As per the employees working in the solar power camp, some armed Maoists suddenly appeared at the camp and put the company’s vehicles on fire, Kasma police station SHO Narottam Chandra said. They put on fire two JCB machines, two mixer machines and five tractors of the company, Chandra said No employee or any other person was injured in the incident. Though, they have not left any pamphlet demanding levy, the SHO said prima facie it seems to be the work of the Maoists. He said that police are investigating the matter besides conducting raids to nab those involved. SUB-INSPECTOR INJURED AS SUSPECTED CRIMINALS OPEN FIRE Amid the din, Mahajan said the matter was “serious” and under her consideration. “Koi na koi karvayee karenge (we will take some action),” she said, adding that 13 people had laid down their lives for the security of Parliament referring to the terror attack in December 2001. Mann is then shown entering a room where questions to be taken up inside Parliament are being sorted and seen describing the ongoing process. When the Zero Hour was taken up after the adjournment, members, mainly from the ruling NDA, demanded action against Mann with the Speaker allowing party leaders to speak on the matter. Terming it as a “serious issue”, Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said the House should come together and condemn it. It is a problem for members representing 125 crore people and that of the nation, he said. “If we do like this, it will be a big problem for democracy,” Kharge said and sought action against Mann. Protesting Mann’s action, R K Singh (BJP), also a former Home Secretary, claimed that the member has said he would do it again. “Tatkaal barkhast kariye (remove him immediately),” Singh said. The assailants opened fire when the Sub-inspector along with three other policemen approached the vehicle, Meena said, adding, Ladu Singh was admitted to a hospital with bullet injuries. A police sub-inspector was injured when some assailants allegedly opened fire at a police jeep in Rajasthan’s Nagaur district with the police suspecting that wanted criminal Anandpal Singh was behind the incident. Ladu Singh, SHO of Jaswantgarh police station, was injured last night when some persons sitting in a Bolero opened fire at the jeep, while he was on patrolling duty with three other policemen, Narottam Lal Meena, Circle officer of Ladnu, said. Police suspect that Anandpal Singh, carrying a reward of Rs one lakh and wanted in many cases, might have opened fire from the vehicle, as the incident took place near his house in Saanvrad village. “The border of the village has been sealed and an intense combing operation is on in the area,” the Circle Officer said. Anandpal Singh had escaped from police custody in September last year while being taken to Ajmer prison from a court in Parbatsar in Nagaur. He is accused in two dozen criminal cases in Didwana, Jaipur, Sikar, Sujangarh, Churu, Sanganer among others. The Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the Bertelsmann Stiftung launched a new Sustainable Development Goal Index and Dashboard to provide a report card for tracking Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) progress and ensuring accountability. The index collected avail- able data for 149 countries to assess where each country stands in 2016 with regard to achieving the SDGs. It ranks countries based on their performance across the 17 global goals, a set of ambitious objectives across the three dimensions of sustainable development economic development, social inclusion and environmental sustainability, underpinned by good governance. The index helps countries identify priorities for early actions and shows that every country faces major challenges in achieving the SDGs. “The Sustainable Development Goals are stretch goals, but they are within reach if countries work towards them with clarity and determination. The SDG Index and Dashboard can help each country to chart out a practical path for achieving the Goals,” said SDSN Director Jeffrey Sachs. The countries which are closest to fulfilling the goals are not the biggest economies but comparably small, developed countries. Sweden tops the chart and is followed by Denmark and Norway on the top three performing countries. the top ten performers. IMF HEAD CALLS FOR QUICK END TO BREXIT UNCERTAINTY Beijing: The head of the International Monetary Fund called Friday to end uncertainty over Britain’s vote to leave the European Union she says is dampening global economic growth. The IMF cut this year’s global growth forecast by 0.1 percentage points to 3.1 per cent in a report released this week due to the shockwaves of the British vote, said Christine Lagarde. Lagarde spoke after meeting with the Chinese premier, Li Keqiang, and leaders of the World Bank, the World Trade Organization and other bodies ahead of this weekend’s gathering of finance officials of the Group of 20 major economies. “Our first and immediate recommendation is for this uncertainty surrounding the terms of Brexit to be removed as quickly as possible so that we know the terms of trade and the ways in which the United Kingdom will continue to operate in the global economy,” said Lagarde at a news conference. Lagarde said that before the British vote, the IMF had been preparing to raise its global growth forecast by 0.1 percentage points due to improvement in Japan, China and the 17-country euro “Unfortunately, the United Kingdom decided to go for Brexit,” said Lagarde, a former French finance