When the second edition of the Archi-World® Academy Awards is now aking off, the vision of a sustainable architecture can’t be overlooked.
The jury members Mario Cucinella, Peter Stutchbury, Paul de Ruiter, Thomas Herzog, in particular, consider this approach as their leitmotiv.
Master the energy needs, reasonably manage the natural resources, including the building maintenance, whilst preserving life quality : all
these parameters are part of (almost) all the architectural projects. And also, recently, everywhere in the world. Every day a competition,
new real estate projects or new buildings are referring to these themes. Some examples among others, the renovation of Brasilia’s Mané
Garrincha Stadium for the 2014 World Cup, which will be the first stadium in the world fully energy self-sufficient, thanks to a ring of solar
captors, or the Fujisawa Sustainable Smart Town project (SST) proposed by Panasonic, Accenture and seven other companies near Tokyo.
This residential and ecological town project will abundantly use solar energy. Or again, the international competition to build a bioclimatic
European school in Creta, won by the Greek team EuZen architecture. Based on a succession of patios, where thermal comfort comes from
shade and natural ventilation, the concept associates the Cretan traditional construction techniques (rough stone and rammed earth) with
the twenty first century technologies and needs. A bioclimatic building is not a recent idea. Already in 1974, Ken Yeang proposes an innovative
theory on « green design » which is then a young discipline. When, at that moment, more and more high buildings were constructed, the
Malaysian architect tried to find the best way to conciliate verticality and bioclimatics. During his two decade long career, he has drawn
about 200 ecological projects from London to Dubai, finding regrettable the difficulty to put ecology in the heart of the building industry, in
emerging countries. Rediscovering the construction principles which permitted the builders, in former times, to compose with the climate,
the today’s bioclimatic architecture searches for a balance between the design and the building, the climate and the environment, the
inhabitants’ life styles and rhythms.
À l’heure où la deuxième édition des Archi-World® Academy Awards prend son envol, la vision d’une architecture durable est incontournable.
Les membres du jury Mario Cucinella, Peter Stutchbury, Paul de Ruiter, Thomas Herzog, notamment, en ont fait le leitmotiv de leur démarche.
Maîtriser les besoins énergétiques, gérer de façon raisonnable les ressources naturelles y compris dans le cadre de la maintenance des
bâtiments, prendre en compte la qualité de vie : tous ces paramètres désormais sont à la base de (presque) tous les projets d’architecture.
Et, phénomène assez récent, partout dans le monde. Il n’est pas un seul jour qui n’annonce des concours, de futurs développements
immobiliers ou de nouveaux bâtiments sur cette thématique. Exemples parmi tant d’autres, la rénovation de l’Estádio Mané Garrincha à
Brasilia en vue de la Coupe du monde 2014 qui en fera le premier stade autonome en énergie du monde, grâce à un anneau de capteurs
solaires, ou le concept de Fujisawa Sustainable Smart Town (SST) que projettent Panasonic, Accenture et sept autres entreprises près de
Tokyo. Ce projet de ville résidentielle et écologique aura abondamment recours à l’énergie solaire. Ou encore le concours international pour
la réalisation d’une école européenne bioclimatique en Crète remporté par l’équipe grecque EuZen architecture. Basé sur une succession de
patios où l’ombre et la ventilation naturelle assurent le confort thermique, le concept associe les principes de la construction traditionnelle
crétoise (pierre brute et pisé) aux technologies et aux besoins du XXIe siècle. L’immeuble bioclimatique n’est pas une idée récente. En 1974
déjà, Ken Yeang propose une thèse innovante sur le "green design " qui est alors une discipline très jeune. A l’époque où les immeubles se
multiplient, l’architecte malais réfléchit à un moyen de concilier verticalité et bioclimatique. Sur une carrière longue de plusieurs décennies,
il a dessiné près de 200 projets à caractère écologique de Londres à Dubaï, déplorant toutefois la difficulté de mettre l'écologie au cœur de
l’industrie du bâtiment dans les pays émergents. Redécouverte des principes de construction qui permettaient aux bâtisseurs d’autrefois de
composer avec le climat, l’architecture bioclimatique d’aujourd’hui recherche un équilibre entre la conception et la construction, le climat et
l’environnement, les modes et rythmes de vie des habitants.

