Visite naaweb.org

Summer Programs Guide 2012
he Children’s Trust is committed to
improving the lives of children and
families in Miami-Dade County by
making strategic investments in their futures.
With that mission in mind, we are pleased to
offer this comprehensive Summer 2012
Programs Guide. We hope that parents and
caregivers alike find the information to be helpful
and informative.
Investing in summer camps and after-school
programs are a cornerstone of Children’s Trust
funding. Many of the funded programs are
included in the listings section of this guide. For
both summer and after-school,The Children’s
Trust nurtures high-quality programs for children
around the county and especially in traditionally
under-served communities. All our programs are
inclusive of children with disabilities.
Quality summer and after-school programs
support working families by keeping children safe
and by inspiring learning. Fun, engaging activities –
from arts to sports to technology – help children
improve their personal, social and skills, while
strengthening academic skills. To avoid the “summer slide,” quality summer camps include a variety
of activities that foster literacy and reading.
The options listed in this guide represent a
broad selection of programs operated by public,
private and faith-based agencies and institutions.
Programs funded by The Children’s Trust are
identified with a sun symbol in the zip code
where they are located.
Summer and after-school programs are not
licensed by the State of Florida. Programs funded
by The Children’s Trust adhere to standards
proposed by the National AfterSchool Association, which also has instituted an accreditation
procedure.Visit their website, www.naaweb.org,

Summer Camp
3
As an involved parent you know that learning shouldn’t stop in the
summer. In fact, it’s critical that your child’s education doesn’t “slide”
during the summer months. What’s called for is a flavor of learning
different from the school year, a more relaxed one that combines
interactivity, fun and enriching activities.
T
he most likely place to find this
is at a high-quality summer camp,
such as the many affordable options funded by The Children’s
Trust. Quality camps offer a safe and stimulating environment, one that ensures that your
child’s reading skills, the core of their academic
progress, will be maintained or improved.
Summer camps offer a unique opportunity
to shift how children experience learning,
especially for children whose experience with
school has not always been positive.
Building Educated Leaders for Life (BELL)
is a national nonprofit that partners with
schools in high-poverty neighborhoods to
offer summer programs. Among their goals
is to transform the way those children experience learning.
“We offer an experience that has a different look-and-feel from the ordinary school
day, one that fosters academic skills and also
builds self-confidence,” says Michael Sikora,
BELL communications director.
Working in small interactive groups with
certified teachers and trained assistants, expectations are high, and activities are diverse.
Mornings are dedicated to engaging literacy
and math activities, while the afternoons are
used for enrichment – leadership development, arts, music, drama, science, creative
writing, foreign languages and more.
Although BELL has yet to partner in
Miami-Dade, their summer learning approach
of encouraging interactivity, engagement and
movement is modeled by many Children’s
Trust summer camps.
Spend some time in the weeks before school
ends exploring your summer camp options in
terms of location and activities offered. Some
camps offer a special-interest focus – nature,
drama, dance, sports, swimming, technology and
others – an ideal way for your child to explore
an interest or advance a particular talent.
Consider multiple options for camps as the
most popular fill up early. Ask for recommendations from friends, family and neighbors
who have enrolled their children previously
in programs. Call prospective camps with any
questions and tour the site first-hand whenever possible.
Staff at camps should be welcoming and
respectful. In terms of language and culture,
they should reflect the families they are
serving. Staff members should be friendly and
cordial towards each other, and be clearly
encouraging of a child’s natural innovation
and curiosity.
All camps should meet acceptable supervision guidelines. Large camps may accommodate hundreds of children, yet appropriate
ratios of attentive, engaged staff will ensure
that your child enjoys an enriching, positive
experience. For children between the ages of
6 to 10, there should be one adult for every
10 children. Above age 11, one adult staff
member for every 15 children is considered
acceptable. Around water, however, more supervision is required.
Consider the camp’s facilities. Is the space
safe, well-lit and large enough for children to
enjoy their activities? Is there plenty of outdoor space? Shade? Scan for potential safety
hazards both indoors and out. Ask about
supervision in the play yard and regarding
physical play. Are water activities offered?
Make sure that supervising staff know CPR
(Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and that
swimming instructors are certified.
If your child has a disability, advise the camp
as soon as possible; most camps will do their
best to accommodate your child. Ask about
opportunities to socialize with peers with disabilities and for the chance to network with
other families. It’s also important that the activities and rules be appropriate for your child
with special needs.
Safety should be the highest concern for
any program. Staff must always monitor when
children arrive, leave and who picks them
up. Your child will be outside for at least a
portion of the day, a fact that presents its
own safety risk. Healthy snacks and food and
plenty of water and beverages (low sugar,
non-carbonated!) will go a long way to keep
your son or daughter from wilting. Ask when
and what foods and beverages are provided.
To find the “best” camp for your family,
start looking early and consider your budget, location and your child’s best interests.
Especially, look for a camp with more “F-U-N”
in the learning, to be sure there’s no “slide” in
their education this summer.

ey, roller skating, rollerblading, skateboarding and even yoga. The City of Hialeah
Parks and Recreation, like most cities, offers
different year-round activities for children,
including non-athletic programs. “A lot of
kids are not into spor ts, but may be into
dance, drama or acting,” Lagomacini says.
The City of Hialeah is also implementing
a vir tual fitness program where kids can
play games on an Xbox or PlayStation, then
go outside and practice the same moves.

