The LeeShore Center is very
grateful for the generous community
support during our 26th KSRM Radiothon fundraiser on September 8th.
Cash and in-kind contributions pledged
during Radiothon are used to support
the agency’s services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in
Jennifer Joanis, president of the Board, with the Brown Bears. our local community. Although we still
have contributions coming in, total cash and in-kind donated is more than $12,000
to date.
The success of our fundraising event was made possible by the hard work
of many individuals who graciously gave of their time and energy to help. While
we were on-air at KSRM providing information and education on domestic violence, sexual assault and LeeShore services, LeeShore board members were
busy in the community, collecting donations and pledges.
Our sincere thanks and appreciation goes out to all those who helped make
our fundraising efforts such a success: Jennifer Joanis, Jan Daniels, Jesse Scott,
Nate Kiel, and the Kenai Brown Bears. Thank you to LeeShore staff Barbara Waters, Kathy Tomrdle, Darla Rosing, Nona Leigh and Jennette Browning for your
hard work copying posters, manning phone lines at KSRM, taking pledges and
processing paperwork.
Special appreciation and recognition goes to Greg Daniels, the Kenai River
Brown Bears, and Halcyon Salon, for providing outstanding raffle prizes. Proceeds
from their generous donations totaled almost $1,000 in cash.
Thank you to New Beginnings Kenai Gym, Jumpin’ Junction, KSRM, M & M
Market, Frames & Things, North Country Fair, Sportsman’s Warehouse,
Sweeney’s, and the Kenai River Brown Bears for providing space for donation
drop-off.
Our special thanks to those who participated as Radiothon guest speakers:
Chief Gus Sandahl (KPD), Capt. Andrew Greenstreet (AST), Chief Peter Mylarnik
(SPD), and Lisa Roberts (United Way).
Thanks also to our on-air host Senator Peter Micciche. KSRM General
Manager Matt Wilson for donating use of the KSRM facility and air time, and Dr.
Steve Hileman for his Radiothon poster artwork contribution.
On behalf of our board of directors and staff, thank you all! We appreciate
the generosity of businesses and community members in our local area. Thanks
for supporting our efforts to end domestic violence and sexual assault in the central peninsula.

National Women’s History Month
March is National Women’s History Month, and March 8th is International Woman’s Day.
This year’s theme is Weaving the Stories of Women’s Lives. The theme presents the opportunity to weave women’s stories – individually and collectively – into the essential fabric of
our nation’s history.
Accounts of the lives of individual women are critically important because they reveal exceptionally strong role models who share a more expansive vision of what a woman can do. The
stories of women’s lives, and the choices they made, encourage girls and young women to think larger
and bolder, and give boys and men a fuller understanding of the female experience. Knowing women’s achievements challenges stereotypes and upends social assumptions about who women are and
what women can accomplish today.
There is a real power in hearing women’s stories, both personally and in a larger context. Remembering and recounting tales of our ancestors’ talents, sacrifices, and commitments inspires today’s generations and opens the way to the future.
2015 is also the 35th anniversary of the Women’s History Movement and the National Women’s History Project. After decades of dedicated research and technological advances, the stories of American
women from all cultures and classes are accessible and visible as never before. Numerous scholars
and activists helped shape the Women’s History Movement, and also provided the research and energy which created and sustains the National Women’s History Project. Find out more by visiting http://
www.nwhp.org/ to find an event or to learn about the 2015 honorees.

Current Events
Governor Parnell proclaimed November 9th 2014 as Women Veteran's Day in Alaska. He encouraged all Alaskans to recognize the contributions of generations of servicewomen to our
nation and the state.
The World Health Organization declared November 17th World Prematurity Day. Every year
an estimated 15 million babies are born preterm, or born alive before 37 weeks. That is one in
ten babies, and the numbers are rising. Preterm birth is the leading cause of death globally in
children under five years old, and three quarters of those deaths could be saved with current
cost-effective interventions.

January—Stalking Awareness Month
January 2015 marks the 11th anniversary of the first National Stalking Awareness Month. In
the past ten years, there has been an increased awareness of stalking and enhanced responses to stalking across the country. Laws have been strengthened, tens of thousands of
professionals trained on responding to stalking, and services for victims of stalking have
been expanded. However, 6.6 million adults are still stalked in the United States.
The Stalking Resource Center of the National Center for Victims of Crime partnered with the Office on Violence Against Women, U.S. Department of Justice,
in observing National Stalking Awareness Month 2015. They have a wealth of
resources to share with you. You can take an interactive quiz; download videos, fact sheets, guides, at http://www.stalkingawarenessmonth.org

It’s the new year, and time to sign up for your Permanent Fund Dividend. While you’re
dreaming of the trip you’ll take, the toys you’ll buy, or the bills you’ll pay off, take a moment to think about all the good you can do for others. Last year the LeeShore Center received $3,975.00. We thank you for your generosity.
If you give… and your neighbor does… and another… it will add up quickly. With one