One of the most acclaimed architects in Australia, Peter Stutchbury designed environmentally
responsible buildings with expressive and intelligent approach.
In 1972, Peter Stutchbury (Sidney 1954) went to study architecture
at the Newcastle University. Time spent living in the desert country
during his formative years, allowed him to develop an appreciation
of the logic behind Australian landscape and the sensitive nature of
its sustainability. Than he carries a deep knowledge and understanding of his country, its climate, landscape and culture. Graduated as
an architect in 1978 at the University of Newcastle Peter Stutchbury,
the principal of the firm Peter Stutchbury Architecture, has practiced
since 1981, producing a wide variety of works acclaimed internationally and wining numerous awards.
It is the residential architecture with the Israël House in 1990 – an
elegantly simple three-room structure with a curved corrugated iron
roof on Paradise Beach – that made him known. Built 20 years later,

not far away, the Cliff House, designed with the architect Fergus Scott,
is equipped with innovative sun-protecting screens. The two houses
share the same architect’s obsession on details and his unbelievable
capacity to settle the buildings in the landscape. Later, all his houses
will be perfectly integrated in the sites (beachfronts, exposed cliffs or
suburban areas).
Famous for his architecture lectures, he is not scared of breaking
boundaries. He denounces the standard constructions unsuitable
for the climate and the Australians’ needs. Taking account of the microclimate, the orientation, the view and the materials, his approach
seeks to integrate the best practice of sustainable architecture,
including the passive solar design, the rainwater storage and the
transversal ventilation without air conditioning. And shows an optimal use of geothermal energy and even of a cliff (Cliff Face House)
supplying the geothermal mass. Peter Stutchbury also attracted
international attention through publication among others with his
extreme climate housing Silver House in Cherepovets in Russia
(2008 Living Steel Award), his Wall House for Issey Miyake in Japan

similar. Modes of communication are providing immediate access
to style. Architects are being seduced by form. » His monography
“Under The Edge: The Architecture of Peter Stutchbury” published
in 2011 may be a counter-proposal to the mainstream architecture

of the developed world. It is probably for this reason that Australian architecture now attracts international interest. In line with
the grand « masters », particularly Glen Murcutt and Richard Leplastrier, Peter Stutchbury offers us an architecture with « the color
of earth, the texture of sky and the feeling of air »*.

and some experimental houses, seen as the culmination of a search
for ultimate ecological sustainability in architecture. His commitment to share his knowledge seems to be the cornerstone of an
architectural approach based on his conceptual thoughts rigour
and numerous technical innovations.
Teaching represents for him a significant contribution to the discipline of architecture and its future. « Contemporary architecture
is losing sense of origin and is gradually becoming universally

renommés d’Australie.
En 1972, Peter Stutchbury (Sidney 1954) part étudier l'architecture à
l'Université de Newcastle. Le temps passé dans les zones désertiques
pendant ses années de formation et son étude des modes de vie aborigènes lui permettent de développer une profonde compréhension
de son pays, son climat, ses paysages et sa culture. Et le respect de
l’environnement dans son sens le plus large. Diplômé architecte en
1978, Peter Stutchbury – au sein de son agence Peter Stutchbury
Architecture - a produit depuis 1981 une grande variété d'œuvres de
renommée internationale et gagné de nombreux prix.
C'est son architecture domestique avec la Maison Israël en 1990 - une
structure simple et élégante avec un toit en tôle ondulée incurvée à
Paradise Beach - qui le met vraiment à part. Construite à 20 ans d'in-