minister. “This is disappointing.” Investors are watching the G20 meeting for any sign the United States, Germany, China and other major economies may agree on joint action to accelerate a weak global economic recovery. A similar meeting in February in Shanghai ended with a joint statement that said coordinated action was impossible because major countries were at different points in their economic cycles. Some investors believe envoys in Shanghai agreed secretly to weaken the dollar to spur trade but there has been no official confirmation The final statement from this weekend’s gathering in Chengdu in China’s southwest “will be under scanner for any hints of policy coordination monetary or fiscal,” Citigroup economists said in a report. S Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew, speaking to reporters in Athens before flying to China, downplayed the likelihood of joint action. “I don’t think this is a moment that calls for the kind of coordinated action that occurred during the Great Recession in 2008 and 2009,” said Lew. “It really is a moment where we each need to do what we can to ensure that where growth is soft it gets stronger and that prospects for the mediumand long-term are improved. PML-N SWEEPS POK ASSEMBLY POLLS Lahore: Pakistan’s ruling party PML-N has swept the PoK’s legislative assembly elections, bagging 30 of 41 directly elected seats, with a two-thirds majority to form the new government. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) emerged victorious in the assembly elections held on Thursday in which a total of 26 political parties and 423 candidates took part. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), which won the last polls, could only manage to win two seats while cricketer-turned- politician Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tahreek-iInsaf (PTI) also got as many and Muslim Conference bagged three. It was expected that there would be a stiff competition between the three mainstream parties Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N), PPP and PTI but the PML-N routed them, stunning the political pundits. A total of 2.674 million Kashmiris exercised their right to franchise yesterday to elect members for the PoK Legislative Assembly, which will be the ninth since the parliamentary form of government was introduced in the region in 1975. While the region is spread over 14,245 square kilometres, the polling process is not restricted to this area and instead stretches to entire Pakistan because members for 12 out of the 41 directly elected seats are elected by 438,884 voters living in various parts of the country. Some 12 are reserved for refugees from Kashmir in Pakistan. Overall, the election was held in a peaceful manner under the supervision of the army. Clashes between the PML-N and PTI workers were reported at a couple of polling stations. Some five persons suffered injuries. Sharif congratulated the people and the elected members. “Holding the peaceful election in Kashmir (PoK) is a trust of people in democracy. Our government will fully help the newly elected government of Kashmir,” he said. Sharif said he hoped that the newly-elected members of the Legislative Assembly will “help the freedom struggle of Kashmir”. “Pakistanis are united to help their Kashmiri brethren in their struggle for freedom,” he added. Chief Election Commissioner Justice Ghulam Mustafa Mughal said “no com- plaint” of mishap or violence was reported during the polling from anywhere in the valley. He thanked the federal government and Pakistan Army for ensuring the transparent conduct of polls. The PPP in PoK was launched by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1973 and until December 2010, it faced Muslim Conference (MC) as its arch-opponent, but the situation changed in 2010 when Sharif launched the PML-N in the region. The 2011 polls were a neck-and-neck fight between the PPP and the PML-N though the MC was also in the field. As PoK rarely goes against the Centre, the PPP secured smooth victory and formed its government. The PML-N also did well by winning 10 seats. The MC, which had ruled for a long time, was reduced to four seats. admitted that most scholars, whether from China or the US, were wrong about Trump and they also ignored the strength of populism to some extent. Beijing: The rise of Donald Trump as the US Republican Party’s presidential candidate has made Chinese experts wonder how a businessman who was often ridiculed could have bested veteran politicians and is now just one step away from the presidency, official media said on Friday. While Chinese netizens remain skeptical about Trump and the US political system, scholars are surprised with the strength of the anti-establishment sentiment, state-run Global Times reported. “At the very beginning, we didn’t expect American disgust with Washington and WallStreet to have such a powerful impact on the US general election,” said Jin Canrong, deputy director of the Center of American Studies at the Renmin University of China. Jin said he believed the growing wealth gap and the slowing economy in the US has led to Trump’s growing support, besides his brashness which separates him from traditional politicians. Initially the mainstream in China believed that the election would pit members of two of the US’ elite political families the Hillary Clinton and Jeff Bush. Even Chinese officials have downplayed Trump’s role, though he has repeatedly made unfriendly remarks about China. Jin The hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 