate governance. Book ‘Remarkable Nyenrode 1946-2011. Remarkable 65’ To celebrate the 65th anniversary, Nyenrode published a special book entitled ‘Remarkable Nyenrode 1946-2011. Remarkable 65’. This book contains portraits of a selection of alumni with a remarkable career or life story, and of people who have performed outstanding services in Nyenrode’s history. 13 Career and Personal Development Journey Our vision Nyenrode’s mission is to fill the need of the national and international business communities for high quality and sustainable leaders, entrepreneurs, knowledge and innovative ideas. As such, relevance of business is what drives the Nyenrode Degree programs, in which Nyenrode aims to educate entrepreneurial managers and robust auditors and controllers at all levels of career and personal development. Both target groups need entrepreneurship, leadership and stewardship as a coherent set of values and characteristics. We are well aware of the fact that the success of Nyenrode depends on the success of our graduates. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to assess their interests, abilities and strengths in order to meet their individual career aspirations. Therefore, all teaching and learning within our degree programs revolves around our Head, Heart and Hands philosophy: Academic rigor based on solid theory (‘Head’), Personal Development (‘Heart’) and Practical relevance (‘Hands’). Furthermore, professional career guidance is available for the students from the Career and Personal Development office. Nyenrode’s employees are very important stakeholders, starting at the gate of the estate. They are the gatekeepers of our core values. This makes our university a personal NYENRODE iNtE RNatiONal mba pROgRam cv book, clas s of 2012 university. Our employees involved in the educational programs consider their primary task to coach and guide our students on their ‘development journey’. Most of our lecturers know the students by name, because our students matter. ‘De Luiken Open’ shows how LES has been embedded within the accountancy and controlling programs and it is a key example for all other programs for the next couple of years. Each program should take into account the personal development goal of the student, and Nyenrode will help the student to accomplish his/her goal. It is also important to put VCV, Nyenrode’s alumni association, more into the scope of students. Also, VCV could play a role within the students’ career development. Finally, we need to determine from a Stewardship point of view what we all want to contribute to Nyenrode. We are all role models for our students and all people involved in our education, such as guest speakers, are considered to be role models too and should be selected on the basis of that point of view. 14 Highlights Alumni sharing Experience and Inspiration Several programs at Nyenrode have incorporated a course – like ‘Meet the CEO ’ in the International MBA program and ‘Reaching the TOP’ in the MSc in Management program - where guest speakers can share their experience and inspiration with current students. Many of these guest speakers are alumni of Nyenrode, such as Bas Rookhuizen, Salem Samhout, Frank van Wezel, Vincent Knoops, Gerard van Bree, Peter Klasse, Esther Jacobs, Marque Joosten and Frans Leenaars. Moreover, many Nyenrode alumni have a role in peer-group coaching for current students, in providing scholarships or thesis projects for students, in selection interviews of candidates and in challenges for prospective students to experience Nyenrode. This provides invaluable support for the educational activities at Nyenrode and creates strong connections in the career and personal development journey between the current students and alumni of Nyenrode. Age is not a Limitation Many employees, especially lecturers, are willing to keep on working after they have turned 65, the official retirement age in the Netherlands. International MBA Students introduce themselves in 2012 CV Book Since September last year, the Nyenrode community has been enriched with a new group of motivated professionals composed of twenty different nationalities. From the moment they arrived at the Nyenrode campus, these IMBA students have been working hard on their personal and professional development. As well as combining theory and practice, each student contributes his or her unique talent, interests and background to the program. To introduce these students to prospective employers, the Career & Personal Development department put together the 2012 CV Book. The best professors and lecturers in the year 2011-2012 The full-time MSc in Management students chose Herman van der Meulen (General Management), Haico Ebbers (International Business), Ed Sprokholt (Financial Management) and Kitty Koelemeijer (Marketing Management) as their Professors of the Year. Ed Sprokholt was elected Professor of the Year by the part-time MSc in Management students. MBA students awarded Venu Venugopal (International MBA), Bob de Wit (Executive MBA) and Bert Kersten (modular MBAs) the title of Professor of the Year. 15 The interviews I had with Nyenrode before starting this course painted a much clearer picture of its actual content. The program is not just a good, international course that you have to dedicate all your time and energy to, it includes a completely new, social life. At Nyenrode, you need to be flexible, well motivated and disciplined. Of course, there are plenty of fun events to attend