tervalle non loin de là, la Cliff House, conçue avec l'architecte Fergus
de l’architecte aux détails et son incroyable capacité à créer des bâtiments qui s’ancrent dans le paysage. Par la suite, toutes ses maisons
vont découler de cette même intégration totale aux lieux (bords de
plages, falaises exposées ou zones suburbaines).
Célèbre pour ses conférences, l’architecte n'a pas peur de briser les
tabous. Il dénonce les constructions standards inadaptées au climat
et aux besoins des Australiens. Prenant en compte le microclimat,
l'orientation, les vues et les matériaux, les siennes s'appliquent au
contraire à intégrer les meilleures pratiques de l'architecture durable, y compris la conception solaire passive, le stockage de l'eau
de pluie et une ventilation transversale sans climatisation. Elles
montrent aussi une utilisation optimale de l'énergie géothermique et
même d’une falaise (Cliff Face House) qui fournit la masse thermique.
Peter Stutchbury attire tous les regards par son projet d’habitation
en climat extrême à Cherepovets en Russie (Silver House), lauréate
du Living Steel Award en 2008. Aboutissement d'une recherche sur la
durabilité ultime en architecture, cette maison expérimentale fonctionnelle et construite à faible coût, peut être entièrement démontée
et déplacée, donc recyclable à l’infini.
Son engagement à partager ses connaissances semble être la pierre
angulaire d’une démarche architecturale axée sur la rigueur de
sa pensée conceptuelle et de nombreuses innovations techniques.
L’enseignement représente pour lui une contribution importante à
la discipline de l'architecture, à son avenir. « L'architecture contemporaine est en train de perdre son sens d'origine pour devenir
globale. Les modes de communication offrent un accès immédiat à
un style. Les architectes sont séduits par la forme. » Sa monogra-
phie ‘Under the Edge: The Architecture of Peter Stutchbury’ publiée
en 2011 peut-être considérée comme une contreproposition à l'architecture dominante du monde développé. C'est sans doute pour cette
raison que l’architecture australienne attire aujourd'hui un intérêt
international. Dans la lignée de ses grands ‘maîtres’, Glenn Murcutt
et Richard Leplastrier notamment, Peter Stutchbury nous offre une
architecture qui possède « la couleur de la terre, la texture du ciel et
la sensation de l'air* ».

Paul de Ruiter Architects is one of the most sustainable architecture offices in Europe. From its very
start in the nineties, the firm has been pioneering
the realms of sustainability and ever since it is a
great advocate and practitioner of energy saving
architectural design.
Two years after having completed his studies at the Delft Technical University (Netherlands) in 1990, Paul de Ruiter (born in 1962)
started his research concerning energy efficient buildings. Before
opening his own office in 1994, he worked with the greatest architects in Canada, Australia and the Netherlands. The building as a
source of energy is portrayed in his doctoral « The Chameleon
Skin ». The most important hypothesis was that in a near future,
buildings should become energy producers instead of energy
consumers. Today this hypothesis is more relevant than ever
before and with modern technology, it is also within reach. More
than that, buildings can be made entirely self-sufficient, where

they can operate independently from the regular supply of electricity and water.
The practice of Paul de Ruiter Architects designs buildings and
cities in which people must feel well and secure, without detriment to the environment and the economic viability. Architecture
must favour people and mankind, which is the real basis of efficient innovation. « We work from the principle that research and
innovation are necessary to create buildings that are not only
aesthetically beautiful but also energy saving, sustainable, healthy and - not to forget - pleasurable to be in. In all our projects we
strive for the highest sustainable standards in regards to: limiting
energy, water use, pollution and waste, while improving health,
wellbeing, ecology and management processes. Consequently, we
are experienced in meeting high standards of leading sustainability certificates like BREEAM and LEED ».
Among the myriad of projects from residential projects to large
developments - university buildings (Erasmus University), theatres
(Bijlmerparktheatre), office buildings (headquarters for TNT, UPC,
Sigmax, Fluor), underground carparks (Museumpark, Veranda

carpark) and civil works (dikes and bridges) - which are the
constant principles in all these very diversified projects in terms
of scales, specificities and materials? Create energy savings and
sustainable buildings with an important architectonic quality.
« As architects, we are always aware of the sun and the orientation of a building in its surroundings. Daylight is so evident that it
is hardly talked about. However, too little attention is paid to the
total combination of daylight, heat, energy and sustainability, the
value of daylight for people’s health and the possibility of taking
advantage of the sun.
In today’s complex world the architect should operate as a spatial
analyst: he or she should have a keen eye on design and needs to
cooperate with every other discipline in order to achieve the best
possible building projects. And, at the same time, be aware of the
environment. For example, a Green Lease Contract is an excellent
method to make sure all the parties will lay down contractually
binding agreements for achieving a building’s energy-saving and
environmental objectives. I believe that human inventiveness and
creativity can solve present and future problems in the world.
For me, this means that I feel I have the capacity and therefore
also the responsibility to make the world better, and this is the
main driving force in my work. Architecture serves people and
humanity is my opinion: I would love to see this more reflected in
contemporary architecture ».

e Vlascherm, Amsterdam
New sustainable office building on Valschermkade, installed in a former steel
workshop and entirely renovated and transformed into a new multi-business
building for creative enterprises. This building is characterized by sustainability,
daylight and flexibility. The building has ultra-sustainable installations and an
intelligent exterior following the sun’s movements. This building literally and
figuratively gives energy.