will be suspended if the aircraft is not found in an area now being searched, Malaysia, China and Australia said in a statement on Friday. The Boeing 777, with 239 aboard, disappeared in March 2014 while on a flight from the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, to Beijing. Almost A$180 million ($135 million) has been spent since then on an underwater search spanning 120,000 square kilometres (46,332 square miles) in the southern Indian Ocean. “In the absence of new credible evidence, Malaysia, Australia and China have collectively agreed to suspend the search upon completion of the 120,000 sq-km search,” Malaysian transport minister LiowTiong Lai told a news conference at which he read out the statement from him and his Chinese and Australian counterparts. The families of those on board, most of whom were from China, have pressed hard for answers ever since the plane went missing, and they are likely to decry any suggestion the search will end. Liow said the team was not “giving up on the search for MH370” even if the less than 10,000 square kilometres that remains to be searched did not come up with anything. “Should credible new information emerge which can be used to identify the specific location of the aircraft, consideration will be given in determining next steps,” the ministers said in the statement. Investigators believe the plane was deliberately flown thousands of miles off course before crashing into the southern Indian Ocean off Australia. Malaysian investigators said in 2015 there was nothing suspicious in the financial, medical or personal histories of pilots or crew. Several pieces of aircraft wreckage have washed up on beaches in Africa and been positively identified as coming from MH370 but they shed little light on the mystery. United Nations: Global temperatures for the first six months of this year have shattered previous records, setting 2016 on track to be the hottest year ever, the UN weather agency has said. “While acknowledging the significance of the debris, ministers noted that to date, none of it had provided information that positively identified the precise location of the aircraft,” the ministers said. The search has lasted more than two years but has found no sign of the main wreckage. Searchers at the Dutch company leading the underwater hunt for MH370 told news reporters they believed the plane may have glided down to the sea rather than dived, meaning He said all data and information collected from the flight, search and debris of MH370 would be released to the public. “It is in a very big volume, so it will take some time,” he said. Experts believed that the middle class played a role in stabilising society, but now the middle class prefers change. This could be the reason why experts had not expected Trump Chinese website guancha.cn, which focuses on politics, social issues and Trump-related news stories, has feedback of Trump supporters who believe he “will mess up the US and allow China to overtake the US as soon as possible.” Wang noted that the US people hold a very different view as they created something different in the political system. The “Trump Phenomenon” shows that the US political system is not controlled by traditional elites and a person like Trump, who has no political background, could also have a chance to compete against Hillary Clinton, Wang said. Song Luzheng, a research fellow at the China Institute of Fudan University, said it is the democratic system, not Trump, which should be blamed for the current mess in the election. Arctic sea ice melted early and fast, another indicator of climate change and carbon dioxide levels, which are driving global warming, have reached new highs, World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Thursday. “Another month, another record. And another. And another.Decades-long trends of climate change are reaching new climaxes, fuelled by the strong 2015/2016 El Nino,” said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas. The El Nino event, which turned up the Earth’s thermostat, has now disappeared, but “climate change, caused by heat-trapping greenhouse gases, will not,” Taalas said. He said it will result in more heatwaves, more extreme rainfall and potential The average temperature in the first six months of 2016 was 1.3 degrees Celsius warmer than the pre-industrial era in the late 19th century, according to NASA. To calculate global temperature statistics for its annual state of the climate report, WMO uses datasets from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (NASA GISS) and the UK’s Met Office and reanalysis data from the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF). NOAA said the global land and ocean average temperature for January June was 1.05 degrees Celsius above the 20th century average, beating the previous record set in 2015 by 0.20 degree Celsius. Each month in 2016 was record warm. Most of the world’s land and ocean surfaces had warmer to much-warmer-than-average conditions. The El Nino event which developed in 2015 and was one of the most powerful on record contributed to the record temperatures in the first half of 2016. It dissipated in May. June 2016 marked the 14th consecutive month of record heat for land and oceans and marked the 378th consecutive month with temperatures above the 20th century average. The last month with temperatures below the 20th century average was December 1984. Carbon dioxide concentrations have passed the symbolic milestone of 400 parts per