The LGBT community is experiencing unprecedented social and political advances, giving us much to be grateful for and celebrate. Our festival is unique. Each year Hampton Roads Pride and our partners present a PrideFest that is at once cheerful, family-friendly, and authentic to the diverse and distinguishing characteristics of our LGBT community. I am proud of the fashion in which our community unites in a collaborative effort to produce the series of events that comprise PrideFest 2016. Visibility is a critical and necessary element to any celebration of our Pride and each year we organize ourselves to create a huge, public PrideFest that honors our cultural heritage and reminds everyone in Hampton Roads that people who identify as LGBT live here, work here, and are important members of this society. We believe our continued efforts to demonstrate Pride and the rich diversity of our community will result in improved inclusion, enhanced dignity, and more equality for all people. We are grateful for Hampton Roads Pride’s many partners and supporters whose generous contributions make these events possible, especially our presenting partners: Decorum Furniture, Newport News Shipbuilding, and WHRO Public Media. Many businesses and individuals have demonstrated their support for our region’s LGBT community by investing in Hampton Roads Pride. Please take a moment to review our extensive lists of partners and thank them for their support, especially by patronizing their businesses. One of our most effective advocacy tools is our enormous spending power; we hope you will remember to support those who support you! Our 2016 theme is “Love Unites.” Following last year’s landmark Supreme Court decision that equalized marriage across the United States, we have been united by love and fellowship. While marriage equality is a huge achievement, we have a very long way to go until we achieve full equality. Right here in Virginia, a person can lawfully be denied housing or employment on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Despite our successes, members of our community continue to experience harassment, bullying, and other forms of discrimination simply because of their identity. We must remain united in our service to equality and never rest on our victories, however monumental they might seem. On behalf of the Board of Directors and membership of Hampton Roads Pride, we want to thank you for your support. For 28 years, we’ve celebrated Pride together because we recognize the dignity and equality of all people and the importance of this endeavor to advance those values. Our Hampton Roads LGBT community is vibrant and strong; I’m excited for our bright future together. Sincerely, Michael Berlucchi President Hampton Roads Pride 7 PRIDE GUIDE 2016 HAMPTONROADSPRIDE.ORG PRIDE GUIDE 2015 OUR PRIDE IS BUILDING Newport News Shipbuilding is proud to support Hampton Roads PrideFest Visit our booth during PrideFest to win prizes and learn more about Newport News Shipbuilding! 8 HRPRIDE @HRPRIDEVA HAMPTONROADSPRIDE #HRPRIDE #PRIDEFEST PRIDE GUIDE 2016 Hampton Roads Pride to Award 2016 Scholarship to Honor Slain Bangladeshi LGBT Activist Xulhaz Mannan by Danny Epperson Hampton Roads Pride will award one of its scholarships this year to honor the life and legacy of Xulhaz Mannan. This scholarship will be awarded at PrideFest 2016 at Town Point Park on Saturday, June 18, 2016. Monday, April 25, 2016, Xulhaz Mannan and his close friend were brutally murdered in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A group of armed assailants linked to Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility. Mannan worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development and was the editor of Roopbaan, the country's only LGBT magazine, and had helped organize a rally for LGBT youths called The Rainbow Rally on April 14, the Bengali New Year. According to the Associated Press, the men were targeted because they were "pioneers of practicing and promoting homosexuality." "He was the kind of person willing to fight for what he believed in, someone ready to stand up for his own rights and the rights of others," USAID Administrator Gayle Smith said in a statement. Hampton Roads Pride president Michael Berlucchi said, "This tragic news hit us hard and we felt strongly we needed to respond with something positive in the face of this injustice, however small it might be in comparison. Hampton Roads Pride is involved in much of the same advocacy work as Mr. Mannan. It's terrifying to know that simply being an authentic person and an advocate for equality could have deadly consequences." This gruesome tragedy highlights the treacherous global landscape for LGBT people and the deadly threats faced by those who have the courage to come out in repressed societies and cultures. Much of Mannan's family lives in Virginia Beach, including his nephew, Raj Islam. Raj Islam is a Captain with Virginia Beach Emergency Medical Services and an appointed member of the City of Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission. Much like his uncle, Raj Islam is a passionate advocate for justice, equality, and human rights in his community, including LGBT equality. Raj Islam and his wife Korinne are PrideFest 2016 supporters and donors. Dr. Charles Ford, co-chairman of Hampton Roads Pride's Scholarship Committee said this action would demonstrate "solidarity with our brothers/sisters in Islamic and Asian countries where LGBT folks are being killed for being who they are. This is an appropriate recognition of a martyr in that struggle for equality before the law." 9 HAMPTONROADSPRIDE.ORG PRIDE GUIDE 2015 EXPRESS YOUR PRIDE THE REGION’S TOP EVENT RENTAL COMPANY 2661402_18167 3.8125x2.467 4C Better together Little by little we can do a lot. He has sold five million albums worldwide and garnered awards and nods from the Academy of Country Music, the Country Music Association, Billboard Magazine, and the American Music Association. Now 25, Gilman is eager