Martial Arts
It’s important to keep
your child physically
active, especially
during the summer
months when the
temptation to sit in
front of the television
or computer may be
too strong to resist.
F
or some kids, being physically
active may take the form of
organized sports, while others
prefer alternative and more creative ways to keep moving.
“Parents are experts on their own children;
they know best what [activity their] child
would most enjoy and can encourage regular
engagement in that activity,” explains Dr. Peter
A. Gorski, M.P.A., chief health and child development officer for The Children’s Trust, and
a developmental and behavioral pediatrician
who teaches public health, pediatrics and psychiatry at the university level.
“No child needs to be forced to have fun,”
Gorski says. “If you know that your child really
enjoys some activity, encourage [him or her]
and ensure that they have the opportunity to
experience it regularly.”
The most important thing is to know
your child’s temperament, Gorski says. Some
children enjoy organized team sports, others
individual exercise. And then there are those
who are motivated by social engagement and
tend only to participate in an activity when
they’re with a friend. Many children jump in
and adapt easily to new situations and challenges, while others require a little extra
encouragement. “Children will let you know
when they’re having a good time.”
So how does a parent choose the right
activity for their child? Gorski recommends
exposing children to a wide range of activities
and letting them select ones they enjoy most.
You can then narrow down the activities. Also,
try leading your children toward activities you
would enjoy doing with them, such as biking,
walking or playing ball. The Summer Olympic
Games provide a good opportunity to watch
athletes in action and identify activities that
may be of interest.
If you have an athletic child, consider enrolling them in seasonal sports, such as football in the fall or basketball in the winter and
spring. “Whatever the pros are doing is what
we are also doing,” says Jeffrey Lagomacini,
education and special programs director
for City of Hialeah’s Creative Learning &
Play (CL&P), a summer and out-of-school
program. “Kids will watch a sport or go to
a Dolphin or Heat game, and [get excited
about that] sport and want to play.”
For kids who dislike organized spor ts,
there are plenty of chances to explore different physical activities and non-traditional
spor ts, such as track and field, gymnastics,
swimming, tennis, bowling, Ping-Pong, hock-

field trips, arts and crafts, and other activities.

Fit Kids of America
The Fit Kids of America program offers
summer and after-school programs and is
a great way to expose children to a wide
variety of physical activities and help them
cultivate a love of fitness.
“Not everyone likes the same thing; you
might like chicken, but [you] don’t want it
for breakfast, lunch and dinner,” says
Rhonda L. Smith, C.P.T., co-director and
founder of Fit Kids of America. “Some kids
like basketball, but we expose them to all
other disciplines. We want them to have
an arsenal of different [activities], so when
they’re older and they might say, ‘I’m over
basketball, but I remember I like soccer or
getting on a treadmill.’ You have to make
it interesting.”
The program takes a multidisciplinary
approach to fitness, incorporating team
sports and fitness classes. Children have
access to an array of fitness activities,
including racquetball, Ping-Pong, cardio
kickboxing, aerobics, basketball, volleyball,
soccer, softball, flag football, hip-hop dance
and strength training. Fit for Kids America
also offers a fully equipped, state-of-the-art
gym with treadmills, step climbers, bikes and
ellipticals. Learn more at fitkidsclub.com.

Sometimes parents can get carried away and unknowingly put pressure on a child to
participate in an activity or sport. Gorski offers some tips so you can monitor yourself and
your child.

Martial arts are a terrific activity for children who do not like organized sports. The
benefits are two-fold:, strengthening both
the body and the mind. The activity’s focus
“helps with ADHD, developmental delays,
social skills and learning disabilities,” explains
Kelly Regalado, program director of United
Martial Arts Academy. Here, children set
their own goals and choose the skills they’d
like to accomplish, which helps build their
self-esteem. “Other benefits include improvement in gross and fine motor skills, weight
maintenance, [and] better eating and sleeping
[habits],” Regalado says. The academy offers
a summer camp and after-school program
in which children work on their form and
practice techniques according to their size,
age and experience. Children enrolled in the
summer camp also spend one hour with a

• If a child seems uncomfortable or unhappy when starting a new activity, consider if it’s a temperamental issue that will change once the child adapts, or if the child is genuinely un
happy in this setting.
• When picking them up from an activity, ask them if they had fun. “Children will be honest, if you let them.” If they’re not enthusiastic, let them know it’s OK. Many people have to try out several things before they find what they really enjoy.
• Look for physical signs of unhappiness, such as stomachaches or tiredness. Other red flags are if they’re weepy, not eating or sleeping well, or whining more. If you notice any of these symptoms, something may not be serving the child’s well-being. Ask them how they’re
feeling, how the activity is going and if anyone is giving them a hard time. It might not be the activity, but the other children or the instructor that is causing them distress.
• If your child displays regular amounts of energy — or even increased energy — when
performing routine activities around the house, completing homework and during meal times, it’s a good sign that your child is not stressed.

