Stretching Exercises
For Any Summer Activity!
As the grass turns green and flowers begin to bloom, many weekend warriors will
be increasing their activity levels this summer doing yard work, golfing, biking, running
and much more. While it’s great to spend more time outside, these activities may also
come with their share of new aches and pains that have been absent all winter. In order
to avoid these ailments, it’s important to prepare your body for these activities just as you
would for any physical competition. Here are a list of activities that are beneficial for you
to perform before and after any outdoor exercise to prevent injuries.
A gentle warm up increases blood
flow to the muscles and prepares
them for physical activity. This can
be as easy as a simple 5 minute
walk.
Stretching the back of your legs is vital
in avoiding hamstring strains. Many
outdoor activities require postural
positions that can stress the back and
cause knee pain, so it is important
they are stretched properly.
As a continuation of the hamstring
stretch, the calf is another muscle
that can become tight with exercise.
Stretching the calf lengthens its
muscles and avoids injuries like
plantar fasciitis & achilles tendonitis.
Summer Stretching Exercises
For Any Activity!
Performing a gentle rotation exercise
can be a great way to stretch the back
after a workout or time in the garden.
Many outdoor sports and activities
require a slight bend in posture,
leaning forward or lifting. Performing
this exercise can help balance your
back from such prolonged positions.
This move helps stretch and
strengthen the torso, shoulder, and
abdominal muscles (ones that are
often neglected!) which tend to
tighten up during activity.
As you resume your outdoor activities, it’s important to ease
into golfing, yard work, running, and biking routines. Start with
short periods of exercise and gradually increase your duration
while taking frequent breaks. This allows your body to rest and
recover to avoid any prolonged static positions. Your body will
thank you and you’ll be able to enjoy all that the wonderful
weather can offer—pain free. If any aches
and pains do arise, however, be sure to
contact an Excel Physical Therapist.

These wrist exercises are a great way to
stretch the front and back of the forearms
before and after yardwork, biking & golfing.
Tips to maintain your fitness
goals in 2016
GET MOVING
CLEAR YOUR MIND/
-Already have a gym membership? Perfect!
Start using it if it's been awhile.
REDUCE STRESS
-Make a goal! You don't have to sign up for
a race. Set a reasonable goal (trips to the
gym per week, weight loss amount, etc.).
-Start small: go for a walk during a break at
work, take the stairs more, play with the
kids.
-Grab a friend: you may
be more inclined to keep
your fitness goals if you
have someone else to
motivate you/keep you
in check.
-Centers for Disease Prevention and Control
recommendation:
Adults need at least:
2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate
intensity aerobic activity every week
and
Muscle-strengthening activities on 2
or more days a week that work all
major muscle groups
-Step away from the desk.
Take time to leave the office
or eat lunch somewhere
other than your work space.
-Plan an activity each week.
Set aside a movie night at home with the
family, coffee or cards with friends or
something you enjoy doing to get your mind
off of work, school, etc.
-Get plenty of sleep. Have a set routine with
kids or for yourself to unwind for the night.
-Talk with a friend, family member, or
professional if you are having a difficult
time managing your stress.
-Visit http://www.apa.org/helpcenter/
stress.aspx for an interesting read on the
connection between stress and overall
health from the American Psychological
Association.

MAKE HEALTHY FOOD
CHOICES
RID THOSE ACHES &
PAINS
-Grab a few more fruits & vegetables at the
store for snacks during the day.
Injury/pain stopping you from achieving
your fitness goals or feeling well?
-Minimize the sugar. Freeze your extra
holiday cookies/treats, only grabbing one
every now & then instead of every day.
-Talk to your doctor: they may need to do
some testing to figure out what is going on.
They may also send you to physical therapy.
-Prepare ahead of time. Plan out your
lunches or dinners over the weekend. You
can even precook a few items to save time
at night the rest of the week.
-Talk to a physical therapist: call or visit one
of our locations to see if we may be able to
help you. Many insurances now do not
require a prescription from the doctor.
-Drink more water to keep you hydrated,
reduce overeating and replace high sugar
drinks.

“I've had severe back issues and several surgeries. I've been to multiple
physical therapists, but never have I felt so comfortable with my quality
of care. I've seen Marta and Angela and they are spectacular. They do not
treat me as a patient but as a person and a friend. They explain details
regarding my care and always go the extra mile to help. The front desk staff
are phenomenal, personable, caring and understanding of my needs. I would
definitely suggest this facility if you are looking for wonderful care and expert
advise!” -Amy B, 94th & L clinic patient
