Can We See As God Sees?
Dear Friends,
In Luke’s gospel, Jesus is invited to dine at the home of a Pharisee, for entrapment, to find reason to attack him.
Jesus shocks them by healing people on the Sabbath. He also uses the situation to teach those expecting places of
honor at the table: “all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” The
last will be first. This is the “messianic inversion”: in God’s kingdom, the despised and insignificant come first.
The people trying to ambush Jesus are getting what they deserve; he continues to pull the rug from under their
feet. He teaches that invitations not be limited to those who can invite in return, but should include “the poor, crippled, lame, blind,” who have no means of repaying the favor. Gratuitous love sets the tone for the kingdom, the “city
of the living God” (Hebrews). This is the God who invites the people to “conduct your affairs with humility, and you
will be loved more than the giver of gifts” (Sirach).
Our government is weighing a bombing attack on Syria in retaliation for its alleged use of chemical weapons. I recommend Bishop Murphy’s comments (http://licatholic.org/bishop-murphy-on-syria-contain-the-conflict-do-notexpand-it/), and Pope Francis: “It is not confrontation that offers hope to resolve problems, but rather the ability to
meet and dialogue.” Also, I update a little remembered quote of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr: “The bombs in
Vietnam (Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria) explode at home,” as we mark the 50th anniversary of “I have a dream...”

En el evangelio de Lucas, Jesús está invitado a cenar a la casa de un fariseo, para atraparlo, buscando razón para
atacarlo. Jesús les escandaliza curando a la gente en el Sábado. También utiliza la situación para enseñar a los que
esperan puestos de honor en la mesa: "El que se engrandece a sí mismo será humillado, y el que se humilla será
engrandecido." Los últimos serán los primeros. Esta es la "inversión mesiánica": en el reino de Dios, los despreciados e
insignificantes son los primeros.
Las personas que intentan emboscar a Jesús están recibiendo lo que merecen, pero él sigue socavando sus malos
intentos. Él enseña que las invitaciones no se deben limitar a los que pueden dar en recompensa, sino que deben incluir

REFLECTION
In the Gospel today, Jesus warns us not

That sort of giving mirrors the bountiful
giving of God, and Jesus assures us it is
blessed indeed!
We are grateful this week for all stewards in
our parish who give real thought to how God
has blessed them and then strive to give in
proportion to what they have received.

Thoughts of Pope Francis
On May 22, 2013, Pope Francis greeted the men
and women coming to the “Gift of Maria” Food
Kitchen, located at the walls of the Vatican, by
condemning a “dictatorship of the economy” and
“cult of money.” The Pope said, “A savage capitalism has taught the logic of profit at any cost,
of giving in order to get, of exploitation without
thinking of people...and we see the results in the
crisis we are experiencing.”
On May 16, 2013, he said: “The worldwide
financial and economic crisis seems to highlight
their distortions and above all the gravely deficient human perspective, which reduces man to
one of his needs alone, namely, consumption.
Worse yet, human beings themselves are nowadays considered as consumer goods which can be
used and thrown away. We have started a throw
-away culture. ….Money has to serve, not to rule!
The Pope loves everyone, rich and poor alike, but
the Pope has the duty, in Christ’s name, to
remind the rich to help the poor, to respect them,
to promote them.”

“Unemployment — the lack or loss of work — is a phenomenon that is spreading like an oil slick
in vast areas of the west and is alarmingly widening the boundaries of poverty. Moreover there is
no worse material poverty, I am keen to stress, than the poverty which prevents people from earning their bread and deprives them of the dignity of work.
Well, [unemployment no longer affects] only the south of the world but also the entire planet.
Hence the need ‘to rethink solidarity’ no longer as simply assistance for the poorest, but as a
global rethinking of the whole system, as a quest for ways to reform it and correct it in a way consistent with the fundamental human rights of all human beings. It is essential to restore to this
word ‘solidarity’, viewed askance by the world of economics — as if it were a bad word — the
social citizenship that it deserves. Solidarity is not an additional attitude, it is not a form of social
alms-giving but, rather, a social value; and it asks us for its citizenship.
The current crisis is not only economic and financial but is rooted in an ethical and anthropological crisis. Concern with the idols of power, profit, and money, rather than with the value of
the human person has become a basic norm for functioning and a crucial criterion for organization. We have forgotten and are still forgetting that over and above business, logic
and the parameters of the market is the human being; … men and women in as much as they
are human beings by virtue of their profound dignity: to offer them the possibility of living a dignified life and of actively participating in the common good. Benedict XVI reminded us that precisely because it is human, all human activity, including economic activity, must be ethically
structured and governed …. We must return to the centrality of the human being, to a more ethical
vision of activities and of human relationships without the fear of losing something.”

