The strategy 2020, as approved by all stakeholders, is a good guidance for the coming years. The goals set challenge us to give our best and cooperate closely with colleagues, alumni and other stakeholders. It will require continuous and from time to time, meticulous implementation. The goal is to position ourselves in the top of European business schools and that is an audacious ambition. Among many things, it requires focusing on a limited number of areas, enhancing research and creating room for new services and value propositions at the same time. This process of simultaneously focusing and investing is essential for the coming years and indeed quite a challenge! Cooperation at international level with businesses and universities outside the Netherlands requires special attention in the coming years. Developing such a profitable network for all stakeholders in an educational market that is changing rapidly started in 2014 with some existing partners in the USA and South Africa, and new ones in China and India. While 2013 shows some new and splendid lecture rooms, 2014 and the coming years will be characterized by new and exciting teaching techniques. BKO (Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs: basic qualification education) was implemented in full speed, and some additional opportunities for the faculty to expand their experience have been created. Flipped Classroom, blended learning and methodology workshops were organized. It is amazing how much experience and knowledge is available within the Nyenrode faculty. Introducing new things is fine but the low-hanging fruit is in the exchange of what we already have, and therefore a priority. The Nyenrode New Business School in Amsterdam went through turbulent times in the last few months of this year. The growth of the school brings it into another phase requiring a new, fitting strategy, operations and interaction with the university. This will be accomplished under new management, and Nyenrode will support and guide the school trough the interim period of several months. In the past year, we started to enhance our relationship with Nyenrode alumni throughout the world. Having Nyenrode Alumni VCV closely collaborating with the university is an enormous advantage, but the university has to take care of the alumni population in general. That process has just started with the introduction of a monthly newsletter and there is much more still to come. The contribution of our alumni in scholarships, estate and building, but also in coaching and helping our students is unique and invaluable for the Nyenrode community. Finally, all these activities had an impact on the financial outcome of the university resulting in a loss for 2014. However, we feel that the activities and investment will assure a financially healthy 2014-2015 academic year. An increase in the number of students in almost all our programs is promising and a clear sign that Nyenrode is on the right track. Nyenrode year overview 2014 1 2 Kristian Thelen Executive Master of Finance & Control Place a dot on the horizon for yourself. Where do you want to go? What is your ultimate goal? The Executive Master of Finance & Control (EMFC) program can be a very good addition to the path that you are following to arrive at that point. Should the EMFC program actually lie along your path then Nyenrode university is an excellent partner to attain this goal. A partner where you receive a personal approach in addition to a high quality education. The special feeling that I get from Nyenrode ensures that I can get the most out of myself. In addition to the quality of the level of education, the approach and the organization are very professional and personal. Because of the smaller classes and Nyenrode’s personal approach, you never have view the feeling that you are a number, with layar you really feel part of the whole. Nyenrode year overview 2014 3 view with layar RE TURN ON EDUC ATION Nyenrode Business Universiteit has launched a marketing campaign with the theme, ‘Return on Education’, aimed at senior managers, directors, professionals and HR managers. In the campaign Nyenrode alumni describe the impact on them both personally and professionally, of the executive education program they followed. The campaign runs for three months and is conducted in newspapers, radio and the social media on the internet. Together with the campaign, the overall brochure for Nyenrode’s entire executive education training range is introduced. It’s good to see that significant headway is now being made with its roll-out. The strategy has received a positive welcome within the organisation and everyone understands its underlying fundamentals. The strategy, as formulated by the University Board, has been translated into firm goals for the coming years and agreed with the Supervisory Board and the center directors. As part of this process, everyone has been invited to convert strategy into viable components. In the meantime, strategic goals have been translated into actions by the various groups and, I’m happy to report, their implementation is currently in progress and already producing results. For example, the number of academic publications has far exceeded the initial targets, innumerable excellent initiatives have been launched in the field of new services, and many new opportunities have been opening up for cooperation at an international level. At the Nyenrode Lean Institute, cooperating partners are keen to renew the contract, which has been another welcome boost. I feel this accurately reflects the way in which Nyenrode is working together with its partners in the business community in bringing about results in the field of education and development.” 6 “In short, when it comes to fleshing out the strategy, once again the many parts of the organisation have been demonstrating their boundless energy. However, I can’t easily allow myself to wallow in this satisfaction, since things can always be done better and more quickly. The challenge is for everyone to stay alert, keep a critical eye and continue striving towards the very best. Nowadays, accountability and a focus on results are key themes among organizations, and that applies equally to us. In this Year Overview, the various quartermasters have provided us with a brief insight into their approach to the strategic themes and the progress they have made so far. From the bars and campus supermarket to the international study trip and case competition team: all is fully managed by students for students, putting stewardship at the core of our association.” FACTS & FIGURES JONGSTE COMPAGNIE VAN VERRE (JCV) • Founded on September 30, 2011 •Official legal approval of JCV chart: December 2, 2013 • Members: 144 • Number of committees: 19 IV Collegie der Raedt van V ’14: “The JCV is still a young student association, but is growing rapidly and so are the norms and values of the student association. The “Jongste Compagnie van Verre” implements the core value stewardship/responsible business by using charity in many occasions. The JCV has a committee which has the mission to implement charity in many of our events, from rally’s to galas and from social gatherings to guest lectures. The money we raise is donated to funds who really can make big changes with little resources.” Winston Churchill - “Responsibility is the price of greatness”. Nyenrode year overview 2014 7 FACTS & FIGURES VERENIGING VAN ACCOUNTANCYSTUDENTEN (VAS) • Founded in 1971 • About 2,500 members •3 bodies: Student Council, Activity Committee and Editorial Office •Board existing of four members Board Vereniging van Accountancystudenten (VAS): “Stewardship expresses itself in the VAS as a major everyday effort on behalf of all accountancy students in the Netherlands. The VAS promotes the interests of all accountancy students in the broadest sense of the word, and does its absolute best to make student voices count. Alongside their own busy careers and studies, the active VAS members work on behalf of other students, among other things by: • Working with and contributing to the academic shaping of students • Helping students to get the best from themselves • Working with and contributing to developments within the accountancy profession • Above all, doing everything possible to achieve a healthy work-life balance” 8 STR ATEGY 2020 To be the preferred partner for students and organizations Realizing our ambitions for growth requires Nyenrode to improve its connectivity with the market. To achieve this, Nyenrode aims to become the preferred partner for businesses and students alike. With regard to the former, this entails installing account management for the top 10-15 accounts. As for the latter, a lasting bond with students through the values of the LES trinity needs to be created, which should be apparent both in teaching, as well as in the Nyenrode experience. Nyenrode as a university must maintain strong bonds with its alumni. Both these efforts are aimed at fostering new business initiatives, such as the Nyenrode Corporate Governance Institute (NCGI), where large companies become involved in research that brings about solutions to real-life problems and issues to enable the organization and its staff to deal with them. Establishing new services like Organizational Development in connection to businesses is one of the key contributors to this aspired growth. Whilst we have witnessed a growth in turnover, profit margins are lagging behind, so this issue requires addressing. We intend to harness account management more and appoint a professional who can devote his or her attention fully to this. In addition, top accounts have been identified and visited by Nyenrode. In particular, for Accountancy, the extra focus on top accounts, under the guidance of program director Olof Bik, has been proving successful. The number of students has increased as a result. We can quite rightly say that Nyenrode has become the preferred partner for students. The LES trinity has been integrated in existing programs, with International and Executive MBA director Christo Nel playing a key role. We will be developing an alumni policy for all Nyenrode graduates. We will be addressing this issue together with the Nyenrode Alumni VCV, under the charge of Kees de Kluijver, alumnus and Dean of University of Oregon Lundquist College of Business. Our view is that there is always a bond with Nyenrode alumni. Our aim is to reinforce this. We are heading in the right direction. Parallel to this, we are making headway with the integrated marketing strategy, where the input of Customer Relationship Management is central. Nyenrode year overview 2014 9 EDUC ATION FACTS & FIGURES DEGREE EDUCATION •In 2013-2014, about 4,750 students were following one of the programs at Nyenrode Business Universiteit (not including BBA students at the Nyenrode New Business School in Amsterdam). Most of them studied part-time at Nyenrode. She succeeded André Nijhof, who will continue his career at Nyenrode as a lecturer, thesis supervisor, and researcher in the field of sustainable business. Hetty van Roozendaal was previously at Nyenrode between 2000 and 2005, working as Managing Director (employed by the University of Amsterdam) of Amsterdam Nyenrode Law School. “When I arrived at Nyenrode this summer I found a very intensive MSc in Management program, a program where students are challenged both academically as well as in terms of their personal and professional development,” tells Hetty van Roozendaal. “André Nijhof in his time as program director has built a stable curriculum with emphasis on Nyenrode’s key values of Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Stewardship. He also embedded personal and professional development in the program, and he increased the inflow of students and worked on the relation with the student association Nieuwe Compagnie van Verre.” Additional internship “My job now is to take this further. First we need to gear the program even more closely toward the first steps that the students take on the labor market. Of course students come to Nyenrode chiefly to help them find a good job after they graduate. Most students find a job very shortly after they graduate, if not during their studies. Nevertheless, we want to offer students the possibility to complete an additional 6-month internship during their studies, to further improve their CV and skills. This means that students will be able 12 to graduate after 12 months, but with this internship also after 18 months. We want to involve student association NCV and Nyenrode Alumni VCV in this. This addition to the curriculum will make it even more a program ‘for business, by business’, with an extra focus on putting responsible people on the labor market.” Students become trainees “Another adaption we will make is that students must hand in individual theses instead of working together in small teams on their master’s theses. We will also reduce the number of ECTS in the program. At the moment our program is very full in terms of credits: 77 ECTS, compared with 60 ECTS for most regular Master’s degree programs. Certain courses that we feel are important but that are not academic, for example personal and professional development, will be removed from the actual degree program and included in a traineeship program at Nyenrode that students must complete parallel to their studies. Previously those elements were mixed together in the curriculum.” “So the new MSc 24 intake next year will arrive as trainees studying for an academic Master’s degree. This means that not only their results for courses will be assessed, but also their professional attitude. Do they keep their promises? Are they on time for lectures and tutorials? Do they contribute to a healthy and clean study environment? When these students have completed their studies, they will be awarded not only an academic Master’s degree but also a certificate that testifies about their practical experience in a business environment. This