Program History
How does it work?
Our Services Are Free
In 1989, the Florida Legislature
ordered a task force to be formed to
report on crime and the elderly. A
crime prevention and assistance
program coordinated by volunteers
and designed with Florida’s senior
population in mind, was developed.
If you feel you have been the victim of a
scam or unfair business deal, call our
office for an appointment. You will be
asked to bring all documentation (i.e.
receipts, work orders, checks, contracts,
etc.) to our office where we can review
your case.
The primary goal of Seniors vs. Crime is
to reduce the victimization of senior
citizens who are often targeted for
specific crimes based on their age.
Dishonest people would like nothing
more than to separate you from your
money.
The program was called the “SENIORS
VS. CRIME PROJECT” and has been
successful in returning over $10 million
dollars to senior victims of crime throughout the State of Florida to date.
Because we know seniors may feel
embarrassed about being victimized,
our office uses the philosophy of
“seniors helping seniors.” In general,
cases are resolved in a short period of
time, but some can become quite
lengthy.
While there are two sides to every story,
we strive to be fair in all cases. No
problem is too large or too small. Each
case is handled on an individual basis,
and confidentiality is maintained in
accordance with the Florida Public
Records Law.
Polk Office History
Bear in mind, that not all cases will be
resolved to your satisfaction. There
may be circumstances that prevent us
from coming to an amenable solution,
but we strive for a compromise
whenever possible.
If you feel you have been taken
advantage of, someone has cheated you
out of money or has not delivered what
they promised, there is something you
can do. Contact the Seniors vs. Crime
Office for assistance.
Any cases involving a criminal offense
are turned over to law enforcement.
If you would like to have a speaker from
Seniors vs. Crime or the Sheriff’s Office
Crime Prevention Section attend a
meeting at your neighborhood, civic club,
church, etc., you may contact us at:

On March 5, 2004, Florida’s then Attorney
General, Charlie Crist, joined with the
Polk County Sheriff’s Office in opening
the first Polk County office of the “Seniors
vs. Crime Project”, in Lakeland.
We have learned a lot since that time,
thanks to the guidance and support of our
Sheriff, Grady Judd.
Seniors vs. Crime has enjoyed great
success since 2004 and has been
instrumental in the recovery of over
$600,000 for senior victims of crime in
Polk County.