Did You Know?
h Children learn best by playing
By Millie Acebal Rousseau
Once upon a time the library was a quiet
sanctuary, a place for kids to check out
books, read silently, conduct research or
complete homework.
T
oday’s library is so much more. “We are providing additional resources that allow families to actively interact with each other in
activities such as games, book discussions, art programs and other
fun and literary programs,” says Lucrece Louisdhon-Louinis, assistant director
of Community Outreach, Programming and Special Services at Miami-Dade
Public Library System.
Each year, the library offers more than 1,000 special activities, including
magic and wildlife shows, storytelling, drama and writing workshops, music
and dance, open mics and story slams, arts and crafts, yoga classes and even
ping-pong tournaments.
Libraries are an especially valuable resource during the summer when you
want to make sure your children don’t lose the skills they learned in school.
Many local branches offer storytelling in the morning and afternoon, as well
as arts and crafts. Children can also play trivia games on the computers and
work in groups. Here are some of the many programs offered by the library:
Summer Reading Program
The library’s summer reading program brings your children’s favorite books
to life via storytelling and events. Kids can reenact stories and become their
favorite storybook character. Or, working with artists, they can participate in
arts and crafts activities that allow their creativity and literacy skills to blossom.
The program consists of three age categories: children from birth to age12,
teens ages 13-18, and adults. The program strives to help children maintain
and improve their reading proficiency from the academic year.
Parents are encouraged to take an active role in the program. Each year
a theme is chosen and families sign in and receive a brochure. Parents can
then keep track of the books their child finishes and inform the library. In turn,
the library works with community partners to offer reading rewards such

gift certificates. “It doesn’t matter what you read, as long as you read,” says
Louisdhon-Louinis. “They read on certain topics, and we hire performers,
storytellers, dancers, clowns and magicians.”
Reading Ready
The Reading Ready Early Literacy Program is designed to promote and
improve literacy among young children from birth to age 5. As a result, when
these children begin their formal schooling they are ready to learn how to
read. The library also offers a number of educational and culturally enriching
programs for children ages 5 to 8, including renowned author appearances
and story times; music and dance; arts and crafts; family and bedtime story
times; and read-aloud programs. The library’s website offers tips for parents,
including how to use finger plays and songs to build pre-literacy. It also
offers electronic resources and websites where parents can play educational
games with their children that merge computers and books to stimulate
children’s imaginations.
Team with Teachers
Ask your child’s teacher for the summer reading list — it will vary by
school and grade.Visit the library with your children and try to find as many
books as possible on the list. If you need to, enlist the aid of a librarian.
“Parents should become familiar with the expectations for the child’s grade
level and select library books based on the various content areas,” says Dr.
Marisel Elias-Miranda, administrative director of Miami-Dade County Public
Schools Office of Early Childhood Programs. “Parents should take [their] children to the public library and encourage them to participate in the library’s
activities for their age group.”
Electronic Resources
Online, the library also offers TumbleBookLibrary, an interactive reading
software that includes classic picture books. Children can read or listen along
as they view the online books. SmartyGames.com is another program offering free, educational games that help kids with math and reading. “Through
interaction on the computer, children have a good literary experience,”
Louisdhon-Louinis says. Books for pre-teens and teens are also available. At
mdpls.org, parents can find the best books for young adults, as well as staff
picks. Manga graphic novels, very popular with teens, can be accessed via the
TumbleBook software.
Avoiding the
Summer
Slide
By Millie Acebal Rousseau
Playground slides and
summer go hand-in-hand,
but the term “summer
slide” actually refers to
the loss of skills learned
in school when children
are on summer break.
A
ccording to the National Summer
Learning Association, all kids, regardless of
their income levels, lose an average of a month
of skills during the summer. When it comes to
math, they may lose about two months. Lowincome students may lose up to three months
of skills in reading achievement. “The gap builds
over time,” says Kate Shatzkin, director of marketing and communications at the National
Summer Learning Association. “By fifth grade,
[students] are more than two years behind in
their reading.” Research also suggests a correlation with dropping out of high school.
The good news is that there are ways to
help your child prevent the summer slide.
First, make sure kids read during the summer,
Shatzkin suggests. If they are too young to read
on their own, read to them. If they are older, ask
them questions about what they’re reading.
Before school lets out, request a teacher conference and ask what will be the important skills
at the beginning of the next grade level. Ask the
teacher to recommend websites and other useful resources to practice those skills.
Julie Hardy, a middle school math teacher
at Devon Aire K-8 Center, recommends that
parents look up math programs online so kids
can keep their skills sharp. Many sites charge a
minimal fee for one to two months of access.
She also says that Miami-Dade County Public
Schools (M-DCPS) offers virtual programs in the
summer through which students can take classes
online. The programs are accessed through the
student portal, but you must first sign up with
your child’s counselor.
Another useful resource is the M-DCPS
Parent Academy, accessed via dadeschools.net by
clicking on the Parents tab. Here, you’ll find familylearning events, summer reading lists and links to
free educational websites, such as College Bound,
which helps with summer learning. M-DCPS also
offers summer tutoring.
Research shows that parents who spend
more time talking and reading to their children
can improve academic outcomes, even when
they are limited by socioeconomic status,
says David Reitman, Ph.D., associate professor and director of the ADHD Assessment,