million in the atmosphere so far this year and CO2 levels vary according to the season, but the underlying trend is upwards, the report said. They showed a surprising increase for the first half of 2016, rising in June 2016 to nearly 407 ppm, 4 ppm greater than June 2015, the agency said. “This underlines more starkly than ever the need to approve and implement the Paris Agreement on climate change, and to speed up the shift to low carbon economies and renewable energy,” Taalas said. FIVE CHARGED OVER THE NICE ATTACK ja Z. who holds both French and Albanian nationality. That was the first time officials directly involved in the search have lent some support to contested theories that someone was in control during the flight’s final moments. Liow told the news conference there was not enough evidence to confirm a controlled ditching, and added that he was confident the search was in the right place. Wang Yiwei, a senior fellow of international relations at the Renmin University of China, said experts did not expect globalisation to have an effect on Western countries’ middle class political views. Chinese netizens still consider Trump’s rise a comedy show. for higher impact tropical cyclones. they have been scouring the wrong patch of ocean. Poor and developing countries understandably score lowest on the SDG Index as they often have comparably little resources at their disposal. English Daily Five suspects have been formally charged over the truck attack in the French Riveria city of Nice that killed 84 people, the Paris prosecutor has said. Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, who mowed down crowds of people enjoying a Bastille Day fireworks display, had long plotted the carnage, prosecutor Francois Molins said. The revelations come as the French government continues to be plagued by questions over possible security failings, prompting authorities to launch an investigation into potential oversights. Molins said photos on Bouhlel’s phone showed he had likely already staked out the same July 14 event in 2015. It also emerged that one of the five suspects in custody, a Tunisian named Mohamed Oualid G., had filmed the scene the day after the carnage, as it crawled with paramedics and journalists. The five were brought before anti-terrorism judges on Thursday and charged. They are 22-year-old Franco-Tunisian Ramzi A., 37-year-old Tunisian Chokri C., 40-year-old Tunisian Mohamed Oualid G., 38-year-old Albanian Artan H., and his wife Enkeled- None were known to intelligence services, and only Ramzi A., who was born in Nice, had a criminal record, for robbery and drug offences. He led police to discover a Kalashnikov and a bag of ammunition on Thursday, however the purpose of the weapons was unclear. Ramzi, Chokri and Oualid were charged with being accomplices to murder by a terror group. Ramzi and the Albanian couple faced a second charge, of breaking the law on firearms in relation to a terrorist crime. They are accused of providing Bouhlel with the gun he fired at police officers before he was shot dead. More than 400 investigators have been poring over evidence since the grisly attack last Thursday, the third in France in 18 months, and it was analyses of Bouhlel’s telephone records that led them to the five suspects. While the Islamic State group claimed the attack, describing Bouhlel as a “soldier”, investigators have not found direct proof of his allegiance to the jihadists. Many people interviewed by investigators described the Tunisian father of three as “someone who did not practise the Muslim religion, ate pork, drank alcohol, took drugs and had an unbridled sexual activity”, Molins said earlier this week. However initial details of the investigation revealed Bouhlel had been fascinated with jihad for a while. In May last year, he took a photo of an article about the drug Captagon, an amphetamine used by jihadists in Syria. In July 2015 he took photos of the crowd at the Bastille Day fireworks display, as well as another crowd watching a concert on Nice’s Promenade Des Anglais three days later. Almonds are rich in vitamin E, calcium, magnesium and potassium. Additionally, almonds are a significant source of protein and fiber, while being naturally low in sugar. One 23-almond serving packs 13 grams of healthy unsaturated fats, 1 gram of saturated fat and no cholesterol or salt. Of all tree nuts, almonds rank highest in protein, fiber, calcium, vitamin E, riboflavin and niacin content by weight. There are 160 calories in 23 almonds. While many of these calories come from fat, it is primarily the healthy unsaturated fats and not the unhealthy saturated kind. Heart Health According to the FDA, eating 1.5 ounces a day of most nuts, like almonds, may reduce the risk of heart disease. Many of the nutrients in almonds help contribute to increased heart health. For one, almonds are rich in magnesium, which is critical in preventing heart attacks and hypertension. Several clinical studies have also shown almonds can be effective in reducing bad cholesterol and preserv- BUSINESS ing healthy cholesterol, which plays a major role in heart health. Weight Maintenance Nuts, like almonds, are also beneficial for maintaining a healthy weight. The fiber, protein and fat content of almonds means it only takes a handful to keep you feeling full and satisfied so you won’t have the urge to overeat. According to “Fitness” magazine, the magnesium in almonds helps regulate blood sugar, which is key in reducing food cravings. Almonds may even be able to block the