Paul de Ruiter Architects est l'un des bureaux
d'architecture les plus axés sur l’environnement
en Europe. Depuis ses tout débuts dans les années
1990, l’agence a été pionnière dans les domaines
de la durabilité et depuis, est un grand défenseur et
praticien de la conception architecturale durable.
Deux ans après la fin de ses études à l'Université technique de
Delft (Pays-Bas) en 1990, Paul de Ruiter (né en 1962) commence
ses recherches sur les bâtiments économes en énergie. Avant de
fonder sa propre agence en 1994, il travaille avec les plus grands
architectes au Canada, en Australie et aux Pays-Bas. Le bâtiment
en tant que source d'énergie est décrit dans son doctorat intitulé
«The Chameleon», en 1992. L'hypothèse majeure était que dans un
futur proche, les bâtiments devaient produire de l'énergie plutôt que

d’en consommer. Aujourd'hui, cette hypothèse est plus pertinente
que jamais et, avec la technologie moderne, est également à portée
de main. Plus que cela, les bâtiments peuvent être entièrement
autosuffisants, ils peuvent fonctionner indépendamment de la
fourniture régulière d'électricité et d'eau.
L’agence de Paul de Ruiter conçoit des bâtiments et des villes
dans lesquelles les gens se sentent à l'aise et en sécurité, sans
porter préjudice à l'environnement et à la viabilité économique.
L'architecture doit servir les gens et l'humanité - qui est la base
réelle de l'innovation efficace. « Nous travaillons à partir du principe
que la recherche et l'innovation sont nécessaires pour créer des
bâtiments qui ne sont pas seulement esthétiquement beaux, mais
aussi durables, économes en énergie, sains et agréables. Dans tous
nos projets, nous recherchons les normes les plus élevées en ce qui
concerne la durabilité: limitation de l'énergie, de l'utilisation de l'eau,
de la pollution et des déchets tout en améliorant la santé, le bien-être,

easy to reach by car and public transport, with a healthy climate inside, intelligent
and flexible use of space and the availability of relaxation and concentration areas.
Thanks to the exterior quality of the building, but even more to the building’s
internal functions.
4 /Villa Kogelhof (Zeeland, NL), 2013
PORTRAIT
This hotel will be a highly sustainable four-star-plus hotel on the Amstel river banks
with more than 300 rooms all foreseen with every luxury and comfort, designed with
the Mulderblauw Architects office, without causing a negative impact on our planet.
The primary focus for achieving this is to close every possible cycle in the fields of
energy, waste, water and the use of materials. The goal is to realize the first LEED
Platinum hotel of Europe.

otel Amstelkwartier, Amsterdam, 2014
The main idea behind the architecture of the villa is that it should be nonintrusive
on the environment. Therefore a large portion of the house, with spaces like the
parking garage, where places into the earth, readable by the pond above the
volume. The living area in contrast is hovering rectangular above the underground
volume, in a glass box in the air, minimizing the footprint on the ecological area but
maximizing the view on the natural surroundings and the North Sea.

With an elliptical and dynamic shape, this multifunctional building combines on the
façade wooden slats and vertical aluminium strips placed against the steel and
glass sections of the façade. Its outside aspect varies permanently. During the day,
the striking shape of the building makes it clearly recognizable, while during the
night it is an urban signal with its colour, which can be altered to fit the occasion.

