2012 Annual Report - Bethany Hill Place
The Strength of Our Dreams Bethany Hill School | Annual Report 2012 The mission of Bethany Hill School, a living and learning community of neighbors sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston, is to provide affordable, independent housing with educational opportunities within a climate of respect, inclusion and acceptance. Residents are empowered to progress toward their goals in a safe, supportive environment. Dear Friends, 2011-2012 Board of Trustees Donna L. Hale Chair William G. Leary Vice Chair Maureen Doherty, CSJ Treasurer Susan M. Juliani Secretary/Clerk Gregory J. Aceto Sheila Babine Betty Cawley, CSJ Margaret Comfrey, CSJ Brenda Forry, CSJ Donna Gallo Andrew Koslow Joan Patricia Lonergan, CSJ Barbara Loud. CSJ Marianne McLaughlin Susan G. Niden Sean P. O’Beirne Peggy Rooney, CSJ Karin Semizoglou M. Cristina J. Squeff Mary Rita Weschler Dreams can be immensely powerful. This summer, we watched Olympic champions bring home “Gold” when they dared to dream and faced down their challenges. But you don’t have to go to the Olympics to witness the power of dreams. You can see champions facing their challenges and striving for gold every day at Bethany Hill School in Framingham. Homelessness, unemployment, addiction, and trauma are daily challenges for members of our community. Residents at Bethany Hill School have found a home where they can live, learn, and dream to be their very best selves. Sometimes dreams unfold quietly – like when a resident marks a milestone in his sobriety or obtains her GED. Other dreams yield broader celebration -- like when a child raised at Bethany Hill School graduates from college! (REGIS TODAY, Spring 2012). Dreams that are realized speak to Bethany Hill’s unique environment, where residents are embraced and encouraged by a community of neighbors, staff, board, and volunteers. Bethany Hill School is an exceptionally beloved and successful ministry of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph. One of our goals this year was to build upon that affection by increasing our visibility in the Metro West community. We made concrete and visible progress toward this objective with the award of a HOME grant from Town of Framingham. In partnership with the Congregation, these resources allowed us to repoint our building’s masonry and replace our roof. We also were delighted to host the Leadership for MetroWest Academy for a day-long panel discussion on Housing. And to keep in touch with you, we’ve started using social media, including Facebook, a blog, and an e-newsletter, so you can watch our dreams unfold. Bethany Hill School draws daily inspiration from our residents and from the Sisters of St. Joseph who “dared to dream” and created Bethany Hill School. We are proud to serve as stewards of this critical work. We look to you—our community of former residents, partners, volunteers, sponsors, donors, Board members, and Board alums—to help us add new friends and realize our dreams. Thank you for dreaming with us. Donna L. Hale Trish Appert Chair, Board of Trustees Executive Director > BHS during and after the masonry and roof work. Construction workers gave resident Richie Tarbox his own hard hat in appreciation of his keen interest in the project. ANNUAL REPORT 2012 | 1 The Dream Unfolds Every day at Bethany Hill School, dreams are quietly unfolding thanks to the hard work and perseverance of our residents and staff throughout the year. This year we hosted “Sweet Success” evenings to share these dreams with each other. As a community, we celebrated milestones in the lives of the individuals and families who call Bethany Hill their home, and recognized that while accomplishment come in all shapes and sizes, all hold meaning. Some significant accomplishments this year included the households who have rebuilt their lives after experiencing homelessness; two recent college graduates; 4 young women working toward their GEDs; 5 residents who secured jobs; and a mother of five who is helped by her children to study for the Certified Nurse Assistant exam. 2 | BETHANY HILL SCHOOL Volunteers Over 50 volunteers provide support in countless ways, including academic tutoring, tax preparation assistance, resume writing, computer instruction, childcare, gardening support, recreational activities for children, food and special holiday donations.
