In today’s Gospel, Jesus censures people who take the seats of honor at a feast. Take the least honorable places, he tells them, and then the host can invite you to a more honorable place. Jesus, of course, is rebuking the pride of those people who go for the honorable seats. But what is the solution to the problem of pride? If you race your friends to the least honorable seat because the reward for doing so is that you get one of the best seats, isn’t this pride too? So what is true humility? Well, think about pride. There is a childish kind of pride, of course, where you brag about your accomplishments while everybody else tries to be polite enough not to roll their eyes while you are talking. And then there is also the grown-up version of that childish pride. A multi-millionaire, for example, who explains that he is a self-made man has this kind of pride. He has failed to notice all the gifts he has been given that have helped him get where he is. He thinks he himself is responsible for the good he has. A more complicated kind of pride can be found in a person who knows that all his good comes from the grace of God. But he is sure that God has given such grace to him and not to his neighbors, because God knew that he, unlike his stupid worldly neighbors, would make good use of God’s gifts. Finally, the worst and most sophisticated kind of pride is found in the Pharisee of today’s Gospel who thanked God that he was not like other men, especially not like that sinner, the publican. The Pharisee knew that every good in him was a gift from God. But he was glad that he had God’s gifts and that the publican didn’t. The Pharisee liked looking down on the publican. Here is what humility is, then. It is recognizing that every good in yourself is a gift from God and is meant to be given back to the Lord by being shared with others. You can’t get true humility by racing for the least honorable seat. If the least honorable seat is, in the Lord’s view, the best place to be seated, then true humility requires your sharing it with others in gratitude to the Lord who gave it. Fr. Vince **************************************************************** The diocesan Office of Family Life is hosting a 12week spiritual enrichment program for adults who have experienced divorce. Based on the popular Catholic's Divorce Survival Guide, the program will begin on Tuesday, September 6, from 7:00- 9:00pm, at the Saint John Paul II Center in Mishawaka and continue every Tuesday evening through November 22. The cost of the program is $20.00, which includes a participant journal and refreshments. To register, please contact the Office of Family Life at (574) 234-0687 or email [email protected]. KANIEWSKI FUNERAL HOME, 277-4444 BECOMING A LECTOR or EXTRARDINARY MINISTER OF HOLY COMMUNION AT HOLY CROSS CHURCH Have you ever considered being a Lector or Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at Holy Cross Church? If you’re like most, the answer might have been maybe but then reflecting on your unworthiness, we decline the invitation. Well, the truth is that we are all unworthy of being ministers of the Lord if it were not for God’s grace. By the Lord’s grace we are called into the mystery of God’s interaction through Word and Sacrament. The unfathomable love God has for us, the love that God is for us, invites us to become more involved in the life of the Church and in our community. We, therefore, would like to extend an invitation to you to pray and think about becoming a Lector or Extraordinary Minister of Holy Cross. We are in need of ministers for all Masses, especially the 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday Masses. Training for both ministries is required and is offered throughout the year. Please call Kathy Dawson at the parish office for information regarding upcoming trainings. LECTORS Lectors bring life to the written Word of God. Those who proclaim God's word in the liturgy are known as Ministers of the Word or Lectors. Answering the call to become a lector enters one into a deeper relationship with God as He is revealed in sacred scripture. Lectors commit to ongoing faith formation and training activities that prepare them for the calling to the ministry. To be lector is a commitment of service. Basic Requirements & Responsiblities: Confirmed Catholic and registered member of the parish High School aged and older Feel called by the Holy Spirit to proclaim God's Word Prepare and proclaim God's Word for assigned liturgies Attend annual lector formation/training once a year EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION Extraordinary Ministers of Communion are ministers of both the bread and the cup. They are not simply distributing items to individuals, but participating in an essential moment in the mystery of faith, a moment of inviting others and self to recognize and reverence the body of Christ in its many dimensions. The role of Eucharistic Ministers seems simple enough: to minister the Body and Blood of Christ to the assembled faithful. In reality, the role of each Eucharistic Minister is to draw faith from the people of God, to become more and more like the Body and Blood of Christ. Eucharistic Ministers are called not only to minister the Body and Blood of Christ, but also to take on Christ’s likeness. The ministers accomplish this by strengthening their faith from within and sharing it with the faithful at communion. Right to Life Annual Benefit Dinner: Our parish will be reserving a table for ten at the Century Center in South Bend. The cost is $100 for each individual and will take place on Thursday, October 6 beginning at 5 p.m. with a reception and continuing with dinner from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Or, if you prefer, individuals and families may reserve a table of their own. Information about the Right to Life Ministry, the Benefit Dinner and the Guest Sign-Up list is available at the Right to Life Information Table in the church.
