St. Patrick RC Church - Saint Patrick`s Roman Catholic Church
St. Patrick R.C. Church 280 East Main Street, Smithtown, New York 11787 “Christ with us. Christ before us. Christ behind us.” November 1, 2015—All Saints Day Well-earned Honors Pumpkins, Fall Sports and a Hockey Fundraiser Pictured are: (1) The front lawn of St. Patrick School served as a pumpkin patch on Wednesday, October 21st allowing students to go pumpkin picking. (2) St. Patrick’s/Village of the Branch Soccer is in full swing. (3) Our deck hockey coaches played against each other last Sunday to raise funds for a family struggling with cancer and job losses. If you went through Pre-Cana in our parish, you likely know Carol and Ron Tavis, the recipients of the St. Agnes Medal, an annual award given to one person or couple from each parish in our diocese who unselfishly give of their time to their parish. The award ceremony took place at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre last Sunday. Eight more St. Patrick parishioners were also honored with catechetical service awards in a ceremony also held at St. Agnes Cathedral on Tuesday, October 20th. Read more inside. When Pope John Paul II came to American in 1979, I was privileged to be at Shea Stadium where he made an appearance. I am still in the process of reading his biography by George Weigel, Witness to Hope. Pope John Paul II was a learned and zealous contributor to many of the documents of Vatican II when he was a bishop. Once he became Pope he wrote many letters and visited many countries. His gift of intelligence combined with his strong faith enabled him to see the Church, the world, and all the people in the world through the eyes of faith. When Communist governments fell, his concern was that the new found freedom would be used as a means to a just and moral society, not freedom that focused on limited, individual whims and desires. How blessed we have been to have seen him canonized a saint in our lifetime. Surely he is an inspiration to all of us who seek to live our faith as the people of God, the Church, the Body of Christ in the world. The stained glass window on the east side of the lobby in the main entrance in our church building depicts John Paul II. Today we celebrate All Saints Day, a day when we remember those who have been Catholic believers before us and are now role models and intercessors in God’s presence for us. The saint most of us pray to everyday is Mary, the mother of Jesus. As He was dying on the cross, John 19:26-27 tells us, “When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son!’ Then He said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother!’ From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.” We express our faith in Mary’s Motherhood for us every time we say a Hail Mary or pray the rosary. Through the mysteries of the rosary we turn our attention to Mary’s faith and the saving events in the life of Jesus that took away everything that separates us from God and one another. The Blessed Virgin Mary, as Jesus, is an exemplar of faith and trust in God at all times, the good and the bad, the joyful and the sorrowful, the difficult and the easy. From having to reveal to Joseph and her family that she was pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit, to seeing her newborn child pursued by Herod’s murderous soldiers, to being present at Jesus’ crucifixion, we see her complete trust in God and His way. Her response to the angel Gabriel at the Annunciation, Luke 1:38: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word,” is a preview to the words of Jesus in the Garden just before He is arrested (Matthew 26:39): “He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, ‘My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will.’” You and I are called to be saints. We will probably not be officially canonized by the Church, but we are invited to be one with all God’s people in heaven. Everyday we repeat the words of Jesus and Mary as we pray the Our Father and say, “thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” That prayer is answered by us who pray it. We do the will of God every time our thoughts, words, and actions give life to ourselves and others. Today’s Gospel is the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount in chapters 5-7 in Matthew’ Gospel, where Jesus gives us the eight Beatitudes. The Jewish people formulated 613 laws after Moses received the Ten Commandments. From that point on in the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy we see these laws stated. These laws covered many different situations the Jewish people of that time faced. But as we know as human beings, we never have every situation covered. The unexpected happens and in those cases where laws or rules are not promulgated or come to mind, we have the treasure of the Beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount. What Jesus is sharing with us is the vision of faith that comes from spending time in prayer, reading the Bible and other spiritual books, and being fed by Word and Sacrament at Mass. Blessed are the poor in spirit. We are all born needing love. Our presence makes the spirit of our parents rich as they lovingly give and sacrifice of themselves for us. We enrich ourselves and others when our true purpose is to love without counting the cost and to forgive no matter how great the hurt. Blessed are they who mourn. We mourn not only the death of those we love, but the evil that causes pain and suffering to us, our loved ones, and all people. This mourning leads to action to overcome evil. Blessed are the meek. To be meek is not to be a pushover or a wallflower, but to love and do good simply to make the lives of others better. This attitude is far more satisfying than looking for recognition and gratitude. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness. The struggle against injustice and evil can seem overwhelming at times. But our efforts are never in vain. All we have to do is keep the attitude of Jesus on the cross in mind. Blessed are the merciful, they will be shown mercy. “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” God’s mercy is pure, healing, and renews both the forgiver and the forgiven. Blessed are the pure of heart. That means we always do the right thing for the right reason. Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called children of God. This is not peace at any cost or compromise, but peace based on concern for God’s truth and love. Blessed are those persecuted for holiness’ sake. How courageous and life giving it is to stand up for who we are as God’s children in the face of ridicule, misunderstanding, dismissal, and rejection. It is God’s love and presence that leads, sustains, and guides us all on the road to sainthood. Congratulations to our 2015 St. Agnes Medal Recipients: Carol and Ron Tavis! There are those parishioners who go out of their way in serving God and others in their parishes and who do it year after year. That is certainly the case with Ron and Carol Tavis, the 2015 St. Agnes Medal recipients from our parish. Each year, pastors from the 133 parishes in our diocese are asked to nominate lay people who unselfishly donate their time and talent. Bishop William Murphy created the award in 2007, stating that: “Honorees are lay people whose love of the Church has been shown through the devotion to the Holy Father, to our diocese and to their parish. They are the unsung heroes in our midst who build up our parish communities by extraordinary service in parish ministry, parish administration or some significant volunteer role.” Ron and Carol have played an active role in our parish in several capacities, perhaps most notably as coordinators of our Pre-Cana Ministry for the past 17 years. Carol is also a member and past president of Holy Mother Mary Columbiettes and Ron is an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Carol also served as a catechist in our Religious Formation program for 17 years and both she and Ron have served as Eucharistic Ministers. . . . .also receiving awards. . . Eight other St. Patrick parishioners also recently received Catechetical Service Awards for their work in religious formation. Receiving the John R. McGann Award were: Grace Kurkowski (for 40 years of service), and Virginia Schmidt and Maria Lee (for 35 years of service). Receiving the Pope Pius X Award for ten years of service were: Virginia Riccardi, Marie McLaughlin, Patricia Galietta, Jennifer Crimmins and Diane Sarrocco. (Pictured at right is Grace Kurkowski receiving her award.) We are a People of Prayer Please continue to say the following prayers each day as we seek God’s guidance, strength and courage Gracious God, we are your people embraced by your love. We thank you for your presence with us throughout all time. Create us anew. Liberate us from that which keeps us from you. Enable us to recreate our world and restore justice. Heal us from every form of sin and violence. Transform us to live your Word more profoundly. Reconcile us so enemies become friends. Awaken us to the sacred; nurture our relationships; enliven our parishes; reunite our families. Fill us with joy to celebrate the fullness of life. Empower us to be a community of love growing in your likeness. Amen. Thank you Father for the gift of life. Thank you for the gift of your Son, Jesus. May my gratitude inspire and sustain me in doing everything I can to respect the lives of all people and to do all in my power to end abortion and everything else that harms, abuses, or threatens human life. Give me the courage and strength to live in your image each day. Amen. Lord, the plight of our brothers and sisters is deep and the suffering of Christians is severe and frightening. Therefore, we ask you Lord to spare their lives to grant them patience and courage to continue their witness of Christian values with trust and hope. Lord, peace is the foundation of life; Grant us the peace and stability that will enable us to live with each other without fear and anxiety, and with dignity and joy. Glory be to you forever. The symbol to the right (the Arabic letter “N” for Nazarene) is being used to mark Christians in Iraq for persecution. Saints and Martyrs: "St.Thomas More and St. John Fisher, (are) martyrs who laid down their lives rather than violate their consciences or their sacred principles. Their courageous witness of faith continues