with your fellow students, but there is usually a deadline too, to stick to. Sometimes, it makes you feel very stressed, but on the other hand, learning to plan and organize your studies in combination with student life will be a good preparation for life in the business sector. The best lecturers of the Accountancy & Controlling Programs in the year 2011-2012, according to the student reviews and results, were: Jan Cuppé (propedeuse Accountancy), Erwin van Dijk (Bachelor Accountancy), Laurens Storm van ’s Gravesande (Master-post Master Accountancy) Hans de Ruiter (MSc Controlling), Bas Steins Bisschop (EMFC) and Martin Vredendaal (‘‘Schakeltraject’’). Charter of Achievement for Jan Dijksma On 13 November, 2012, Professor Jan Dijksma received Nyenrode’s ‘Oorkonde van Verdienste’ (‘Charter of Achievement’) for his important contributions over many years to the activities of the Nyenrode Accountancy program and its predecessors. Since 1973, numerous accountancy students have encountered Professor Dijksma as a lecturer, examiner or thesis supervisor. In several commissions, he contributed Jill Schreuder (Student) to the development of education and examination in the fields of management accounting and financial reporting. In the past, the Charter of Achievement was awarded to the Professors Degenkamp (2001), Gortemaker (2002), Moleveld (2008) and Kuijl (2010). 16 Training The Robust Lecturer If you want to create robust professionals, this also means that their source of learning, the lecturer, should be an example of this solidity. The professor should not only transfer the knowledge required for practicing the financial profession, but he also has to provoke the student to step out of his comfort zone. He has to coach and connect; he has to be able to address the students on the level of personal values and beliefs. This requires a lecturer who has integrated his head, heart and hands. Such integration is only possible if the lecturer himself has explored his own values on a deeper level. This was the goal of the two day course ‘The Robust Teacher’, a direct follow up of the development project De Luiken Open (‘Opening the Shutters’). A pilot of this course was held in the spring of 2012. All of Nyenrode’s lecturers in Accountancy & Controlling will be asked to participate in this course over the next few years. Furthermore, a critical review of Nyenrode’s freelance teaching staff was announced and new criteria were formulated for the selection of lecturers in the coming years. Coaching & Mentoring Course In the year 2011-2012, the Coaching & Mentoring course in the Bachelor of Science in Accountancy was held for the first time. Students who follow this course in their fourth year act as mentors for first-year students. The primary goal of this course is the guidance of first-year students: advancing a good start, offering an approachable contact for questions, supporting the students in finding a balance between work, study and personal life, and building a community in the mentor group. Also, the mentors themselves, the students who choose to follow the course in their fourth year, work on goals in their personal development, supported by the student coaches. 17 Ge t ting alumni involved Our vision The strong commitment and sense of community For me, Nyenrode is an inspiring workplace; with very diverse and interesting people, the estate is beautiful, we have great meetings and the work we do contributes to a better society. has been created as part of the campus life, and of being member of the Campus Association and finally by VCV (Nyenrode Alumni Association). VCV has opened itself to all alumni and in return Nyenrode recognizes VCV as the Nyenrode alumni organization, promoting VCV membership amongst all graduates. In the years to come, VCV will need to find ways to offer real value to all alumni and Nyenrode is committed to help VCV to do so, partly through Nyenrode Life Long Learning career education and through professional education programs for the ‘Kringen’, through a consistent ‘upgrading’ program for all more recent degree graduates et cetera. Nyenrode is committed to stimulating and developing talented people, irrespective of their background in society. For this Judith Droste purpose, there is the long-established Nyenrode Fund. This (Program Manager i.e. its alumni and its corporate partners, to provide Customized Programs) scholarships and loan opportunities to talented students foundation receives funding from the Nyenrode community, that need it. The fund is managed in close collaboration with Nyenrode, VCV and the Nyenrode corporate relations management. The study fund will enable Nyenrode to continue to attract highly talented students, to ensure a higher degree of diversity in classrooms thus enhancing the quality of education. These hi-potential students and alumni can enhance the reputation of Nyenrodians as a group. Scholarships rank amongst the Fund’s most important goals as they enable talented (foreign) students to study at our university. The alumni of a certain year may decide to adopt a student and thus make his/her study possible. Nyenrode alumni are willing to do so because they are grateful for being part of the Nyenrode community and they want to encourage 18 good students to take part in the Nyenrode experience as well. At the same time, alumni act as mentors and coaches for their adopted students. A new development is the involvement of alumni in peer-group coaching of current