PR EFAC E
Prof. Dr. Miša Džoljic, Rector Magnificus
Nyenrode Business Universiteit has always placed a main
focus on serving the international community. As early
as 1946, our founding fathers, KLM, Shell, Unilever, Philips
and Akzo, formulated the Nyenrode reason-to-be as
developing “new business leaders who are action inclined
and internationally oriented”. These companies, all of which
have continued to call the world their home, could not
have conceived Nyenrode in any other way but with an
international outlook.
As an organization, Nyenrode remains committed to the larger international community by
acting as a catalyst for companies, entrepreneurs, executives, managers and professionals in
the Netherlands and abroad. We also remain committed to Nyenrode’s trinity of Leadership,
Entrepreneurship and Stewardship; we recognize that leadership and entrepreneurship can only
be of value in business and society when they are accompanied by a true sense of responsibility
towards people and planet.
We strive to be a high-quality, trend-setting and entrepreneurial university: a seat of learning
that combines academic rigor with practical relevance and that continues to produce successful
entrepreneurs and leaders in business as well as related professions. Our vision is to become
a preferred partner of internationally focused students and organizations, to rank among the
top twenty European education and research communities, and to operate as a member of a
global network of top business and finance schools.

For the benefit of students as well as the national and international business
communities in which they will operate, Nyenrode strives to generate and disseminate
knowledge, to develop and spread innovative ideas, and to deliver sustainable,
top-quality leaders and entrepreneurs. This means that all of our degree programs
combine academic rigor and practical relevance, and we offer our students all the skills,
knowledge and networks that they need to boost their career. Whether they study to
obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at the Nyenrode New Business
School in Amsterdam or whether they are enrolled in the MSc program in Management or
the International MBA program in Breukelen, all our degree students work on a range of
projects and initiatives throughout the academic year. This is done in close cooperation
with representatives from the business community and the European Union, be it in
the form of introductory exchanges and business games or mobility programs and
scholarships. Each of these activities offers a key contribution to the widely acclaimed
Nyenrode Experience.

business game st. gallen
On April 25 and 26, 2014, two students from the Nyenrode MSc in Management 22 program (Yechuan Hu and Rehan Ahmed)
participated in the Business Game held in St. Gallen, Switzerland. This two-day business game welcomed 100 students from
31 different nationalities who had to tackle a hands-on company business case and develop practical solutions for a total
of four challenges organized by Unilever, BDO Switzerland, Swarovski and Bâloise. For Yechuan Hu, the business game was
an eye-opening experience: “I believe this kind of experience is extremely helpful for my future career and business life. It
is also an inspiring opportunity to get to know top business students from all over Europe. It clearly gave me a benchmark
impression of the top European business universities and it has encouraged me to study even harder and improve my skills.
Especially my experience with the group work and committee projects that I was involved in at Nyenrode helped me while
solving the business cases together with people from different business universities.”

Weekend
The MBA Weekend is an opportunity for students
to learn and appreciate why Nyenrode students
live business, lead business and love business.
Weekend events are organized three to four
times a year, and each of these welcomes 30
to 40 potential students from the Netherlands
and abroad. During these weekends, students
follow lectures offered by Nyenrode professors,
participate in workshops with our leadership
experts, attend joint meetings with students
and alumni and receive all the attention they
need from Nyenrode’s staff. From February
7 to 9, 2014, during one of Nyenrode’s MBA
Weekends, we were honored to welcome Ms.
XiaoQian Ma from the leading Chinese media
channel Sohu.com. During her visit, Ms. Ma
had the opportunity to enjoy our estate and
have interviews with different members of the
Nyenrode community, including students,
alumni, faculty and staff. At the same time, she
was given a taste of life at Nyenrode and she
attended talk shows featuring alumni from our
International and Executive MBA programs.

