Ben / Nuestro Enfoque de la Fe con Padre Ben What is Holy Hour, Eucharistic Adoration? (I) (Simple Practices for a Renewed Eucharistic Spirituality) Beloved brothers and sisters and fellow disciples of Jesus, I wish to accompany you in your daily life of prayer and works of charity by providing our Sacred Heart Family with simple reflections that could facilitate a greater desire to spend an hour with the Lord if not on a daily basis but at least once a week. In the course of our invitation for Eucharistic adoration every Thursday 6:30pm to 7:30pm, people are still asking with childlike inquisitiveness, “What is Holy Hour?”, Why the invitation to be in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament for an hour?”, “Is Holy Hour in the Bible?” “Who should go for Holy Hour?,” “Why should we celebrate Holy Hour on Thursdays and not on any other day of the Week?”, “What are the spiritual benefits of this Hour with the Lord?”, “Can Holy Hour help us to grow in the spiritual life?” “What is the relationship between Holy Hour and the socially accepted “happy hour?”, Is there any connection between Holy Hour and other hours and moments of our lives and activities?”, “What is the relationship between spending one hour with the Lord and doing works of charity to the many brothers and sisters of Jesus in the different spaces of our ministerial life as we serve the poor, visit the sick, clothe the naked and provide for prisoners?” These questions are very important and they reveal our desire to know God and to fall in love with the Lord and his Church. Every authentic spiritual journey begins with a question. In the Hebrew Scriptures, (Old Testament), and in the New Testament, many men and women of God asked questions as they begin their journey with the Lord. Some examples are: When the angel of the Lord invited Gideon to lead the people of God, to reassure Gideon of God’s protection, the angel said, “The Lord is with you, you mighty warrior.” Gideon retorted, “My Lord, if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us?” “Where are his wondrous deeds about which our ancestors told us about God?” And in the case of our Blessed Mother Mary, at the mystery of the Annunciation, the Angel Gabriel told her that she will conceive a son, who she should name Jesus, (something great will happen in her life), she timidly asked: “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” (Luke 1:34). The young man who came to Jesus and asked, “Lord what can I do to inherit the kingdom of heaven?” (Matthew 19: 16). And the first batch of the apostles asked Jesus, “Master where do you live? “ (John 1: 38). Peter, as the head of the Apostles later asked Jesus, “To whom shall we go, you have the message of eternal life” (John 6: 68). At the conversion of St. Paul, he humbly inquired, “Whom are you Lord that I am persecuting?” (Acts 9: 5). In the Church’s hagiographical life and spirituality, many saints began their walk with Jesus by asking a question or making a positive affirmation to follow the Lord. Some asked: “Lord what do you want me to do for you? How can I become the person you created me to be?” In these questions, we locate the simple life of the holy man of Assisi, (St. Francis), and the meritorious life of a sinner who became a saint in the spirit-filled and intellectual life of St. Thomas Merton. St. Augustine welcomed Jesus in his life when he prayerfully affirmed: “My soul is restless until it rest in the Lord”. One of our contemporary lay evangelist, Matthew Kelly, has invited you and I to appreciate the universal call to holiness by prayerfully asking ourselves, “How can I be the best version of myself?” A Simple Practice For the Week As you come to Holy Hour this week and in your personal life of prayer, I sincerely invite you to take your questions to our dear Jesus, to make present before the Lord your preoccupations and doubts as Thomas did in John’s Gospel (John 20: 25). And I ask you to kindly and quietly listen to Jesus as St. Thomas did and then you will surely proclaim Jesus as “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28). Have a Blessed week!!! Fr. Please pray for the eternal rest of those who lost their lives in this tragedy and for the consolation and healing of their loved ones and also those injured in the attack. We place our pain before God and we unite our suffering with the Lord Jesus who shed his blood for us on the cross. For those of us in San Bernardino this is especially painful because we also experienced the trauma of an act of public violence in our community not so long ago, at the Inland Regional Center. In that sense, we offer our prayers and our tears in solidarity with the victims of this attack, their loved ones, the Diocese of Orlando and the City, itself. Because of the circumstances of this attack, we also make clear our condemnation of discriminatory violence against those who are gay and lesbian, and we offer our prayers to that community. We believe in the dignity and worth of every human life and we decry every attack on that dignity that happens in acts of hatred and violence. As we discern our response to this attack as Catholics, let us resolve ourselves to be an unrelenting voice for peace and non-violence in every realm of our society. The evil that is present in these events demands nothing less from us. En Cristo, Reverendísimo Gerald R. Barnes Page 11 Gratitude Page June 19, 2016 Rite of Investiture Rito de Investitura Last Sunday, Sacred Heart Parish witnessed the Rite of Investiture and Commissioning of fourteen young candidates to the Ministry of Altar Servers. With the blessing of their parents, the community is grateful to these new altar servers for responding to God’s invitation to serve at His Altar. They undertook trainings and received talks on human and spiritual formation, together with their parents, for almost two months before being installed as altar servers. We are also grateful to the old altar servers who renewed their commitment vocally before the congregation in last Sunday’s Holy Mass. May God grant us vocations for religious life and priesthood from our altar servers in the near future!