to stir the minds and hearts of people yearning for authentic freedom, and specifically, for religious freedom." Archbishop William Lori homily, 6/22/12 "We surely are not facing (in America) the dire brutality that confronted St. John Fisher. But our Church and her institutions do find themselves today in perilous waters." The total number of Christians martyred in the early church is unknown. It is known that persecution occurred through stoning, crucifixion, burning at the stake or other forms of torture. The period before Constantine (3rd century) was the "Age of the Martyrs.” (religionfacts.com/ persecution; wikipedia.org) Today we are seeing another "Age of the Martyrs" as tens of thousands of Christians are violently killed every year. Saints and Martyrs Today: Religious persecution of Christians is rampant worldwide where followers of Jesus are the targets of religious cleansing. Pope Francis has repeatedly decried the persecution and begged the world for help, but it has had little impact. "Western leaders ... will be remembered for their near silence as this human rights tragedy unfolds", said author Kirsten Powers. (usatoday.com, 4/21/15) Recent Headlines: *Indonesian churches destroyed; *Persecution in Pakistan; * Egypt: Coptic Churches attacked; *Kidnapped Nigerian girls still alive, forced to convert, raped; *Eastern India pastor shot dead to 'terrorize Christians'. (christianitytoday.com, 10/21/15) O Lord, The plight and suffering of the Christians is heavy and frightening. In the course of his teaching Jesus said to the crowds, "Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation." He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood." Focus Questions: 1.Share the story of someone whose trust in God made all the difference in his/her life. What impact has that person’s life had on you? 2. Lengthy prayers did not impress Jesus. Talk about your prayer life. How do you try to keep it meaningful? 3. Describe a time in your life when you believed that God was calling you to give from your want, not from your excess. Children and Family Reflections: Talk about a special gift that you received. What made it so special? They then drop the cards in the collection basket on Sunday as their contribution to our parish. Below are a few reflections on our gospel reading by our second graders. Gospel Reading: Mark 10: 46-52 Children and Family Reflection: Jesus granted the blind man’s request to give him sight. If you could ask Jesus for something important, what would it be? • To cure all the people with sickness.—Ryan • I would ask Jesus to make my cousin Hannah’s back feel better.—Elena • To always keep my family safe.—Matthew • I would ask Jesus to make my Aunt Adela feel better since her mom went to heaven.—Liliana • I would ask Jesus to help people who don’t have food. I don’t want anyone to be hungry.—Kaitlyn • I would ask Jesus to help people who are sick. I want everyone to be healthy.—Madison • I would ask Jesus to help those in need.—Meghan • I would ask Jesus to end wars and to have more love in the world.—Noah • I would ask Jesus to give me and my family a healthy life so we could be happy together.—Olivia • I would wish me and my whole family would live forever.—Rose • I would ask for no more food allergies.—James • I would ask Jesus for food, clothes, and education to survive, be smart and to be warm.—Maddox • Sometimes I have nightmares and I pray. It makes me brave and safe, then I fall asleep.—Milan • I will ask Jesus to help sick people and to help me to be a better person.—Anthony • I would ask Jesus to let my great grandmother walk again.—Gianni • I would ask Jesus to make everyone healthy.—Ryan • If I could ask Jesus for something important, it would be to see my poppy and my cat Mittens again. They are in heaven and I really miss them.—Madison • I would ask Jesus to make all of the sick people feel better.—Juliana • I would ask Jesus to keep my family heathy.—Andrew • For my family to stay healthy forever.—Tyler • I would ask Jesus to give the poor a home to live in.—Julianna • If I asked Jesus for something important, it will be for my grandmas not being sick.—Antonio • If I could ask for something back I would ask for my Nanny and my cat Tigger.—Juliette • If I could ask Jesus for something important it would be to have our own house in Smithtown. This will make all of us happy. I can now invite my friends over for a playdate. Thank you Jesus.—Regina • I would ask Jesus to fix my Pop Pop’s leg because he hurt it when he fell.—Thomas • I would ask Jesus for everyone to get along and for everyone to be happy.—Caroline • I would ask Jesus to protect my family and friends.—Justin • I would ask Jesus for everyone to love each other.—Sean • I would pray to Jesus to help Uncle Scott get really better.—Logan • I would ask to let me be a princess and have lots of crystals.—Payton • If I could ask Jesus for something important, I would ask him for help becoming a great dancer.—Lauren Talk about different ways you help in your home. • I clean my toys when I don’t want to to help my mom so she does not have to, help my brother and dad, and help any thing if someone needs help.—Anna In the Neighborhood . . . .