trainee certificate is an extra on top of the academic diploma.” KEY INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS Nyenrode’s strategy rationale involves engaging our students in doing business in a complex and highly interconnected global environment. This is ingrained in our DNA as of 1946. It means that we prepare our students for responding to challenges in the global business environment based on the 3 pillar concept of: Leadership, Entrepreneurship & Stewardship. In close cooperation with our institutional partners in Asia, Africa, United States, and Europe we are able to offer our students a unique educational experience. They include the University of Oregon – Lundquist College of Business (USA), the University of Stellenbosch Business School (South Africa), S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research (India), Renmin University (China), and the University of Cambridge Judge Business School (UK). Nyenrode is targeting emerging markets in particular as these countries will make an important contribution to the global economic growth in the future. Collaboration with Renmin University On March 25, 2014, Nyenrode and Renmin University in Beijing signed a Memorandum of Agreement to intensify the collaboration between both universities. Renmin University is among the top three Chinese universities. Nyenrode’s Associate Dean of Degree Programs Professor Désirée van Gorp was accompanied by Dr. Wim Kok, former Prime Minister of the Netherlands and a Nyenrode alumnus. Both universities will begin developing possible exchange programs for the MBA and MSc students and alumni from both countries. For instance, starting in June 2015, Nyenrode Executive and International MBA students will visit Renmin Business School for a two- week Global Immersion Program in China. This new MBA module provides students with a comprehensive overview on one of today’s largest and fastest growing economies of the world, and helps them to develop an understanding about the massive changes in global economic systems and relationships. Professor Van Gorp was also appointed as Visiting Professor at the Renmin University of China. Chang Gung University On March 13, 2014, Nyenrode and the College of Management of Chang Gung University, Taiwan, signed a cooperation agreement stating that the two universities wish to enhance the relations Nyenrode year overview 2014 13 between each other and to develop academic and cultural interchange in the areas of education, research, and other activities. The parties agreed to extensively cooperate in the next two years and explore the possibilities towards the internationalization of higher education. The areas of cooperation are: exchange of faculty, researchers and students, provide full and/or partial tuition waivers for qualified students, joint research projects, conferences and cultural programs and the exchange of academic materials, publications, and other documentation. Red Cross Scholarship After growing up in Jordan, Ahmad Hallak had a career in business finance. For ten years, he worked at several companies in Jordan. Wanting to do something different, Ahmad decided to join the International Red Cross in 2011. This eventually led him to undertake humanitarian missions in Darfur and Iraq. It was on his first mission that he came across information about a Red Cross Scholarship opportunity for an International MBA at Nyenrode Business Universiteit. As a qualified candidate he actually won the full-tuition scholarship and started his study at Nyenrode in 2013. view with layar PART-TIME MSC IN MANAGEMENT STUDY TRIP TO BRAZIL In September 2014, students of Part-Time MSc In Management 17 went on a study trip to Sao Paulo, Brazil, for their International Business & Economic Environment course. EU mobility program Nyenrode participates in Erasmus+, the new mobility program of the European Union for students and staff of educational institutes. The objective of Erasmus+ is to promote international cooperation through the mobility of students and staff. The EU program Erasmus+ will run from 2007 to 2013, and follows on from Erasmus Life Long Learning, 14 that ran from 2007-2013. In the academic year 2013-2014, 53 students of Nyenrode New Business School studied for four months at Westminster University in London as part of the Erasmus Life Long Learning mobility program. Study Group collaboration Nyenrode collaborates with Study Group regarding the preparation of students for CR E ATE YO U R OW N M B A W W W . C R E AT E YO U R O W N M B A . N L BUSINESS & IT FOOD & FINANCE degree programs. The Study Group students follow various preparatory programs with which they can make up for any deficiencies with regard to their English language skills or other skills. After successfully finishing these programs, they can continue their education at Bachelor or Master level at Nyenrode or at one of the other Dutch universities with which Study Group collaborates. In 2013, Study Group’s Holland International Study Centre moved to Amsterdam where they now have accommodation at the Nyenrode New Business School. Initially, the Study Group students lived on the Nyenrode campus during their course. Three Directors Tracks MMBA During the academic year Nyenrode appointed directors for the three tracks of the Modular Executive MBA. Dr. Rob Poels is the director of the Modular Executive MBA in Business & IT. Poels holds this position in addition to his position as a partner of Twynstra Gudde, where he is responsible for the consultancy group’s ICT strategy and architecture. The new director of the Modular Executive MBA in Public & Private is Prof. Dr. Siem Korver. He is also professor of Food, Farming & Agribusiness at Tilburg University. The third director is Dr. Albert Jan Stam. He was appointed as director PUBLIC & PRIVATE of the Modular Executive MBA in Public & Private in July 2014. Stam combines this post with his position as associate partner at Berenschot, where he focuses on the fields of meaningfulness, leadership, organization development and collaboration. MBA Composing Tool In March 2014, Nyenrode launched the first online MBA composing tool in the world. This tool gives potential students complete control when putting together their own Modular Executive MBA program. They can compile their own program from separate modules at www. createyourownmba.nl. In video messages accompanying the tool, students and lecturers relate their experiences with the modules. view with layar Dealing with cybercrime How do you deal with cybercrime as a company? How do you become cyber resilient and can you ensure that your sensitive company information doesn’t simply go public? Jan Veldsink is core lecturer of the module in the Modular Executive MBA in Business & IT: Business & Cyber Resilience. He explains about the module: “Dealing with cybercrime is not just an ICT problem. You have to prepare your organization properly for it.” Nyenrode year overview 2014 15 These customized plans enable an efficient entry and study duration by ensuring that the program is aligned with the employer’s internal training and development programs. Start Master of Fiscal Law The field in which a tax specialist works is changing a lot. Now that the Tax and Customs Administration (Belastingdienst) has introduced Horizontal Supervision, tax specialists have been given a new role. On September 4, 2014, 32 students began the Master of Fiscal Law program. With this master’s program, they will acquire the necessary theoretical knowledge and learn to apply this knowledge in practice in order to be able to fulfill this role professionally and capably. The professionalizing of personal skills is therefore a constant area of focus throughout the program. The Accreditation Organization of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO) accredited the Master of Fiscal Law program on September 26, 2013. More accountancy students 358 Students started their accountancy program at Nyenrode in the fall of 2014. This represents a 27% increase compared to last year. A number of these students follow the Post Master Custom-Made program for new entrants with a master’s diploma. They receive a personal study plan whereby they can choose from various programs. The length of the program depends on the integrated study plans that Nyenrode has put together with the employers of the students. 16 Essay Prize Accountancy & Controlling Winfred Merkus won the Essay Prize Accountancy & Controlling 2012-2013 with his essay “The quality of audits substandard?” The essay that is based on his master’s thesis deals with Euro Commissioner Barnier’s proposal for the introduction of a joint audit, whereby the financial statements are audited by a combination of two accountancy firms. Based on his research, Merkus was not able to demonstrate that a joint audit would result in a higher quality of the audit. Four graduate students were nominated for the essay prize. Strong ties with accountancy employers Nyenrode is constantly working on further strengthening the cooperation with accountancy firms, the employers of our accountancy students. We do this by means of agreements about integrated study plans, the three-party agreement that makes it possible for the university and the employer to exchange more information, and the alignment of internal and external training programs. This benefits the students, the accountancy firm and Nyenrode as we are thus better able to gear our programs to the students’ specific educational requirements and the time that students can devote to studying. Bachelor Accountancy with 11 As (or 10s) Peter Moerbeek obtained his Bachelor of Science in Accountancy with 11 As (or 10s according to the Dutch grading system). “Actually, I didn’t really do anything special. When, I’m working on a subject, I just want to understand it.” He accelerated the last part of his bachelor’s program by writing his final paper in the summer period. Peter doesn’t feel that he actually spent a lot more time studying than his colleagues and fellow students. “I do think that it might be easier for me to apply the theory during an exam than it is for other students. The makers of the exams do try and confuse you a bit.” Excellent accountancy students The 25 best students of the accountancy program were invited to a Round Table session with Hans Koopmans on May 14, 2014. Koopmans is a partner at PwC Singapore and the chairman of PwC’s Global Auditing Committee. Together they discussed his personal motivation as well as cultural differences and how to deal with these differences as an international accountant. About accountancy Koopmans says: “This is a profession in which you are important for society.” The session increased the students awareness that it is good to look beyond borders. Two extremely fast accountancy students Albert Jan van Olst and Tjibbe Bosman received an award because they both completed the whole theoretical accountancy program, Bachelor, Master and Post Master, as the fastest students ever in five years and three months and five years and four months respectively. Tjibbe and Albert Jan have a few tips for students who wish to study faster than they are doing now: plan far ahead, preferably a year, and plan free days on strategic dates in consultation with your employer. Then it is matter of structure, discipline and a supportive home front. The developments in the course program, the course philosophy and innovations in education were among the subjects discussed. The Association of Accountancy Students (VAS) awarded the VAS prize for the best accountancy idea 2013-2014 to the customizable course programs in the Master and Post Master Accountancy. Guest speaker Steven ten Have, Professor Strategy & Change at the VU and Nyenrode alumnus, concluded the seminar with an interactive session about the psychology and the ability to change of the accountancy student. The previous seminar for Accountancy & Controlling lecturers took place on September 17, 2013, and its theme was ‘The Robust Student’. The guest speaker at this seminar was former soccer goalkeeper Hans van Breukelen. STZ Learning Community for operational managers STZ, the association of 28 large teaching hospitals in the Netherlands, providing highly specialized medical care, has developed in co-creation with Nyenrode a learning community for operational managers of the different hospitals. The program focuses on the current transition in healthcare and its impact on operational management. The participants are challenged to integrate and translate the strategic goals of their hospitals to a coherent set of organizational processes and to support their professionals to take 20 the lead in a context of new paradigms. Beside a workshop and three conferences, participants also form a virtual community. Nyenrode year overview 2014 23 New Team Nyenrode New Board Program In the New Board Program (NBP) Dr. Daniëlle Melis and Jan Maarten Slagter LLM have taken over the reins from September 1st, 2014, from Prof. Fred Lachotzki and Drs. Marjan Lubbers MSOD. Melis is the new academic director of the program, while Slagter is the new program director. “Naturally we have a splendid position from which to start,” explains Jan Maarten Slagter. “The program is as solid as a rock, and Marjan and Fred will continue to be closely involved in the near future. We will be able to work towards the future and can continue to evolve the program.” “At this time the relevance of the New Board Program is more urgent than ever; demand continues to be high,” notes Daniëlle Melis. “All the more reason to get to work with even more energy and enthusiasm.” Daniëlle Melis, who also chairs the Nyenrode Corporate Governance Institute, continues: “The NBP corporate governance program is one of Nyenrode’s flagships. In dialog with recent participants we have drawn up an inventory of the points where we can evolve the program. Participants appear to want even more scope to introduce their own casuistry. That means that in