Parmi la multitude de projets allant des projets résidentiels aux grands
développements : des bâtiments universitaires (Université Erasmus),
des théâtres (Bijlmerparktheatre), des immeubles de bureaux (sièges
de TNT, UPC, Sigmax, Fluor), des parkings (Museumpark, parking
Veranda) et des travaux de génie civil (digues et ponts). Quels sont
les principes constants de ces projets, particulièrement diversifiés
en termes d'échelle, de spécificités et de matériaux ? Créer des
économies d'énergie et des bâtiments durables qui contiennent une
qualité architectonique élevée. “En tant qu'architectes, nous sommes
toujours conscients du soleil et de l'orientation d'un bâtiment dans
son environnement. La lumière naturelle est tellement évidente qu’il
est difficile d’en parler. Cependant, on accorde trop peu d'attention
à la combinaison entre lumière, chaleur, énergie et durabilité, à la
valeur de la lumière du jour pour la santé des gens et à la possibilité
de profiter du soleil.
Dans le monde complexe d'aujourd'hui, l'architecte doit fonctionner
comme un analyste spatial : il ou elle doit porter un regard éclairé
sur la conception et être disposé à coopérer avec toutes les autres
discipline afin de réaliser les projets de construction de façon optimale.
Et, en même temps, être conscients de l'environnement. Par exemple,
un contrat de bail « vert » est un excellent moyen de s'assurer que
toutes les parties fixeront les accords de nature contractuelle pour la
réalisation d'économies d'énergie et des objectifs environnementaux
d'un bâtiment. Je crois à l'inventivité et la créativité humaines qui
peuvent résoudre les problèmes actuels et futurs. Pour moi, cela signifie
que je sens que j'ai la capacité et donc aussi la responsabilité de rendre
le monde meilleur, et c'est la principale force motrice dans mon travail.
L'architecture au service des gens et de l'humanité. Je serais ravi de
voir cette idée mieux reflétée dans l'architecture contemporaine. »

literary meanings nor artistic gestures »

Cette résidence unifamiliale située non loin de Moscou est l’un des
projets emblématiques de l’agence russe Atrium. Entourée de pins, la
maison dispose de belles vues sur trois côtés. La décision de refermer le côté nord, sans intérêt, a amené l'idée de plan plié créant
une perméabilité entre les espaces intérieurs et extérieurs. Ainsi, le
bois revêtant la façade se retrouve appliqué à l’intérieur également.
Certaines fenêtres, notamment dans la salle de bains, sont réalisées
comme des coupes dans le plan plié. Les architectes ont spécialement
travaillé sur l'épaisseur de ce plan pour le rendre élégant et fonctionnel, comme la poutre du toit au-dessus des terrasses d'environ cinq
mètres de long. Le thème du pliage se retrouve dans l’implantation
des dépendances (abri de voitures, bain russe) qui ressemblent au
bâtiment principal. Le dernier bâtiment est en partie caché dans le
paysage, de sorte que son toit fait office de plate-forme d’observation,
se transformant en patinoire, l’hiver venu. Ce projet s’inscrit dans
la démarche de l’agence Atrium, lauréate de différents prix d'architecture en Russie. Vera Butko et Anton Nadtochiy ont l’habitude de
fuir les stéréotypes et d’accorder beaucoup d’importance aux détails.
« Nous croyons que l'architecture est un art abstrait de la forme et
de l'espace, se plaisent-ils à affirmer. Nous n'aimons pas parler de
significations littéraires et de gestes artistiques. »

This single-family residence situated not far from Moscow is one of
the emblematic projects of the Russian architecture studio Atrium.
Surrounded by pines, the house has a beautiful three-side view. The
decision to close the uninteresting north side brought the idea of a
folded plan creating permeability between inside and outside spaces.
So the wood covering the façade is also placed inside. Some windows particularly in the bathroom are made like cross-sections of
the folded plan. The architects have especially worked on the plan’s
thickness to make it look elegant and functional, like the around five
meter long roof beam above the terraces. The folding theme can also
be found in the installation of the annexes (car-ports, Russian baths),
which look like the main building.
The last building is partly hidden in the landscape, so that the roof
becomes an observation platform, and even a skating rink in win-

