Bethany Hill School A N N U A L R E P O RT 2 0 1 3 0 2 C E L E B R AT I N G years as a living and learning community of neighbors A Thank you For two decades, Bethany Hill has been enriched and sustained by the talent and commitment of its many volunteers. We are grateful for your service and kindness, and proudly note the ripple effect that connection has on our community. The former residents presented in this report offer wonderful examples of this culture of ‘paying it forward.’ 0 2 C E L E B R AT I N G years as a living and learning community of neighbors Dear Friends, 2012-2013 Board of Trustees Donna L. Hale Chair William G. Leary Vice Chair Susan M. Juliani Secretary/Clerk Gregory J. Aceto Sheila Babine Marylou Cassidy, CSJ Betty Cawley, CSJ Margaret Comfrey, CSJ Donna Curtin, CSJ Brenda Forry, CSJ Donna Gallo Joan Patricia Lonergan, CSJ Barbara Loud. CSJ Marianne McLaughlin Susan G. Niden Sean P. O’Beirne Karin Semizoglou M. Cristina J. Squeff Ashley Walter Mary Rita Weschler We are proud of and at the same time humbled by our residents, past and present. In this 20th Anniversary Report, we highlight six former residents who exemplify the ripple effect BHS has had in the MetroWest community. It is their stories that sustain and inspire us as we begin our next 20-year chapter. Everyone loves a good story—especially one with a happy ending. For twenty years, Bethany Hill School has been the setting for many such stories. Residents whose opening chapters once included homelessness, addiction, violence, and loss have turned desperate tales to happy endings with the compassionate and supportive assistance of Bethany Hill School. Our team helps residents take active roles in writing their next chapters. This unique approach to affordable housing and education gives residents authentic prospects for a better life. As members of a learning community, they begin to change their lives. Through hard work and with their neighbors support, our residents find that their stories can have triumphant conclusions: “She earned her GED.” “He got clean.” “She became a homeowner.” Over the past two decades, countless residents have taken positive steps in their own adventure stories. And as we’ve watched them change, we have changed too. We’ve taught our residents, but we’ve learned from them as well. Time and again they have chosen paths to help or care for others. Their choices are remarkable, but not surprising. After the real opportunities BHS afforded them, our residents have been eager to offer care and support for others. In the strides they’ve made and the paths they’ve followed, they demonstrate the true meanings of determination, grit, and love. These narratives would not exist without the vision of social justice articulated by the Sisters of Saint Joseph and without the generous support of you — our partners, donors, volunteers, and Board members. Your investment in this living and learning community has yielded an incredible return on investment for countless people beyond our walls. As representatives of the Board and staff, we are committed to preserving Bethany Hill School as a nonsectarian model of antipoverty programming and community support. We extend our deepest thanks to all who have joined us in helping to set 20 years of residents on the path to happy endings. And we encourage you to help us build sustaining stories for the next 20 as well. Donna L. Hale Chair, Board of Trustees Trish Appert Executive Director 1 I have never found a place like it, or any of the people and I don’t think I ever will. It was my refuge from the outside world growing up. In my somewhat unstable life I found my childhood at Bethany Hill School. I have so many memories of my family, friends, and my mother that I will never forget. I am forever in debt to Bethany Hill School, the place that built me. M olly was 5 years old when she and her mom came to Bethany Hill School. Helping to care for her mother whose health was failing inspired Molly’s decision to become a nurse. Her mother persevered and was able to see her graduate high school and begin taking college courses before she died. Molly recently graduated from Regis College with her RN and is taking her state exams. She hopes to work in a neonatal intensive care unit. 2 | B E T H A N Y H I L L S C H O O L C E L E B R AT I N G 2 0 Y E A R S ◆ 2 0 1 3 3 T Programs he success of the Bethany Hill School model is our dual focus on work skills as well as foundational and life skills. Our goal is to enable residents to attain greater self-sufficiency and independence within the context of each individual’s ability. We require involvement in education and/or training as a condition of residency. Our small staff offers meaningful in-house programming and support to enable residents to meet this requirement. W Volunteers e rely on over 74 dedicated individuals to provide 1:1 academic tutoring, tax preparation assistance, computer instruction and assistance, food and special donations during holidays, gardening materials and howto support, dance instruction, babysitters, spring cleaning, tickets to sporting and special events and help in countless other ways. »» Workshops on life skills, financial literacy, wellness and job preparation »» The Parent Cafe - a forum for parenting support & education »» Individual college & career counseling »» Tutoring on GED, ESOL & basic skills »» Scholarship program »» Computer instruction and open access in on-site computer lab »» Community garden »» Youth programs (Summer