students. Peer-group coaching provides the opportunity to investigate who you are. At the same time it teaches students how to coach. The alumni are trained to coach the peer reviews. Their involvement links them to our university community. Highlights Facts & Figures Every year about 60 students can study at Nyenrode with a scholarship. Many of these scholarships are donated by alumni. The scholarships are granted on a revolving foundation, which means that after scholarship winners have graduated, they are asked to donate to the foundation so new students can have the same opportunity - a clear example of stewardship. number of students with a scholarship MSc in Management MBA Total 2010-2011 9 56 65 2011-2012 33 33 66 2012-2013 24 34 58 • The total budget for scholarships was 994k (€) in 2010-2011, 849k (€) in 2011-2012 and 654k (€) in 2012-2013. • Nyenrode’s alumni network consists of 15,000 alumni operating in about 100 different countries all over the world. • Since 2011, the students on the accountancy and controlling programs can also become members of VCV. 19 Founding Fathers back at Nyenrode With the exception of the names of several leading figures from Nyenrode’s earliest years on a few buildings, the Founding Fathers are not very visible at Nyenrode. And many people would like to see that change. Accordingly, the Nyenrode Fund Foundation has taken the initiative to turn the spotlight back onto those important early sponsors and therefore, many board members of the original Founding Fathers companies were invited for a get-together at Nyenrode’s Coach House on Monday November 21 , 2011, st for the 65th Dies Natalis. Among the (legal successors of the) Founding Fathers are companies such as Unilever, Air France-KLM, Philips and Akzo Nobel. Alumni as Role Models Our alumni are considered to be role models and as such they are, for example, invited as key note speakers to graduation ceremonies, or they participate in the selection procedure for new students. The Fund rewards the best role model alumnus with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ based on how the alumnus shows Leadership-EntrepreneurshipStewardship. This year Roland Kahn received the award. Nyenrode Fund (SNF) The major part of the Nyenrode Fund contains money from our alumni. The Fund’s board always considers carefully how it should use the contributions. The yearly study trip abroad, organized by the students themselves, is also an activity sponsored by the Fund. Furthermore, the Nyenrode Fund is involved in the construction and renovation of the buildings on the estate, such as the recently restored small bower in the ‘Korentuin’, one of the thirty state monuments on the property. Memorial Bench Peter Amaczi On Saturday June 16, 2012, a delegation of the International MBA class of 1997 – 1998 gathered for the unveiling of a memorial bench on the estate for their classmate Peter Amaczi, who sadly passed away in 2010. Guests of honor were Peter’s parents, Zsuzsa and Viktor Amaczi, his sister Anna and his aunt and uncle. Art Trail Often, students of the different programs donate works of art and other objects to Nyenrode, of which a number have been installed by Nyenrode’s Art Committee along a special art trail on Beukenlaan. A specially written art-trail flyer contains more information about these works and their background. 20 Reducing our e nvironme ntal impac t Our vision The facility department covers a lot of different divisions from purchase, campus facilities like buildings and monuments, to the catering services, hotel service and finally, the garden and greenhouse. To the facility department, stewardship means that sustainability concerns all stakeholders and it is a challenge for the management to embed it throughout the entire university. We consider how to reduce our environmental impact when renovating the buildings and looking for energy-reducing materials and procedures. We have made investments to diminish the consumption of waste, water and energy. Communication about these activities plays an important role. In view of a sustainable campus, waste separation has already been established as an ongoing project. The main goal for the near future is to establish energy management that enables the monitoring of the energy consumption (gas, water, electricity). Last year we decided to use an electric car for general services. The car will be available soon. Next academic year’s fixed target is to achieve 10% energy costs reduction. Another focus is on a future-proof, sustainable purchase policy, i.e. only buying products with a green label. This policy includes the sustainable construction of buildings, waste reduction in the restaurant and our catering operations, paper use, fair-trade coffee, use of Nyenrode’s garden and greenhouse products and preserving biodiversity on the estate. Highlights Facts & Figures Since November, 2011, all electricity used at Nyenrode is green. Key Performance indicators are: • Nyenrode used in 2009-2010 2.360k (kWh), in 2010-2011 this was 2.182k (kWh) and in 2011-2012 2.258k (kWh). •Nyenrode has not generated any electricity on its estate during the past decade. Our plans for future renovation include examining the option of installing solar panels. •For the heating of its facilities, Nyenrode used in 2009-2010 626k (m3); in 2010-2011, this was 671k (m3) and in 2011-2012 608k (m3). The main reasons for the fluctuation in gas consumption correspond to the weather conditions during the year. ‘Green’ Estate An estate is very often green in color but not always ’green’ in the sustainable sense of the word. Think of all the pesticides and herbicides that are used to keep most large gardens and estates under control. Not at Nyenrode! For over 25 years, no pesticides or herbicides have been used on the estate. As you can imagine, it takes an incredible amount of creativity and ingenuity to manage a 56-hectare estate without the use of chemicals. The Nyenrode estate has been designated by the authorities as a protected National Ecological Network (Ecologische Hoofdstructuur). 