Visit London Produce
Show and Conference
Nyenrode’s Professor of Marketing Henry Robben
was invited to deliver a keynote address at The
London Produce Show and Conference, held from
June 4 to 6, 2014. This event was the first of its
kind to be staged in the UK for the fresh fruit,
vegetable and flower industries. The exhibition
welcomed trade exhibitors and a wide range of
produce buyers from the retail, foodservice and
wholesale sectors, who were given the opportunity
to mingle and create new business. Henry Robben
presented a general picture of how companies
will not survive in the market unless they have
competitive advantages that make them more
relevant for customers. Eight Nyenrode students
were selected to accompany him and visit the
event for networking purposes.
NYENRODE INTERNATIONAL YEARBOOK 2015
Scholarships
nyenrode scholarships
The Nyenrode Fund (or ‘Stichting Nyenrode Fonds’ in Dutch) helps
alumni to sponsor students who otherwise would not have the financial
means to study at Nyenrode, and it also raises funds for investments
in the university and the estate. Originating from the Dr. E.B.J. Postma
Chair of Entrepreneurship, named after the celebrated Rector who
headed Nyenrode from 1950 until 1980, the Nyenrode Fund is run by
alumni.
revolving scholarships
Following a decline in company-sponsored scholarships, Nyenrode
decided to launch its own revolving scholarship project. This was done
in 2010. Revolving scholarships are financed by alumni (for the benefit
of classes, debating societies, year clubs, VCV Circles and individual
alumni), and the recipient is expected to repay the scholarship at a later
moment.
red cross scholarship
Nyenrode Business Universiteit takes pride in honoring its commitment
to stewardship by offering a qualified candidate from the Red Cross
and Red Crescent Movement one full-tuition scholarship (Red Cross
Scholarship) for the International MBA program. NGOs are not often
represented in MBA classes, even though they play a significant
role in affecting businesses. The International Red Cross and Red
Crescent Movement is one of the largest globally operating NGOs, and
cooperation therefore presents highly promising opportunities for
Nyenrode. As a qualified candidate, Ahmad Hallak, current International
MBA participant and Red Cross member, won the full-tuition
scholarship and started his studies at Nyenrode in 2013: “One of the
decisive factors in opting for Nyenrode was the fact that the university
has built a strong relationship with many different companies and the
Dutch industry sector. This is a wonderful learning experience for Red
Cross workers, especially since most of them typically get to work with
people from cultures that they are not familiar with.”

Nyenrode Alumni VCV
Internationalization as a Key Feature for VCV
Housed on the Nyenrode estate, the Nyenrode Alumni Voortgezette Compagnie van Verre (NA VCV) has
always distinguished itself from other alumni associations. It is the largest and most closely-knit alumni
association in the Netherlands, and it is an independent association with its own statutes and finances.
Moreover, and in contrast with other associations, it was set up exclusively as a networking community
rather than an association focused on raising funds for the university via its alumni. Since NA VCV’s
inception, membership has grown steadily; in September 2014, the Association had as many as 5,757 alumni
operating in 92 countries all over the globe. Although their backgrounds are highly varied, all alumni have
one thing in common: their stories are exemplary.
simone redelé-daniëls, na vcv
Our alumni, Dutch nationals and internationals, operate in the Netherlands as
well as abroad. This is why all publications issued by NA VCV are bilingual, so
that we can serve our alumni across the world in the best possible way. To fund
the bilingual publication of our Alumni Magazine ‘Van Verre’, we have made
extra investments. Internationalization has long been one of NA VCV’s key focus
points; during our most recent Refreshment Day, attended by former European
Commissioner and Nyenrode President Ms. Neelie Kroes, we arranged for an
interpreter to make sure that our international members would not miss
a single thing. NA VCV has a number of special circles and groups whose members
convene on a regular basis to discuss various different issues and themes. In the
Netherlands, for example, we have a dedicated and active NA VCV Internationals
Circle that offers all expats the opportunity to get together and talk about

substantive topics. In addition, we have a large number of similar
circles operating all over the world through which Nyenrode alumni
can stay in touch with the university and each other. It goes without
saying that with the continued internationalization of Nyenrode
Business Universiteit, our own alumni association continues to grow,
too. For current Nyenrode students planning to go abroad on study
trips, for instance, we regularly organize special events so that they
can meet with alumni who are active in the country they plan to visit. If
requested, we also set up initial contacts. Conversely, for the benefit or
our alumni we regularly organize events called ‘homecomings’.
It is always a very special experience to see that alumni from all over the
world with a Nyenrode background that may date back to as far as 1946
are always prepared and willing to return to their Alma Mater. In this
way, we can keep our international NA VCV network actively involved,
strong and vibrant.

