Read between the lines describing the radiant city, and we find that the greatest beauty revealed is the beauty of perfect symmetry and order, a city founded on the faith of the twelve tribes of Israel and the Twelve Apostles, lit only by the glory of God. The first reading and the Gospel are linked to this idealized description of the New Jerusalem. In both we read of distress and disturbance countered by the gift of peace. “My peace I give to you,” Jesus assures his disciples at the Last Supper (John 14:27). In keeping with that gift, the apostles and elders, in the reading from Acts, decide not to disturb the peace of new Gentile believers. The undue burden of circumcision will not be imposed on them. This week I want to mention other things that I think are important. The first is reverence. Since we are receiving the Lord Himself, we should approach with at least two kinds of reverence. The first is spiritual and internal. The second, external. First, we should be spiritually prepared. We should be without serious sin. We should be trying to avoid serious sin in our life and if we have committed serious sin, we should be confessing it. I am always amazed that people who miss Mass most weeks feel free to receive Communion without benefit of confession. That certainly is not the teaching of the Church. Weekly attendance at Mass is the norm for Catholics. Part of the internal preparation too is prayer and stopping to realize just what we are doing. We are receiving the Lord. Externals include things like bowing before receiving the Eucharist, saying “Amen” to the person who presents the Eucharist to you and stepping aside to put the host in your mouth within sight of the minister of Holy when receiving Communion. I don’t even think there is any reason for it in church. I think we should pay a little attention to our appearance. I know dress is more casual these days but there is a difference between casual and underwear. My point is simply this, I believe the Eucharist is the greatest gift we receive. We should treat it as such. NOTES FROM SISTER NOEL MARRA, OSU We are in May! Amazing! Living in a four season region allows us to meet anew each season for itself. Yes, we may have a preference but in reality each season provides a way of seeing God’s love unfolding. I think Spring is the one I look forward to the most each year. This season helps us celebrate Resurrection through its beauty and re-awakening. The buds on the trees are signs of transformation. They do catch our eye if we are not preoccupied with other concerns that may drag us down. The winter doldrums hopefully are behind us. For me this season brings with it the celebration of sacraments, Confirmation, First Communion, Marriage and Holy Orders. Imagine! I am not the only one who sees Spring as the festive season. Having just experienced our Jesus Day Retreat with the second graders and parent volunteers, I can say community and enjoyment add to our experience as believers. We are meant to do and learn with others. The excitement of the children as they worked on their banners, made bread, enjoyed a video on prayer kid style and toured the Church. Here we are in the second weekend of First Communions. It is wonderful to see the many ways families come together to celebrate Jesus coming. Hopefully these gatherings bring us back to our own First Communion. We recall our excitement and wonder of Jesus coming to us as bread to nourish us and make us His own. We need to pray to regain (if needed) that sense of wonder of our God who is forever communicating His love for us. That communication that may come through the beauty of nature, the deep relationships with those we love, the joy of family and community and especially in Jesus coming to us so intimately each time we celebrate Eucharist. WE ARE INDEED BLESSED On Saturday, April 16, parishioners from St. Anselm went on a pilgrimage to St. John's . We entered through The Holy Door, celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and were taken on a tour of our beautiful cathedral, where we were able to ask questions of the tour guide. We then attended the 12:00 Mass. For many of us, it was the first time we had ever gone on a tour of the cathedral, even though we had been to Mass there many times. At Mass the celebrant thanked us for our presence and prayed for Father Sweany and all of the parishioners of St. Anselm. Coincidentally, with the feast of St. Anselm being April 21st, there was a wonderful article in the cathedral bulletin highlighting our patron saint. After the tour, we went to Al's Deli where we talked about the day and enjoyed more fellowship over lunch. It was a lovely day, long to be remembered, one more gift from God and a special way to celebrate this wonderful Year of Mercy. We are indeed blessed.