addition to dealing with the classic, well-known cases from corporate governance, we are developing a new style of teaching where we get to work in ‘real time’ with participants’ practical cases. This fits nicely with the dynamics that we advocate at the Nyenrode Corporate Governance Institute: we put current events into an academic 24 context and perspectives as we have done for many years. This is how we keep the NBP curriculum contemporary.” Jan Maarten Slagter, himself an NBP alumnus, adds: “The idea is that actual case history content can almost always link back to the well-known themes of the corporate governance field. When I was undertaking the NBP myself, in my year we already conducted discussions about our own practical issues during dinner, or at the bar in the evenings where we exchanged advice. We are now going to incorporate this more formally in the program.” Daniëlle Melis: “We are going to let participants reflect, under the supervision of faculty and program management. We will let them get into their cars to go home ‘confused at a higher level’ , with the thought that as a manager they need to work out a solution for themselves. With the legacy present in the NBP we offer a platform to new managers to develop themselves and find their own way. We fill the rucksack. Nyenrode year overview 2014 25 NYENRODE CORPOR ATE GOVERNANCE INSTITUTE It is Nyenrode’s ambition to occupy a leading and prominent position where the theme corporate governance is concerned. Historically, corporate governance is inextricably linked to Nyenrode. With its strong foundation in the business community in the Netherlands and the excellent education that Nyenrode offers with the LES Trinity Leadership, Entrepreneurship & Stewardship, Nyenrode is inextricably linked to the top of the Dutch business community and is thus the natural ‘owner’ of the theme corporate governance in the Netherlands. The Nyenrode Corporate Governance Institute (NCGI) aims to offer the leading multi-disciplinary platform for education, independent research and opinion forming to promote ‘good governance’ in the Netherlands. Since its establishment in 2005, various centers are involved in the NCGI such as the Center for Corporate Governance & Law, Center for Entrepreneurship & Stewardship, Center for Auditing & Assurance, Center for Information and Management Accounting Control Systems, Center for Financial Accounting & Reporting, as well as the program directors of the New Board Program, the Commissarissencyclus (Supervisory Board Cycle), Inzicht in Corporate Governance (Insight into Corporate Governance) and the accountancy programs. 26 The NCGI currently consists of thirty Nyenrode faculty members and/or program directors, who are all active in the field of corporate governance. The NCGI has been chaired by Dr. Daniëlle Melis MBA since 2013. The members meet monthly. Research Monitoring Committee Corporate Governance Code Nyenrode Business Universiteit has used a new research method that produces more data regarding compliance to the Dutch Corporate Governance Code by companies quoted on the stock exchange. In part based on this Nyenrode research, the Monitoring Commission Corporate Governance Code has drawn up its report on compliance to the Code. The 2014 research report relates to the 2013 financial year and was presented on January 29, 2015. Publication of fourth edition of the Yearbook Corporate Governance The Yearbook Corporate Governance 20142015 was published in November 2014. Wideranging aspects of corporate governance were again discussed by prominent authors from various disciplines in this fourth edition of the Yearbook. NCGI member, Prof. Dr. Barbara Bier LLM, is one of the leading editors of the Yearbook Corporate Governance. ICGN Academic Meeting In 2014, the NCGI proudly hosted the first Academic Meeting of the International Corporate Governance Network (ICGN). The mission of this investor-led organization of governance professionals is to inspire and promote effective standards of corporate governance in order to advance efficient markets and economies world-wide. Some 60 corporate governance practitioners and academics from all over the world, including Harvard, Kellogg and the London Business School, attended the ICGN Academic Meeting. Seminar supervisory board and online startups Accountancy students from Nyenrode carried out exploratory research into this. The provisional results of the research were discussed during a Rockstart & Nyenrode afternoon seminar on October 30, 2014. Amongst the speakers were professors Barbara Bier (about ‘Supervision on legal entities: desirability and reality’) and Lineke Sneller (about ‘What requirements need to appoint a member of the Supervisory Board’). Executive Session 2014 of the New Board Program NCGI member Marjan Lubbers MSOD, program director of the Nyenrode New Board Program, was the proud host of the 2014 Executive Session “The Governance of Business Information & Security”. Cyber security is a strategic issue and belongs on the boardroom agenda, just like information technology and innovation. This is one of the conclusions of the 2014 Executive Session. The session was day-chaired by NCGI member Prof. Dr. Bob Hoogenboom. NCGI monthly newsletter The NCGI published 10 monthly newsletters in 2014. This newsletter has a subscriber base of more than 2000 subscribers, and is valued in the market for its monthly overview of Nyenrode’s contribution to the further development of corporate governance in The Netherlands through education, research and opinion leadership. Nyenrode New Business School, located in Amsterdam, executes Nyenrode’s Bachelor in Business Administration program, a 4-year program that includes several study weeks on the Nyenrode campus in Breukelen as well as international study trips to countries such as India and China. During their last study 28 year many students attend elective modules at Westminster University in London before starting with their final research project. Nyenrode’s vision on education, summarized in Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Stewardship, is shared and promoted widely within the BBA. The core values of Nyenrode New Business School - Entrepreneurship, Creativity and Responsible Business - are well aligned with those of Nyenrode. A major event during the year 2013-2014 was the relocation to the new premises on March 6, 2014, right in the middle of the historic center of Amsterdam, along the Keizersgracht. Bachelor’s students can now work in the fully-renovated premises, ‘De 5 Keizers’, in a spacious learning and working environment. The building’s inner courtyard also features an incubator, where students can launch their own companies. The actual opening ceremony was done by Reinout Oerlemans, CEO and founder of the Eyeworks Group, who is a true example of a young and successful international entrepreneur in the eyes of many students. He was accompanied by opera singers and a choir of students who performed a mini opera. That is why regulators and legislators want public auditors to take more of a forensic approach. Thinking in terms of Generation X or Y does no justice to the complexity of human behavior in organizations. This was suggested by Prof. Dr. Robert Blomme in his inaugural lecture entitled ‘Patterns of variety: individual behaviors and habits in the organizational context’. Blomme delivered the lecture at Nyenrode Business Universiteit on December 18, 2014, in his acceptance of the position of Organizational Behavior lecturer. WWW.NYENRODE.NL/BLOMME VALEDICTORY LECTURES André Wierdsma, professor of Organization and Co-creation, gave his valedictory lecture to a packed Pfizer room at Nyenrode on June 26, 2014. The lecture was entitled: ‘Choosing your position honestly: moral leadership in fluid organizations’ [‘Vrijmoedig positie kiezen: moreel leiderschap in vloeibare organisaties’]. André Wierdsma studied at Nyenrode from 1968 to 1970. He obtained his doctorate in Tilburg in 1999. Not long afterwards, he was invited to take up a professorship at Nyenrode. From the very beginning, Wierdsma was involved in executive education and organizational development at Nyenrode. In addition, he was the program director of the Nyenrode Executive MBA program (NEMBA) and the Advanced Management Program (AMP). In Nyenrode’s view, it points at the importance of supplementing to intellectual education with shaping leaders and professionals. Nyenrode distinguishes itself by the unique experience and the personal approach it offers to students and executives. It is a safe place where respect for different backgrounds and opinions is cherished. The value students experience from being on campus in Breukelen, or at the Nyenrode New Business School in Amsterdam, as well as the strong emphasis on shaping according the LES-trinity, creates a unique experience not only to the programs, but also to the extra-curricular activities that can be performed at Nyenrode. The network of Nyenrode alumni has a vital role to play in this strategic objective. Nyenrode, due to its emphasis on shaping, has helped many professionals to rise to some of the highest offices in the Dutch business community. After completing a code of conduct for students, a code of conduct for employees is being compiled in which the behavior fitting the Nyenrode experience is further being formalized. Part of broadening the Nyenrode experience is to put more focus on the involvement of Accountancy and Controlling students and alumni. Intensifying the Nyenrode experience is reached through offering a large variety of extra-curricular activities from outside parties, to be held on campus e.g. sports. Quality is being measured continuously by conducting a yearly survey on how students experience being part of Nyenrode. More effort is being put in involving Nyenrode alumni even more in the activities of Nyenrode Business Universiteit. This will be executed in close cooperation with the Nyenrode Alumni VCV and – amongst other means and activities - with the use of smart technological solutions. Alumni engaging with current students is one of the best and rewarding Nyenrode experience for both parties and thus will be encouraged through different kinds of activities. Added value for exchange students is another focus point to further improve the Nyenrode experience for the upcoming year. The efforts of attracting more start up companies and entrepreneurs will be one of the activities for 60 Acres, where local start-up companies with no Nyenrode ties are welcome to the business accelerator on campus. Nyenrode year overview 2014 37 BUSINESS ACCELER ATOR 60 ACRES More and more people wish to set up their own business. And there is a good reason for that. As what is more rewarding than being your own boss and delivering a product or a service that you really believe in? In this process, it is often underestimated that you have a lot to deal with as an ambitious starting entrepreneur. It not only requires a considerable amount of courage to start your own business, you also have to take care of all sorts of practical matters. And at the same time, you hardly have any income. You would prefer to focus your attention on your customers, but other things also have to be dealt with. Wouldn’t it be great if you could have easy and low cost access to a group of experts who can support you with this? With this idea in mind, Nyenrode succeeded in converting its business accelerator into a new concept that is in keeping with today’s entrepreneurial spirit: 60 Acres. 60 Acres offers starting entrepreneurs a wide range of support services, including support services provided by the university’s alumni. This support is aimed mainly at unburdening entrepreneurs as much as possible during the start-up phase of their companies. A good example of a young company in 60 Acres is Bloomy Floral Creations, an online webshop where consumers can compose their own bouquet and have it delivered at home. Entrepreneur Eric Egberts completed the Modular Executive MBA in Food & Finance at Nyenrode and, as an entrepreneur, he now has the dream that Bloomy will expand into a franchise organization with a store concept in which lifestyle and flowers are combined. Alumnus Bart van Asten is the new head of 60 Acres. He is responsible for the daily management and development of the business center located in the Coach House Wing of the estate. 