TRUE BLINDNESS
Bartimaeus caused a stir. Normally he sat by the side of
the road being a “good blind beggar.” But one day Jesus
passed nearby. Bartimaeus jumped up and called out to
Jesus. We can imagine him turning toward the direction
of the commotion and noise. Bartimaeus probably had
his arms outstretched as he shouted out to the son of
David.
The people who knew him were embarrassed by his
outburst. They tried to hush him up and get him to sit
back down by the roadside. Their actions spoke
volumes: “Bartimaeus, you’re not fit for Jesus.” But it
was okay for them and other “sighted” people to follow
Jesus. In today’s readings, we learn that true blindness is
not a condition of our eyes but of our hearts.

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know
for certain where it will end. Or do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following
your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does
in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do
anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road
though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost
and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to
face my perils alone.

NOTES FROM JEAN FITZGERALD………….
Recently, I participated in the Diocesan workshop: Amazing Grace, Bridging the Racial Divide. The
workshop focused on Jesus’ prayer “that all may be one.” Participants and presenters dialogued on dozens
of topics related to education, health, faith sharing, parish collaboration and violence. Represented were
parishes and groups from throughout the Diocese of Cleveland.
I learned much from the words and experiences of presenters and participants. Here are the highlights.
Sr. Rita Mary Harwood, substituting for Bishop Richard Lennon, commented that “Amazing Grace gives us the power
to bridge whatever separates us.” She quoted Pope Francis: “Jesus sent his disciples to all nations. He didn’t talk
about who is worthy of receiving/sharing his message and who is not. Embrace life as it is, not as you think it should
be. Go out to proclaim the embrace of the Father to those who have given up. Proclaim the Good News.”
Fr. Clarence Williams, CPPS, offered a keynote to remember. He commented on the need to talk about race, saying
that in the United States, if we are to build a bridge, we need to practice “Do Rules.” Do talk, do feel and do trust, to
become sober to cultural dysfunction.
We need to be the Church we are called to be. When we do this work we reflect on John, Chap. 17:22, when Jesus
prayed, “Father, make them one as we are one.” When we build bridges, we answer Jesus’ prayer that we all may be
one. This is the core of the Gospel.
Finally, Fr. Bob Marva, OFM Cap., pastor of St. Agnes/Our Lady of Fatima parish, commented that to cross the
racial and cultural divide, foundation work is not easy. Much gets in the way. One must dig through debris and
challenges to find bedrock. Bedrock is unseen and essential. The bedrock is that we are made in the image and
likeness of God, rooted in Genesis.
All lives matter. The perception of the truth that all lives matter is not universally held. Those disenfranchised seek
to be heard. Black, Asian, Latino, non-white lives matter. They matter to God. He made us little less than angels. It
must also matter in our lives. This is the heart of being human.
Our common dignity calls us to build support in several ways.
1. Educate for success in class and life in all sectors.
2. Provide that quality food is available.
3. Reform the penal system.
4. Provide the economic opportunity and access needed for living wage jobs to cover rent, utilities,
food and clothing.
Having a divide that separates is no longer an escape. We need to get to know people of other races and cultures and
call them friends. Let conversations begin and friendships blossom so that someday, we “all may be one.”

month, the group will meet at a restaurant suggested
by the group at 6:30 p.m.

NATIVITY DISPLAY
Thanks to all of you that have helped our parish
make this display so special. Any Nativity Set that
you would like to share with our parishioners and
visitors during the Christmas Season can again be
displayed in the baptistery. This will be the sixth
year this Saint Anselm tradition has been enjoyed.
If you are bringing in an item that has already been
displayed or if you have a new edition this year,
remember all are enjoyed and are welcome.
All sets or figures need to be loaned to us by
Monday, November 23. Please remember that we
cannot be responsible for the items. Bring the
objects you would like displayed in a box that has a
name and phone number on it. We will begin
putting part of each set out at Thanksgiving,
followed by more of the set during the weeks of
Advent, so the entire grouping is out by Christmas.
They will be shown throughout the Christmas
Season which ends on the Feast of The Baptism of
the Lord, January 10, 2016. On that day all items
will be boxed and ready for you to pick up. Call