turning your own company into a success
“After I had worked for the English branch of the Kenian
company for approximately six months, I decided to set up
my own business. This was when I realized that Europe was
a favorable place for doing business and that you can just
as easily become successful with your own firm. Still, what
I needed was a product. I then noticed that everybody at
my squash club kept complaining about their shoes, and
I concluded that the English apparently needed shoes for
playing squash that were better than the products on offer
at the time. I started researching how shoes are made and
subsequently developed a new type myself. It became very
popular, and the rest is history: today, as many as forty

how did your international career develop
after your graduation from nyenrode business

Arjan Dijk
Vice President Marketing Google Inc
“One of the key reasons for me to opt for Nyenrode was
its highly international and entrepreneurial outlook. At
the time, in the context of the 1980s, very few academic
institutions demonstrated this outlook. My BBA degree
from Nyenrode proved to be an excellent foundation for
my later international career; it has taken me from working
in several European countries to working in Silicon Valley in
the USA, where my global role involves the management of
teams in more than 43 countries, thus impacting millions
of users across the world.”
in what way has nyenrode contributed to your
development?
“Nyenrode provided me with this wonderful foundation
that has made me very much aware of what it means
to work across countries and cultures. With increased
globalization, today’s world has clearly become much
‘smaller’ than it was 25 years ago, but the reality remains
that doing business in Japan is a completely different thing
from doing business in Brazil, for instance. To be effective,
one needs to adapt cross-culturally. I vividly remember
the cross-cultural (language) training course that has truly
helped me in becoming successful, especially in the early

Nyenrode’s strategy rationale involves engaging our students in doing business in a
complex and highly interconnected global environment. This has been ingrained in our
DNA as of the university’s inception in 1946. It means that we prepare our students for
responding to challenges in the global business environment on the basis of our threepillar concept: Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Stewardship. In close cooperation with
our institutional partners in Asia, Africa, the United States and Europe, we are able to
offer our students a unique educational experience. Our partners include the University
of Oregon – Lundquist College of Business (USA), the University of Stellenbosch Business
School (South Africa), S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (India), Renmin
University (China) and the University of Cambridge Judge Business School (UK). Nyenrode
is particularly focused on targeting emerging markets, as these countries are expected
make important contributions to future global economic growth. Together with our
international partners and a number of (non-profit) organizations operating in their
countries, Nyenrode Business Universiteit is developing – or has already designed –
a varied number of inspirational modules, programs and educational visits.

On March 25, 2014, Nyenrode and Renmin University in Beijing signed a Memorandum of Agreement to intensify
collaboration between the two universities. Renmin University ranks among China’s top three universities. During
the visit to Beijing, Nyenrode’s Associate Dean of Degree Programs Prof. Désirée van Gorp was accompanied by
Dr. Wim Kok, the former Prime Minister of the Netherlands and Nyenrode alumnus. Professor Van Gorp was also
appointed as Visiting Professor at Renmin University of China. Nyenrode and Renmin University intend to develop
exchange programs for MBA and MSc students and alumni from both countries. To underscore the importance of
such programs, Nyenrode Executive and International MBA students plan to visit Renmin Business School in June
2015 for a two-week global immersion program. The new MBA module will provide students with a comprehensive
overview of one of the world’s largest and fastest growing economies, and it will help them understand the massive
changes currently witnessed in global economic systems and relationships.

