St. Agnes
(d. 258?)
Almost nothing is known of this saint except that she was very young—12 or 13—
when she was martyred in the last half of
the third century. Various modes of death
have been suggested—beheading, burning,
strangling.
Legend has it that Agnes was a beautiful
girl whom many young men wanted to
marry. Among those she refused, one reported her to the authorities for being a Christian. She was arrested and confined to
a house of prostitution. The legend continues that a man who
looked upon her lustfully lost his sight and had it restored by
her prayer. Agnes was condemned, executed and buried near
Rome in a catacomb that eventually was named after her. The
daughter of Constantine built a basilica in her honor.
Comment: Like that of modern Maria Goretti (July 6), the
martyrdom of a virginal young girl made a deep impression on a
society enslaved to a materialistic outlook. Like Agatha, who
died in similar circumstances, Agnes is a symbol that holiness
does not depend on length of years, experience or human effort. It is a gift God offers to all.
Quote: "This is a virgin's birthday; let us follow the example of
her chastity. It is a martyr's birthday; let us offer sacrifices; it is
the birthday of holy Agnes: let men be filled with wonder, little
ones with hope, married women with awe, and the unmarried
with emulation. It seems to me that this child, holy beyond her
years and courageous beyond human nature, receives thename
of Agnes [Greek: pure] not as an earthly designation but as a
revelation from God of what she was to be" (from Saint Ambrose's discourse on virginity).

News From The Streets…
Love Conquers All

To able to go out, pray and deliver over 100 gifts to the
homeless living on the streets is the most incredible feeling and
an honor to do. Provided by affluent friends who hosted a
Christmas party, guests were invited and asked to bring a
wrapped clothing item for the homeless. Giving is loving.
Some give, some help deliver. It all counts as loving. It’s as simple as that. Faith, hope and love but the greater of these is
love. I Cor. 13:13 This same chapter in 1 Cor. also states,
You can have faith to move mountains, and even pray in
tongues like angels, but if you have not love, you have nothing.
1 Cor. 13:1-2. Now, let’s stop there, and really pay attention
to God’s Word. Once again, it is plain and simple. We are to
love people, especially those who have faced rejection and are
hurting and broken. There are many examples of Jesus
choosing love over the law. How about the blind beggar in
Luke 18:35-43? The man was on the side of the road begging
(know anyone like that?) then as Jesus was passing by with his
disciples he begins to scream out Jesus, Son of David, have
mercy on me, help me! How does Jesus respond? You know
the story. Jesus restored his sight immediately. This blind
beggar mattered to Jesus. And one of my all-time favorite
parables told by Jesus is about Lazarus the poor beggar and
the rich ruler. Lazarus received bad things with dogs licking his
sores while the rich ruler received good things during his lifetime. But it would be Lazarus who would be carried up by the
angels and not the rich ruler. John 4:1-42. So next time the
opportunity arises for us to judge someone for begging … remember the heart of compassion our Savior carried for hurting people, and try to reach out to them with love because the
greatest of these is love.