38 Another company in 60 Acres is PlanMen. PlanMen has already been active since 2008 and helps organizations to plan staffing and activities better. In order to operate effectively, PlanMen has developed its own successful approach together with Nyenrode Business Universiteit, which focuses on processes and staffing as well as systems. Jan Aalberts Opens Expansion of 60 Acres At the end of June 2014, the expansion of business accelerator 60 Acres in the Coach House Wing was opened by top entrepreneur Jan Aalberts, founder of multinational Aalberts Industries and holder of an honorary doctorate from Nyenrode. The expansion of 60 Acres has created space for around 100 entrepreneurs who are just starting out. In addition to the office facilities present, they can make use of the knowledge and expertise of the Nyenrode faculty and the alumni network. Various advisory services are also included, including financial advice from joint venture partner Rabobank. At the opening of the expansion of 60 Acres, Jan Aalberts said: “It is fantastic to be able to get support, advice and office space at 60 Acres on the campus after graduating from Nyenrode. As an entrepreneur just starting out you are always in a battle, striving to make a success of it eventually. Starting out as an entrepreneur is fantastic, as I know from experience. But you do need put in a lot of time and energy, and make sacrifices. I wish the entrepreneurs at 60 Acres every success, and advise them to set the bar high and go for it with their full endeavors.” Three Entrepreneurs Introduce Themselves The variation within the entrepreneurs at 60 Acres is shown clearly by a number of businesses which joined up recently. Manager Bart van Asten: “It is not just recent graduates who want to start a business here. We are also seeing a stream of people who have spent several years in a management position, accumulated expertise there and then have decided to start for themselves.” One example of such an entrepreneur with a great deal of experience is Gerard van der Kroon, who studied at Nyenrode during the NOIB era. He already has 41 years of experience in consultancy. With his company TheUrge, he sets up wind energy campaigns for wind turbine construction companies and investors in wind energy, which focus on increasing public acceptance of wind energy. Van der Kroon: “TheUrge chose to locate at 60 Acres due to the stimulating environment offered by Nyenrode thanks to the direct presence of Nyenrodians, the fellow entrepreneurs, the faculty, the library, the castle and the campus.” Chris Ockers started as an entrepreneur almost immediately after graduation. His company, 123OPSLAAN.nl, combines self-storage with cloud storage. “We bring plastic boxes to people’s homes. These can be filled and are then collected and stored by 123OPSLAAN.nl. Everything is arranged through the website. Ockers: “As there are a lot of entrepreneurs in 60 Acres who are just starting out, you can learn from one another. Some businesses are one step further along, but were recently in the phase that I am currently in.” Nyenrode year overview 2014 39 Stijn Sarneel won the Nyenrode Best in Business Award 2014. He wrote the thesis for his Executive MBA on conduct and culture in Supervisory Boards. Now he has started a company in the area of supervision: Balansparant. This is an independent advisory company which is specialized in improving internal supervision in organizations. Stijn Sarneel of Balansparant chose 60 Acres in order to have a connection with professors, and thereby remain up-to-date on academic knowledge in the field of Governance, Risk & Compliance. This number may vary per year, for example, in response to current trends and hot topics amongst alumni themselves. We also update records on all our alumni, members and non-members, on a daily basis. Nyenrode has alumni in the Netherlands, but we also have many internationals, as well as alumni who move abroad after their studies. For that reason, all our communication is bilingual, that is, in Dutch and in English. This applies to our magazine, our website and the newsletter. During the 2014 Refreshment Day, we also had interpreters on hand for simultaneous translation. In this manner, events such as this are also accessible for international visitors.” Nyenrode year overview 2014 41 42 New name and format for Nyenrode Alumni VCV magazine: Van Verre The alumni association has been publishing a members’ magazine since 1958. The first issue of 2014 marks the start of a new “magazine era”. Annemiek Wortel, editor-in-chief of the alumni magazine explains: “From now on, our magazine will go by the name of Van Verre [literally: ‘from afar’]. A bold magazine with a title to match. We think it’s a name that evokes the positive aspects of studying at Nyenrode. Van Verre, in addition to being the toast in the bar at Nyenrode, is also the universal greeting given by Nyenrode students and alumni, in whatever corner of the world they may be”. The change in name and the restyling of the magazine are not unrelated to the new communications mix in which the magazine, newsletter, website and social media pages all play a vital new role. The content of the magazine (more in-depth and contemplative) and the use of imagery (a more modern “look and feel”) have also been modified. However, the essence of the magazine remains unchanged. The magazine is still being written for Nyenrodians by Nyenrodians. Members of the association receive Van Verre 4 times a year. Refreshment Day 2014 Every year, Nyenrode Alumni VCV organizes Refreshment Day. In 2014, this afternoon event was attended by 300 alumni and students. This year’s Refreshment Day was organized in conjunction with students of Ondernemend Nyenrode and De Zilveren Rijder, and included speakers such as Neelie Kroes, Tex Gunning and Rob Riemen. Three Investing Events Three times a year, the alumni association organizes a number of Investing Events for alumni of the university. The purpose of these is to bring together investors and business leaders so that they can share their know-how and experience. Thanks to events like these, more and more alumni are finding investors for their projects. In 2014 one of the events was specifically devoted to the topic of succession in family-run businesses. Career Events In helping more alumni to find new career opportunities in what is a troublesome employment market, the association, together with the Career & Personal Development department at Nyenrode, has offered its support by organizing various meetings. During the 2014 Career Event the focus was on personal branding, methods of communication and presentation. Nyenrode year overview 2014 43 Volunteer thank-you day Without its 250-plus volunteers, the Nyenrode Alumni VCV would be nothing! This year, during a visit to the Royal Palace on the Dam and a dinner at the Industriële Groote Club in Amsterdam, they were given pride of place and shown a big round of thanks by the association. Christmas get-together At the end of each calendar year, the Nyenrode Alumni VCV organizes a social gettogether for members and contacts in the alumni association. The 2013 Christmas get-together attracted more than 250 people. As a token of thanks for the partnership in the previous year, many members of staff at Nyenrode were also invited. Motor-bike & Cabrio Day and Golf Day 2014 With no fewer than 80 motor-bikes and open-top cars, the Motor-bike & Cabrio Day proved an overwhelming success. The start and finish this year were in Werkendam (Fort Altena) and during the event the sun was a welcome guest. The Golf Day this year was held on one of the nine oldest courses in the Netherlands at the Eindhoven Golf Club. 44 AMERIC AN FRIENDS OF NYENRODE UNIVERSIT Y The exchange of Nyenrode students with the USA started nearly 50 years ago. In 2012, alumni in the United States founded American Friends of Nyenrode University Inc (AFNU). AFNU was created to support two broad objectives. First, it offers those who studied at Nyenrode in the past the opportunity to financially support current and future students. Second, it serves as a conduit to the university to enhance the educational experience at Nyenrode, foster relations with corporations and US business schools, and further strengthen the Nyenrode network in the US. AFNU’s US-based Nyenrodians and US companies have sponsored students for internships, opened doors for thesis projects, interviewed American applicants, and even assisted Nyenrode graduates enrolling at US business schools. Indeed, few European business schools can rival Nyenrode’s American network, boasting an estimated 700+ members. In June 2012, the US Internal Revenue Service granted AFNU 501(c)(3) designation, which makes donations to AFNU deductible for US taxpayers. So far AFNU has financed ten scholarships for students of the MSc in Management and International MBA programs and has plans to raise even more funds and broaden its base in the near future. Nyenrode ambassador and AFNU board member Albert van Servellen explains, “I’ve been with AFNU for eighteen months now. The funds that we raise with AFNU may be used only for education, not for repairing roofs of university buildings and similar purposes. The money must actually be spent on scholarships. This amount may rise during the academic year if further alumni groups offer to sponsor a scholarship in the months ahead. Nyenrode Fund (or Stichting Nyenrode Fonds in Dutch) helps alumni to sponsor students who otherwise would not have the financial means to study at Nyenrode, and it also raises funds for investments in the university and the estate. The Nyenrode Fund is run by alumni and originates from the Dr. E.B.J. Postma Chair of Entrepreneurship, named after the celebrated Nyenrode rector from 1950 to 1980. Revolving scholarships Thanks to donors Following a decline in company-sponsored scholarships, the revolving scholarship project was launched in 2010. Revolving scholarships are financed by alumni (classes, debating societies, year clubs, VCV Circles and individual alumni), where the recipient is expected to repay the scholarship in the future. The number of scholarships sponsored by (groups of) alumni grew from two in 2010, to fifty in 2014. In June 2014, Nyenrode Fund thanked all its donors during the yearly so-called ‘Dank De Donor Dag’ (Thank Donors Day). At the same time, the alumni scholarships of the past year were formally awarded by these alumni and the new alumni scholarship agreements were signed. Former scholarship winners were also invited to describe their study and career progress. One of the reasons why maintaining ties with these alumni is important, is that they can also make new scholarships possible with their future donations. This year the theme of the ‘Dank De Donor Dag’ was establishing a culture of giving, but also of giving back. Their bonds were given expression by inviting former winners of revolving scholarships and their former sponsors. This is expected to lead to former winners becoming the donors of the future. In the coming years this will be a main focus of Nyenrode Fund. Alumni selection committees Each year, on the day the new academic year is opened, alumni selection committees come to Nyenrode to choose their ‘own’ winner from among all Nyenrode’s scholarship winners. These alumni selection committees represent alumni who have funded scholarships in that year. Nyenrode year overview 2014 47 Johan Schaap former Full-Time MSc in Management 20 student, on his scholarship: “The scholarship I received was vital for me to be able to start at Nyenrode. It was exactly the share for which I had not yet managed to find funding. I’m extremely enthusiastic about the scholarship’s revolving character. This creates a stronger bond within the Nyenrode community. I’m currently paying an amount back to view with the Nyenrode Fund each year. With a donation like this I have layar much more to gain than to lose.” PRE VIE W 2015 TAKE A SEAT To make the renovation of three lecture halls in the De Rooij building possible, Nyenrode Fund seeks sponsors for the so-called ‘Claim Your Chair’ project. Sponsors donate € 500 and in return get a name plate on one of the chairs in the lecture rooms. An online campaign is launched on social media, to support the ‘Claim Your Chair’ project. In this ‘Take A Seat’ campaign the sponsor is given the opportunity to select a chair online, and he can then pay immediately. This gives him an influence over who he will sit next to. It is also shown who has already sponsored chairs, along with which academic years are leading. PRE VIE W 2015 E-WALL Nyenrode’s Corporate Marketing & Communications department is assisting Nyenrode Fund with fund-raising. They helped Nyenrode Fund in creating a so-called ‘E-Wall’, an attractive-looking, easy-to-adapt website. The E-Wall consists of many videos emphasizing the importance of donations by alumni and showcasing the achievements and future goals of Nyenrode Fund. 48 STR ATEGY 2020 To create new services as a value proposition In order to solve their problems, clients generally want support, regardless of whether this involves training, advice, analysis, business research, or design and implementation of solutions. Often, the same competences are required for both consulting- and learning-related activities, yet the market continues to divide them into separate activities, carried out by different organizations. Very few organizations recognize the opportunity of blending learning and consultancy activities in addressing clients’ core issues, instead of curing symptoms with isolated services. Our aim is to respond to this trend by leveraging our extensive competences in both academia and practice. Given the high percentage of faculty staff either still employed part-time by organizations or having had that experience, we are in an ideal position to serve the Dutch business community with more than education alone. We have tackled the issue head on, not least because we see great opportunities for Nyenrode. The Nyenrode Corporate Governance Institute is a good example, whereby we helped several clients to address governance issues in their organizations. Within Tax & Finance the first Master in Fiscal NVAO was accredited in September. Partly as a result of the introduction of ‘Horizontal Monitoring’ by the Dutch tax authorities, this Master is highly relevant and topical. In fact, from the very start, two groups have been set up to this end. Within Open Programs of Executive Education, a project has been initiated with STZ hospitals, for which an HRM program has been developed and discussed. It is a new program in a new market. We are progressively rapidly developing new programs and services and we will be organizing more events for different groups in the market. From past experience, we know that such events are always well appreciated. Participants are able to network and make their acquaintance with Nyenrode, both with respect to program content and the learning environment. Without doubt, this will lead to many new partnerships for Nyenrode. Nyenrode year overview 2014 49 50 ESTATE TOP ESTATE AND UNIVERSITY BUILDING According to www.topmanagementdegrees.com, Nyenrode Business Universiteit is no.5 on the list of the 50 most beautiful business schools in the world. “With all that to explore, we’re not sure we’d ever get down to opening our books, but it does seem a lovely place in which to study”, the website says. Furthermore, according to Times Higher Education Twitter followers, Nyenrode Business Universiteit has one of the 10 of the best university buildings in the world. Nyenrode year overview 2014 51 Lecture halls De Rooij Lecture hall 102 has now been completed. This follows the renovation of lecture hall 104 in the De Rooij building last year. As in hall 104, hall 102 also has a panorama photo of the estate covering the entire wall; in this case the photo is of the rose garden. The old fixtures and fittings needed to be replaced after 20 years of intensive use. The whole hall was renovated whereby not only new (sponsored) chairs were installed but also new carpeting, energysaving lighting and completely new presentation equipment. The area has now been made very suitable for webcasts. Charging points have been installed for students to charge their laptops, tablets and mobile phones. Also as with hall 102, chairs can be sponsored for € 500,00 per piece. Nyenrode Fund (Stichting Nyenrode Fonds) is organizing this Claim Your Chair sponsoring project. Outdoor cubicles Since the summer of 2014 participants of the executive programmes in the Dr. Albert Heijn building, when working in groups, have been able to make use of outdoor cubicles that had been built alongside the patio; Dutch weather allowing of course. 