21 Biodiversity on our Campus The Nyenrode estate is a very special area for fungi and has more variety of species than any other estate in the Netherlands. Different environmental factors influence the variety but it has everything to do with good estate management. Species of fungi that are rare in the Netherlands are discovered at Nyenrode on a regular basis. One of the best and most beautiful Business School Campuses In 2012, Nyenrode estate listed on MBAPrograms.org as one of the 50 best and most beautiful business school campuses. Charging Point electric Cars and Nyenrode Bicycles In 2012, Nyenrode installed a charging point for two electric cars on the car park. Although the use of electric cars It is always exciting because you never know what will happen. Paul de Blot is a rather new development in the Netherlands - on average the charging points are used twice a week at Nyenrode– there is clearly an increasing demand for it. Another ‘green’ development is that we now have two Nyenrode bicycles that can be borrowed, available for both employees and guests. ‘Nyenrode Go Green’ Group In 2009, various staff-members initiated the ‘Nyenrode (Professor of Go Green’ group. The goal of this group is to create awareness Business Spirituality) of environmental problems and willingness to act on this at the university and among its staff. The university has encouraged this bottom-up approach and various management team members have joined the group. The group initially focused on ‘quick wins’ such as replacing single garbage bins with triple (plastic, paper, waste) recycling bins and making the hotels more sustainable by using ecological soaps and fair trade products, for instance. In addition, the Go Green group researched the financial viability of various green initiatives such as the introduction of electric cars for on-campus transportation, ways to reduce energy consumption and ways to encourage the use of public transport to the university. Anke van Hal again in Trouw’s ‘Sustainable 100’ In 2011, Prof. Dr. Anke van Hal, Professor of Sustainable Building and Development at Nyenrode, was ranked number 74 in the ‘Sustainable 100’ list of the Dutch newspaper ‘Trouw’. In 2012, she was elected second in the Duurzame 50 Vastgoed NL list (‘Sustainable 50 Real Estate NL’). 22 Impac t on loc al and global com munities Our vision Community building is one of the strongest features of Nyenrode. Our students become part of the Nyenrode community for life. Alumni express their bonding with Nyenrode in different ways, for example, by participating as guest speakers in programs, by coaching current students or by meeting students in the context of ‘Meet the CEO’. The Nyenrode Community comprises our students, our alumni, our corporate relations, our faculty and our staff. Our students can join JCV, NCV or VAS, while our alumni are united in VCV. NCV, Nieuwe Compagnie van Verre, was founded in 1947 and had HRH Prince Bernhard von Lippe-Biesterfeld as its patron and an honorary member. For full-time students, life at Nyenrode is founded on three pillars: the program, student life and NCV. NCV has 38 committees, each responsible for various matters such as a selection of sports activities, musical events and managing the Zolderbar. VAS, the Vereniging van Accountancy Studenten, has been looking after the interests of accountancy students since 1971 and offers support for students in various ways. As the representative of student interests, VAS has a seat on several of the Nyenrode Accountancy department’s consultative bodies and task forces. In addition, VAS puts much effort into stimulating the bonds among students and reinforcing student ties with the university. JCV, the Jongste Compagnie van Verre, was founded in 2011 for, and by, the students of Nyenrode New Business School and aims to encourage students to build a network for their future. Over the past year, the association grew from 35 to over 100 members. JCV activities include organizing introduction weekends, the annual gala night, the end-of-term party and sports such as running, rugby and indoor football. 