Please Pray For - New Page 3
November 28, 2010—First Sunday of Advent
Views from the Pastor—Msgr. Larry Pichard
Visiones del Párroco—Mons. Larry Pichard
We are truly awed by the tremendous response to our capital campaign St. Francis Rebuilt God’s Church…And So Shall We. We
thank all the parishioners who pledged for our new Church and chapel.
Since this bulletin was prepared 10 days ago, I cannot give you a precise update on how much has been pledged. But I am going to guess
that we still need about $2 million to reach our goal of $7 million. The
way to have those pledges is to ask those who have not pledged to
please do so. Now you hold the key to construct our new Church—we
must rely upon your generosity. So, please step up to the plate and
pledge as soon as you can in December. We are on a roll, but we cannot keep rolling without you!
During Advent our 3 main personages are John the Baptist,
Mary, and Jesus. We will celebrate Mary’s Immaculate Conception on
December 8, a holyday of obligation. We also celebrate Mary’s appearance in the Americas, in Mexico, in 1531. After the Spaniards
invaded and conquered Mexico 1521-23, Spanish Franciscans were not
very successful in converting the indigenous people of Mexico. Who
would want to believe in the God whose believers inflicted such destruction upon the indigenous people? For the next 10 years only a
handful of converts were made. But in 1531 Mary appeared to the
indigenous Juan Diego and asked him to approach the bishop and
honor her request that a Church be built near Tepeyac hill. Although
the bishop was wary for several days, he was finally convinced by witnessing the living image of Mary on the cloak of Juan Diego that is
preserved to this very day. So, within the subsequent decade, 8 million native American people begged to be baptized since they could
“read” the message of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, that she
was the loving mother of Jesus and the loving mother of an oppressed
people. We will celebrate that feast the eve of December 12 and with
a novena of 9 nights before that. Each night, starting December 3, we
will celebrate Mass in Spanish at 7:00. If you happen to be passing by
either before or after Mass, you will see richly costumed dancers
called Matachines. They represent the indigenous people who literally
“danced for joy” in coming to know the love of Christ and his mother
Mary. And we all rejoice that God has so honored the Americas with
this compassionate miracle of Our Lady of Guadalupe!

Did You Know?
The sacrament of Matrimony signifies the union of Christ and
the Church. It gives spouses the grace to love each other with
the love with which Christ has loved his Church; the grace of the
sacrament thus perfects the human love of the spouses,
strengthens their indissoluble unity, and sanctifies them on the
way to eternal life...Since marriage establishes the couple in a
public state of life in the Church, it is fitting that its celebration
be public, in the framework of a liturgical celebration, before the
priest (or a witness authorized by the Church), the witnesses,
and the assembly of the faithful. - Catechism of the Catholic
Church