Southeastern University.
Parents should search for summer programs
that provide high-quality experiences, such as
those funded by The Children’s Trust. “One of
the best things kids can do is to become involved in summer programs and other activities
that require that they read, write and continue
to practice other skills that are needed to
perform well in the classroom and in life,” says
Reitman, also the director of Project RISE at the
university’s Center for Psychological Studies.
Interested parents are encouraged to call and
ask about the activities, and to volunteer if possible. Reitman says parents who are involved in
their children’s activities are better prepared to
provide opportunities on weekends and evenings that expand on the lessons they learned.
Remember, children learn best when the
skills have meaning for them and can be associated to real life situations. “Children must be able
to understand how the skills learned will be able
to help them in their daily life,” says Dr. Marisel
Elias-Miranda, administrative director of M-DCPS
Office of Early Childhood Programs.
Learning Made Fun
You don’t have to spend money to keep your
child learning during the summer. Visit the library,
museums and other cultural organizations on
free family days, and find other creative, low-cost
activities you can do at home. Some examples:
• Do fractions by cooking together and
doubling recipes.
• Practice addition and subtraction at the
grocery store by comparison shopping.
• Plan a virtual family vacation and have kids research how much gas is required to get there and other budget considerations; also, have them research the destination’s history, culture and geography.
• Figure out perimeter and space, and plant
a garden.
• Build critical and analytical skills by watching a play or show together and asking your child to explain what they saw; or read a book to
gether and discuss the meaning of the story and how it relates to their life.

por The Children’s Trust.
Building Educated Leaders for Life (BELL)

siempre deben estar atentos a cuándo llegan
Meriendas y comidas saludables y
abundante agua y bebidas (bajas en azúcar, no
carbonatadas) podrán evitar que los niños se
debiliten.

pediatría y psicología a nivel universitario. “En
segundo lugar, no se debe forzar a ningún
niño a divertirse. Si usted sabe que su hijo
de veras disfruta alguna actividad, anímelo y
asegúrese de que tenga la oportunidad de
practicarla con frecuencia”.
Gorski señala que lo más importante es
conocer el temperamento del niño. A algunos
amigo. Muchos niños aceptan con facilidad situaciones y retos nuevos y se adaptan a ellos;
Learning & Play (CL&P, Aprendizaje y Juego

físicas y deportes no tradicionales, tales
como campo y pista, gimnasia, natación, tenis,
bowling, ping-pong, patinaje sobre ruedas,
sobre patineta, skateboarding y hasta yoga. El
Departamento de Parques y Recreación de
Hialeah, como otros municipios, organizan
actividades infantiles durante todo el año,
incluso programas no relacionados con los
deportes.
United Martial Arts Academy.
verdaderamente infeliz realizando esa actividad.

Fit Kids of America
“A algunos niños
les gusta el baloncesto, pero les mostramos
otras disciplinas.
ejercicios. Los niños tienen acceso a un buen
número de actividades físicas, entre ellas
racquetbol, ping-pong, kickboxing cardiovascular, aeróbicos, baloncesto, volibol, fútbol,
softball, fútbol flag, hip-hop y entrenamiento
de fuerza. Fit Kids of America también cuenta

A continuación aparecen
National Summer Learning Association.
David Reitman, profesor adjunto y director
de ADHD Assessment, Consultation and
Treatment Program (Programa de Tratamiento,
Consulta y Evaluación del ADHD, siglas en
inglés del Trastorno por Déficit de Atención
con Hiperactividad) de Nova Southeastern
University.