23 24 VCV, the Voortgezette Compagnie van Verre, was set up in 1957 as a logical continuation of NCV. Alumni wanted to cherish the bond they had forged during their course. VCV is independent of the university and organizes both social and professional activities. Herman Bruggink, a former president of Nyenrode and honorary member of VCV has called the association the key to Nyenrode’s existence. Over the years, Nyenrode has strengthened its structural ties with the local community, the town of Breukelen. As Nyenrode is the largest employer in the region and also its proximity to Breukelen, Nyenrode has a high impact on the town and its environment. Nyenrode’s five partner universities have been selected based on their outstanding reputation with respect to one or more of our core values. For example, Northeastern University (United States) is focused on entrepreneurship while Stellenbosch University (South Africa) is more targeted towards stewardship and leadership. Our goal with respect to the collaboration with our partners is to work together on new and joint education programs. Highlights Facts & Figures At an institutional level, Nyenrode works with a limited number of valued international academic partners on the basis of reciprocity. The key partners span the globe, are internationally reputed business schools and are closely related to Nyenrode in their philosophy. The main activities with these partners encompass student exchange, faculty exchange, international research projects and joint education programs. Our key international academic partners are: • Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, India • Northeastern University, USA • Renmin University of Beijing, China • Stellenbosch University Business School, South Africa • University of Oregon, USA Since 2008, Nyenrode has signed contracts with multinationals such as ING, Rabobank, Achmea and SNS Bank as a preferred supplier of education. In recent years, several companies and non-profit organizations have sponsored Nyenrode Chairs including organizations such as Veroz, Heijmans, Capgemini, ArboNed and Janssen. On the national level, Nyenrode is a partner of MVO Nederland – the main network organization with 2,000 partners dedicated to corporate social responsibility. On the global level, Nyenrode has intensified its membership of EABIS – the Academy for Business in Society – to the level of partner. Following INSEAD (2011) and IMD (2012), Nyenrode will organize the annual colloquium of EABIS at its premises in 2013. It will be on the theme ‘Sustainability and Finance’. 25 65th anniversary of Nyenrode Business Universiteit In 2011, Nyenrode had been established for 65 years. Nyenrode and the great diversity of students stimulate and inspire me to be like them, to excel. The continuous connection of theory and practice for me as a pracademic is the great value of Nyenrode! On the 3rd of September, 1,500 students, alumni, faculty members and other friends of Nyenrode came together to celebrate the 65th anniversary. The party area around the Castle and the Coach House was occupied by a variety of culinary stalls and there were a number of presentations, an auction and performances by renowned Dutch artists such as Ali B and Xander de Buisonjé as well as the Nyenrode Booz Band. After the regular program, a scintillating late-night party began in the Coach House. Princess Máxima receives Postma Prize Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima of the Netherlands was awarded the Postma Prize at Nyenrode in November 2011. The prize was initiated to celebrate Nyenrode’s 65th anniversary and is awarded to people who have performed Marcel Pheijffer an outstanding social service in the field of Leadership, Entrepreneurship and/or Stewardship, the leading themes (Professor of Accountancy) at Nyenrode. The 2011 Postma Prize consisted of a sculpture by the sculptor Pieter Kortekaas. The Postma Prize is named after the former Rector and Chairman of the Executive Board, Dr. Jacques Postma (1913-1997). The prize was presented during the conference ‘Sustainability in the Financial Sector. Are we ready?’, an event that was co-organized by the Nyenrode Corporate Governance Institute. During this event, Princess Máxima delivered a speech on Inclusive Finance. On May 29th, 2012, Máxima also attended the inaugural lecture by Professor Gert van Dijk, Professor of (Cooperative) Microfinancial Services in Developing Economies. New Dean of Campus In 2012, a new Dean of Campus was appointed. Prior to that, the position of Dean of Campus had been vacant for years. The Dean of Campus initiates and stimulates the integration of educational activities in a campus environment 26 while stimulating and watching over the social climate on the campus and the well-being of students who live on campus as well as the employees. A major part of the job is to ‘bring together’ students and create ‘the Nyenrode feel’ with the corresponding norms and values. Collaboration with Dutch Embassy in Dhaka The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN) in Dhaka, within its scope of economic diplomacy, has partnered with Nyenrode Business Universiteit in order to stimulate economic relations between the Netherlands and Bangladesh. The strategic aim of the Embassy is to strengthen bilateral commercial ties in a responsible manner and support the improvement of the Bangladeshi business environment with a spill-over effect that improves the lives of the poor. The partnership aims to increase sustainable bilateral trade and investment in four identified sectors (water, food, logistics and the IT-sector with a special focus on outsourcing activities) thus facilitating private sector development (PSD) in Bangladesh. The focus of sustainability will be on employment generation (specifically targeted at women) and introducing clean (and where applicable innovative) technology. Making history relevant: Crowd-sourcing medal as an example Nyenrode’s heritage manager Gert Immerzeel is working with the Corporate Communications department to use modern methods of communication to present Nyenrode’s history and make it relevant and interesting for today’s users. This is one illustration: in 2011, Immerzeel found an old prize medal on the estate, fabricated around 1860 for