Camp, Read to Daisy the Dog, Awesome Kids Club, 1:1 tutoring) »» Social and recreational activities that build community »» New Beginnings (case management & advocacy for HIV/AIDS) »» Scattered Site Homelessness Prevention Program Addisalem Agegnhu Pat Andrews, CSJ Gabbi Aragon Walter Bachelder Kesha Bertrand Bill Blake Leche Brown Pam Brown Saisha Brown Tracy Caprini Susan Case Betsy Conway, CSJ Cecilia Corbett Daisy the Dog Pierina DeJesus Mike DePaolo Sherry Doane Tom Driscoll Charlene Favreau, CSJ Pauline Fillman Larry Fitzpatrick Sara Flaherty Sue Foley Christine Gentile Jareliz Gomez Karen Greenberger Walt Horner Zita Fleming, CSJ Malikkah Gamble Catherine Ginty, CSJ Donna Greatorex Jess Greatorex Michael Kelly Jackson School Mary Kulas Ann Marie Lawless, CSJ Olivia Martinez Kathleen McCarthy Tim McLaughlin Cheryl Melody Marlene Mendez Debbie & John Merrill Melissa Mitchell Ross Mitchell Colleen Moynihan-Kilgore Diane Neumyer, CSJ Sara Niden Susan Niden Helen Noonan, CSJ Karen Nunez Tatiana Nunez Mary Theresa O’Reilly, CSJ The Palmer Family Pilly Perez John Mary Quirk, CSJ Mary Jo Quirk, CSJ Leon Rahaim Regis College Students Jennifer Richards Matt Shelley Peter Sibson Diane Stelfox Kathleen Sullivan Cathy St. Germaine Michelle Tavener Rosemary Treacy VISTA Program of Regis College Antonia Volcy Walnut Park Montessori School Jacqueline Williams Alan Winn ◆ ◆ ◆ The mission... The mission of Bethany Hill School, a living and learning community of neighbors sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston, is to provide affordable, independent housing with educational opportunities within a climate of respect, inclusion and acceptance. Residents are empowered to progress toward their goals and to be their best selves in a safe, supportive environment. 4 | B E T H A N Y H I L L S C H O O L C E L E B R AT I N G 2 0 Y E A R S ◆ 2 0 1 3 In Bethany Hill School, if you want to better yourself, you can do it. If you work hard, you can make it. I’m always happy when people give me an opportunity to “do.” C oming from war-torn Sierra Leone, Fatmata had simple things she wanted to accomplish: learning to drive, getting her permit, using a computer. Those led to finding a job and getting her citizenship. Wanting to improve her English lead to a writing exercise about her life. That exercise became a book of Fatmata’s journey. She is thrilled to be reunited with her sons, to whom she stresses the importance of education. 5 P art of the New Beginnings program, Reinaldo was a real communitybuilder when he lived at Bethany Hill. He took advantage of each opportunity and worked hard to get his life back. Today, Reinaldo lives and works in Framingham and returns to Bethany Hill School regularly to garden, tend the grill at our cookouts, and be a supportive presence to other residents. I found myself. I got my family back. I found a new way of life. I found hope. I found these people who care about someone like me, living with HIV. It [Bethany Hill School] is a beautiful place to be. 6 | B E T H A N Y H I L L S C H O O L C E L E B R AT I N G 2 0 Y E A R S ◆ 2 0 1 3 ethany Hill was a nurturing place of growth, a B realization of dreams for my family P auline moved to Bethany Hill when her kids were young. She focused on their education first, and then her own. Putting herself through school was hard, but she ultimately got her BA in Social Work. Today she is the program manager of a home for eight developmentally disabled men. Her oldest, Nicholas, earned his own BA degree in May and is working in Sales/Marketing. 7 BHS is a unique community where educational opportunities, emotional and spiritual mentoring are provided for people from all walks of life who are in need of a helping hand to become productive members of society. BHS allows people to focus and work on their dreams until something extraordinary happens clearly through God’s hands. BHS is a place where “Miracles” happen! V icki is employed in a management position in the biotech industry and leads her church’s 12 Step Christian program. While at Bethany Hill, Vicki focused on her own recovery and became an early leader and model for others. She taught other residents how to use the computers in our lab and launched the Pulse newsletter with her neighbors. Even after leaving Bethany Hill, Vicki would return to teach computer classes for our residents. 8 | B E T H A N Y H I L L S C H O O L C E L E B R AT I N G 2 0 Y E A R S ◆ 2 0 1 3 9 Although I had already come a long way in my recovery and transition to the community from my former life, I faced significant challenges. The pressures of career, housing and depression weighed heavily. At BHS I found peace, encouragement and the time I needed to set goals, confront challenges and discover new strength and faith to go forward. T oday, Mark is a licensed addictions counselor and loves his work helping others towards recovery and personal growth. He is also married to his ‘best friend in the world’, and is pursuing his dream of postgraduate studies to serve in ministry and teaching. 10 | B E T H A N Y H I L L S C H O O L C E L E B R AT I N G 2 0 Y E A R S ◆ 2 0 1 3 Fiscal Year 2013 Donors Bethany Hill School gratefully acknowledges the following individuals, corporations and foundations, who have so generously made contributions to Bethany Hill School during the 2012/2013 fiscal year. $50,000 and above Town of Framingham HOME Program $25,000 - $49,999 Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston $10,000 to $24,999 Anonymous Donna L.