Marisel Elías-Miranda,
directora administrativa de Office of Early

a, ki pi gen fantezi, epi ki melanje
entèaktivite, amizman, ak aktivite ki fè timoun
lan fè pwogrè.
Pi bon kote pou w jwenn pwogram pou
plizyè chwa ou ka jwenn nan pwogram The
Children’s Trust finanse yo. Kan bon kalite yo
ofri yon anviwonnman san danje ki ankouraje pitit ou a, ki veye pou kapasite l nan
lekti, ak pwogrè akademik li prezève oubyen
vin pi bon.
Kan ete yo ofri yon opòtinite san parèy
pou chanje eksperyans pitit ou a nan aprann,
Building Educated Leaders for Life (BELL)
sanble lekòl òdinè, ki devlope kapasite akademik an menm tan li bay timoun lan konfyans nan tèt li.”
Kòm timoun yo travay nan ti gwoup
maten yo pou lekti, ekriti, ak matematik, epi
aktivite nan apremidi yo sèvi pou anrichisman – devlope lidèchip, fè travay atis, mizik,
dram, syans, konpozisyon literè, lang etranjè,
epi lòt aktivite ankò.
Menm si BELL poko fè patnè nan MiamiDade, aktivite aprantisaj nan Sezon Ete li
yo, ki sèvi pou ankouraje entèaktivite, patisipasyon, ak mouvman, pran modèl sou kan ete
Children’s Trust yo.
Pran yon moman pandan semenn anvan
lekòl fèmen yo, pou chèche konnen chwa ou
genyen pou kan ete, kidonk kote yo ye, ak
ofri yon mwayen ideyal pou pitit ou a teste
yon domèn enterè, oubyen pou li espesyalize
nan yon talan.
Pran konsèy nan men
pitit yo nan pwogram konsa. Rele kan ki ka
enterese w yo si w gen nenpòt kesyon, epi
dwe montre karakteristik fanmi y ap sèvi yo.
Anplwaye yo dwe aji byen youn ak lòt, epi yo
dwe montre aklè yo vle ankouraje tandans natirèl timoun lan pou inovasyon ak kiryozite l.
Tout kan yo dwe satisfè direktiv akseptab
pou sipèvizyon yo. Gwo kan yo ka resevwa
plizyè santèn timoun, men pwopòsyon rezonnab pèsonnèl ki la pou travay ak timoun yo
ap fè w konnen pitit ou a pral fè yon eksperyans anrichisan ak pozitif. Pou timoun ki ant laj
6 ak 10 an, dwe genyen omwen 1 moun majè
pou chak 10 timoun. Pou timoun ki depase laj
11 an, kapab genyen 1 moun majè pou chak
15 timoun. Sèlman, lè timoun yo toupre yon
dlo, yo dwe genyen plis sipèvizyon.
Gade enstalasyon ki nan kan an. Èske kote
a san danje, èske li byen klere, epi li ase gran
pou timoun yo alèz nan aktivite y ap fè? Èske
gen ase espas deyò? Ase lonbraj?
k ap genyen nan lakou kote timoun yo jwe,
ak sipèvizyon pou jwèt fizik yo. Èske y ap
pèmèt yo fè aktivite nan dlo? Chèche konnen si pèsonnèl sipèvizyon an konn fè CPR
(Reyanimasyon kadyopilmonè), epi si monitè
natasyon yo sètifye.
Si pitit ou a gen yon andikap, fè kan an
a fè aktivite avèk lòt timoun ki gen andikap
tou, ak si l ap posib pou w antre an relasyon
avèk lòt fanmi. Li enpòtan tou pou aktivite ak
règleman yo koresponn avèk bezwen espesyal pitit ou a genyen.
Sekirite fèt pou li pi gwo priyorite nan nenpòt
pwogram. Pèsonnèl sant lan dwe toujou veye lè
timoun yo rive nan kan an, lè yo prale lakay yo,
a santi feblès. Mande ki lè yo sèvi manje ak bweson, ak kisa yo sèvi timoun yo.
Pou jwenn “pi bon” kan pou fanmi w, koumanse chèche depi nan bonnè, epi reflechi
sou bidjè w, sou kote ou rete a, ak sou enterè
timoun lan. Chèche espesyalman yon kan
ki gen plis “P-L-E-Z-I” nan aprantisaj, pou
anpeche edikasyon pitit ou a “glise desann”
pandan Sezon Ete sa a.