the ‘Vereeniging ter bevordering van fabriek- en handnijverheid in Nederland’ (‘Association for the Promotion of Manufacturing and Handcrafts in the Netherlands’). Associations such as these frequently organized contests in which people were asked to submit solutions for all kinds of practical, industrial issues. The medal then was awarded to the person with the most innovative and enterprising vision. Thus, this historic award fits in perfectly with Nyenrode’s current aims and ethos. In the new Nyenrode Career Challenge 2013 launched in October 2012, Nyenrode, together with Capgemini and The International Correspondent, was again looking for useful and innovative visions. They rewarded talent for the best ideas for a sustainable future of business and society. The finalists of this Challenge were awarded a replica of the old medal. In recent years, Gert Immerzeel also published articles about the medal: in ‘De Beeldenaar’, a renowned Dutch numismatic magazine and in a regional history magazine. Sculptures: Art as a Metaphor The year 2011-2012 was the year of Nyenrode’s 65th anniversary, a joyful event which was commemorated in many ways. For this occasion, several-meter-high bronze sculptures by the renowned sculptor Pieter Kortekaas were installed on the Nyenrode estate. He has loaned these sculptures to Nyenrode for the next five years. They were unveiled over the course of the anniversary year by different groups of Nyenrode stakeholders and corporate relations. Kortekaas’ works of art encapsulate human and spiritual strength and energy. The bronze sculptures are a metaphor for the new direction in leadership and entrepreneurship. They are intended to serve as a source of inspiration for the students, employees and alumni of the university. The first sculpture that was unveiled was ‘The Conversation’. The other sculptures are named ‘Tulip Vases’, ‘The Temple’, ‘Strength’ and ‘King’s Throne’. 27 Estate opened for visitors We annually open our estate on ‘Dutch Heritage Day’ (Open Monumentendag) as well as for a Christmas stroll for the local community in December. We also sometimes arrange free tours and free entertainment by local performers. As of 2012, we also have a virtual tour of our Castle online on the Nyenrode website. In June, we host the annual Dutch Herring Party (Hollandse Haringpartij), an important society and network event. Another example is the Quality in Music concerts, which we host from time to time. These concerts offer young talented musicians from the Netherlands the opportunity to showcase their skills to a wider audience. Together with the Town Council, we have made the Castle an official wedding location for people from the local community and our staff. Nyenrode appoints University Carilloneur In 2011, Nyenrode officially appointed Jan Willem Achterkamp to the position of University Carilloneur. In this capacity, Achterkamp regularly plays the Nyenrode carillon in the Castle during events. Start-up help for students Students who set up an enterprise before or after graduation are facilitated by Nyenrode to use the ‘Nyenrode Business Accelerator’, which offers them coaching, office space and shared services, linking our facilities with our entrepreneurial focus, our alumni, our faculty and our corporate relations. The Nyenrode Business Accelerator is located in the Coach House on the Nyenrode estate and has five companies in 2012. New course to tackle slum issues On 1 October, 2012, Cordaid, Nyenrode and AT Osborne announced that they were to design a new course: ‘Urban Change Labs’. This new program with its innovative education concept gives content to the international theme ‘Changing Cities Building Opportunities’. The program’s students are from different industries and will think up clever solutions for the problems facing slum areas. Innovative solutions are badly needed because the world’s urban population will continue to rise in the coming years and current, conventional methods are simply not good enough. This partnership was presented as a showcase at the 2012 Partner Elections which were held at Nyenrode. Executive Doctorate Program starts in Chengdu, China On May 24, 2012, the first Nyenrode Executive Doctorate Program started at the Nordic International Management Institute (NIMI) in Chengdu, China. The seventeen candidates come from eleven different countries and they are combining their jobs with a doctorate project. Partnership Baker Tilly Berk for Education ‘The Robust Auditor’ Nyenrode and audit firm Baker Tilly Berk started a cooperative program to educate the Robust Auditor. The program is constructed on five pillars: the theoretical academic program, the internship, the internal training courses at the office, both in the field of techniques and social skills, and training by actually doing the job itself. By coordinating these five pillars, overlap between them can be avoided. Also, timing of the courses can be adapted to the activities of the job. Nyenrode New Business Regatta On Saturday, April 28, 2012, the first edition of the Nyenrode New Business Regatta took place. In the wee hours of the morning, ten rowing boats left for a 40-kilometer race, starting in the center of Amsterdam and finishing at the Nyenrode castle. This rowing competition along the old Amsterdam-Breukelen trade route was organized in celebration of the merger of the New Business School Amsterdam and Nyenrode Business Universiteit. A total of 200 students, alumni, entrepreneurs and others joined the race, with the closing festivities held at Nyenrode. The second edition of the Nyenrode New Business Regatta will be held On April 27, 2013. 