Business of the Month - Valley Herald
The Valley Herald was originally purchased by Sherrie
Widmer and her late husband, Dennis, in the early 2000‘s.
A turn of events has put Sherrie Widmer back at the helm
as sole owner of the Valley Herald.
Widmer’s philosophy, and the Valley Herald’s motto, is
“For the Community, by the Community.” This motto
states a clear objective for the community weekly newspaAmbassador News
per, and the important part the community plays in the
Membership Luncheon publication. Since regaining control in September, 2013,
the owner has been pleased with the overwhelming support and participation the community has played.

Widmer appreciates and acknowledges feedback regarding
the paper. Listening to comments “helps keep the paper
on track. Everyone has a story. It is our job to tell that
story.”

Reaching content and subscription goals in a short period of time, Widmer is looking forward
to expanding the size of the paper. The growth formula equals content + subscriptions + advertising + employees. Growing a newspaper can be equated to a jigsaw puzzle. Each piece
needs to be intricately placed in order to get the full picture. “We are working to keep the
quality where it is and grow it smart.”
Widmer highly values the historical significance the Valley Herald has played in the MiltonFreewater area. Being in the same category as former owners, Dorothy Heard and Vilene Ringhand, is humbling to the current owner. A long-term goal of Widmer’s is to continue the legacy these two former owners commenced. “They made a difference in the community and that
is as much as we can hope to do.”
How does Sherrie Widmer feel about owning the Valley Herald? “It is a delight and a challenge.”
The Valley Herald is open Tuesday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

New Face For Muddy Frogwater Festival!
WANT TO BE PART OF A POSITIVE CHANGE? From what we’ve been hearing, most
everyone would love to see the Muddy Frogwater Festival take on a new face! We have
heard lots of feedback of what the festival “is not”, now we are ready to work on what the
festival “can be”. But how do we get there and who drives that bus? Are you willing to be
part of the solution? Do you have a favorite hobby or a game you can turn into a competition? Grilling or a horseshoe competition, bicycle race, car or motorcycle show, dessert
making challenge? We know everyone would love to see the festival revitalized, so now is
the time to step forward and tell us what you have in mind. Call to put your name on the
festival planning list. Let’s work together and see what we can do.
Here……Community Comes First!
Oregon Main Street is Coming to Milton-Freewater!
The Milton-Freewater Downtown Alliance (MFDA) is excited to announce that this month
the Oregon Main Street Program will be bringing a group of professionals from around the
country in town for a few days to learn about our area and provide some assistance in planning the next steps forward for a thriving Milton-Freewater. After spending April 15th & 16th
in interviews with various groups in town, the group will present its recommendations to
the entire community on Thursday, April 17th at 6pm in the Community Building. We encourage all of you to come, enjoy a hot dog and chips, and see what they have to say! If
you’d like to be interviewed or would like more information, contact Alina Launchbaugh at
541-938-3331 or [email protected].

The Business & Community Showcase opened on March 20th to dynamic displays of twenty
local businesses. Samples of food, baked goods, wine and beer completed the evening as
attendees strolled from space to space and viewed the best of the best in our valley. The
Pioneer Posse Court, Rochelle Kralman and Cheyenne Afdahl are always a welcome addition as they greet and visit with guests about their exciting upcoming season. The moment
everyone waits for, is the announcement of the grand door prize winner. Trevor Moon,
owner of the Dairy Queen sponsored a Kindle Fire and the lucky winner was Gerry Seagraves. Lots of other drawings were held during the course of the evening, courtesy of the
attending businesses. This is an annual event each year and the Chamber Ambassadors hope
you will make note to not miss next year’s showcase, whether it is showcasing your business or attending as a guest. Thank you to everyone that participated and came out to enjoy
this evening of sharing, networking and good will.
Tickets will go on sale soon for the Administrative Professional’s Day Luncheon on April
23rd. Mark your calendar so you don’t miss this GOLD MEDAL DAY!

