Remember, every draft is different, so maintaining a narrow
The draft style game, AFL Fantasy Elite, is the fastest growing form of Fantasy Football in the country, mainly due to
the fun and interactive platform it creates for you and your
mates to fight for bragging rights. Every player you draft in
Elite will be unique to your team, for example if you win the
number one selection and pick Tom Rockliff, he is off the
table and therefore nobody else can select him.
Once the draft has finished, your opponents can of course
make trade offers to acquire Rocky, but let’s be honest, it
would need to be a good offer!
Read this Draft Kit and make sure to take it to your draft

turn to make a selection. Further your research by following

Remember, every draft is different, so maintaining a narrow
minded strategy can be difficult given the unpredictability of
a draft, so the key is to be well research and stay cool. If you
do want to implement a particular strategy, the position
rankings should provide a handy guide for you during the
draft, so crossing off previously drafted players as they are
selected is a good idea as it will give you a quick idea who
the best available players are in each position.
an argument that if you miss one of the ‘big four’ you can
afford to hold off until the latter stages as you can ‘throw a
blanket over the rest’. Strategies can be questioned and
panic can often set in when a number of quality players are
taken from a particular position and it can cause people to
trade in players well before their worth as you can see with
Kurt Tippett where his coach paid well ‘overs’ with a
regrettable selection.
The unpredictability of drafts was evident in our mock draft
where the importance of selecting a good ruck has been a
hot topic and was on full display. The drop off in scoring
ability in the big man department is dramatic and there is
Use your early picks wisely, you want reliable franchise
players to set the standard for your squad and there will be
plenty of time for you to take a risk on breakout players in
the later stages of the draft.
With so many different sized leagues it’s hard to talk about
the first round as an exact science, so let’s just go with a top
16. Nailing this pick will be the difference between a good
year and a great year. (See Coaches that picked Ablett at
pick two last year – they’re still cursing him)
When your first pick comes around you’re going to be faced
with the same dilemma that you faced last year and most
likely will face again next year – Do you pick a midfielder or
do you take the forward? And this year, to complicate things
even more, you have to ask – Do you take a ruckman? Not
since the days of the great Dean Cox have we had to
consider taking a ruckman in the first round, this year an
argument could be made for both big Stef and Goldy to
easily slot in to the top 10.
In the forward line we have to think about Dusty, Montagna,
Barlow and Toby Greene inside 16. Last year most AFL
Fantasy coaches grappled with Dusty/Buddy/Goodard at
around pick 4 or 5. This year only the bravest coaches will
take Buddy in the first round and Goddard is now a pure
mid. Dusty is by far the safest option and should remain in
coaches top 6 calculations. Montagna’s age is a concern but
he continues to prove Fantasy coaches wrong and IF he can
stay injury free he will reward the coaches that take him in
the top 8. Barlow is the big one for me. Ross Lyon has
declared that he was played out of position last year and he
seems primed for a big 2016. If he does indeed get more
midfield time, he is a lock to get his average back over 100
and needs to be seriously looked at in the top 8. Greene is a
real high risk high reward selection, but he just doesn’t have
the runs on the board like the other do so I’d be more
cautious with him and hope someone else takes him so you
don’t have to!
I can’t really mount a strong case for a defender to go top
16. Mcveigh is the pick of the lot, however he hasn’t had a
pre-season and the next four or five defenders don’t warrant
a first round selection being used on them.
The midfield as usual is where we find the cream. Ordering
Rockliff, Ablett, Pendlebury, Steven, Hannebury, Kennedy,
Beams, Lewis, Fyfe, Mitchell, Macrae and Gaff is no easy
task.

The key here is obviously not to panic. If all the forwards
start getting picked, make sure you assess whether the next
available forward is really that much better than Buddy,
Deledio or Devon Smith. who will all be around a bit later
on. Quality game winning 110+ scoring MIDs are like gold,
so be sure to look long and hard at the guys that have done
it year in year out!

