Page 3 Our Site with Fr. Ben / Nuestro Enfoque de la Fe con Padre Ben July 31, 2016 “If Today You Hear His Voice, harden not your hearts”
"Si Oyen Hoy Su Voz, No Endurezcan Sus Corazones"
One of the most difficult things in life is to listen intently to the voice of God
over the heated rhetoric that seems to consume every minute of our day,
particularly as we enter into the sometimes partisan discussions that follow
political conventions, protests over senseless violence, even the competitions
of the Olympics. It can become tempting to simply want to isolate ourselves
and pretend that somehow God is not calling us to be a Catholic Christian
voice in the political life of this nation.
Yet in Evangelii Guadium Pope Francis reminds us “…
redemption has a social dimension…the Holy Spirit is at work
in everyone…penetrating every human situation and all social
bonds…[bringing] forth in our lives and actions a primary and
fundamental response: to desire, seek, and protect the good of
others.” (178) and in Forming Consciences for Faithful
Citizenship (FC) the bishops of the United States state that we
share a (1) “…tradition of religious freedom and political
participation…face serious challenges that are both political
and moral…and as Catholics we are called to participate in
public life in a manner consistent with the mission of our
Lord. Pope Francis teaches an authentic faith involves a deep
desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave this
earth somehow better than we found it…the Church, ‘cannot and must not
remain on the sidelines in the fight for justice.’ (EG, 183) “
justicia.' (EG, 183)."
This political reality offers us the opportunity and the challenge to help shape
a reality in which the fundamental principles upon which this nation was
founded, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, are insured to all. We are
challenged to be a voice of life: especially for the unborn, the terminally ill,
the elderly, the most vulnerable in our society; to be peace makers in a nation
at war; to oppose violence in all its manifestation, even the death penalty: to
pledge a pursuit of ‘liberty and justice for all’: working against the divisions
so often caused by race, ethnicity, economic inequality; the challenges of
immigration reform; the many who live in poverty, lack healthcare and the
basic necessities of life: and to remember that we are part of a global
community: building a safer, more peaceful world; being good stewards of
the environment; living in solidarity. (FC, 2) Therefore the bishops state that
“…responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation is a moral
obligation…as far as possible citizens should take an active part in public
life” (FC, 13). The Church will not indorse individuals but rather seeks to
help form individual consciences so that Catholics can make personal choices
from a properly formed conscience, recognizing that participation goes well
beyond casting a vote in a particular election. (FC, 7)
(FC, 7)
So what is a good Catholic citizen to do? First and foremost they need to
participate to the level possible, if eligible they need to register to vote and
exercise that privilege at every opportunity. Secondly they should listen to
authoritative resources, not partisan rhetoric, but statements and analysis
which come from the USCCB, the California Conference of Catholic
Bishops, or the Bishop’s Office. They need to determine to what extend a
candidate stands for a ‘consistent ethic of life’; rightly understood this is a
fundamental respect for the dignity of every person and does not reduce
Catholic social teaching to only one or two issues; critically analyzing
campaign rhetoric for its support of the dignity of the human person
(opposing abortion, euthanasia, human cloning, capital punishment, war,
torture, racism, human trafficking, violence); subsidiarity (showing concern
for the economic, social, cultural, educational, professional expressions
which make social growth possible); the common good (the social and
community dimension of the moral good; food, shelter, education,
employment, health care, housing, etc.), solidarity (one human family
regardless of national, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences;
welcoming the stranger ensuring opportunities for safe homes, education for
children, a chance for a decent life; be peacemakers).
Listening to the voice of God allows us to make political choices based upon
moral principles, the needs of the weak rather than benefits of the strong,
pursuit of the common good rather than the demands of narrow interest (FC,
61). Read Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, check the Faithful
Citizen page at the Diocesan website (www.sbdiocese.org), join the
California Legislative Network (www.cacatholic.org), participate in the
political process on Election Day and every day with “…a well-formed
conscience aided by prudence.” (FC, 31)
May you always be open to the voice of God calling the greatest good out of
you.
Dcn. Ed
Necesitan
determinar hasta qué grado un candidato apoya una 'ética de vida consistente';
persona y no reduce la enseñanza social católica a sólo una o dos cuestiones;
(www.sbdiocese.org), únase a California Legislative Network