Fit Kids of America. “Gen timoun ki renmen
baskètbòl, men nou mete yo an kontak avèk
tout lòt disiplin yo. Nou vle pèmèt yo jwenn
yon asnal ki gen diferan [aktivite], pou lè yo
pi gran, yo kapab vle di ‘Mwen nan baskètbòl,
men mwen sonje mwen renmen jwe foutbòl,
oswa mache sou tapi woulan.’ Ou dwe fè li
enteresan pou yo.”
Pwogram lan pran yon apwòch miltidisiplinè
pou egzèsis, kote li entegre espò ann ekip
avèk klas kilti fizik. Timoun yo jwenn yon tralye
aktivite fizik, tankou rakètbòl, Ping-Pong, bòks
kadyovaskilè avèk men ak pye, aewobik, baskètbòl, volebòl, foutbòl, sòfbòl, jwèt drapo, dans
hip-hop, ak egzèsis pou fòs. Fit for Kids America
ofri tou yon jimnaz modèn ki gen tout kalite
ekipman, tankou tapi woulan, mach eskalye
mekanik, bisiklèt, ak aparèy eliptik. Pou plis enfòmasyon, gade nan adrès fitkidsclub.com.
Ki Kantite ki se Twòp?
Paran yo konn eseye ale twò lwen, lè yo fè presyon pou yon timoun patisipe nan yon aktivite oswa yon espò. Gorski bay kèk konsèy pou veye kouman oumenm ak pitit ou a ap aji.
Peter A. Gorski, M.P.A., chèf sèvis sante
ak devlopman timoun nan The Children’s
Trust; li se yon pedyat pou devlopman ak
konpòtman tou, ki fè klas sou sante piblik,
swen pedyatrik ak sikyatri nan nivo inivèsitè.
“Epitou, ou pa bezwen fòse yon timoun pou
l jwe”, dapre sa Gorski di. “Si w konnen aktivite pitit ou renmen anpil, ankouraje li [yo]
epi ede li [yo] rive fè aktivite a regilyèman.”
motive lè yo pran yon angajman sosyal, epi yo
gen tandans pou yo patisipe nan yon aktivite
lè yo avèk yon zanmi. Gen anpil timoun ki
kòlte kareman avèk nouvo sikonstans oubyen
nouvo defi, epi yo rive adapte, men gen lòt ki
bezwen yon ti ankourajman anplis. “Timoun
yo ap fè w konnen lè yo nan yon aktivite ki
enterese yo.”
Kidonk, kouman pou yon paran chwazi
aktivite ki koresponn avèk tanperaman pitit li?
Gorski konseye bay timoun yo chans patisipe
nan plizyè kalite aktivite, epi kite yo chwazi
kisa yo pi renmen yo. Apre sa, ou ka redui
kantite aktivite yo. Epitou, eseye ankouraje
pitit ou fè aktivite ou ta renmen fè avèk li,
tankou monte bisiklèt, mache, oswa jwe boul.
Jwèt Olenpik Sezon Ete a se yon bon opòtinite pou gade atlèt yo, epi pou rekonnèt ki
aktivite ki kapab enterese yon timoun.
men yo kapab danse, oswa jwe nan pyès
teyat, oswa ranpli wòl nan fim. Lagomacini
di “ Vil Hialeah a òganize tou yon pwogram
egzèsis vityèl, ki pèmèt timoun jwe avèk yon
Xbox oswa yon PlayStation, epi soti deyò pou
fè menm mouvman yo. Pou plis enfòmasyon,
gade nan adrès hialeahfl.gov.
• Si yon timoun sanble li pa renmen oubyen li pa alèz avèk yon nouvo aktivite li fenk
koumanse, gade pou w wè si se yon pwoblèm tan peraman, ki pral rezoud lè timoun lan adapte, oswa si timoun lan pa renmen sikonstans yo vre.
• Lè ou ale chèche timoun lan nan kote li patisipe nan aktivite a, mande l si li te jwenn aktivite a enteresan.
Mande timoun lan kouman li santi kò l, kouman aktivite a ap mache, epi si gen nenpòt moun k ap anbete l. Pwoblèm lan kapab pa nan aktivite a, men nan lòt timoun oswa monitè a k ap anbete timoun lan.
• Si pitit ou a montre yon nivo ennèji nòmal – oubyen menm plis ennèji – nan aktivite woutin l ap fè nan kay la, tankou nan fè devwa lekòl li, oswa lè l ap manje, lè sa a se yon bon siy ki fè w konnen pitit ou a pa gen tèt chaje.