body’s absorption of calories, making them the ultimate weight-loss-friendly snack. Because almonds are naturally high in calories, it’s important to limit your serving size to the recommended 1 ounce, or 23 nuts. Almonds may also promote gastrointestinal health and even combat diabetes. The high fiber content of almonds gives them prebiotic properties, which contributes to health in the gastrointestinal tract. Prebiotics are non-digestible food substances, which serve as food for the good bacteria in the intestinal tract and help maintain a healthy balance. According to a study by the American Diabetes Association, a Mediterranean diet incorporating nuts, such as almonds, helps fight diabetes even without significant changes to weight, physical activity or caloric intake. Raw Vs Roasted Almonds are available in a variety of preparations and it can be tough to know which is healthiest. Raw, unsalted almonds are a safe bet, but some people prefer the roasted taste. Both raw and roasted almonds pack a high dose of nutrients and minerals. Raw almonds have more naturally occurring beneficial fats, as some are lost in the roasting process. Dry roasted almonds have the same amount of calories as raw almonds, while almonds roasted in oil contain slightly more calories. Cold helps numb sharp pain and reduce inflammation. Use temperature therapy to complement meds and selfcare. It’s simple, affordable, soothing -- and you have to sit down to use either one. Packs For short-term pain relief, make a pack from items such as: * An electric heating pad * A gel pack that can be microwaved or frozen * A bag of ice or frozen vegetables Whether hot or cold, wrap the pack in a pillow case to help protect your skin. Or make a compress -- a washcloth or small towel soaked in hot or cold water, wrung out, and folded. Apply to the painful area for 15-20 minutes several times daily. Don’t Overdo It It’s normal for your skin to look a little pinker after using cold or heat. Before adding new ice or turning the heat back on, let your skin return to its normal color and temperature. If you see any of these signs after removing the warm or cold pack, call your doctor. These are signs the temperature was too extreme and may indicate skin damage. * Purplish-red, dark red, or spotty red and white color * Hives *Swelling *Blisters Heated Wax Therapy Another way to apply heat, especially to hands, elbows, and feet, is warm, melted paraffin. A heated container (available at drugstores and beauty supply stores) safely melts paraffin and mineral oil to make a paraffin bath. Dip the painful body part several times to build up a warm layer. Then cover it with plastic and wrap in a towel for 10-15 minutes until the wax cools. Unwrap and peel the wax away. To avoid irritation and pain, make sure the skin where you treat has no cuts or sores. Low-Level Heat If you find that heat helps ease your pain, try a continuous low-level heat wrap, available at drugstores. It’s a convenient way to keep painful areas warm. You can wear a heat wrap for up to 8 hours, even while you sleep. Follow the directions care- fully. Studies suggest that low-level, long-term heat applied directly on the skin can significantly reduce stiffness and tension and increase flexibility. Positive effects can last for 48 hours or longer. Hydrotherapy Showers and baths aren’t just for mornings. When you’re hurting, stand under or settle into warm water for a few minutes to help soothe and relax you. (If you’re over 70 or have heart problems, check with your doctor before getting into a hot tub.) Try a warm shower or bath before you exercise to help loosen joints and muscles. Use cool water after exercise to help calm deep, burning pain and reduce inflammation. Keep in mind, a bath can be for your whole body or just a part. Warm Clothes Want an easier -- and less painful -- start to your day? Tumble your clothes in the dryer for a few minutes before you put them on. The warm clothes will heat you up and may help ease morning pain and stiffness. Better yet: Ask your mate to put your clothes in the dryer while you rest for a few extra minutes in bed. Contrast Baths Get 2 tubs or containers large enough for your painful area ready with warm and cold water. Soak in the warm tub for about 5 minutes then plunge into the cold tub for about 1 minute. Go back to the warm for a few more minutes, then the cold for a minute. Repeat 4-5 times. While in the cold bath, have someone add water to the warm one to bring the temperature up. Contrast baths increase blood flow to help reduce swelling and pain and promote healing. In his speech, read out by Joint Secretary in the Finance Ministry Raj Kumar, Jaitley said that Britain’s decision to exit from the European Union, commonly termed as Brexit has further heightened uncertainty, market volatility and riskaverse behaviour. Kumar represented India at the first annual general body and board of governors meetings of the NDB which took place in Shang- Outlining the challenges, he said the current global economic context is far from being robust and is marked by a modest pickup in some advanced economies from their low levels of growth. He also said that decline in growth in emerging markets and developing economies, increased financial sector volatility, and, in general, a downward revision of global growth projections by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) also pose challenges. IMF earlier this week has cut global growth forecast for 2017 by 0.1 percentage point to 3.4 per cent