Ben / Nuestro Enfoque de la Fe con Padre Ben PRAYING IN THE NAME OF JESUS June 12, 2016 ORANDO EN EL NOMBRE DE JESÚS “Therefore, God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord, to the Glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2: 9-10). The name of Jesus Christ carries power, authority and distinction. A person’s name is her identity. Protecting or defending a good name and living up to one’s name are life long commitments. When our good names are threatened, we do all in our power to save or preserve it. People speak and act in someone’s name because that name commands authority, power and prestige. Religious Communities sometimes founded and named after their founders like the Franciscans, the Dominicans, the Jesuits, etc. Decrees were issued and oral messages sent in the name of kings or sovereigns. Jesus was the name given to Mary’s Child. It was not her choosing; rather it was given from on high. The Angel Gabriel said to Mary, “…and you shall call his name JESUS” (lk 1:31). The Hebrew form of the name is “Y’sua” which means “Yahweh is salvation” and this corresponds with the angel’s message to Joseph “you shall call his name Jesus for he will save his people from their sins (Mt 1:21). From the very beginning, this name defines our Lord’s identity. It is one of power and authority (see Mark 16:17). It was in the virtue of that name that the apostles healed and did marvelous works (Acts 3:6; 4:12 and Phil 2:9-11). In the middle ages, the most ardent promoter of the Holy Name was the Franciscan St. Bernadine of Siena. Using his devotion and oratorical skill, he convinced people to become devoted to the holy name of Jesus. After his sermons, he often displayed a tablet bearing a trigram of the savior’s name (IHS) in letters of gold. Pope St. Martin V eventually approved this devotion. This sacred trigram was inscribed in people’s door ways. In 1721, Pope Clement VII gave the Franciscans the permission to celebrate masses in honor of the Holy Name. Pope Innocent III extended this feast to the universal Church. Our present custom of bowing our heads to the Holy Name goes back to the 25th cannon of the Second Council of Lyons (1274). This Ordinary time of the year is an opportunity to call upon the name of Jesus in prayer and to make His name known to others through our works of mercy (Spiritual and corporal). It is interesting to note that when we say our rosary, we are mentioning the most holy Name of Jesus 53 times and St. Paul has reassured us that when this most powerful name is mentioned every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth (Philippians 2: 10). The name of Jesus has also a missionary dimension; it is in His name that people’s lives are transformed. St. Peter revealed that there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved except the name of Jesus (Acts 4:12). In this most delicate time in the life of the world and the Church, let us invoke this Name more insistently and with unrelenting ardor to engage the men El nombre de Jesucristo tiene poder, autoridad y distinción. ¡¡¡Que tengan una Semana Llena de Bendiciones!!! and women of our time and age bringing to them the Good News of salvation. Have a Blessed Week!!! Fr.