After a poor run of form or an injury, a ‘draft sleeper’ will go now take the mantle as the No. 1 ruckman along with
into the draft further down the rankings page based on their Callum Sinclair who has left the Eagles to join the Sydney
averages from 2015 and might be over-looked by your rivals. Swans. More opportunities only means more points.
The defenders have several players who due to a change of
role saw their Fantasy worth plummet and Elliot Yeo heads
the list. With many key defenders back for the Eagles, he’ll
be released up the ground for more points.
Toby Greene’s lack of midfield opportunities last year
meant he had a season to forget. He averaged 103 in 2014
and with Treloar gone, he can certainly hit those heights
again.
Liberatore and Crouch missed the 2015 season and will
return this year. Many Elite coaches may have forgotten this
as they are more than capable of averaging 100+. Make sure
they don’t slip too far down the list on draft day.
HOT TIP: Prepare your draft rankings with care. The most
important work in a draft is done before it even starts. Make
the necessary adjustments to the players who may have
slipped in their average from the previous year and highlight
those that will be over-looked by your rivals. At the end of
With Patrick Ryder on the sidelines, Matthew Lobbe should the day, it’s these players that will win you the premiership.
In rounds six, 12 and 18 some players’ positions are adjusted based on where they are playing for their respective
teams. Predicting these changes will give you an advantage
when drafting your team as the value of these players will
be significantly increased.
Nathan Buckley has already come out and labelled our beloved Fantasy Pig Dane Swan as a forward this year to make
way for their younger midfield brigade. At the end of 2015,
Brendon Goddard spent the majority of his football across
half-back. He was nearly granted Dual Position status this
year but might be needed more in the middle to support
the depleted Bombers. Ryan Griffen is one the front runners to get ‘DEF’ added to his name, along with Gold
Coast’s David Swallow who has held the status in the past.
Over his Fantasy career, Robbie Gray has always carried
forward status next to his name and no one will be
surprised if this is re-instated at some point throughout the
year.
HOT TIP: Don’t be afraid to back
your judgement and draft a player
higher than you normally would, if
you feel they will gain Dual Position
Status. Switching Dane Swan from
the midfield and into your
forward line during the season,
could end up being a winning
move.
A ‘vest slider’ can be found way down your ranking sheet
based on what they averaged last year. This average has
been dramatically effected by the number of vests that these
players wore and with the vest rule a thing of the past, these
players should flourish once again.
Matt DeBoer wore the dreaded vest eight times last year
and averaged 83 in his last four games and 78 for the year
when he avoided it. Billy Hartung was also handed the vest
eight times last year in his 18 games and when he didn’t
wear it, he boosted his average by 21pts to 81. Excluding Zac
Williams’ first three vested games he went on to average 80
for the year. Lachie Hunter paints a similar picture. He
averaged 78 in last year, but actually averaged 96 without
the vest and with Dangerfield gone, Matt Crouch might be
the player who steps up. He averaged 71 last year, but
averaged 85 when he didn’t wear a vest.
HOT TIP: With the vest out the window, move these
players up your draft rankings and back them in at the
average you feel they are capable of producing. There’s
nothing to slow them down now.
For our Mock Draft outlined on the pages following, we used
the default settings in Fantasy Elite. These happened to be
the most popular settings amongst commissioners in 2015.
 Squad size of 18 on field players (5-6-2-5, ie. five defend-
ers, six midfielders, two rucks, five forwards) with four
bench players. We didn’t draft the four bench players.
 Snake draft format with first round picks going from 1, 2,
3, etc and reversing for every second round.
 60 second draft turn time.
 Byes are switched off, no captains and playing each other
twice before finals in our eight team league.
There are many other ways for commissioners to customise
leagues to suit coaches such as lockout type (Friday night or
rolling), how free agency works, auto emergency as well as
the number of teams competing; from as few as six up to 20.
If you are new to Fantasy Elite, consider playing the smaller
squad size of 11 (3-4-1-3) players on field with four bench
players.

Pressure is on to get the first pick right and therefore the decision
was simple – Rocky is the man! I then wanted a premium defender
and forward that were both part time mids, as well as a gun
ruckman. Next it was about nailing some gun defenders as I
thought they looked stronger than the forwards available at the
time. On reflection I may have gone too tall in my forward line,
however I’m confident that my midfield will stand up to anyone’s!

Stefan Martin is the equal of most midfielders, so I had to take him
at two. Next I went for two gun midfielders which allowed me to
leave the midfield alone for a while and focus on my backs/
forwards. I tried to target the young guns that have either just
broken out or are about to – so KK, D.Smith, Docherty, Billings and
Grigg were easy calls. Sprinkle in some older wiser heads in Buddy
(bargain), Ebert, Mackie, Lecras and factor in the return of the
fantasy gun Libba, and this squad goes a long long way. (Don’t
mind Sandi and Hanley with the last two thank you very much!)
Due to the limited number of premium rucks and the fast drop off
in their scoring ability, I used my first two picks in the big man
department by snapping up Goldy and Blicavs who are two of the
three in that position capable of averaging triple figures at seasons
end. I am excited about what Rosa and Aish will do in my
questionable back line, while Barlow in the forward line with pick
35 was a no brainer. My midfield looks very reliable and I expect a
100 point average by all my players across that line, giving my
team the consistency it needs to be a contender.
I worked hard to secure a premium scorer in each line and I am
happy to say I achieved that with Boyd, Ablett, Gawn and Dahlhaus
all set for big years. The fast drop off in defenders resulted in me

Selecting consistent players was the order of the day for the
Warne Dawgs. Taking Scott Pendlebury with the first selection was
a good way to start and drafting a range of premium forwards who
should all average more than 80 is a bonus. I’m hoping that with
natural progression, Jack Macrae and Ollie Wines will add to their
numbers. The big name rucks went early, so I left getting my two
right until the end and to be honest, I’m pretty happy with Ben
McEvoy and Ivan Maric as they will shoulder most of the load and
increase their output on last season.
It’s a mix of young and old at TC Chargers’ park. Midfielders with
the potential to be among the top few were snapped up in three of
the first four picks including Dayne Beams and Joel Selwood who
should improve on last season. With my last midfield selection, at
pick 102, I took myself. Hopefully I can get the job done for the
Chargers. If Steve Johnson can average over 90 points again in his
new colours, he will be the pick of the draft for me. With a bit of
luck, the old boys will help put a trophy on the cabinet.
With Stef Martin and Todd Goldstein snapped up very early, I
jumped on the ‘Big Sauce’ as soon as I could. He’s a picture of
consistency and will serve me well all year. I tried to keep an even
spread across my team as the draft unfolded. I focussed on a
combination of premium scorers across the board and collected
some top players by doing so. Josh P. Kennedy and Brett Deledio
both ended 2015 like freight trains and along with my team mate
Rory Laird, they will shoulder the scoring load across each line.
At Team Calvinator we have a common saying “Defenders are
pretenders”, and that’s why they were the last players selected.
My crew still have the potential of averaging 75+ and should be
solid enough until I trade them to my rivals with some crafty deals
early in the year. My main focus was to secure these premium
midfielders and forwards who have the potential of scoring 140+
on their day. Jack Steven and Dusty Martin certainly fit that
category and after huge 2015 seasons, I’m expecting them to start
with a BANG and to lead team Calvinator to glory!
