Corporate Profile 2/8 Message from YBhg. Dato’ Azrene Abdullah Executive Chairman, PRIDE Foundation Breast cancer afflicts an estimated one million women worldwide each year and affects 1 in 19 women in Malaysia. Of the new cases of breast cancer reported in Malaysia, 64% were women between the ages of 40 to 60 years old. Sadly, 40% of the new cases identified each year were in the very advanced stages of the disease. Being diagnosed with breast cancer is also often frightening and confusing. Apart from having to face with unfamiliar medical terms and procedures, diagnosis, treatment; there are also questions about money, relationships, and quality of life, which can cause you further worry and stress. With that in mind, PRIDE has been conducting empowerment workshops and various other programmes to eleviate the sufferings of breast cancer patients whilst empowering the survivors. The main idea is to reassure them that “You are not alone in this journey”. Being well informed will hopefully make things easier and less intimidating for them and their loved ones. Apart from the workshops, PRIDE also conducts corporate talks and awareness seminars for the public on breast cancer and the importance of Breast Self Examination, driving home the point that “Patients do recover if detected early”. If your organisation is keen on conducting one for your staff or clients, we would be more than happy to organise it for you. Finally, we do need all the help we can get in trying to increase the level of awareness of breast cancer to the average Malaysian. If there is any way we can collaborate to bring home this important and crucial message to all levels of society, please do contact us. Thank you for your kind support to PRIDE. Together we can make a difference. DATO’ AZRENE ABDULLAH 3/8 survivors took to the runway to make a powerful statement that there is indeed, life after breast cancer. PRIDE-UMMC PALLIATIVE CARE CENTRE Palliative care is an approach which improves the quality of life for patients and their families, who are facing problems associated with life-threatening illnesses. Through the prevention and relief of suffering, palliative care aims to identify problems early, assess and treat the pain, as well as other related discomforts, be it physical, psychosocial or spiritual. At the moment, the number of in-patients with life-limiting illnesses who require specialist palliative care at UMMC exceeds 30 at any time. Of these, 85% are breast cancer patients. Since 2004, the breast surgeons at UMMC provide care within the palliative care corner in the surgical ward. Recognising the need for a specialised palliative care centre, the PRIDEUMMC Palliative Care Centre was established in September 2012 to nurture the palliative care culture within UMMC. SIRI PENJELAJAHAN KESEJAHTERAAN KELUARGA UNTUK RAKYAT (SPEKKTRA) PRIDE Foundation participated in a series of roadshows to help the poor in rural areas to receive free medical screenings and health checkups including for breast cancer.