Every year, students enrolled in the International MBA program embark on a
journey to Asia. Their primary goal is to experience and become acquainted
with the dynamics of business activities in different continents in relation to the
Western world. In 2014, 24 students visited China. The China module included a
journey to Shanghai and visits to multinational companies as well as state-owned
and private Chinese companies. The business trip was kicked off by visiting ING
Bank’s offices in one of the skyscrapers in the Pudong area. During the visit,
Nyenrode alumni Piter De Jong LL.M., Managing Director and Branch Manager at
ING Bank Shanghai, Ms. Dan ZHU, Board Member of the European Union Chamber

2006, the Nyenrode New Business School
in Amsterdam (NNBS) has run a special
education project as part of its curriculum
that is aimed at educating underprivileged
children in India and building a goodquality school infrastructure.
Together with ROUND TABLE India, NNBS supports a
project entitled ‘Freedom Through Education’ (FTE). Within
the framework of this project, ROUND TABLE India has so
far built 1,800 new schools and 6,000 extra classrooms, as
a result of which more than five million underprivileged
children can now have an education and face a brighter
future. As part of NNBS’s Project Management course,
students design, plan and host a special fundraising event
to collect money for the Indian FTE project so that new
schools can be built or existing ones expanded. The project
also includes a one-week study trip to India; the most recent
one was organized in November 2014, when 94 students
visited a number of leading universities and followed
classes on business issues, demographic and economic
developments as well as business opportunities to be found
in India. In addition, the students paid visits to a number of
FTE schools in the region.

For Nyenrode, having an international focus and strongly developed international
networks is a sine qua non: it is a condition for being relevant to all parties involved with
the university, be they stakeholders, students, faculty, educational partners or client
organizations. Only a business school with a strong international outlook can attract
talented and internationally minded people. In today’s globalizing world, students and
business professionals need to be well prepared to become effective members of that
global community. Nyenrode’s faculty is ideally equipped for doing just that. Many
projects are run in close collaboration with the university’s international networks, be it
in the form of stimulation and exchange projects, guest lectures and honorary doctorates,
the publication of books and dissertations or dedicated study visits.

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in
Dhaka has partnered with Nyenrode in order to stimulate
economic relations between the Netherlands and
Bangladesh. The Nyenrode part of the project is run by
Prof. Désirée van Gorp and her team. With a focus on
agri-business, water, logistics and ICT sectors, the years
2013 and 2014 were eventful years for the Bangladesh
Trade & Investment Project. As Ambassador to the
Netherlands in Bangladesh Gerben de Jong explains:
“This project is a seamless fit with the Nyenrode motto
‘for business, by business’. If you want to strengthen the
private sector in a country like Bangladesh, then you need
to consult the private sector itself on how to do it”.

The project started with the launch of the Netherlands

to economic information and serves as an instrument
to boost trade. Four sector studies on agri-business,
water, logistics and ICT were published and presented
during sector meetings at Nyenrode which were
aimed at informing the Dutch business community on
the economic, political and social developments in
Bangladesh. In the past two years and in cooperation
with the Embassy, Nyenrode has organized three
trade missions to Dhaka and two trade missions to
the Netherlands with the aim to explore business
opportunities in the focus industries. Since the start of
the partnership in 2012, ten Dutch companies have set up
businesses or invested in Bangladesh with direct support

The Nyenrode Europe China Institute (NECI) was established in 2008 to provide support and assistance to
internationally operating companies. It aims to help these firms create or re-energize their business strategy
in China and share up-to-date information concerning the latest Chinese investment trends, their (expected)
consequences in Europe and their general impact on the West.
The NECI serves as one of the leading Dutch institutes in
the field of EU-China economic and business relations.
The NECI has taken the lead in creating a knowledgesharing platform and network via the ‘Thought Leadership

meetings led by business leaders and representatives
from academia. The NECI has also developed a number
of China immersion programs for the Nyenrode degree

the way in which China operates as an emerging market
and an important global market player. Furthermore,
several programs have been developed for the benefit
of executive education, including training programs