Diplômé de l'Institut d'Architecture de Moscou, Sergey Makushev est
l'un des premiers spécialistes de la conception assistée par ordinateur à Moscou. C'est lui qui a créé les premiers projets intérieurs
virtuels en Russie. Sergei Makushev travaille en duo avec Maria Serebrianaya depuis plus de 20 ans, à l’époque de leur vie estudiantine.
Maria et Sergey partagent la même vision et le même style, Maria
s’occupant plus de design et de décoration, créant ses propres collections d’intérieur et de mobilier, tandis que Sergei possède une
solide expérience en ingénierie, technologie et construction. Cette
parfaite alliance a mené à la création du bureau d’architecture
DOM-A qui a déjà réalisé plus de deux cents projets, en rénovation
et conception d’appartements, maisons, bureaux, restaurants, etc.
Toutes ses réalisations démontrent une finition raffinée et un apport
de haute technologie. Pour cet appartement triplex destiné à une
famille de quatre personnes, il a été décidé d'un intérieur contemporain, élégant, fonctionnel et confortable, avec un accent sur la
conception écologique. Des pièces de vie aux couleurs apaisantes. Au
dernier niveau, la plus originale rappelle un chalet suisse, en altitude
de quelques dizaines de mètres, non pas dans les montagnes mais
sur la ville. L’architecte a réellement créé un concept d’habitation,
avec une cheminée, une piscine, un sauna et une terrasse, à partir de
matériaux naturels. La combinaison de la pierre et du bois donnent
un sentiment d'une maison à la campagne. Seules les vues majestueuses sur la Moscou rappellent que ce chalet est situé ni plus ni
moins à trente mètres sol, en haut d’un complexe d'appartements.

Graduated from the Moscow Architecture Institute, Sergey Makushev is one of the first specialists in Moscow of computer-aided
design. He was the architect who created in Russia the first interior virtual project. Sergei Makushev works together with Maria
Serebrianaya in a creative duo since their student time for more
than 20 years. Maria and Sergey both share same vision and
style, while she conducts more of design and decoration, creating interior and furniture collection of her own, and he holds the
exquisite expertise in engineering, technologies and construction.
This business and creative co-operation resulted in their founding
DOM-A architecture studio that produced more than two hundred
projects in renovating and designing apartments, houses, offices,
restaurants, etc. All these realizations involve a refined finishing
and a high technological input. For this four person triplex apartment, it was decided to make a contemporary, elegant, functional
and comfortable interior, with an emphasis on ecological design.
Living rooms are designed with soothing colours. The most unusual
one on the last level recalls a Swiss chalet, situated twenty or thirty
meters higher, not on the mountain but above the city. The architect
has really created a living concept with a fireplace, a swimming pool,
a sauna and a terrace all this in natural materials. The combination of stone and wood gives the feeling of a countryside house. Only
the outstanding view on Moscow reminds that this chalet is located
thirty meters above ground level, on top of a flat complex.

The façade covering uses an old-fashioned cut Hainaut Blue Stone, which
endows the façade with energy, while the solar protection has been
achieved using panels with a blue milled finish mounted on a steel frame,
as though this was the place where the cladding opened.
The aim of the design strategy was to display this old 14th-century oven
as part of a living eco-museum. Separating the bar and the main entrance
and gently emerging at the street side, a massive Hainaut Blue Stone rock
completely envelops the visitor, enhancing the sensation.

On one of the facades, the stone slab layout is impressive to create a
random pattern, contrasting with the regular framework of the glass
facade. It was decided that this section of the façade would use the first
slices of the Hainaut Blue Stone blocks, a material which is usually left aside.
Very sober and carefully structured, the terrace is built of rough-sawn Hainaut Blue Stone (format 80X80 cm). The designer has highlighted the contrast
in texture between the almost smooth finish of the rough-sawn stone, the
ruddy look of the scorched stone and the dark shade of the overspill.

Créant un signal fort et très visible dans son environnement, ce
nouveau bâtiment est la première occasion pour l'Université de Baltimore de démontrer à grande échelle son intention de poursuivre
des stratégies qui luttent contre le réchauffement climatique. Le
bâtiment, qui unit pour la première fois sous un même toit les salles
de classe, les bureaux des professeurs, les locaux administratifs et
la bibliothèque de droit, optimise intelligemment les espaces intérieurs selon leur fonction et leur occupation. Il capte un maximum de
lumière naturelle à l'intérieur, conserve et réutilise les ressources
en eau et propose un système de façade flexible et performant pour
répondre à tous ces objectifs. Il engage également la communauté en
offrant des espaces qui relient les personnes à la fois les unes aux
autres et aux cycles de la nature (lumière, air, eau). La forme se compose de trois volumes en L qui articulent les fonctions du programme.
S’élevant à travers le cœur du bâtiment, un atrium étroit - une « tige
verte » selon l’architecte - relie les trois volumes et comprend un hall
d'accueil, des cafés et des salons.
Prévu pour obtenir le statut LEED Platine, le bâtiment utilise un certain nombre de stratégies étroitement intégrées pour atteindre 43%
d'économies de coûts énergiques par rapport à un bâtiment traditionnel. Le concept répond à la fois aux différentes exigences du
programme et spécificités climatiques de Baltimore : des étés humides et des hivers tempérés.

