This is a notable example of civil engineering from the vice regal era.
The third arch of the aqueduct crosses a ravine that is a little over 1,000 meters
deep. The majestic aqueduct with a length of 44 km was built in 1543 a 1560 under
the direction of Father Tembleque, a Franciscan friar, to transport water into the town
of Otumba. Its 156 arches are regarded among the longest and highest of the kind
still standing in the country.