Eastern &
Western
strategies
by Prof. Dr. Bob de Wit
Tuesday July 1, 2014 marked the official presentation of the latest
edition of Strategy: Content, Process, Context, written by Nyenrode
Professor of Strategic Leadership Bob de Wit. Today, this excellent
publication has become the world’s number three best-selling book
on strategy: more than 300 universities in 60 different countries
use it. What is new, however, is that the author shows how Eastern
strategy concepts can make important contributions to strategic
thinking and decision making. Here, we see a difference with most
traditional business literature, which tends to place a main focus on
Western knowledge. In Strategy: Content, Process, Context, Bob de
Wit demonstrates that in order to obtain a true understanding of
businesses and of what it takes to be successful, we need to transcend
the boundaries set by our own perspectives, be they Western
or Eastern. Only then can we determine our own strengths and
weaknesses and can true synthesis become a fact: we will then have
achieved ‘the best of both worlds’. In his book, de Wit demonstrates
that the rational Western approach to strategic thinking is mainly
inspired by Descartes, while the more holistic principles followed
in the East stem from the ideas developed by Confucius. Although
upon first glance, both perspectives would seem to be opposites and
suitable only for different parts of the world, each of them can add
precious value to the other. With their individual characteristics and
their own specific appeals to logic and intuition, both approaches
may offer valuable contributions to strategic thinking and decisionmaking. This is precisely why the book refuses to see them as
opposites but rather discusses them as two sides of the same coin.
The fifth edition of Strategy: Content, Process, Context was launched
and discussed during a seminar held at Nyenrode and entitled ‘Strategy
5.0. Enlightened learning for the shifting global reality’. In addition,
contributions were made by Jiazhong Wang from Standard Tael, Fred van
Beuningen from Rotterdam Partners and Dr. Debashish Bhattacharjee
from Tata Steel, who spoke about their professional experience with various
strategic concepts from the East and West. The seminar was chaired by
Dr. Jeroen van der Velden, Director of the Nyenrode Strategy Center.

to the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, a critical way of thinking
that supports the identification of opportunities and matches these
against resources. The consecutive Portland week built on the Eugene

to Capgemini Corporate University ‘Les
Fontaines’ in Chantilly, Paris, for two days
of stimulating talks and discussion. With its
module Information & Innovation, Nyenrode
aims to prepare students for jobs that do
not exist yet but which undoubtedly will; in
other words, we help these students create
a competitive advantage for themselves in
today’s information age. Nyenrode believes
this is important in a world where talent has
to compete on a global scale and in which
it is key for businesses to have access to
a pool of talented individuals who know
how to respond to future challenges. The
module was concluded with a dragons’ den
style round of presentations delivered by
the EMBA12 participants, who pitched their
ideas about ways in which new technology
can provide a competitive advantage for the
companies they work for. These dynamic and
inspirational discussions, which took place
in Les Fontaines’ contemporary, purposebuilt work spaces, were interspersed with
classic French cuisine and relaxation in
the Rothschild Château, set in the heart of
a 130-acre woodland park.

For Nyenrode, cooperation with universities in other countries is of key importance.
It allows faculty members to exchange ideas and learn from each other’s education
methods and approaches to student guidance and counselling. In addition, it offers
promising opportunities in terms of research collaboration and the development of crosscultural knowledge. The latter is particularly important for those who wish to build an
international career. Nyenrode regularly welcomes visiting professors, and a number of
Nyenrode faculty travel the world to teach students from foreign universities, as a result
of which new and special relationships are built.

for a U.S. organization in an international setting, and
was then a U.S. diplomat for 26 years, serving primarily
70 countries, on all continents, and I spent nearly 35
years outside the U.S., including 8 years in China. In my
classes, I mix my academic training with this worldwide
experience. It is important to have a strong theoretical
foundation in all university material, but through cases
and real-life examples, I mix the theoretical with the
practical side of doing business. This also includes
challenging the students, most of whom also have strong
international experience, to bring their own examples
into the classroom. This makes case-based discussions
highly collaborative. Also, while it is certainly necessary
to understand various cultures, the primary reason for
any business is to maximize benefit for its stakeholders.
Because of this, we look at international culture in the
setting of fostering that goal. Understanding culture is
seen in the context of creating a successful marketing
and business model. The cosmopolitan and international
nature of Nyenrode’s students has certainly contributed
to this goal. Each class brings a multitude of perspectives
to each of the questions studied. Not only do the
students have broad experience, but they are willing to
share this experience with the class. For me, this always
makes teaching at Nyenrode an interesting and rewarding
experience.”