Creating a strong signal and quite noticeable in its environment, this
new building is the first opportunity for the Baltimore University to
demonstrate on a large scale its intention to continue its strategies
to fight global climate warming. The building, uniting for the first
time under the same roof classrooms, professors’ offices, administrative spaces and a law library, cleverly maximizes the interior
spaces in relation to their function and occupation. It captures inside
a maximum of natural light, keeps and reuses water resources and
proposes an efficient and flexible façade to comply with all these
objectives. It also commits the community when offering spaces
connecting people between each other and also to the life cycles
(light, air, water). The building’s form consists of three interlocking
L-shaped volumes, which articulate the functions of the building program – classrooms, offices, law library. The administrative volume
includes a legal clinic for the students, the professors and the local lawyers. Rising up through the heart of the building, a narrow
atrium - a « green stalk » says the architect – connects the three
volumes and includes a welcome hall, cafés and lounges.
Foreseen to obtain the Platine LEED certification, the building uses a
number of closely integrated strategies to achieve energy cost savings of 43% compared to a traditional building. The climate concept
responds both to varying programmatic requirements and to Baltimore’s climatic specificities: humid summers and moderate winters.

Accumulating prizes and distinctions, the agency,
Dethier Architecture in Liège manages to brilliantly
master contemporary expression, technology, site
integration and the use of sustainable materials.
Founded in 1992 by Daniel Dethier, architect engineer and cityplanner, the design office Dethier & Associés becomes in 2010
Dethier Architecture. Advocating a very open concept, he favours
contacts between architecture and city planning, landscape,
engineering, botany, city agriculture, art, etc, thanks to a multidisciplinary approach. The office developed its activities thanks to the
calls for candidates for the medium-size European public tenders.
Nowadays he is less active in this field as he regrets the present
evolution of these public tenders towards less quality. First of all
the selection criteria for the participants are based more on the
quantity of references instead of their quality. Secondly, the final
decision, although this is not official, depends more and more on

the fees level. Finally, most of the deals in the construction activity
are made on the basis of public tenders, the prices proposed by
the bidders being often lower than the market prices
Daniel Dethier believes that the city-planning regulations in Wallonia are generally obsolete, as they don’t take account of the
technical evolution (insulation, double flux ventilation, green
roofs, solar captors..) nor the societal changes (eg the increase of
single-parent families needing different types of accommodation).
Today it is impossible to get a permit without exemption, and the
latter seem often to be arbitrarily granted by politicians or civil
servants. Daniel Dethier wishes to have a regulatory system well
adapted to the situation and the present needs.
Daniel Dethier’s work aims to a deep contextual anchoring. His
projects want to respect the public spaces, the rural or urban environment and particularly the heritage. By doing this, he clashes
with the « present system » described here above which he considers completely obsolete and causing the impoverishment of the

action is perceivable in his first houses but also in his more recent
realisations implementing the most advanced technologies.
In all buildings, clearly appears a concept without preconceived
ideas. This approach underlines a critical vision permitting to
bring innovative solutions in the city and countryside housing typology as well as giving an added value to the heritage, the cultural
infrastructures or the arrangement of public spaces. In most of
the projects, there is an underlying will to make one understand
that advanced techniques are perfectly compatible with the respect of the environment.

quality works and the development of non-perennial and sustainable realizations. In this respect approach, the techniques are
serving architecture by bringing more well-being, comfort and
special emotions to the users. They are a tool and not an objective.
That’s why they are discreet and sometimes even invisible.
To develop an architecture representing the economical and social
progress, Daniel Dethier thinks that the ultimate solution is the
change of mentalities. And this, in the interest of looking at the future
whilst preserving the heritage, but also by adding value to contemporary architecture, image of a modern, dynamic and creative
society. His numerous works, mainly designed in Liège, are unanimously recognized at international level. Right from the beginning,
his projects integrated the principle of sustainable development
when considering the perennity of the constructions. This course of

