STRIDE: Striving Toward Riding Improvement & Dressage Education STRIDE Dressage Inc. is the Ocala, Florida Group Membership Organization of the US Dressage Federation (USDF) www.STRIDEdressage.org March 2014 Newsletter www.STRIDEdressage.org “TRAINING UP THE LEVELS” AT MARCH 16th STRIDE DRESSAGE CLINIC STRIDE will host its first 2014 Dressage clinic on Sunday, March 16th with trainer Lorna Donahue at Charlotte and Chris Trentelman’s Rebel Ridge Farm in Anthony on Sunday, March 16. This clinic will focus on “Training Up the Levels.” Lorna hails from Washington, Illinois. She is a USDF Bronze and Silver Medalist and has earned the USDF Freestyle Bar. She has shown multiple horses through Intermediaire I. Lorna’s students are successfully competing at Young Horse Finals through FEI. She has coached several youths to Young Rider Championships and “A” rating in Pony Club. Lorna’s teaching is articulate, positive and effective. She is well-versed in training changes, piaffe and passage; and her students quickly learn the NEWS FROM & ABOUT STRIDE MEMBERS importance of connection, impulsion and how to enhance the quality of their horse’s gaits. Lorna also imports horses from Holland, making regular trips in search of quality prospects for her sales program. Riders will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Complete the application on page 5 and mail it with $85 (check and/or STRIDE vouchers) as soon as possible. STRIDE members may elect to apply a STRIDE clinic subsidy of $20 to bring the fee down to $65. (Note: Every STRIDE member may use the subsidy once a year.) Stalls are available for $15; you can ship in the day before. Auditors are most welcome at no charge. Bring a lunch and stay throughout the day. From REBECCA SOLCH ([email protected]): “I am training to be a captain for next fall and was given the responsibility to help organize our upcoming home show under the supervision of my current captain and co-captain. We are hosting our second home show this upcoming March 22&23 and are in need of horses to be donated for this weekend. We compete from intro to first level test 2 and can accept any level horse. If you would like information about this and how you can help, I can send you a more detailed informational letter. Thanks.” March 2014 STRIDE Newsletter, page 1 From JOE DELFINO: “To all who expressed concern after my horse fell in a hole in the Black Prong dressage arena, I wanted to thank you all for your concern and let you know that he is on stall rest and appears to be recovering. We hope the bone chip will continue to dissolve and the cannon bone will continue to regenerate bone. A special thanks to our vet Dr. Anne Christopherson and Dr. Natalie Lamneck. The clinics are coming! The Winter show season is in full swing, and the winter trainers are in town. While Wellington is the mecca for East Coast winter dressage, every year more trainers and their clients are basing operations in Ocala for the season. It seems a few times every month one or two well-known clinicians plan visits to Ocala farms. Your Board and Clinic Committee have been busy making plans as well! Our first task was formalizing a clinic plan for the club. In the past, we scheduled clinics on a rotating schedule: “Rider year” and “Driver year.” Now that the club has grown, and interest in Western Dressage has also grown, what were we to do? Go to a three year schedule? No, we came up with a better plan! First, we did away with the restrictions regarding "driving year" or "rider year." Clinics/camps will be scheduled as interest indicates. STRIDE will sponsor at least one day-long clinic for each discipline (Ridden Dressage, Western Dressage and Driven Dressage) each year. Are you interested in a multiday clinic or camp? One member has volunteered to explore that option; if you are interested in helping, contact Diane Laws at (352) 690-1898. Since education is STRIDE’s primary mission, we want to make these clinics as affordable as possible. To that end, we will offer subsidies for members (as the budget allows) to reduce the price to participate. To be fair to everyone, each member may only use one subsidy each year. While there is no subsidy for non-STRIDE clinics, exceptional opportunities will be considered as individual events by the Board. If you recall, we offered subsidies for the USDF Adult Clinic with Hilda Gurney last year, and also for the Benefit Driving Clinic in January. found her style soft and welcoming and her comments to her student were clear and easy to follow. I also have heard glowing reports from current and former STRIDE members who have worked with her. I think she is a wonderful choice for STRIDE! While the focus of the clinic is “Training Up the Levels,” don’t think this is just for those who show! “Training Up the Levels” only means moving forward in your horse’s training. Application is on page 5. Well, that’s all the news there is from the President’s desk this month. See you at the show March 2nd, and at the Lorna Donahue Clinic on the 16th! - Loretta LORETTA’S RECIPE OF THE MONTH Baked Brie. This is a great appetizer for a party. Choose your favorite toppings and have fun! Ingredients: 1 Brie round Pecans or almonds (1 cup or more) Brown Sugar Bourbon or dark Rum Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Take the Brie out of the wooden box and remove the plastic wrapper. Do not remove the “skin” of the wheel. Place it in an oven safe dish that is nice enough to serve from. Top with nuts and brown sugar. I like to put some around the outside as well. Pour liquor over the whole thing. Put in oven until brown sugar is bubbly. Serve with crackers. It will help if you use a sharp knife to cut the brie skin open after it is heated. I have made this with bourbon with almonds, and rum with pecans. Next Christmas I am trying it with cranberries and Bourbon. Be creative!! Now comes the fun part: selecting clinicians. Board member Carol Rike has been hard at work gathering ideas and researching clinicians. If you have ideas, contact her via email [email protected] or phone (352) 351-8047. Our first clinic has been scheduled for March 16 (remember, those clinicians flee back north in April or May!). Our clinician is Lorna Donahue. A USDF Silver medalist, Lorna has shown through I-1 and her students compete through the FEI levels. I had the opportunity to watch a short lesson the other day. I March 2014 STRIDE Newsletter, page 3 GROOMING FOR SUPPLENESS The day after speaking to STRIDE at our monthly dinner meeting February 18th, Dr. Patricia Bona, DC (Pennsylvania) provided STRIDE members with a hands-on demonstration of her “therapeutic crossfiber grooming” technique. The demonstration was held at member Ellie Metelits’ Justa Farm, where Dr. Bona has been treating Ellie’s horses for many years. ABOVE: Working on the “thumbprint” on Chantella ABOVE RIGHT: Dr. Bona shows STRIDE member Barbara Brown (left) how to feel the edge of the muscle fascia, while Ellie Metelits holds her Lipizzan Chantella.