Together with co-author D. van Welsum, Prof. Dr. Désirée van Gorp has written a chapter about offshoring in
Europe, in particular in the Netherlands, which is included in the Oxford Handbook of Offshoring and Global
Employment. The book brings together a number of authors from different countries, who shed light on the
impact of global economic developments on the labor market, seen from various academic and policy perspectives.
With contributions from scholars in developing as well as developed countries, the book discusses the ways
in which different forms of offshoring influence employment. It has recently become available on the market
and has already received promising reviews. As AnnaLee Saxenian, Dean and Professor at UC Berkeley School of
Information puts it: “This Handbook offers the most authoritative and comprehensive look at the fast changing
contours of global employment available today. Scholars from around the world provide empirical insights and
theoretical clarity into the often-politicized discussions of offshoring and globalization – including detailed case
studies from more than fifteen countries. This will be an invaluable resource for both teaching and scholarship.”

Management written by Marie-Joëlle Browaeys (Assistant
Professor Cross-cultural Management at Nyenrode) and Roger

models and ideas on culture in terms of management,
organizations and communication. It combines a concise
overview of cross-cultural concepts and learning-by-doing
activities as an approach to cross-cultural management. The
book contains contributions made by Fons Trompenaars and
alumni from degree programs (IMBA and FTMSc) offered at
Nyenrode Business Universiteit. It is sold internationally in

Prof. Dr. Henry Robben
“Together with professors Rudy Moenaert (TIAS School for Society and Business, Tilburg, the Netherlands) and

companies in Western Europe. We investigate how companies can create competitive advantage in terms of the
resources they use, how trends and developments affect their marketing strategies, the core marketing processes
they need to invest in, and how factors such as market vision, marketing execution, the development of marketing
professionals, the use of marketing intelligence and the use of marketing metrics affect a company’s current and
future performance. Results appear to be quite robust over the years and across business-to-business, businessto-consumer, manufacturing and service companies.”

This part of the book deals with my own research
and personal international experiences. For me,
2014 was a very special international year as my
academic work and my educational activities took
me around the globe on visits to Russia, Denmark,
Italy, China and the United States. A brief account
of my travels follows below.
My first academic trip of 2014 was in February, when
I visited Moscow. As Visiting Professor to Moscow
State University’s prestigious Business School, I was
honoured to deliver a course on Corporate Finance. The
impressive building featured in the photograph houses
the university. I had visited it before, but that was in May,
when the sun shines often and temperatures are generally
very agreeable. February is different. Snowfall can be
abundant.
Once I had returned from Moscow, I quickly re-packed my
bags for a visit to China, accompanied by my Nyenrode
colleagues Dr. Jianhong Zhang, Associate Professor of
International Economics and Business, and Prof. Dr.
Leen Paape, Dean and member of Nyenrode’s University
Board. The purpose of this trip was to visit a number of
universities for discussions about possible partnerships
and collaboration projects and for a meeting with

On Sunday June 15, 2014, scholars and governance professionals from
all over the world gathered at Nyenrode to attend the first Academic
Meeting preceding the Annual Meeting of the International Corporate
Governance Network (ICGN) held in Amsterdam during that year.
The Nyenrode Corporate Governance Institute (NCGI) was the proud host.
ICGN is a global investor-led organization of governance professionals
responsible for assets under management in excess of US$18 trillion.
ICGN’s mission is to inspire and promote effective standards of corporate
governance to advance efficient markets and economies worldwide.
The ICGN Academic Meeting was attended by 60 corporate governance
practitioners and academics from all over the world, including
representatives from Harvard, Kellogg and London Business School.
During the Academic Meeting, seven academic papers were presented and
discussed. The occasion also provided a unique opportunity for scholars
to enhance the quality and impact of their scholarly work by meeting with
practitioners and exchanging ideas and information with insiders from the
institutional investment field. The Academic Meeting was hosted by Prof.
Dr. Leen Paape, Dean of Nyenrode Business Universiteit, and Dr. Daniëlle
Melis MBA, Chair of the Nyenrode Corporate Governance Institute (NCGI)
and Deloitte scholar and member of the ICGN Shareholder Responsibilities

Committee. The meeting was organized in close cooperation with the HHL
Graduate School of Management, Leipzig (Germany) and the LL.M. Program
in Banking and Securities Law at the Institute for Financial Services,
University of Liechtenstein. Daniëlle Melis: “The NCGI aims to promote
research, education and informed opinion and debate. Hosting the ICGN
Academic Meeting was inspiring and contributed to NCGI’s overall mission.
It contributed on a high level to the international academic debate about
the relatively young discipline of Corporate Governance.”