Daniel Dethier considère que les règlements d'urbanisme en vigueur en région Wallonne sont généralement devenus obsolètes,
dans la mesure où ceux-ci ne tiennent compte ni des évolutions techniques (isolation, ventilation double flux, toitures vertes, capteurs
solaires …), ni des évolutions sociétales (par exemple l'augmentation du nombre de familles monoparentales qui font évidemment
évoluer les typologies de logements). Aujourd'hui il est impossible
d'obtenir un permis sans dérogation, et celles-ci semblent souvent accordées arbitrairement par les responsables politiques ou
administratifs. C'est pourquoi Daniel Dethier, souhaite un cadre
réglementaire qui correspond à la situation et aux besoins actuels.
Le travail de Daniel Dethier vise un ancrage contextuel profond. Ses
projets s'établissent dans le respect des espaces publics, de l'environnement qu'il soit rural ou urbain, et particulièrement du patrimoine.

Lieu symbolique au cœur de Liège, l’édifice néo-classique de la
Société Libre d’Émulation a fait peau neuve. Le chantier de sa rénovation démarre en 2011 après neuf années d’études, de mises
au point en tous genres et plus de 150 maquettes. Les nouvelles
interventions sont d’une discrétion absolue. Le verre, le béton et
le bois, largement utilisés dans leur expression, accompagnent et
valorisent le bâtiment existant. « Dans cette parcelle hybride, nous
avons agi comme au théâtre, par unité (temps, lieu) et amené les
matériaux à leur limites. » Gardée à l’identique en rappel de son
histoire, la façade principale s’adjoint un volume entièrement vitré
qui intègre notamment le foyer des artistes en suspens sur l’espace public. Les architectes ont misé sur la perméabilité du lieu
avec la ville, multipliant les perspectives. Par le regard, le passant
s’approprie le lieu rendu à la ville. Le complexe compte une grande
et une petite salle, un espace d’exposition, une salle de répétitions
et de nouveaux dispositifs d’accueil. La grande salle est étudiée
en tenant compte des exigences pointues régissant l’outil théâtral (courbe de visibilité, isolation et diffusion acoustique, confort
des spectateurs) et du respect de l’héritage patrimonial du lieu.
Il en résulte la création de gradins libres. En forme de main profondément ancrée dans le plateau de scène, ils libèrent de toute
accroche les parois verticales et le balcon classé. Les architectes
soulignent le travail remarquable de tous les intervenants aux différents processus constructifs.

Symbolic place in the heart of Liège, the neo-classical building of the
Free Emulation Society has been given a new life. The renovation site
starts in 2011 after nine years of studies, updating and 150 models.
The new interventions are very discreet. Glass, concrete and wood, by
their specific qualities, add value to the existing building. In this small
hybrid plot, the architects worked as in a theatre by unity (time, place)
bringing the materials to their limits. Kept identically as a reminder
of its history, the main façade receives an extra entirely glazed volume
integrating in particular the artists’ centre overhanging the public
space. The architects have multiplied the perspectives, banking of
the permeability of the place to the city. By a look, the pedestrian
feels close to this new available site. A special glazing, similar to the
one used for photovoltaic panels, diffracts the light. « The play on the
glass panels is in fact a light play. We wanted to change the look, says
Pierre Hebbelink. » The complex has a great hall and a small one, an
exhibition space, a rehearsal room and new welcoming system (restaurant, bar, library). The great hall is studied taking account of the
strictest requirements for a theatre today (visibility curve, insulation
and acoustic diffusion, spectators comfort) and of the respect of the
place’s heritage legacy. As a result you have free tiers. In the shape
of a hand strongly anchored to the stage, they liberate the vertical
partitions and the classified balcony. The architects underline the
remarkable work done by the cabinetmakers, by all those who have
participated to the different phases of the construction.

focused on Liepaja Seaside Park - a historically
exclusive retreat area in Liepaja, Latvia - you
are presented with an opportunity to express
your vision for the revitalization and further
development of the ‘Bath House’, designed by
Paul Max Berchi in 1902. The design brief is
flexible, open for modifications and improved
development strategies. The proposal should

nature. It should be a cabin that allows them
to connect and enjoy nature - the daylight,