52 The 3 Fontyne New events location The white house at the exit of the estate, formerly known as the house for the rector and dating from the fifties, was named after this gable stone by former rector Jacques Postma. As of October 1st, 2013, this building has been taken into use as a location for events. The living room and the garden are ideal to enjoy an informal and separate gathering with participants, guests or colleagues. The 3 Fontyne can be used for every type of event, but is especially suitable for team building sessions, private dinners and workshops. The lovely view over the garden and the fields contributes to a relaxed atmosphere. Gable stone In May 2014, a gable stone from Nyenrode was returned to its original place in Amsterdam, on Lijnbaansgracht 189. This gable stone, D’3 Fontyne, belonged to a patisserie that was built there in the second quarter of the 18th century and then demolished in 1933. After the demolition the gable stone found its way to Nyenrode during the Goudstikker period. In 2011, former Nyenrode president Piero Overmars, gave permission for the stone to return to Amsterdam, after a request from the Vrienden van Amsterdamse Gevelstenen (Friends of Amsterdam Gable Stones, VVAG), an association that was approached by Nyenrode heritage advisor Gert Immerzeel. Nyenrode year overview 2014 53 Open for visitors Although we try to maintain an optimal undisturbed learning environment for our guests and students, we sometimes open the estate for interested visitors who wish to come and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. We have several opportunities for visiting the estate. For instance, the Nyenrode estate is open to the public during Open Monument Day and for Labyrinth in former glory The labyrinth on the estate can now be marveled at once more. Some 3500 new Japanese holly plants (IIex crenata “Dark Green”) have been planted, returning the labyrinth to its former glory. Over four years ago the old buxus hedges were diseased and a number of walking tours. These walking tours are organized by the IVN (the Dutch Institute for Nature Education and Sustainability) and a local church community. At the end of 2014, we started a new collaboration with the regional Vechtstreekmuseum and Art Fund Nyenrode for organizing guided tours to art exhibitions on the estate. dying. After consulting fellow gardeners and other parties, the radical decision was taken to clear the labyrinth and plant all over again. It was decided to implement a soil improvement process by applying humus and compost, which helped to improve the acidity and nutrient content of the soil. A drainage system was also laid. The former tennis house next to the labyrinth had already been renovated the previous spring. The stained glass windows were restored, as well as the wood, and the roof was given a new surface. The painting work has now also brought the house almost back to its original colors, such as ox blood red. Above all, blended learning requires a new balance between students and teaching staff. The Nyenrode campus is a key differentiator for our ‘same time, same place’ interaction with program participants and involves a variety of on-campus activities, supported by technology-enhanced learning, for example, in the form of ‘live’ polling during lectures. At Nyenrode we feel that development of our blended learning concept is an ongoing process, where the key factor for implementing and enhancing the concept is faculty training. The Nyenrode educational philosophy is based on the three- pillar concept: Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Stewardship. This philosophy entails ‘LESs teaching, more learning and development. The LES values are further being developed by Christo Nel, program director of the International MBA. Currently, tests are being carried out with various innovative online learning applications and standards and processes have been developed which are related to blended learning. These tests have surpassed the expectations of Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs. Also, faculty and staff are kept informed about, as well as trained in, the latest blended learning developments. The available knowledge can be shared with all aspiring professionals from any background who have an appetite for business knowledge. There are around 100 books available at any one time, with new books coming on-stream all the time. The next big thing will be to appoint a professor of educational innovation who will be responsible for integrating continuous education innovations. This will be a challenge, since academic professors with this specific profile are hard to find. Invariably, classes will be increasingly engaged in some form of teaching innovation. Christo Nel will continue with the implementation of the LES philosophy. Nyenrode will consider teaching innovation proficiency when hiring new faculty staff. Implementing team-based learning in the full-time MSc will be a priority. The basic IT infrastructure, such as the enhanced Wi-Fi network across the entire campus, will be in place at the end of 2014. The gatherings are intended for students, alumni, staff, and anyone else who is interested, and are held at one of a number of locations at Nyenrode: the Zolder Bar, the Plesman Bar and the 60 Acres Bar. VERMAAT NEW CATERER Since January 1st, 2014, Nyenrode has a new caterer, Vermaat. This caterer was preferred above other parties in a tender based on its price-quality ratio, the support that the caterer can provide to Nyenrode and the possibilities for conceptual modernization of the catering. For participants of our programs there is now a better choice varying from budget to deluxe. The prices have been reduced for the most purchased and popular articles from the assortment. Separate contracts have been concluded with Vineyard and Martinair Party Service for party catering and external events. Nyenrode year overview 2014 57 SERVICE POINT Nyenrode set up a Service Point since the spring of 2014 in cooperation with Canon where printing and copying orders can be accepted and carried out. Large printing orders are now carried out by Canon in Amsterdam. Only small incidental printing orders are still carried out at the Service Point in the De Rooij building. The location of the old printing and copying station has now become part of the business accelerator 60 Acres. comfort and, of course, also the professional image and the recognizability of our personnel for students and guests. Nyenrode has opted for a modern dark blue color with traditional yellow highlights and, of course, the Nyenrode arms. GREEN COMPANY CARS The old company uniforms were recycled by Suit Up! GOLDEN COMPASS In February 2014, Nyenrode Business Universiteit put a new company car into operation as Nyenrode’s former company vehicle needed to be replaced. The vehicle is used daily for transportation on the estate and for trips in the Breukelen area (to the post and the station). As a result, all company cars on the estate, except for a few gardening vehicles, are now environmentally friendly. As from early 2014, the new caterer Vermaat also started using green vehicles. NEW COMPANY UNIFORMS The General Services, Service Desk, Events & Sales and Service Point staff and the Janitor have been wearing new company uniforms since the opening of the academic year 2013-2014. These new company uniforms have been developed in cooperation with the company Suit Up! In the development process, a lot of attention was paid to quality and 58 With their vessel the Gulden Leeuw, this year Team Nyenrode won the golden compass in the Race of the Classics 2014, as the first to reach the English coast. This student competition with classic ships lasts a week and takes the teams from the Netherlands and Britain back and forth in stages. The team ultimately finished third in the final classification. NYENRODE RALLY The Nyenrode Rally sets off from view Nyenrode castle every year, with attracting sports-loving Nyenrodians layar with a passion for cars. Over three days the participating teams tour a variety of locations where they dine and spend the night. During the rally the participants are presented with several tasks. Alongside navigation and tactical insight, the driver’s navigation skills and the attentiveness of his or her passenger are put to the test to be eligible for prizes and victory. The rally was held for the fifteenth time in September 2014. PLESMAN PAVILION PAINTING Since summer 2014, a painting is hanging in the Plesman Pavilion at Nyenrode on which this building is depicted under construction with the castle in the background. The painting dates from 1954 and was painted by the artist Klaas Ooyevaar (1911-1990), a pupil of famous painters such as Corneille and Oskar Kokoschka. OWN LANE A new lane has been unveiled at the Nyenrode campus, the Leo Besemer Laan. Leo Besemer is the campus warden at Nyenrode and has been associated with the institute for more than 30 years now. This tribute to Leo Besemer has been made by the students of the 21st full-time MSc in Management class. FOUNDING FATHER ROETERINK In February 2014, Mr Maarten Roeterink, grandson of Frans-Marius Roeterink (18941979) who was one of the Founding Fathers of Nyenrode, donated some special and personal possessions of his grandfather to Nyenrode to preserve them for posterity. The objects were an engraving picturing Nijenrode Castle and a certificate awarded by the XIth “Collegie der Heeren V” (board of the NCV student association) in which they made Professor F.M. Roeterink an honorary member of the NCV. REGATTA On Saturday, May 10, 2014, the longest rowing regatta in the Netherlands, from Amsterdam to Breukelen was held for the third time: the Nyenrode New Business Regatta. The regatta was organized by students of the Nyenrode New Business School, in partnership with rowing club ’t Juiste Tuig. The regatta served as a fundraiser, raising money for the IMC Weekend School. This school offers children in underprivileged neighborhoods supplementary weekend education to help improve their prospects. The tradition of the New Business Regatta began three years ago, when the Nyenrode New Business School was acquired by Nyenrode Business Universiteit. The route is symbolic of the link between the two schools. Following the historic trade route between Amsterdam and Breukelen, it leads along the river Vecht, which until late in the nineteenth century one of the principal arterial routes in the Netherlands. This year some 250 students, staff, and alumni of Nyenrode and employees of various companies enthusiastically took part in the regatta. Nyenrode year overview 2014 59 ART AT NYENRODE ART COMMITTEE The art committee contributes to the estate experience by giving art a place in the outside area and by organizing exhibitions in the Neelie Kroes hall. The art committee currently consists of Ronald Emons, (Chairman), Priscilla Kloostra (Vice-Chairperson/Treasurer), Kathelijn Simonis (Secretary), Jo Vincken, Els Sonneveld, Pieter-Jan Benes, Michiel Brandt en Jan-Willem Jagtenberg. A collection of photos by Herman van Doorn of Nyenrode Castle together with three other castles of the “Stichtse Vecht” (both the interior and the exterior) •Photos of funghi paradise Nyenrode by heritage advisor Gert Immerzeel ART FUND NYENRODE The Dies Natalis 2014 saw the first in a series of exhibitions organized by the newly formed Art Fund Nyenrode that intends to bring together different kinds of art, the Nyenrode community and the university. The exhibition consists of photos by South African photographer Pieter Hugo from the collection of alumnus Herman Vaanholt. Pieter Hugo’s work can be found in major museums and collections world wide. Through a collaboration with the Vechtstreekmuseum, visitors from the regional community could come and visit the exhibition. 