to come back and share his new music and his new sound with his fans. “It took me a good while to figure out exactly who I was, musically speaking. As a little kid, sometimes I was just told what to sing. But now I have enjoyed coming into my own and discovering what it really is that I want to sing. And I think that my fans will be pleasantly surprised with what they hear.” Gilman is also mindful of the need to be patient with his career. “Music is my life, and it is always what I will be doing with my life. But I understand, given my unusual history, that the road back is not going to be short and easy. I will have to earn my way back into this business— one fan at a time. And that’s exactly how it should be.” “Say You Will” is the first solo single that Gilman has released since 2008 “Having had a lot of success in this business at a really young age was truly a blessing. But it also puts me in a unique and challenging situation as a young adult—trying to reintroduce myself to country fans now that I look and sound a lot different than I did just 7 or 8 years ago.” In 2012, Gilman made waves by recruiting 18 fellow country superstars to collaborate on a charity single called The Choice to benefit the Soles4Souls charity. Proceeds from the song, which included Keith Urban, Alan Jackson, Reba McEntire, Josh Turner, and Rodney Atkins, placed shoes on tens of thousands of barefoot children around the world. 15 HAMPTONROADSPRIDE.ORG PRIDE GUIDE 2015 VisitNorfolk is a proud sponsor of Hampton Roads Pride. But I had this cello that I started playing when I was four, and I played a lot of classical music until I was 18, so I’d be dancing in my room to ‘Genie In A Bottle’ and then I would go to orchestra rehearsal.” “I’ve always been the type of person who will tell you everything and put myself out there totally unglossed,” says Betty Who. “Writing is therapeutic in that way. I want other people to be able to hear a song and say, ‘That’s how I felt but was too afraid to say it.’ And that’s the beauty of music, you can really say anything you want with a catchy hook.” Therein lies the magic of Betty Who and her explosive rise to fame last year on the strength of her breakout debut EP, ‘The Movement.’ Her songs exorcise vulnerabilities and weaknesses, reclaiming them as anthems of joy and independence. Lead single “Somebody Loves You” debuted at #4 on Spotify’s Most Viral list, racking up more than six million streams and earning her raves from BuzzFeed and Perez Hilton to SPIN and Nylon, along with spreads in Elle (who called her “your next pop obsession”), Cosmo, and more. TIME named her one of 14 To Watch in 2014, NY Mag described her as a mix of “early Madonna…Katy Perry and Robyn, with spunk and confidence,” and Billboard hailed her “shimmering tracks…and arresting pop textures.” To call the EP an unexpected triumph would be an understatement, though, especially considering it was initially released independently. The grassroots success of the music, fueled primarily by word of mouth online from a passionate fanbase and Who’s undeniable charisma as a frontwoman in her ecstatic live shows, led to a deal with RCA, who released her follow-up EP, ‘Slow Dancing,’ which debuted at #1 on the iTunes Pop Chart. Now, as Who prepares to release her forthcoming debut LP, perform on Late Night with Seth Meyers, and join Katy Perry on tour, she finds herself a far cry away from her roots as a classical cellist growing up half a world away in Australia. “I had these dueling musical Who earned acceptance to the prestigious Interlochen Center of the Arts in Michigan, where she excelled in the rigorous classical program. On a trip to Boston during her senior year to audition for the Berklee College of Music, Who was introduced to Peter Thomas, who would become integral to her career months later when she returned to enroll in the school. “He came to me right before he withdrew from Berklee and said we should mess around in the studio and see what happens,” Who remembers. “I think from that day forward we spent almost every night at our engineer’s apartment, all crammed around the computer talking about songs and what we wanted and what we didn’t want. We did a lot of discovering who we were, and Peter became one of my best friends.” Though it was never their intention, the result of those late night sessions was ‘The Movement’ EP, and the reaction to the music confirmed that they indeed had something special on their hands. “We basically made a name for ourselves with people who were just genuine music fans,” says Who. “They wanted to see the underdog succeed because I was an independent artist.” If anything, signing with RCA has only encouraged Who to double down on those endearing qualities that made her such a rising independent star in the first place. The ‘Slow Dancing’ EP, her second collaboration with Thomas, opens with “Heartbreak Dream,” an 80?s-inspired pop masterpiece that works audiences up into a dancing frenzy live. “Alone Again” is a Prince-esque gem that poured out in just a few hours during what Who describes as a “Beyonce moment” of self-empowerment, while “Giving Me Away” is such a vulnerable, personal statement that she wasn’t sure if she could ever publicly perform it. But that’s what makes her Betty Who, that vulnerable musical alchemy by which she turns deep, emotional, sometimes painful moments into cathartic bursts of abandon and collective bliss. On the eve of completing her debut LP, one thing is abundantly clear: Betty Who still has a lot more magic up her sleeve. 17 HAMPTONROADSPRIDE.ORG PRIDE GUIDE 2015 JUNE 18, 2016 • TOWN POINT PARK FESTIVAL STAGE SPECIAL EVENTS g n o l y a d l l a schedule NOON – 1PM Grand Marshal, Mercedes Douglas CLUB PRIDEFEST STAGE PrideFest 2016 Opening National Anthem, Myra Smith PrideFest 2016 Dockside Boat Parade Grand Marshal, Mercedes Douglas Hosted by Todd Rosenlieb & Barbara Hamm Lee “Shore Groove” U.S. Army Rock Band at Fort Eustis Dance all day—bigger and better than ever before!