citing “substantial” increase in economic, political, institutional uncertainty on account of Brexit. Jaitley said the structural problems of emerging markets and developing econo- “The sluggish global trade and low commodity prices have also adversely affected commodity-exporting EMDEs, by aggravating their corporate and other economic vulnerabilities,” he added. India, Jaitley stressed, is following the approach of ‘Reform to Transform’ through far reaching structural reforms. “We have taken several initiatives to boost investment climate and improve the ease of doing business,” he said. Referring to the initiates, he said setting up National Infrastructure Investment Fund would stimulate investment in infrastructure and Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code 2016, for easier exit of companies have been passed by Parliament. Besides, programmes such as Make in India, Startup India, and Skill India are focused on encouraging innovation, entrepreneurship and job creation. The government has launched a massive financial inclusion programme and more than 20 crore bank accounts have been opened for the unbanked persons. “We are now using Aadhaar, a unique identification system with statutory backing, as backbone for targeted delivery of financial and other subsidies, benefits and service,” Jaitley said TELANGANA GOVT. FOCUSING ON IRRIGATION PROJECTS: CM Hyderabad:Telangana government on Friday said it is determined to provide water to one crore acres of land through the existing and proposed irrigation projects and will also continue with free power scheme for farmers. The government made the assertion during a meet- ing presided over by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. During the meet, the CM reviewed Kaleswaram, Palamuru, Dindi and Sitarama Irrigation Projects with senior officials of Irrigation Department and Energy Minister Jagadish Reddy, an official release said. “The government is allotting Rs 25,000 crore every year in the budget for irrigation projects. Every month Rs 2,100 crore will be allotted to the Irrigation Department for spending on various projects. “The Government is also determined to continue free power scheme, which is costing Rs 4,000 crore per annum to the exchequer, for farmers,” Rao said. By redesigning some of the irrigation projects, the Government will be able to use at least 1,000 tmc water from Krishna and Godavari rivers which flows into the sea and gets wasted, the Chief Minister said. I had spent enough time out there in the middle and came so close to scoring a hundred,” he lamented. “At the same time, I am happy that I started on a good note and would like to carry on my good performances in coming matches. I want to use the form I am in.” North Sound (Antigua):ShikharDhawan has always had the uncanny knack of producing goods when the chips are down which he attributes to his “big heart” and the “backing” he has got from skipper ViratKohli and coach Anil Kumble. Dhawan scored a polished 84 and is certainly feeling a bit less pressure after there were unconfirmed reports that KL Rahul, with back-to-back half-centuries in practice games will replace him in the playing XI. “I feel it is important for any player if the captain and the coach are backing you and it gives a lot of confidence. That’s what matters and you also need to have self-belief that you can do that and it is a mixture of everything,” Dhawan told mediapersons after the first day’s play. “Opening is the toughest job and you need a big heart for it, when facing the new ball on a new (fresh) wicket. Bowlers also bowl with full energy and as opener your technique should also be good because you have to leave a lot of balls and you need patience as well,” said Dhawan. “The middle order needs it too but a new ball has its own challenge. Vijay got a good ball and it was a very quick ball. I was luckier in that sense as Gabriel was bowling really well,” he added. The Delhi left-hander was however a touch disappointed that he couldn’t get to a coveted three-figure mark as he was trapped leg-before by leg-spinner DevendraBishoo. “I felt dis- Dhawan did well to survive the first session when pacer Shannon Gabriel was extracting a lot of bounce from the strip. Along with CheteshwarPujara, the southpaw saw off the session adding 60 runs. “I feel that in the first session the wicket was fresh and the bowling was very good. So I was respecting the good balls and knew that I cannot afford to take a chance because there was extra bounce on the wicket. So I was playing close to my body and was not in a hurry and relaxed at the crease. It helped me later in the innings in both my partnerships with Pujara and Virat,” Dhawan explained. KOHLI CRUISES TO 12TH TEST TON AS INDIA END DAY ONE North Sound (Antigua):Virat Kohli continued his sublime form to ease to a 12th hundred and lead India to 302 for four on day one of the first cricket Test, here against the West Indies . The away side had a rather quiet first session where it managed 72 for one in 27 overs before Kohli arrived at the crease and stepped up the tempo. By stumps, India had a decent run rate of 3.35 runs per over. The pitch was flat and the West Indies bowling lacked depth to trouble the visitors who found it tough early on after Kohli opted to bat. Starting at 65 after tea, Kohli put on 57 runs with AjinkyaRahane (22) as the duo looked to build after losing both Dhawan and CheteshwarPujara (16) in the second session of play. Rahane was nearly dismissed cheaply, for 5 runs, as