60 C AREER & PERSONAL DE VELOPMENT Willem van Donge Willem van Donge was appointed the new head of the Career & Personal Development Department on January 1st, 2014. With a strong corporate background and a track record in recruitment Willem van Donge is primarily responsible for maintaining solid relationships with the business community and use these connections to increase the opportunities for Nyenrode students. The Nyenrode Career Event 2014 gathered renowned companies at the Nyenrode estate to bring Nyenrode students closer to the b usiness community. This year, companies such as FrieslandCampina, ABN AMRO, Philips, Shell and many more, were involved in interviews, presentations, workshops and the Career Fair. Participants of different Nyenrode degree programs were invited to attend this event to expand their career perspectives by connecting with corporate recruiters and familiarizing themselves with companies from different sectors. In the Meet the CEO sessions, International MBA students meet and interact with c-level executives from a broad spectrum of companies. These sessions have a firm footing in the IMBA program and are organized by Désirée van Gorp. In spring 2014, Nyenrode hosted a second series of industry focus sessions bringing alumni from a range of sectors and industries (IT, consumer goods, consultancy) together with current students. In order to achieve a distinctive position as the go-to place for finding solutions to real-life problems, research and education, Nyenrode needs to single itself out in a restricted number of focus areas. This will enable us to send a clear message to organizations and their members for the kind of issues we can help them with. Criteria for each focus area of expertise include a combination of: coherence of our educational and research output from a market-needs perspective; a multi-disciplinary approach for the purpose of achieving both academic rigor and practical relevance; and papers in distinguished professional and international peer-reviewed journals. The selection of three to five focus areas of expertise - based on market-need, and academic and Nyenrode-specific criteria - will strengthen this position. Nyenrode year overview 2014 63 NYENRODE LE AN INSTITUTE The Lean Management philosophy is a familiar one to many large and medium-sized companies in the Netherlands. Though it has, in some cases, led to success, often the introduction of Lean grinds to a halt. Some organizations fail to properly realize that it is not enough to simply teach people the Lean Management philosophy. To in fact strategically implement “Lean” and realize continuous improvement and customer excellence, Lean Management needs to become an integral part of the DNA of every member of the organization, from the boardroom to the factory floor. Nyenrode put itself on the “Lean” map in 2012, when it set up the Nyenrode Lean Institute, in partnership with ABN AMRO, Achmea and McKinsey & Company. The Nyenrode Lean Institute is made up of two elements. The former copy and printing building now houses the Factory, a model 64 factory for simulating work processes. Since the network was set up in 2012, some 2,500 participants have followed Lean Management training courses here. In addition, two research clusters were launched in 2013: “Lean Transformation with/in IT”, under Han van der Zee, and “Lean in SME Competitiveness”, under Jack van der Veen. “Lean is way of life” Leon Brunenberg became the new director of the Factory of the Nyenrode Lean Institute as of July 1st, 2014. It is his passion to enable organizations to operate more efficiently and effectively by applying the Lean concept. “As the Netherlands we are steadily becoming too expensive,” notes Leon Brunenberg. “That’s why we will need to carry out all the processes we do in this country more efficiently and more intelligently, than for example in Asia or other rapidly-developing economies. Otherwise we will lose the competitive battle. So Netherlands Inc. cannot avoid taking up the cudgels with concepts like Lean.” “Lean is a toolbox of instruments. But if you only regard it as such then it won’t work”, cautions Brunenberg. “That would be a very cold approach. I myself have been ‘touched’ by the Lean way of looking. If you adopt Lean integrally, and you really are continuously on the lookout for all the activities which add nothing for the client (or the patient), and for ensuring that you remove any redundancies from the process, then people will no longer regard it as ‘tooling’, but they will experience it as a way of life.” and book-work. In our factory, alongside the theory you also experience the practice. Seeing and experiencing do something completely different for you than just reading. You see that a certain process is not running well, and you learn how you can improve that process with the methods provided. Then you actually see the impact of the change. As Confucius has already put it: “I hear and forget, I see and remember, I do and understand.” Up to 2014 the Nyenrode Lean Institute has only offered tailor-made programs. From January 2015, the Factory will also be launching an open program for people from all different kinds of organizations. Lean IT partnerships How can IT partners with service organizations benefit from Lean partnering? The book ‘Lean IT Partnering’, published in spring 2014, answers this question through scientific research and practical cases, and describes the first multi-client study on Lean partnering in IT services. It is the first publication from the research branch of the Nyenrode Lean Institute. “Since the start of the Nyenrode Lean Institute our main operations have been with the founding partners. Many Achmea and ABN AMRO staff have since taken part in our Lean programs. But in recent years a huge number of other companies have also started working with the Lean ideas, or want to start working with them. But many organizations are struggling with them. When launching Lean in an organization you often see that things have not been set up properly. For example, Lean is not given the right attention by top management. Other Lean programs in the world – whether they are yellow, green or black belt – often still consist of lots of sheets Nyenrode year overview 2014 65 66 STR ATEGY 2020 Becoming part of a global network of business schools Engaging our students in doing business in a complex and highly interconnected global environment is ingrained in Nyenrode’s DNA. It means that we prepare our students to respond to challenges in the international business environment. In close cooperation with our institutional partners, we are able to offer our students a unique educational experience. We proceeded in our efforts to increase the internationalization of our beloved institute on several levels. On an institutional level, we now have a dedicated project team that is closely involved with our program managers in ensuring that a long-term partnership with our institutional partners is strongly embedded in our degree and other programs. Together with our institutional friends in India, SouthAfrica, China, and the United States, we have developed various global immersion programs that cater to the needs of our students in the BSc, MBA, and MSc programs. In addition, and with the help of our fantastic international recruiters, we have not only attracted more foreign talent to our campus but we have also increased the visibility of Nyenrode as an educational institution in the rest of the world. Lastly, as our interconnected world is becoming increasingly global, we have securely aligned both our core faculty and our students with the international research community. Our aim here is to produce meaningful research, in addition to affording students opportunities to conceive ideas and put them into practice, armed with the latest research knowledge. We shall continue to develop the international activities of our university with our institutional partners in Asia, the United States and South-Africa, and at the same time explore additional opportunities with new selected partners. Particularly high on the agenda is the alignment between Nyenrode, as an institution, and all international stakeholders involved in this process of cooperation, which means that we shall further develop our relationship with our corporate friends and the Nyenrode alumni. The road we need to travel in order to achieve this may be a long one, but we shall undoubtedly get there: after all, “doing business in a complex and highly interconnected global environment is ingrained in our DNA”. This year, Herna Verhagen, CEO of PostNL, was the keynote speaker at the opening. In November 2014, Herna Verhagen was chosen as most powerful woman of the Netherlands by Opzij magazine. Engaged marketer Javier Arias, international marketer at Nyenrode Business Universiteit and MBA alumnus from our university, is included in the Dutch top 10 of most engaged marketers on LinkedIn. 25 Years business program FOM Wednesday, November 5, 2015 saw the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Nyenrode Business Universiteit’s collaboration with the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM). FOM promotes fundamental physics research in the Netherlands. During the Business Orientation Week, Dutch and foreign PhD students completing their doctorates take a closer look at non-academic organizations. The key question here: Once I have my doctorate do I continue working in science or do I work in business? The program for FOM was held in November at Nyenrode for the 44th time. Nyenrode year overview 2014 69 Nyenrode Newsroom In September 2013, Nyenrode launched its own Newsroom and is now publisher of its own news and therefore less dependent on third parties willing to broadcast news about Nyenrode. In a comparison of several social newsrooms which appeared in the April 2014 edition of ‘Communicatie’ magazine, Nyenrode’s Newsroom scored very positively. According to the magazine for communications specialists, the Newsroom emanates the fact that Nyenrode is a university which is “up to date and likes to provide journalists with useful input”. Overall score for the Nyenrode Newsroom according to ‘Communicatie’ magazine: Good. Healthcare Conference Nyenrode acted as a partner in organizing the spring conference of the NVZD (‘Vereniging van bestuurders in de zorg’, the association of medical administrators) and the VHMZ (‘Vereniging van Hoger Management in de gezondheidszorg’, the association of healthcare higher management). This conference was held on June 12 and 13, 2014, at Kasteel de Vanenburg in Putten. The theme of the conference was “Managing in 2020. Lessons from the past; the route to the future”. Several Nyenrode faculty members addressed the conference. Margaret Wheatley Organizational specialist and leading consultant Margaret Wheatley was a guest at Nyenrode in the week of March 24-28, 2014. In a series of meetings for students, staff and alumni, Wheatley discussed leadership in the year 2014. Royal Honor Eric Niehe, co-founder and chairman of Nyenrode’s Europe India Institute, received in The Hague the royal honor of Companion of the Order of Orange-Nassau. Niehe has previously been Dutch ambassador in various countries including Ireland, Hungary and India. He has done a great deal for the Europe India Institute and the ties that Nyenrode has with India in general. Associate Dean of Nyenrode Jo Vincken gave a speech in honor of this royal distinction. Meeting of Minds The Other Network, the multicultural business network which believes in the power of diversity, joined Nyenrode on June 25, 2014 to organize the Meeting of Minds conference. Participants had the opportunity to enjoy direct discussions with established business and political thinkers such as Herna Verhagen (CEO Post NL) and Sybrand Buma (CDA parliamentary party chairman). 70 YOUNG PROFESSIONALS After the successful nomination of the Young Professional of the Year 2014 whereby Nyenrode Business Universiteit participated as a partner, ICA (Inter Company Association) and Nyenrode have decided to intensify their collaboration. In the coming period, this collaboration will also take the form of events that both parties will be organizing together. On April 25, Prof. Arie Buijs of Nyenrode’s Center for Finance was made a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau, in recognition of his services to entrepreneurial education. He received the royal honor in Utrecht. 5th Henk van Luijk Lecture European Institute for Business Ethics (EIBE), MVO Nederland and VNO-NCW. This year’s lecture examined the issue of integrity from both a theoretical, scientific perspective and a practical perspective. Nyenrode lecturer Edgar Karssing, former student of Henk van Luijk, investigated – “standing on the shoulders of Van Luijk” – what in his view the next step in integrity could be. Simone Davina is General Counsel Legal & Compliance and member of the Executive Management Team at Siemens Nederland. She talked about the rigorous process of ‘self cleaning’ that her organization has undergone during the last few years. The Henk van Luijk Lecture was introduced in 2010 in memory of Professor Henk van Luijk, the Nestor of Dutch business ethics. May 22, 2014, saw the fifth edition of the Henk van Luijk Lecture, an initiative of the Nyenrode Nyenrode year overview 2014 71 EXCELLENT VWO PUPILS On June 26, 2014, 15 pupils from the bilingual (pre-university) VWO program at RSG Broklede in Breukelen not only received their final examination diplomas. They first came to Nyenrode on the same day to receive their certificates for the TVWO Master Assignment Project. The pupils were given the choice of working on their profile papers during the final examination year under the supervision of Nyenrode. They had to choose a more academic approach for this, and focus on a subject that was connected with stewardship/ strengthening stewardship. The supervisor at Nyenrode was Rob Wetzels. In September 2014, a new group of pupils has started. High-school students become chocolate entrepreneurs On February 17, 2014, Nyenrode New Business School held the ‘Rich Taste of Entrepreneurship’ at Nyenrode for students of several gymnasium (pre-university classical education) schools in the Netherlands. The theme for the day was entrepreneurship, and the instructions were straightforward: create a business concept for a company whose principal product is fair-trade chocolate. The students first took part in workshops to learn what a business concept is and what elements a concept should include. After being divided 72 into separate groups, the students then enthusiastically set to work developing their business concepts. An important element was the company’s societal relevance. The students were asked to give a 10-minute pitch in which they needed to convince the judges of their concept. The Fruity Chocolate “company”, which created a concept for healthy snacks, was deemed by the