28 Corporate Marketing & Communications Team helps Parc Spelderholt In late March 2012, the entire Corporate Marketing & Communications team of Nyenrode devoted two days to helping Parc Spelderholt in Beekbergen, near Apeldoorn, devise new initiatives in the field of marketing and communications. Parc Spelderholt is a place where students with a mental disability can learn to live and work as independently as possible. In addition to the school, Parc Spelderholt offers conference facilities and a (health care) hotel. Parc Spelderholt is situated on a beautiful, wooded country estate, with a historic country house and a campus, and thus is strongly reminiscent of Nyenrode in terms of its ambiance. Of course, there are major differences between the students of both schools, yet there is also an important similarity. Just like at Nyenrode, the students of Spelderholt are committed to pulling out all the stops to ensure their progression in life. Goudstikker Heiress Marei von Saher visits Nyenrode In the weekend of September 14 to 16, 2012, Nyenrode was visited by Marei von Saher, daughter-in-law of the art dealer and former Nijenrode lord of the manor Jacques Goudstikker (1897-1940). One of the reasons for her visit was a photo shoot for the magazine ‘Ode to Breukelen’ by Nyenrode alumnus Jaap Holtzapffel. Heritage manager Gert Immerzeel and the Corporate Communications department organized a tour of the estate for her and a presentation on Nyenrode’s history followed by a dinner in the Castle hosted by a representative of the Board. In recent years, Von Saher successfully made a claim against the Dutch state for the return of paintings from the former Goudstikker collection. These had been taken to Germany during the Second World War, only to reappear in Dutch museums after the war. Fund raising for India Project Together with New Business School Amsterdam, Bachelor students have raised €60,000 for the ‘Zeg ja voor India’ (‘say yes to India’ at www.zegjavoorindia.nl) project of the Roundtable India Foundation (www.roundtableindia.org). The raised funds are being used to build schools in India. As part of their fundraising campaign, the students organized a charity black-tie dinner in the Artis Royal Zoo. During the dinner, former Prime-Minister JanPeter Balkenende delivered a speech and further funds were raised by an auction chaired by Christie’s Auction House. Projects for local Entrepreneurs All students on the full-time MSc program at Nyenrode did projects for local entrepreneurs. In total, 23 projects were done on themes like market positioning, strategic alignment and new product development. The support of the municipality of the Stichtse Vecht and the business circles of Breukelen and Woerden proved very helpful for this. These projects serve many purposes: they add value to the local entrepreneurs and strengthen the local embeddedness of Nyenrode. Furthermore, being involved in the complexity of real-life management problems can contribute a lot to the students’ learning process. And the fact that they do this for small and medium-sized companies signals clearly to them that business is much broader then a small group of famous brands. Globe Students, candidates for programs and Nyenrode’s partners hail from all over the world. At the end of 2012, we placed a ‘globe’ on Nyenrode’s website to display our global presence. 29 I like to work at Nyenrode because you work with motivated students: people who really want to achieve something. We work at the intersection of education, research and service and Nyenrode has a lot of variety with many highlights (“never a dull moment”). Jan Bots (Professor of Controlling) 30 Benchmarks and achie ve ment s Nyenrode has a huge reputation and is very well-known as a brand. Nyenrode’s distinctive factors compared to other universities are the strong attention for students’ personal development and community building. Our students are on a ‘development journey’, where character, skills and competencies are trained and are above all shaped. A robust auditor has the guts to ask critical questions. Nyenrode students should have the guts to make decisions, in difficult times too, and this creates the difference that the world of business essentially wants: real leaders and entrepreneurs. Highlights Facts & Figures Our degree programs have been accredited by the Dutch Ministry of Education (through its national NVAO accreditation program), by AMBA and by EQUIS, and by the Central Register of Higher Education Study Programs (CROHO). The Accountancy programs are also accredited by the Commissie Eindtermen Accountantsopleiding (CEA) and the Executive Master of Finance & Control program is also accredited by the Vereniging van Registercontrollers (VRC). Nyenrode is subject to the Higher Education and Research Act of 1993 in the Netherlands, conforming to a Bachelor-Master System, as well as to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Nyenrode adheres to current national academic codes of conduct. In 2001, the Dutch Royal Scientific Academy (Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen, KNAW) and the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek, NWO) issued a notice on scientific integrity and consequently established the National Entity of Scientific Integrity (Landelijk Orgaan Wetenschappelijke Integriteit, LOWI). LOWI implemented the Code of Conduct for Scientific Practice on January 1st 2005, intended for all universities in the Netherlands. This code aims to address the societal demands and academic requirements for conducting scientific research. Its goal is to enhance the awareness of what good scientific research and teaching entails. 