Bibliyotèk Ou
Par Millie Acebal Rousseau
Pou Timoun yo pa Bliye sa yo
lan. Gen yon sijè yo chwazi chak ane, epi fanmi yo siyen pou yo resevwa
yon tiliv. Konsa, paran yo ka kontwole kote liv pitit yo fin li yo pase, pou fè
kominote a pou bay rekonpans pou lekti, tankou iPod, òdinatè ki konnekte
nan Entènèt, sistèm Nintendo DS avèk jwèt ladan yo, seri jwèt Baby Einstein,
ankadreman pou fè desen koulè, tablo jwèt, ak koupon kado pou Barnes &
Noble ak Toys “R” Us.
ki rakonte istwa, dansè, kloun, ak majisyen pou vin jwe pou yo.”
Aprann pandan Sezon Ete a
Par Millie Acebal Rousseau
Gliswa nan teren jwèt ak Sezon Ete mache ansanm, men
aprann lekòl, pandan yo an vakans pou Sezon Ete a.
Reading Ready (Preparasyon pou Lekti)
Pwogram Reading Ready Early Literacy (Preparasyon pou fè Lekti Bonè)
a fèt yon jan pou ankouraje ak amelyore kapasite lekti timoun ki tou piti
jiska laj 5 an. Bibliyotèk la ofri tou plizyè pwogram edikasyon ak anrichisman
kiltirèl pou timoun ki gen ant 5 ak 8 an, tankou prezantasyon moun selèb ki
ekri liv vin fè, ak rakonte istwa; genyen mizik ak danse, travay atis ak atizan,
istwa pou fanmi timoun rakonte yo anvan yo dòmi, epi pwogram pou fè
lekti pou lòt moun koute w. Nan sit Entènèt bibliyotèk la, gen konsèy pou
paran, tankou ki jan pou yo fè jès ak dwèt yo, epi chante pou pare timoun
yo pou aprann li. Sit Entènèt bibliyotèk la ofri resous elektwonnik tou, ansanm ak konneksyon sou lòt sit kote paran moun ka fè jwèt edikatif avèk
pitit yo nan òdinatè ak nan liv, pou fè imajinasyon timoun yo travay.
L
ak atelye sou ekriti, mizik, dans, louvri mikwofòn, epi bay istwa, travay atis ak
atizan, klas yota, epi menm tounwa pingpong.
pwogram pou rakonte istwa nan maten ak nan apremidi, ansanm ak travay
atis avèk atizan.Timoun yo kapab menm patisipe nan jwèt sou òdinatè, epi
travay an gwoup. Men kèk nan plizyè pwogram bibliyotèk la ofri:
Pwogram Lekti pou Sezon Ete
Pwogram lekti pou sezon ete nan bibliyotèk la mete lavi nan liv pitit
ou renmen yo, lè li fè rakonte istwa ak òganize aktivite.Timoun yo ka jwe
wòl nan istwa yo, pou yo tounen pèsonnaj yo renmen nan yon liv istwa.
Oubyen, si yo travay avèk atis yo, timoun yo ka patisipe nan travay atis ak
atizan ki pèmèt devlope kreyativite ak talan literè yo.
Pwogram lan fèt pou twa kategori laj: timoun ki fenk fèt jiska laj12 an, adolesan ant 13 ak 18 an, epi moun majè ki depase 18 an. Pwogram lan eseye
ede timoun yo kenbe ak amelyore kapasite lekti ki koresponn avèk lane
yo fenk fini an. Nou ankouraje paran yo jwe yon wòl aktif nan pwogram
D
apre Asosyasyon Nasyonnal pou
Aprann pandan Sezon Eta a (National
Summer Learning Association), tout timoun,
kèlkeswa nivo ekonomik yo, pèdi an mwayenn 1 mwa konnesans pandan Sezon Ete a.
Pou matematik, yo ka pèdi menm 2 mwa.
Timoun nan fanmi pòv yo ka pèdi jiska 3
mwa konnesans nan rannman pou lekti. “Plis
National Summer Learning Association. “Lè
yo rive nan senkyèm lane, [elèv] yo pèdi plis
pase 2 lane nan kapasite lekti yo.”
li aprann pandan Sezon Ete a. Premye mwayen an, se fè timoun lan fè lekti pandan Sezon
Ete a, dapre konsèy Shatzkin bay. Si timoun yo
twò jenn pou fè lekti poukont li, fè lekti pou
yo. Pou yon timoun ki pi gran, poze yo kesyon
sou lekti yo fè a. Anvan lekòl fèmen, mande
pwofesè a pou w vin pale avèk li, epi mande
l ki konnesans ki pral enpòtan nan koumansman lane ki pral vini apre a. Mande pwofesè a
rekòmande sit Entènèt ak lòt resous ki ka itil,
pou travay sou konnesans sa yo.
Julie Hardy, ki se yon pwofesè matematik
nan nivo entèmedyè nan Devon Aire K-8
Center, rekòmande pou paran yo gade pwogram matematik yo sou Entènèt, pou ede pitit
Lekòl Piblik Miami-Dade County a. “Paran yo dwe mennen pitit [yo] nan
bibliyotèk piblik la, epi ankouraje yo patisipe nan aktivite bibliyotèk la òganize
pou timoun laj yo.”
Resous Elektwonnik
koute, pandan y ap gade liv sou Entènèt. SmartyGames.com se yon lòt
pwogram gratis ki ofri jwèt ekdikatif pou ede timoun yo nan matematik ak nan lekti. Louisdhon-Louinis di: “Nan aktivite yo fè sou òdinatè,
timoun yo pran yon bon eksperyans nan lekti.” Gen liv tou pou timoun
ki pral antre nan adolesans ak timoun ki nan adolesans yo. Nan adrès
mdpls.org, paran yo ka jwenn pi bon liv ki genyen pou jenn moun ki
majè, ansanm ak liv pèsonnèl bibliyotèk la chwazi. Lojisyèl TumbleBokk la
pèmèt jwenn woman grafik manga, ki popilè anpil pami adolesan yo.