judges to have the best plans. The idea was to dip fresh fruit in chocolate and sell this product at schools and in sports clubs cafeterias. World Wonder In 2013, Nyenrode was chosen as one of the Seven World Wonders of the Stichtse Vecht municipality and included in an exhibition in the Vechtstreekmuseum that ended in the summer of 2014. In the jury report for the nomination, Nyenrode was praised for its contribution to the knowledge economy of the municipality and for the university’s attention for sustainability. Bangladesh Trade & Investment Project The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Dhaka has partnered with Nyenrode in order to stimulate economic relations between the Netherlands and Bangladesh. The main aim for Nyenrode is to broker Dutch and Bangladeshi commercial interests and to support responsible business. After all, greater trade and value chain development have a positive effect on economic efficiency and thus social development. As Ambassador to the Netherlands in Bangladesh Gerben de Jong underlines: “This fits seamlessly with the Nyenrode motto ‘for business, by business’. If you want to strengthen the private sector in a country like Bangladesh, then consult the private sector itself on how”. The project at Nyenrode is conducted by Désirée van Gorp and her team. The years 2013-2014 were eventful years for the Bangladesh Trade & Investment project with focus on agri-business, water, logistics and ICT sectors. The project started with the launch of the Netherlands Bangladesh Business Platform (www.nbbp.org), which provides access to economic information and is an important instrument to boost trade. Four sector studies on agri-business, water, logistics, and ICT were published and presented during sector meetings at Nyenrode, which were aimed at informing the Dutch business community on the economic, political and social developments in Bangladesh. In the last two years Nyenrode in cooperation with the Embassy organized three trade missions to Dhaka and two trade missions to the Netherlands to explore business opportunities in the focus industries. Since the start of the partnership in 2012, ten Dutch companies have set up businesses or invested in Bangladesh with direct support or advice from Nyenrode and the Netherlands Embassy. Nyenrode year overview 2014 73 IMC Weekend School at Nyenrode IMC Weekend School organized its nationwide alumni and partner day on September 8, 2014, together with Nyenrode. Over 300 participants met each other in Breukelen during a varied program with the theme: Horizon. IMC Weekend School provides supplementary education for motivated young people from ages ten to fourteen from socio-economic disadvantaged neighborhoods. The students were able to attend a number of different workshops, such as astronomy by Professor Vincent Icke, Law by Prem Radhakishun and lawyer Jan Pas and also Music, Acting, and Job Application training. Nyenrode organized the Boxing, Rugby, Personal Branding and Entrepreneurship workshops. Heleen van Hall, Campus Dean, welcomed everyone and Willem van Donge, Head of Career & Personal Development, participated in the discussion panel. Nyenrode Europe India Institute The Nyenrode Europe India Institute was launched in 2008. The Nyenrode Europe India Institute, through its three pillars – Education, Research, and Public Opinion Leadership – and committed support from leading Indian and Dutch organizations, aims to connect Nyenrode with India by embedding India related activities in relevant educational programs of the university. In order to foster ties with India, the Nyenrode Europe India Institute has formed partnership with institutes and organizations of repute in India and Europe. Nyenrode has partnerships with Indian Institute of Management in Lucknow, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade in New Delhi, S. P. Jain Institute of Management & Research in Mumbai and Tata Consultancy Services. The collaborations include cooperation on program 74 level with regard to content, recruitment of students and student exchanges. It has now become the thirdbest-selling strategy book in the world, used in more than 300 universities in 60 countries. What is new is that in contrast to traditional business literature centered mainly around Western knowledge, Bob de Wit shows how Eastern strategy concepts can also make a significant contribution to strategic thinking and decision-making. In his book De Wit demonstrates that in order to understand companies and to trade successfully, one needs to transcend one’s own Western or Eastern perspective. Only then can you see your own strengths and weaknesses and achieve synthesis: the fabled “best of both worlds”. NYENRODE EUROPE CHINA INSTITUTE The Nyenrode Europe China Institute operates in the field of EU-China economic and business relations. The focus is on applied business research and on sharing this knowledge with business executives and policy makers. Activities of the Nyenrode Europe China Institute in the academic year 2013-2014 include four editions of the China Structural Development Monitor in collaboration with pension and insurance administrator MN, facilitating student trips to China as well as company visits by Chinese organizations to Nyenrode. In 2014, Chairman Haico Ebbers was invited to become a visiting professor at Renmin Business School in Beijing. Nyenrode year overview 2014 75 NUFFIC NICHE 199 project in Bangladesh A number of serious accidents in the past year in the ready made garment sector have instigated an unprecedented increase in the sense of urgency in the debate, primarily concerning labor conditions. Real and significant improvements will stand a much better chance of being realized, when employers are convinced about the relevance and ‘business-case’ of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and genuinely believe that social entrepreneurship, including the provision of equal opportunities can be combined with sustainable international competitiveness. The NUFFIC NICHE 199 project aims to strengthen the BGMEA (Bangladesh Garment Manufactures & Exporters Association) University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) as an academic institute. Faculty members of Nyenrode designed a BUFT Faculty Training Program in order to build capacity in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility and academic skills among BUFT faculty members. The program will be delivered partly in Breukelen and partly in Dhaka. Furthermore, Nyenrode will work on the development of a CSR research agenda for BUFT. WWW.NYENRODE.NL/ELIBRARY RISK MANAGEMENT SEMINAR In the years following the crisis, hardly any improvement was realized in the field of risk management in the Netherlands. In some cases, risk management even deteriorated. Nevertheless, many managers still believe that they have made progress. They have had the wool pulled over their eyes, according to the authors of the Second National Risk Management Survey. Their report ‘How much progress have we made since the crisis?’ was presented at Nyenrode, during the Risk Management Seminar on October 29, 2014. FUTURE OF ACCOUNTANCY A different culture is required within the accountancy profession in order to restore the confidence in the sector. This is the conclusion of a working group of young partners of accountancy firms in a report about the sector for the Dutch House of Representatives that was published on September 25, 2014. The public interest should be first and foremost, trustworthiness and quality should be leading. In order to ensure this, the working group proposes a wide-ranging package of measures. Nyenrode faculty members contributed to the debate prior to the report, served as sparring partners for the working group and also participated in the subsequent debate on the implementation of the proposed measures. Nyenrode year overview 2014 77 Matthijs van der Wel, Executive MBA The Executive MBA at Nyenrode was a life and career changing event for me. Until then, I managed the growth of our business unit using my gut feeling only. Now, I am able to report the relevant facts and figures. I feel more secure, have learned to understand the challenges of the C-suite and how to address these. Learning how to manage international groups and embrace true diversity has provided me with the right attitude to work in an international environment. The entrepreneurship focus of the program has proven to be of great view value when developing new business with layar cases and strategic plans. 78 QUALIT Y MANAGEMENT Deming cycle Nyenrode’s quality management is incorporated in all day-to-day activities of the university. It is in accordance with the Deming cycle. The Deming cycle refers to a four steps management method used in business for quality control. It advocates continuous improvement of processes and products, also known as Plan Do Check Act (PDCA) or Plan Do Study Act (PDSA). Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs (BKO) Teachers stand at the front line when it comes to raising student achievement. Therefore, the quality of our teaching, as well as academic and professional development within the faculty, is of the utmost importance to Nyenrode Business Universiteit. On January 14, 2014, Nyenrode officially started with the Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs (BKO). The BKO is a qualification for teachers in scientific education and it provides Nyenrode faculty teaching staff with the opportunity to reflect on their teaching and to develop professionally. The aim of the University Board is that the majority of the faculty will have acquired their BKO qualification by January 2016. Quality Handbook The Quality Handbook is a tool for quality control and quality improvement for the degree programs. The handbook applies to the whole Nyenrode community. It describes the quality policies and goals of the university, management practices and key processes and it provides guidelines and best practices. Exam Committees & Assessment Committee Exam Committees perform an important task at Nyenrode Business Universiteit: they are responsible by law for assuring the quality of exams and final examinations. Their purpose is to determine, in an independent and expert way, that each student has satisfied the requirements for the award of a degree set by the program concerned. Stichting Nyenrode (Nyenrode Foundation) is the owner of the university, the castle and the estate. The simplification of the structure makes the organization more transparent, and the relationships between the various decision-making bodies clearer. The former Management Board of Nyenrode Foundation and Supervisory Board are now combined in a single Foundation Board. The Articles of Association have been renewed and the tasks and responsibilities of the several committees such as Executive, Real Estate, Audit, Governance, Remuneration Committee have been laid down in the so called By-Laws. st Nyenrode Alumni VCV, Nyenrode Fund and the Works Council are all entitled to nominate one member of the Foundation Board. Until September 1st, 2013, Rector Magnificus Miša Džoljić also acted as CEO, being the sole member of the University Board. From that moment on, the Rector Magnificus has become Chairman of the newly formed University Board that also consists of the Dean (of Degree Programs & Executive Education & Organizational Development) and the Financial Director. Nyenrode year overview 2014 81 FOUNDATION BOARD: New Financial Director Mr. Remmelt Vetkamp has been the new Financial Director and member of the University Board, effective from September 1, 2014. Before his appointment, Vetkamp was a member of the University Board of Zuyd University of Applied Sciences in Limburg [Zuyd Hogeschool]. Remmelt Vetkamp succeeds Joost Pieter de Smeth, who had reached retirement age. De Smeth bid farewell to Nyenrode in the Pfizer lecture hall on Thursday August 28 and later received a painting of him speeching in that hall as a present. Review of the job classification system The “Job Classification Review” project is systematically describing and weighing all jobs at Nyenrode, except faculty positions, and linking them to new salary scales. Nyenrode is assisted in these efforts by employers’ association AWVN. The “Job Classification Review” project commenced at the start of the 2013-2014 academic year. In fact, compared to the earlier versions, only minor alterations were adopted. That version of the GS was firmly rooted in the history of the former Nyenrode Business School and was almost completely focused on the MSc in Management and MBA programs, with students living on the Nyenrode campus. The merger of the NIVRANyenrode programs into Nyenrode Business Universiteit was hardly reflected in the GS, neither were the subsequent changes in governmental and organizational structure or the quality assurance cycles. Therefore a new GS, reflecting the actual situation of Universiteit Nyenrode B.V., was needed and the new version was adopted for the academic year 2014-2015. The new GS is the Constitution of Universiteit Nyenrode B.V. in which all relevant personnel, organizational parts and documents (OERs, Rules and Regulations, Codes of Conduct, Procedures and such) are defined. The new GS does not describe procedures in detail (f.i. the Appeal procedure), but refers to these as being an appendix to the GS. The set up of the new GS suits the current structure and organization of Universiteit Nyenrode B.V. better. The GS will be reviewed each year and, if necessary, adapted. Organizational levels and job titles Acting on the advice of the Governance Model Project Group, the University Board has decided to use a system of fewer echelons of managers and to have their jobs titles in line with their formal tasks. These three echelons are: 1.The board of directors, i.e., the University Board 2.The heads of the line and support departments and the program directors 3.The officers of the line and support departments