31 Best Masters In the ‘2012 Guide to Master’s Degrees’ (‘Keuzegids Masters 2012’) published by Centrum Hoger Onderwijs Informatie (CHOI), students and experts give their assessments of the master’s courses available at Dutch universities. • Top scores in the Business Administration category: Nyenrode’s MSc in Management and MSc in Bedrijfskunde; • Best Dutch master in Accountancy category: Nyenrode’s MSc in Controlling, followed by MSc in Accountancy; • Best post-initial master’s program in Accountancy category: Executive Master of Finance & Control (there are no other comparable programs in the ranking). • Best master in the overall ranking of all the master’s programs at Dutch universities: MSc in Business Administration • Third best university in the Netherlands: Nyenrode Business Universiteit FT Ranking Executive Education In the 2012 Financial Times rankings for open executive education programs, Nyenrode is now listed as the best business school in the Netherlands. This is the conclusion of the first survey of business schools by Management Team (MT) magazine. Almost without exception, MBA alumni are very satisfied with the program they did. MT attributes Nyenrode’s good score to, among other things, life on campus and the close ties between Nyenrode and the private sector. In September 2012, readers of MT ranked Nyenrode no.1 in a list of educational institutes in the Netherlands for academic MBA education. Nyenrode is a finalist in MBA Innovation Award Nyenrode was one of the four finalists in the competition for the MBA Innovation Award organized by the Association of MBAs. Jan Nooitgedagt new Chairman Supervisory Board During the December 11 meeting of the SupervisoryBoard, André Olijslager stepped down as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Nyenrode Foundation. His successor is Jan Nooitgedagt, CFO at AEGON. Since 2010, Mr. Olijslager has been Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Nyenrode Foundation. Olijslager will remain a member of the Supervisory Board. 34 Closing re marks from the Preside nt The academic year 2011/2012 will be remembered as a good year. Nyenrode celebrated its 65th anniversary with a vibrant community of students, alumni, faculty and staff. The trend of improving financial strength and academic quality has been extended and the values of Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Stewardship have been given depth in all Nyenrode programs. The Board of the Nyenrode Foundation has been stable and well functioning during the reporting year. The Board met six times in person and four times by telephone. Moreover, the real estate, audit and remuneration committees met before each formal board meeting. The strategy committee has been less active as Nyenrode focused its attention on execution of the strategic plan 2012-2015. The Chairman of the Board spent considerable time with the Executive Committee of the university to contribute to the smooth transition of the Rector Magnificus. Prof. Dr. Maurits van Rooijen decided to return to the UK. We are grateful for the leadership that Professor Van Rooijen provided. His impact will be lasting on several fronts: (1) during his term the values Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Stewardship have been developed, (2) undergraduate in business was brought back to the Nyenrode suite of degree programs by incorporating the New Business School in Amsterdam and (3) internationalization has regained its (historic) prominent place at Nyenrode. We are happy that we found a great new rector in Prof. Dr. Miša Džoljić who has started in his new position on November 1, 2012. Nyenrode takes its role as steward of the estate seriously and has spent considerable time and money maintaining the estate and its buildings. We are working with the municipality of the Stichtse Vecht to develop the future vision of Nyenrode in its physical community and the gymnasium was reconfigured to become a LEA(r)N training center for our clients. We are proud to be partnering with McKinsey, Achmea and ABN AMRO in this initiative. Financially, Nyenrode improved its strength during the reporting year. Equity was further strengthened by adding the net result (2.200.000) to our reserves and the debt to InHolland was redeemed early as our cash flow allowed us to do so. The market environment remains difficult for every institution, also for Nyenrode. Therefore we are grateful to our clients for their continued engagement and our alumni for their support. The Stichting Nyenrode Fonds has worked tirelessly to find donors to support our university. This has allowed many students to study at Nyenrode with a scholarship and has contributed to the financial health of the university. We expect the environment in the coming years to remain difficult, so we remain cautious, but we are investing in the quality of our university both in executive education and in degree programs to improve our offering. Under the leadership of our new Rector Professor Džoljić we will continue to execute our strategic plan and we will look beyond its boundaries as most goals have been achieved and we need to broaden our horizon.