Auditing in an
International
Perspective
“Nyenrode Business Universiiteit offers great opportunities to

conduct relevant research in the field of Auditing. One of the
main challenges in this field is collecting data from audit firms
in order to analyze auditor behavior and decision-making.
Nyenrode Accountancy students, however, work for audit firms
and are allowed by the Dutch audit firms to collect information
from audit engagement files based on questionnaires. This data
regarding audit planning, risk assessment, error detection and
auditor reporting is unique in the world. Therefore, well-known
auditing researchers like Arnie Wright, visiting professor of
Nyenrode and Senior Professor of Auditing at the Northeastern
University in Boston are highly interested in cooperating in
our research. Other visiting scholars include Monika Causholli
from Kentucky State University in the United States, who
came to Nyenrode in the spring of 2014, and Prof. Christopher
Koch from Mainz University in Germany. Our research working
papers are well received at the leading international accounting
and auditing conferences. Together with these international
scholars, we cooperate on multiple projects with much
pleasure. The work is extremely stimulating and challenging,
because all of us are highly focused on getting our work
published in the top academic journals. Our current research
topics include audit quality and audit methodology, especially
aimed at audit partner behavior. These topics are very timely,
given today’s debate on audit quality in the auditing profession
itself and with respect to the legislative actions taken by

governments to enhance audit quality. Other current research
includes a study concerning the implementation of new audit
methodology, based on interviews with partners of 38 German
and Dutch small and medium-sized audit firms.”

for Entrepreneurship. As of January 1, 2015, she also acts as a
visiting professor to the Institute of Finance and International
Management (IFIM) in Bangalore, India, and she works as
a consultant for Praan Solutions. Over the past year, Dr.
Nandram looked behind the scenes of Buurtzorg Nederland
to learn about its organizational processes and the ways in
which its staff members and professionals work together.
Buurtzorg Nederland has an extremely flat organizational
structure and is known for its highly client-oriented approach.
In this organization’s activities, satisfying the needs of its
clients and ensuring that they maintain the highest possible
level of autonomy are key elements. Buurtzorg Nederland has
received considerable international attention for its innovative
approach. Sharda Nandram investigated, among other
things, leadership within Buurtzorg Nederland, its decisionmaking powers and processes as well as the structure of the
organization’s HR and ICT departments. In her work, she
applied the Grounded Theory Methodology, a research method
that leads to the formation of new theories. This allows for the
principles derived from it to be used by management in a wide
range of applications. Dr. Nandram calls her theory ‘Integrating
Simplification’.

Book ‘Lean IT
Partnering’
How may IT partners in their cooperation with service sector
organizations create value and profit with the Lean method? In
his book Lean IT Partnering, Prof. Dr. Han van der Zee, former
Head of the research cluster ‘Lean Transformation with and
in IT’ at the Nyenrode Lean Institute, answers this question
on the basis of insights from international academic research
and a number of case studies. The Nyenrode Lean Institute
is an initiative developed by Nyenrode in collaboration with
ABN AMRO, Achmea and McKinsey & Company. Its aim is to
promote and enhance organizational innovation and excellence
through development and training by applying the Lean
Management theory.
The Lean concept is an effective and efficient tool to do
‘more’ with ‘less’ while simultaneously increasing productivity,
improving quality for greater customer satisfaction
and achieving a better competitive advantage. Author
Prof. Dr. Han van der Zee about the book: “More and more IT
suppliers and users of IT services are beginning to recognize
the importance of going Lean, and many of them have started
to apply the philosophy in their strategies. So far, however,
only very few examples have become available that illustrate
the successful application of this concept in IT partnerships.
Becoming lean takes a lot of hard work and intensive
cooperation between partners. Success does not come easy,
but there is so much more that can be achieved.”
The book Lean IT Partnering - How partners create value by
developing a Lean culture for IT supply and management was
launched during an inspirational afternoon workshop on the topic
‘Lean with Leadership’ held at Nyenrode Lean Institute on
May 20, 2014.