Te gen yon tan, yon bibliyotèk te
yon refij trankil, yon kote pou timoun
prete liv, pou yo li san fè bwi, oswa fè
rechèch, oswa fè devwa lekòl yo. Jodi

yo kenbe konnesans yo. Gen plizyè sit Entènèt
ki fè peye yon ti lajan pou aksè pandan 1 oswa
2 mwa. Li di tou, Lekòl Piblik Miami-Dade yo
(M-DCPS) ofri pwogram vityèl pandan Sezon
Ete a, kote elèv yo ka pran klas sou Entènèt.
dadeschools.net, si w klike sou etikèt pou
paran an [Parents]. Se la w ap jwenn aktivite
pou fanmi aprann, ak lis lekti pou Sezon Ete
a, ak konneksyon pou antre nan sit Entènèt
pou edikasyon, tankou College Bound, ki
ede timoun aprann pandan Sezon Ete a.
M-DCPS ofri sèvis pwofesè prive tou, pandan Sezon Ete a.
Rechèch montre lè paran yo pase plis tan
ap pale oubyen ap fè lekti pou pitit yo, sa
kapab ede timoun yo travay pi byen lekòl,
menm si yo pa nan yon fanmi ki gen lajan, dapre deklarasyon David Reitman, Ph.D., pwofesè
asosye ak direktè nan pwogram Evalyasyon,
Konsiltasyon, ak Tretman ADHD a (ADHD
Assessment, Consultation and Treatment
Program), nan Nova Southeastern University.
Paran yo dwe chèche pwogram pou sezon
ete ki gen bon kalite eksperyans, tankou pwogram The Children’s Trust finanse yo. Reitman
di “Youn nan pi bon bagay timoun yo ka fè,
se patisipe nan pwogram Sezon Ete yo ak
nan lòt aktivite kote yo gen pou yo fè lekti,
ekri, ak kontinye travay sou lòt konnesans yo
bezwen pou travay byen nan saldeklas yo ak
nan lavi.” Reitman se direktè tou nan Project
RISE nan Sant pou Etid Sikolojik (Center for
Psychological Studies) inivèsite a. Nou ankouraje paran ki enterese yo rele, pou mande ki
aktivite yo ofri, epi si posib pou yo ede kòm
volontè. Reitman di paran ki patisipe nan aktivite pitit yo gen yon pi bon preparasyon pou
ede pitit yo pandan wikenn ak nan aswè, pou
ale pi lwen pase leson yo aprann yo.

Èske ou te konnen?
h Pi bon jan pou timoun yo aprann,
se lè yo fè pratik nan jwèt ki ede
yo sonje. Lè sa posib, chèche
entegre konnesans yo nan yon jwèt.
Sonje byen, pi bon jan pou timoun yo aprann,
yo, epi yo dwe kapab konnekte konnesans yo
ak sikonstans ki konn rive tout bon nan lavi a.
“Timoun yo dwe kapab konprann kouman
konnesans yo pran yo pral kapab ede yo nan
sikonstans ki konn rive tout bon nan lavi a”,
dapre opinyon doktè Marisel Elias-Miranda, ki
se direktè administratif nan Sèvis M-DCPS pou
Pwogram Jenn Timoun yo (M-DCPS Office of
Early Childhood Programs).
Pran Plezi nan Aprann
Ou pa oblije depanse lajan pou ede pitit
ou kontinye aprann pandan Sezon Ete a. Ale
Men kèk egzanp:
• Travay sou fraksyon pandan n ap fè manje ansanm, epi double sa ki nan resèt yo.
• Travay sou adisyon ak soustraksyon nan konpare pri yo, nan kote yo vann manje.
• Fè preparasyon vityèl pou yon vakans an fanmi, epi mande timoun yo chèche
konnen ki kantite gazolin n ap bezwen pou rive nan kote a, ansanm ak lòt
konsiderasyon sou bidjè vwayaj la; fè yo gade tou istwa, kilti, ak jeyografi kote nou prale a.
• Kalkile perimèt, ak sifas, epi plante yon jaden.
• Pou aprann yon timoun devlope kapasite kritik ak kapasite analiz li, gade yon pyès teyat oubyen yon fim ansanm, epi mande timoun lan eksplike sa li wè a; oubyen li yon liv ansanm epi pale sou sa istwa a vle di, ak kisa istwa a genyen ki anrapò avèk lavi timoun lan.