who, in their managerial capacity, report directly to the second echelon 4.In some teams: supervisors who report to the third echelon Sponsorship policy The University Board has drawn up rules for sponsorship. Applicants from outside Nyenrode must submit their sponsorship applications in writing to the General Secretary. Sponsorship is reserved exclusively for one-off activities or projects that will increase Nyenrode’s brand familiarity or that reflect Nyenrode’s strategy. The risk of undesired precedents is also one of the criteria. Inappropriate Conduct and Behavior Nyenrode has a new Regulation on Inappropriate Conduct/Inappropriate Behavior. This replaces the old Regulation on Sexual Intimidation. The new regulation addresses all forms of inappropriate conduct. The Works Council has made a positive recommendation in respect of the new regulation. Confidential Advisers In addition to Marianne Lammers, Nyenrode now has three new confidential advisers: Marjolijn Oussoren, Pieter-Jan Benes and André Nijhof. For example, we have input on the strategic plan by offering the University Board solicited and unsolicited advice, and we have critically examined the selected research fields where Nyenrode wishes to distinguish itself. Having issued a positive opinion, the Works Council selected various spearheads from the strategic plan that are currently being defined in greater detail by thematic groups. The themes are internationalization, the changing digital learning environment, the emergence of massive open online courses (MOOCs), innovation and research. Internally at Nyenrode, we also focus on process optimization with a view to maximizing client orientation. Other issues include flexible working possibilities and developing and preserving a healthy worklife balance for employees. The Works Council is composed in such a manner that we can properly monitor, and where necessary defend, all interests that concern the workforce. For purposes of giving shape to the strategic plan, we adopt the role of a conscientious partner working in close liaison with the board to safeguard the university’s internal and external interests.” Classes for Colleagues Speakers over the past year have been: Several times a year since 2013, Nyenrode has organized a “class for colleagues” by Nyenrode faculty or staff for other Nyenrode employees. The organizers ask the speaker to give a short presentation about his or her area of expertise, and particularly to identify a set of practical tools that colleagues can use immediately in their work. We now have the Year Overview once a year, and a newsletter reproduced in magazines and via the Nyenrode app. In addition, our highly popular Newsroom on the website includes rolling news on such aspects as learning, research and our community. Of course, internal communication likewise needs to keep in step, so we have been trying to enhance our communication activities inside Nyenrode as well. Every fortnight, as members of the University Board, we take it in turns to write a blog on a topical issue that holds our interest. These blogs are part of a wider palette of communication tools and instances, which also include regular meetings and consultations with center directors. They are also the perfect complement to the Works Council reports that appear on intranet. In like fashion, we are also aiming to take better advantage of the options presented by the Nyenrode intranet. Very many changes are afoot at Nyenrode and it is the Board’s intention to be as transparent as possible about these. Whilst the organization is flexible and resilient enough to deal with these changes, it’s nevertheless vital that these are communicated in a proper and timely fashion. In this way, Board decisions can be made known via intranet. As the University Board, we aim to keep our audience constantly abreast of all these activities. If we believe that a particular aspect hasn’t been adequately covered, we’ll highlight this in our blog. Since the blog has a more personal touch to it, it’s possible to provide our own thoughts and views when we write about a particular subject. And that, we feel, makes it more interesting. We also try to solicit reactions, so members of staff are able to add their own comments underneath the blog. And, it goes without saying, staff can always meet members of the University Board in person. After all, personal contact is by far and away the best means of communication. Nyenrode year overview 2014 87 BENCHMARKS AND ACHIE VEMENTS Nyenrode Business Universiteit is an EQUIS accredited business university with an excellent reputation. It is very well-known as a brand. Distinctive features compared to other universities are the strong focus on the students’ personal development and on community building. Our students are on a ‘development journey’, where character, skills and competencies are developed and trained and above all shaped. Leaders and entrepreneurs that are educated at Nyenrode should have the guts to make decisions, in difficult times as well, respecting both society and the environment as well as sustainable business. Nyenrode is subject to the Higher Education and Research Act of 1993 in the Netherlands, conforming to a Bachelor-Master System, as well as to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). To strengthen our commitment to responsible education, Nyenrode became a signatory member of the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) in 2011. Our bachelor’s and master’s programs have been accredited by the Dutch Ministry of Education (through its national NVAO accreditation program). The Accountancy programs are also accredited by the Commissie Eindtermen Accountantsopleiding (CEA) and the Executive Master of Finance & Control program is also accredited by the Vereniging van Registercontrollers (VRC). Furthermore, our MBAs and MSc in Management programs have been accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA). NVAO accreditation results On September 26, 2013, the new Master of Science in Fiscal Law was accredited by NVAO. The first edition of the program started in 2014. In 2013, the Bachelor of Science in Accountancy, the Master of Science in Accountancy and the Master of Science in Controlling received accreditation by the NVAO for the next six years. Next accreditations for these programs are to take place in 2019. Nyenrode year overview 2014 89 On November 4th and 5th, 2013, fulltime and parttime MSc in Management programs were assessed by a professional panel of NVAO. To meet NVAO standards, Nyenrode proposed a plan with specific adjustments for improvement concerning the academic content of the program and the final outcomes achieved. This plan was accepted by NVAO and the parttime and fulltime MSc in Management programs received a conditional accreditation from the NVAO in 2014. A new, partially accreditation will take place in 2016. No. 1 in Open Programs According to the Financial Times, Nyenrode Business Universiteit is in 2014 once more the best university in the Netherlands in the area of Open Executive Programs. In the ranking the Nyenrode Open Executive Education programs score somewhat higher than the previous year for participants achieving their goals and learning new skills. The score in the area of program planning, learning methods and materials, as well as facilities, has also improved a little compared with last year. The Financial Times ranking is based on the evaluations of participants in the programs. Best Masters Keuzegids Masters 2014 has once again declared that five of the Master programs at Nyenrode Business Universiteit are the 90 best in the Netherlands. In the Business Administration category, both the full-time and the part-time MSc in Management were voted Best Master programs for the fifth time while in the Accountancy & Controlling category, the Nyenrode MSc in Controlling and the MSc in Accountancy programs have been awarded the title Best Masters program for the third time in a row. The Executive Master of Finance and Control is also the best in the Netherlands. Academic codes of conduct Nyenrode adheres to current national academic codes of conduct. In 2001, the Dutch Royal Scientific Academy (Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen, KNAW) and the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek, NWO) issued a notice on scientific integrity and consequently established the National Entity of Scientific Integrity (Landelijk Orgaan Wetenschappelijke Integriteit, LOWI). LOWI implemented the Code of Conduct for Scientific Practice on January 1st, 2005, intended for all universities in the Netherlands. This code aims to address the societal demands and academic requirements for conducting scientific research. Its goal is to enhance the awareness of what good scientific research and teaching entails. NYENRODE FOUNDATION CONSOLIDATED INCOME STATEMENT The turnover of Nyenrode decreased this year by € 0.8 million to € 50.6 million. This decrease was caused primarily by difficult market conditions concerning the accountancy programs. The pre-master of the new Master of Tax Law started in 2013 - 2014. At the same time, turnover growth was realized by our executive programs (Tax & Finance and short open programs) and the BBA program at Nyenrode New Business School (NNBS) in Amsterdam. Nyenrode has had several incidental costs this year which have negatively influenced the operational result. This pertains to the costs relating to the relocation of NNBS, and the departure of part of the team of directors of this school. There was also a wage tax inspection by the tax authorities, relating to the hiring of lecturers, which resulted in an assessment. These costs have been included under staffing costs and accommodation costs. Nyenrode invested € 2.8 million in the past year, primarily in infrastructure of buildings and inventory, as well as in the development of ICT. Investments in previous years amounted to € 2.6 million (2012/13) and € 1.8 million (2011/12), respectively. The equity capital has decreased from € 12.7 million to € 11.4 million, with a solvency of 24%. The expectation for 2014/15 is that executive education programs will continue to grow and the number of new students on accountancy programs will increase again, so that the downward trend turns upwards. For 2014 – 2015, particular efforts will be made to reduce costs, in which context the relatively fixed cost structure is a limiting factor. Anja Teeuwen - van Koningsbruggen parttime MSc in Management, Director Aircraft Servicing KLM After years of working as a general manager in the business sector, the parttime MSc in Management gives me even more inspiration and energy to examine my work and myself critically every day in a constructive manner and to ask myself how I could have done something differently and better. The academic basis of the study program provides more depth and the theory is also highly relevant and can be applied directly. And maybe just as imview portant: I am getting to know many interesting young people. This enlarges my netwith layar work outside of my company and also keeps me on my toes in many ways as a person. Until the summer of 2013, Nyenrode had three levels of management: the Supervisory Board, the Board of the Foundation and the University’s management. Since then, we have simplified Nyenrode’s management structure quite considerably, reducing what were formerly three layers to two: one for supervision and one for executive management. At the same time, the structure of the university’s management also underwent a drastic change. Until the summer of 2013, the Rector Magnificus was also the CEO. We have changed that and the Rector is now a member of the University Board on which the Dean and the Financial Director also have a seat. Rector Magnificus Miša Džoljić is the Chair of the University Board. These changes have led to more transparency in the division of responsibilities between the University Board and the Foundation Board, something we, as an institute that preaches “good governance”, find extremely important. Last year, Nyenrode as a whole, achieved a negative result, partly due to the ongoing difficulties of the market for a number of courses. We will do everything in our power to change our financial situation for the better this academic year. Nonetheless, 94 we are forced to observe that to a large extent, the disappointing results were caused by two things: investments and also restructuring projects. And that means that many things are faring well too. The estate has not looked as beautiful as this in years. Recently, we have invested heavily in buildings – remember the renovation of the lecture halls in the De Rooij-building, the renovation of the Plesman Pavilion, the rebuilding work on the roof and the entrance to the castle, the conversion of the Building 3 Fontyne into a venue for events, the creation of new spot-on locations for the LEArN Factory and 60 Acres and the renovation of our student accommodation. The Nyenrode New Business School has moved to entirely new premises in the very heart of Amsterdam. It’s an impressive list. At the same time, we have to keep tweaking our plans: we must make more use of our buildings to increase the revenue so that our financial results will improve from now on. “The estate has not looked as beautiful as this in years.” As we make our way out of the financial doldrums, we shall need to apply plenty of Nyenrode entrepreneurship. Hopefully, we can work together with our alumni on many projects, as they not only provide a tight-knit network but also creativeness and enterprise. Finally, I would like to thank our former Financial Director, Joost Pieter de Smeth. Joost Pieter retired in the summer of 2014. And I would like to wish his successor, Remmelt Vetkamp, the best of luck in making our wonderful institute even better and more beautiful. I have not forgotten the staff of the university and would like to thank them for their dedication in the past year.