Shannon Gabriel (1-43) induced an edge that fell short of slips. But thereafter the vice-captain tightened up his game and didn’t give another chance until his eventual dismissal. In the meantime, the duo kept the run-rate flowing, bringing up the 200-mark in the 61st over. Then, five overs later, they brought up their 50-partnership, coming off only 65 balls. Kohli was looking particu- larly good in this period, as cover drives and on-drives started booming off his blade. Perhaps Carlos Brathwaite (0-46) was the only bowled who troubled him a bit, but even was not able to create a straightforward wicket-taking opportunity. Just as they were looking good, Rahane was dismissed, a loose stroke off DevendraBishoo (3-108) lobbing up and he was caught at midwicket. It was yet another loose dismissal for India, with only Murali Vijay (7) getting out to a good delivery earlier in the morning. Thereafter, with 22 overs remaining in the day’s play, it was surprising to see Ashwin come out to bat ahead of WriddhimanSaha. But he did an immaculate job, including some silken drives down the ground, and the two batsmen stayed unbeaten until the end of play, bringing up the 300-mark in the 88th over. Kohli and Ashwin’s stand partnership rescued India from what looked like a disappointing first outing for the five top-order batsmen theory. RAMKUMAR ADVANCES TO QUARTERFINALS OF US CHALLENGER ter making it one-set apiece, Ramkumar made a fiery start to the deciding set by sending down four consecutive aces to hold at love. He then broke Statham, ranked as low as 472, in the third game to create a lead. He served a double fault to face a breakpoint in the fourth but wriggled out with an ace to lead 3-1. Binghamton (USA): Young Indian Davis Cupper Ramkumar Ramanathan fought past Jose Statham in a three-setter to make it to the singles quarterfinals of the USD 50,000 ATP Challenger tournament. The 214-ranked 21-yearold Indian, who made his Davis Cup debut last week in Chandigarh against Korea, rallied to beat his Kiwi opponent 2-6 6-4 7-6(3) in two hours and 22 minutes A statement from WADA said the global anti-doping group was “satisfied” with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decision on Friday to deny an appeal by Russian track and field athletes for Rio reinstatement, saying it helps ensure a “level” playing field at next month’s Games. “It is now up to other international federations to consider their responsibilities under the World Anti-Doping Code as it re- and booked a last-eight berth in the hard court event. Ramkumar said it was a relief to win a tie-breaker after losing quite a few in the last few weeks. It was the first tie-breaker that Ramkumar managed to win having lost five in a row since Wimbledon Qualifiers. “It was a close match. The guy had great returns and passing hots. I had to go for my serve and shots. In the third set I broke him but was broken back. I was serving for the match at 6-5 but could not seal it. It was a good tie-breaker to win after losing a few in the past few months. I am looking forward to playing the next match,” Ramkumar told reporters after his match. Ramkumar took a while to settle on hard courts after playing on grass last week and found his rhythm from the second set onwards. Af- However, the New Zealander broke back in the sixth game to level it 3-3 and eventually it all boiled down to the tie-breaker. The Indian kept playing aggressively to reach the quarterfinals, where he faces British giant killer Brydan Klein, who had knocked out top seed Quentin Halys in the opening round. Ramkumar’s compatriot Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan suffered a shock first round defeat in doubles along with third seed partner Andrey Golubev. They lost 6-7(10) 2-6 to unseeded pair of Liam Broady Guilherme Clezar. lates to their Russian national federations and up to the International Olympic Committee to consider its responsibilities under the Olympic Charter,” the WADA statement said. Evidence of a state-supported doping scheme by Russia at the 2014 Winter Olympics and other events was unveiled Monday when the findings of a WADA-commissioned report were released. IOC executives talked Tuesday about a ban on all Russians competing at Rio but set aside a decision to check legal issues and see what CAS would rule on the IAAF ban appeal. Under IAAF Rules, Russian track and field athletes are ineligible to compete in international competitions unless they satisfy specific criteria. “WADA firmly believes this is not about punish- ing some athletes for the actions of others,” WADA president Craig Reedie said. “It is about the IAAF requiring its member national federation (from Russia) to live up to the IAAF’s World Anti-Doping Code compliant rules by enforcing them effectively in their jurisdiction. This is vital to ensure that all athletes are competing on a level playing field. BOWLERS NEED TO BE PATIENT AS IT’S A BATTING PITCH: BISHOO North Sound (Antigua): West Indies leg spinner Devendra Bishoo has said the pitch at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium is batting friendly where the bowlers need to be patient in order to get wickets. Courtesy ViratKohli’s attacking unbeaten 143, India have reached 302 for 4 with Bishoo emerging as the most successful bowler with figures of 3 for 108. “I think this is a very good pitch. It’s a batting pitch,” Bishoo said after the day’s play. “We, as bowlers, have to be patient as much as possible and take it one ball at a time. Day one pitches don’t turn