Rachel’s Vineyard Retreats for Healing after Abortion
Rachel’s Vineyard weekend retreats are a beautiful healing opportunity for any woman or man who has struggled with the emotional or spiritual pain of an abortion. Spiritual exercises focusing on God’s forgiveness, compassion and mercy are shared, along with psychological exercises that help work through repressed anger and
grief that may exist. Many of the preconceived fears of condemnation are transformed into blessings. Memories of abandonment, pain and confusion are replaced by peace and reconciliation.
A Rachel’s Vineyard retreat will be held at Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington on
Oct. 11-13, 2013. The retreat starts on Friday evening and ends on Sunday afternoon. A $150 fee includes

crisis financiera y económica parece poner de relieve sus distorsiones y sobre todo la perspectiva humana muy deficiente, lo que reduce al hombre a una de
sus necesidades, a poseer el consumo.
Peor aún, los propios seres humanos son considerados hoy en día como los bienes de consumo que pueden ser utilizados y desechados. Hemos iniciado una
cultura de usar y tirar. .... El dinero debe ser para
servir, no para gobernar!
El Papa ama a todos, ricos y pobres por igual, pero
el Papa tiene el deber, en nombre de Cristo, a
recordar a los ricos que deben ayudar a los pobres,
a respetarlos, y a honrarlos.

EL DESEMPLEO MUNDIAL
Dirigido a Teólogos, Roma, sábado, 25 de mayo de 2013
“El desempleo – la falta o perdida de trabajo – es un fenómeno que se esta extendiendo
como aceite en las grandes áreas del oeste y esta alarmando ampliamente a los lugares
de pobreza. Además no hay un material mas malo para la pobreza que el desempleo, estoy interesado en acabar con la pobreza que priva a las personas de conseguir su pan para alimentarse y los priva de un trabajo digno.
Bien, el desempleo no solamente el sur del mundo sino también el planeta entero. Condenemos la necesidad “volvamos a pensar en la solidaridad” no solamente en una simple
asistencia para los mas pobres, sino como una consideración mundial de todo el sistema,
como una pregunta para las formas de reformarlo y corregirlo en una forma consistente
con los derechos humanos fundamentales de todos los seres humanos. Es esencial reformar a esta palabra “solidaridad”, visto como algo horrible por el mundo de la economía –
como si esto fuera una mala palabra – es lo que la ciudadanía merece. Solidaridad no es
un comportamiento adicional, no es una forma social de caridad, sino, un valor social, y
que debemos tener como ciudadanos.
La crisis actual no es solamente económica y financiera sino que es erradicada en una crisis ética y antropológica. Preocupación con los ídolos de poder, ganancia, y dinero,
en vez de hacerlo con el valor de los seres humanos que son una norma principal
para el funcionamiento y criterio crucial para la organización. Nos hemos olvidado y todavía seguimos olvidándonos que antes y sobre todo negocio, lógica y
parámetros de mercado esta el ser humano,…..hombres y mujeres que son seres
humanos con virtudes y una profunda dignidad: ofrecerles la posibilidad de vivir una vida
digna y de participar activamente en bien común. Benedicto XVI nos recordó que precisamente porque es humano, toda actividad humana, incluyendo la actividad económica, debe ser éticamente formada y gobernada…..Debemos regresar para la centralización del ser
humano a una visión mas ética de actividades y relaciones humanas sin miedo de perder
algo”.
