our Walk to School Week!
Parent Conferences
Parent Conferences are a few weeks away. Here are some tips for a positive Parent-Teacher
Conference:
- Plan for your conference by talking with your child, write down questions and think about your
child’s strengths and learning style.
- Have both parents attend if possible
- Ask questions and clarify anything that is not clear to you.
- Share any information that might help the teacher develop a better understanding of your child.
- Decide with the teacher what needs to be done to support your child’s education.
- Be sure to talk with your child about what was discussed at the conference.
Remember, communication throughout the school year is important! Don’t wait for conference time or
let conference time be the only time you connect with your child’s teacher.
Let’s Be Responsible!
Responsibility is our character trait of the month. Learning to be responsible includes: showing respect
and compassion for others; practicing honesty; showing courage to stand up for what we believe;
developing self-control out of consideration for others. Watch for the chance to teach your child to be
responsible through everyday situations. Read stories together that teach lessons. Talk about
complicated decisions and help your child understand how the choices they make will affect them and
others.

Please remember: School begins promptly at 8:10 am!
Children arriving past this time must go to the office to get a tardy
pass -- including Friday Flag mornings. Please make every effort
to get your child to school on time. Late arrivals miss the
important instructions for the beginning of the day. We want
everyone to get off to a good start each morning!
Also please remember that we do not have supervision until 7:55.
Students must report to the cafeteria if arriving before that time.
Breakfast is served beginning at 7:45. We encourage parents to
stay with students having breakfast.
------------------------------------------------------------PLEASE make every effort to pick your child up after school on
time – especially on Friday. We have had too many instances of
children having to wait too long in the office for someone to come
to pick them up. We understand that sometimes emergencies arise
but there is no structured supervision for your child after school
hours. Please call the office at 727-9192 ext 0 if you will be late
picking up your child.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------Anytime you come to school during the day for whatever reason, please
sign in at the main office. If you need to drop something off you your child
during the school day, please drop it off to the main office. Please do not go
directly to the classroom as it causes an unnecessary disruption. Thank you
for your cooperation.

HAVE YOU MOVED, CHANGED JOBS, OR CHANGED A PHONE
NUMBER? Please let the main office know if you have moved, changed jobs, changed home phone numbers, or if the people listed as your emergency contacts have changed their phone numbers. Halloween Parade
Our Halloween parade will be held on Wednesday, October 31 beginning
at 2 pm. Just a reminder that students may NOT wear costumes to school.
Students may wear costumes during the parade as long as they are
appropriate for school. There will be no weapons, masks, full face paint,
blood or gore allowed. Students will inappropriate costumes will not be
allowed to participate in the parade. If you have any questions, please ask.
Reminder:
Thursday, October 18 is an early release day. There is no school on Friday,
October 19 due to parent/teacher conferences.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-Teacher conferences will be held Oct 18 & 19. Below is information we hope will
be helpful:
Before you go:
* Think about what you want to tell the teacher about your child
* How does your child feel about school?
* What does your child like to do after school?
* What special interests does your child have (dinosaurs, cars, arts, sports, cooking)?
* Is there anything you would like to tell the teacher that would help him/her understand
your child?
* Ask your child what you might discuss with the teacher and look at in the room. If both
parents can’t attend, ask for your spouse’s ideas.
At the Conference:
* Arrive on time
* The teacher will be prepared to tell you about your child’s schoolwork.
Here are some questions you might want to ask:
* In what subject/subjects does my child do well?
* What needs improvement?
* Are there any special programs that could help my child?
* What can I do at home to help my child?
* Ask questions about any part of the school program that you have questions about
(homework, recess, test results, etc.)
* Be aware that other parents are waiting for their conferences. Leave promptly when
your conference time ends.
When you get home:
* Tell your child something good that the teacher said about him/her.
* Jot down any important points to share with your spouse.
* Keep communicating with the teacher throughout the year by telephone and notes.
Early Release Fridays
All students are released at 12:00 every Friday. We have had many students left in the
office after 12:30 on some Fridays. Please help us by remembering to pick up your
students early on Fridays.
All students are welcome to buy lunch on Friday. Please remember that parents may
not park in the loading/unloading zone while waiting for their child to buy lunch.
Please park properly and pick up your child by 12:15.

Castro Valley Outreach is an organization of parents and educational
professionals established to assist local families who are in situations of crisis
or of temporary hardship. CV Outreach offers assistance year-round to the
Castro Valley community. Anonymity for the families is very important.
Assistance given in the past has included help with medical and dental needs,
clothing, furniture, food, plus referrals and support to a wide cross-section of
families. Any family needing assistance may contact their school principal.
Also anyone interested in volunteering time or donating to the program may
contact Mr. Ray Harris at 889-7743.

Medications
According to California Education Code 49423, students are not allowed to carry their own medication and take
as needed. All medications, including medication available without a prescription, need to have both physician
and parents’ written permission. The medication is to be dispensed by health office/school secretary. The
medication form needs to clearly state the name of the student, the name of the medication, method, the
amount, and the time it is to be dispensed. It must be in the prescription container (not a zip lock bag). Please
use the medication
form available at all school sites. It is our goal to follow safe health practices at school in compliance with the
California Education Codes to ensure optimal health for all students and staff.
If your child uses an inhaler or epi-pen at school, please be sure that the Severe Asthma Allergy Plan is on file
in the school office.

STANTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL
When the School Improvement Program (SIP) and the School-based coordinated Program (SBCP) were
established, they were envisioned as ways to increase school wide effectiveness, improve student
achievement, and over time, better prepare students to be productive workers and responsible citizens.
One of the principal tenets of these programs was that those individuals closest to the students should be
more involved in making significant decisions affecting the instructional program of the school. The
School Site Council (SSC) was selected to be the vehicle by which the school community would come
together to chart the school’s path to improvement.
The SSC is uniquely suited to carry out this function since it is representative of all segments of
the school community. Being composed of the principal, teachers, other school personnel and parents, it
provides a forum for all of the major players in the school to come together to identify common goals and
establish a plan to achieve these goals. The SSC’s success depends upon both the ability and the
willingness of all those involved in the process to work together in a cooperative manner to develop an
effective curricular and instructional program in which all students may attain higher levels of academic
competence.
As the SSC goes about allocating the supplemental resources, it should strive to keep its focus on
establishing and maintaining a comprehensive and ongoing strategy to improve curriculum and
instruction. The SSC should not limit its vision to using the supplemental resources as merely a source of
money to be used to meet the demands of the moment or to purchase a single fixed solution to be used in
perpetuity. Instead, it should establish and maintain a vision of the skills and knowledge students will
need to be competitive in a modern economy and then use the available supplemental resources, along
with the existing base resources of the school, the school, to make this vision possible for all students in
the school.
The school’s improvement effort should also be coordinated with the district’s effort to upgrade
its curriculum offerings and quality of instruction in order that both the school-through the SSC– and the
school board-the district office– become part of a single improvement effort.
Finally, as districts in California begin to experiment with new forms of site decision-making and
to rethink current governance as part of the movement in restructure their school, they should build on
what is already in place. In fact, the basic premise underlying the restructuring movement in California
and around the nation is the same as the guiding principle of school improvement; that is, that the
individuals closest to the students should be more involved in making decisions which affect the
instructional program of the school.
STANTON SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL
School Site Council (SSC) Election-Stanton School is in the process of electing members to Stanton’s
School Site Council. SSC is composed of an equal number of voting staff members and parents who serve
multi-year terms. Please be aware, however, that SSC is a public meeting and all interested staff and
parents are welcome and are invited to attend and participate. Please fill out the ballot below and send it
in to the Stanton office.