that much. On days three, four and maybe day five, it’s going to turn more,” the pint-sized leg-spinner added. Kohli (143 batting) led from the front to lay a solid platform for his team with the other major contribution coming from opener ShikharDhawan (84). The Indian captain, who also crossed the 3000-run mark in his 42nd Test, had the support of RavichandranAshwin (22 batting) at close of play as the two shared an unbeaten 66-run stand. Montreal: The World Anti-Doping Agency on Friday asked the International Olympic Committee to “consider its responsibilities” as it debates whether or not to ban all Russian competitors from the Rio Games. “We could have been in a better position probably. At the end of the day, it’s a good pitch and the Indian batsmen kept relishing it. We just didn’t put the ball in the areas as much, but we bowled well in patches. “We just have to take it one over at a time and take it session by session. Put the ball in the right areas for as long as possible, and make it hard for them. At the end of it, we have to be patient,” he added. While he finished with three wickets, it was pacer Shannon Gabriel who bowled the best on day one, putting openers ShikharDhawan and Murali Vijay in a spot of bother. He looked dangerous in every spell. “I think Shannon bowled really good upfront today and he started off very well. He bowled with great pace. The rest of the bowlers, as I said, bowled well in patches. We need to be a bit more patient because the wicket is good,” said Bishoo. When asked if West Indies missed a trick by picking only four bowlers plus debutant Roston Chase, he replied in negative. “No. At the end of day, whatever team we have to play with as a team, we have to play. We support each other and give our 100 percent. I’m not going to put anything on anybody. To play good cricket, bowlers have to do their job and batsmen have to do theirs.” Bishoo didn’t speak much about Kohli’s hundred, only outlining that the hosts can fight back in the days to come. “It’s not challenging (to bowl at him). At the end of the day, it’s cricket. We have to be patient. It’s just the start of the series and there is a long way to go. Everybody has good and bad days, we just have to move forward as a team,” he signed off. NO MORE TENURE AFTER NINE YEARS IN OFFICE: LODHA PANEL TO STATE ASSOCIATIONS New Delhi: The Supreme Court-appointed Lodha Committee on Thursday clarified to the state associations that any office-bearer who has cumulatively or separately completed nine years in office before or after July 18 will be disqualified from contesting elections. Sources told reporters that the committee on Thursday sent an e-mail communication to BCCI President Anurag Thakur and secretary Ajay Shirke asking them to inform the state associations with queries in this regard. The two questions asked by a number of state associations are: 1) Are individuals who have cumulatively completed nine years as Office Bearers of a State Association disqualified from again becoming office bearers? 2) Is the 9-year disqualification period to be reckoned only commencing from the date of the judgment (18.07.2016) or does it include tenures as office bearers prior to that date? The committee in their clarification pointed out: 1) Any individual who has cumulatively completed a period of nine years as an Office Bearer of a State Association stands disqualified from contesting elections or holding a post in the Association. 2) This will apply to any person as of the date of the election, and will include periods prior to the date of the judgment (18.07.2016). “So that there is no doubt, if any individual has completed 9 years as an office bearer (wheth- er through consecutive or separate terms; whether in one post or another) of the State Association by or before 18.07.2016, that individual stands disqualified,” it stated. The committee also requested BCCI to ensure that state associations are informed in this regard. “This clarification may be kindly intimated to the various State and Member Associations, so that individual missives to either the BCCI or this Committee on this count may be avoided. This is in addition to the direction sent on Wednesday that the BCCI and the State Associations put on hold all elections and electoral processes,” it concluded. CÉLINE DION FLAWLESSLY IMITATES RIHANNA, MICHAEL JACKSON AND MORE IN WHEEL OF MUSICAL IMPRESSIONS There’s no denying Celine Dion’s status as a musical legend, but her own musical talents aside, it seems like she has a knack for impressions. The “My Heart Will Go On” songstress appeared on The Tonight Show Thursday night and played Wheel of Musical Impressions with host Jimmy Fallon. Ariana Grande previously slayed in the game in which the guest has to perform a random selection of songs in the voice of other famous singers, but Dion might have stolen the victory crown right out from under her! Dion’s first time spinning the wheel resulted in her having to perform “Frère Jacques” in Cher”s voice, and although Dion has prominent vocals of her own, she was able to nail down Cher’s iconic vocals without a problem— like the legend that she is! Despite the random and hilarious song selection, Dion made the children’s tune sound like an amazing song. For her next cover, Drake’s “One Dance,” she enlisted Fallon to join her in a Michael Jackson-style version. Dion flawlessly combined “Smooth Criminal” with Fallon’s cover of the Drake tune, and somehow viewers ended up with the duet of the century they never knew they needed.