2nd Quarter Service Award
The Chamber is pleased to announce Wildhorse Foundation as the recipient
of the Chamber’s 2nd Quarter Service Award. The Wildhorse Foundation was
established in January 2001 for the purpose of formalizing charitable giving on
behalf of the Wildhorse Resort & Casino and the Confederated Tribes of the
Umatilla Indian Reservation. Funds from the Foundation are used for education, public health, public safety, gambling addiction prevention, education and
treatment, the arts, environmental protection, education or preservation, cultural activities, salmon restoration, and historic preservation.
“The generous contributions of the Wildhorse Foundation have given many
opportunities to so many different agencies that would otherwise limit their
contributions to the people they serve,” said Cheryl York, Executive Director
for the Chamber. “Many programs would be scaled back or completely discontinued without the funds they receive
from the Foundation.”
There are four opportunities during each year to apply for a grant from Wildhorse Foundation, the quarterly deadlines
for requests are January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1. For more information on Wildhorse Foundation guidelines
or to print an application, visit http://www.wildhorseresort.com/footer/foundation.html or contact Tiah DeGrofft,
foundation administrator at 541-966-1628.

World of Technical Devices Brings New Woes
Did you know digital copy machines have a hard drive? The hard drive is the internal memory of your copy machine
and stores all the information you copy each day. Government offices, banks, accountants, medical facilities and
schools all require personal information that is copied over and over throughout your lifetime. Once a machine is retired, it may very possibly go to a warehouse where it awaits being shipped to a purchaser anywhere around the
world. If the business releasing the machine did not have hardware installed for the purpose of scrubbing the hard
drive, the machine goes out with all the saved documents in tact and readily available for downloading through an
online application. The CBS Evening News has released a you tube video with detailed information on how this is happening and what businesses and organizations should do to avoid releasing personal information of clients, customers
and our children. It will be worth your time to visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8JKnVWoK7w for a first-hand
view of this news release.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8JKnVWoK7w

The Chamber welcomes Dragon’s Gate Brewery and Shangri-La Boutique as our newest partners.
Dragon's Gate is a small artisanal brewery located on the Oregon/Washington border, specializing in American and
Belgian style Ale's using estate grown hops on their own property’s grounds. Owners, Jennifer Gregory, a former manager from the wine and beverage industry and her husband Adam, a home brewer for many years, combine their talents
to craft quality ales. Located at 52288 Sunquist Road in Milton-Freewater, the tasting room is open on Saturday, noon to
4pm and by appointment only Monday through Friday. They are closed on Sundays. Additional information about
Dragon’s Gate Brewery can be found on their website at www.dragonsgatebrewery.com. Welcome to the Chamber
Jennifer & Adam.
For the ultimate shopping experience, Shangri-La Salon & Boutique is a “must see” destination all year long. Jeanne
& George Ehmer started restoring the former Carnegie Library building in 2005. They transformed it into an attraction
boutique filled to the brim with an imaginative mix of ever changing merchandise. Stop by and welcome the Ehmers; linger, enjoy and relax as you browse through the nooks and crannies of unique gifts & home décor that are artfully arranged in themed sections such as western, wine, lodge, country and more. Shangri-La is the perfect destination to shop
for any season, any reason, as inventory is plentiful and turns over quick allowing for more exciting items. It is certainly a
place to discover! Special events are offered at certain times during the year; watch for dates in the Chamber calendar.
Located at 815 S Main, Shangri-La is open Tuesday through Friday 9am-5:30pm and Saturday 9am-1pm. Pedicures and
nail care is also available by appointment. Call 541-938-0111. Please note, debit and credit cards are not accepted.

Coming Soon!…….the new Chamber Visitor’s Guide! Mark Driver, owner of the local Tidbits publication has been
awarded the contract to design and print our new booklet scheduled to come out this Spring. We would love to have
some new exciting photos; we are looking for people willing to share, we will make sure you are given proper credit for
any submissions. What we need………………photos that represent who we are as a community; sports, entertainment,
festivals, historical or agricultural landscapes. Tourists to the valley love visual stimulation to give them a sense of the
area they are visiting and photos are the best way to give them a glimpse of what we have and what they would like to
see while in the area. Send your digital prints via email, along with your permission to use them to the Chamber office at
[email protected]. A quality publication is the result of a team working together.