Juan 2, 1-11 En Caná de Galilea Jesús comenzó sus signos
Tres días después se celebraba una boda en Caná de Galilea y
estaba allí la madre de Jesús. Fue invitado también a la boda
Jesús con sus discípulos. Y, como faltara vino, porque se había
acabado el vino de la boda, le dice a Jesús su madre: “No tienen
vino.” Jesús le responde: “¿Qué tengo yo contigo, mujer? Todavía no ha llegado mi hora.” Dice su madre a los sirvientes:
“Haced lo que él os diga.” Había allí seis tinajas de piedra,
puestas para las purificaciones de los judíos, de dos o tres medidas cada una. Les dice Jesús: “Llenad las tinajas de agua.” Y las
llenaron hasta arriba. “Sacadlo ahora, les dice, y llevadlo al
maestresala.” Ellos lo llevaron. Cuando el maestresala probó el
agua convertida en vino, como ignoraba de dónde era (los sirvientes, los que habían sacado el agua, sí que lo sabían), llama
el maestresala al novio y le dice: “Todos sirven primero el vino
bueno y cuando ya están bebidos, el inferior. Pero tú has guardado el vino bueno hasta ahora.” Así, en Caná de Galilea, dio
Jesús comienzo a sus señales. Y manifestó su gloria, y creyeron
en él sus discípulos.
Reflexión.- Hoy vamos a reflexionar sobre el hecho de que María nos conduce a Jesús. Es una confirmación de la de la expresión tradicional y conocida: “Por María a Jesús” ¿María le hace
competencia a Cristo? Si queremos entrar en este tema, tenemos
que responder primero a algunos temores, algunas críticas frente a la piedad mariana: Muchos temen que María aparte de Cristo, le haga “competencia”, se coloque como “pantalla” entre
Dios y nosotros. En el origen de ese temor suelen encontrarse
experiencias negativas, provocadas por prácticas desviadas de
piedad Mariana, o también enfoques falsos sobre la persona de
María. Pero tales temores no corresponden a la realidad querida
por Dios y proclamada por la Iglesia en su vida y en su doctrina.
Haced lo que Él os diga. Escuchemos una palabra de Juan Pablo
II sobre ello: “María estuvo de verdad unida a Jesús. No se han
conservado en el Evangelio muchas palabras suyas; pero las
que han quedado nos llevan de nuevo a su Hijo y a su palabra.
En Caná de Galilea se dirigió a los sirvientes con estas palabras:
“Hagan lo que él os diga”.
Este mismo mensaje sigue diciéndonos hoy.” “Haced lo que El
os diga” son las últimas palabras de la Virgen conservadas en el
Evangelio. Son, por eso, como el testamento de Ella. Y más que
a los sirvientes de la boda, son palabras dirigidas a los hombres
de todos los tiempos. Contienen todo el anhelo, la vivencia y la
misión de María: conducirnos a la identificación con Cristo.
María está en el centro. Sabemos todos: María no es el centro
de nuestra fe, no es la razón verdadera de nuestra confianza, no
es el último fin de nuestro amor – sino Jesucristo y con Él, el
Dios Trino. Pero sentimos que Ella forma parte de los misterios
centrales de nuestra fe. María. Sin ser el centro, está en el cen-
tro. Sentimos que María, por su posición única en la historia
general de la salvación, también tiene una posición peculiar en
nuestra historia personal de salvación.
El camino normal. Podemos decir, por eso, que María es para
nosotros el camino normal hacia Jesucristo. Ya los Padres de la
Iglesia dijeron: El camino por el que Cristo llegó al hombre,
debe ser también el camino por el que nosotros lleguemos a
Cristo. Y Cristo vino a nosotros por medio de la Virgen. Cuando, por eso, le damos a María un lugar privilegiado en nuestros
corazones, y nos confiamos a su educación, entonces estamos
en el camino hacia su Hijo, entonces Ella nos conduce hacia
Cristo y el Dios Trino.
El camino más fácil, más corto, más seguro. María no sólo es el
camino normal hacia Cristo. Ella es, según una palabra del Papa
San Pio décimo, también el camino más fácil, más corto, más
seguro hacia Cristo. La devoción Mariana es uno de los grandes
dones de Dios a nuestros pueblos: lo demuestra el gran entusiasmo con el cual se ha recibido la imagen de la Virgen en
todos los lugares. Y si amamos tanto a la Virgen, estamos
amando ya a Cristo. Porque esta es una de las leyes misteriosas
del amor. El verdadero amor implica e incluye el amor a todo y
a todos los que ama el ser querido. Por eso, el amor a María se
prolonga y se convierte – tarde o temprano – en amor a Cristo.
El camino más fecundo. María es también y por último, el camino más fecundo hacia Cristo. El mismo Papa San Pio décimo
nos dice una palabra hermosa: “La Sma. Virgen nos regala un
conocimiento vital de Cristo.” Es el carisma de María, carisma
femenino y maternal: acercar vitalmente a las personas de la
Trinidad, regalarnos familiaridad con el mundo sobrenatural,
hacer de la Iglesia un hogar, del hombre un hermano. Este carisma explica la fuerza y el arraigo de la devoción mariana en
nuestros pueblos.
Ejemplo de los grandes Santos. Los grandes Santos de todos los
siglos afirman y prueban con su vida la verdad y la importancia
de este camino clásico POR MARÍA A JESUS. Han sido casi
sin excepción hombres y mujeres con una gran devoción Mariana. Muchos de ellos hasta se han consagrado a la Virgen y la
Virgen, sin falta, los ha conducido a su hijo hacia la cumbre de
la santidad. Conclusión.
Queridos hermanos, María es la tierra de encuentro con Cristo.
Todo el amor que le reglamos a la Sma. Virgen, Ella lo lleva
hacia el Señor. Y así nuestro amor encuentra, por medio de María, el camino más fácil, más corto, más seguro y más fecundo
hacia Jesucristo y Dios.
¡Qué así sea! En el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu
Santo. Amén.
