If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix It
I apologize for the bad grammar in the title, but I am sure many of us
have heard this expression at one point or another. It literally means that if something is working adequately well, leave it alone. But it can also represent an attitude of complacency that says mediocrity is good enough. Of course, it may be
true that we can try to fix or improve something too much and even obsess over
trying to make something or someone perfect – I admit I can be a perfectionist! –
but I believe too many of us have this kind of complacent attitude in our Catholic
Faith. In other words, we Catholics can too easily become lazy in our faith, sethttp://elcerebrohabla.com/wp-content/uploads/
tling for doing the minimum for our spiritual life. We can have a self-satisfied

approach of simply continuing to do what we have always done. It is as if we
were saying: “I am just fine the way I am; I don’t need any help and I don’t need to change. Just leave things the
way they are and don’t rock the boat.”
I have encountered this kind of mentality throughout my priesthood when people tell me things like:
“Father, I haven’t been to confession for twenty years (or sometimes even more), but I don’t need to confess. I’m
doing all right; I haven’t killed or robbed anyone” – as if that is all the Gospel calls us to! I will sometimes respond to that kind of comment by saying, “Well maybe I should talk to your spouse, your kids or your neighbors
to see what they think!”
This complacent attitude is often demonstrated by the Jewish religious leaders
in the gospels as they obstinately refuse to listen to Jesus; it is also reflected in our
Easter season readings from the Acts of the Apostles as the Jewish leaders continually resist the compelling message of the followers of Jesus. At that time, the new
Christian community was overflowing with wonders, miracles and an incredible
sense of community and dynamism. But the Jewish establishment was having
nothing to do with it. They became defensive and interpreted the invitations and
preaching of Jesus’ followers as insults; they considered the growth of the new
Christian community as a personal attack against them and their faith.

Truth be told, this is the ongoing attitude of any complacent or stagnant person or

group – religious or otherwise. For example, even in the secular world, which
businesses thrive in the marketplace? Those that are willing to push themselves toward excellence and are willing
to challenge themselves to grow. It is the same with churches: less than five percent of the churches in the U.S. are
growing. The rest are shrinking and even dying, and that includes our Catholic Church nationwide!
In the gospels, the first word out of Jesus’ mouth when he began his public
ministry was “repent” which basically means “change your life.” That is not a word ‹Ä|äx |Ç t ÅtÇÇxÜ ãÉÜ@
or a need aimed only at “those big sinners out there;” it is something that is also
à{ç Éy à{x _ÉÜw? áÉ tá àÉ ux
needed in our own hearts and lives. Every one of us is in need of repenting; there is
yâÄÄç ÑÄxtá|Çz? |Ç xäxÜç zÉÉw
always some part of our life that is not entirely given over to the Lord. Unfortunately, it is a tendency of our human nature to seek comfort instead of growth. We
ãÉÜ~ uxtÜ|Çz yÜâ|à tÇw
have to be willing to challenge ourselves to grow and to push ourselves toward exzÜÉã|Çz |Ç à{x ~ÇÉãÄxwzx
cellence. God is honored by our excellence on a personal level and on a parish
level.

So, my brothers and sisters, as Christians we must always seek growth and

excellence in all we do for the Lord; we are never done in deepening our relationship with God, in trying to serve others better or in trying to become better persons.
If there is anyone at Holy Rosary who thinks “I don’t need to change or grow; I’m
just fine the way I am,” that is a huge hint that you really need to grow and mature in your faith; you need to repent!
Let us work hard together to make ourselves and Holy Rosary better.

EL PODER DEL ESPÍRITU
¿Reconoces el sacramento que se celebra en la
primera lectura de los Hechos de los Apóstoles?
Cuando Pedro y Juan impusieron las manos en los
que habían bautizado, recibieron el Espíritu Santo
en el sacramento de la Confirmación. La lectura de
la primera carta de Pedro, y el pasaje del Evangelio
de Juan, consideran los resultados de nuestro bautismo y confirmación. Pedro nos recuerda que lo
más probable es que tengamos que sufrir por nuestras creencias.
En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos habla claramente sobre el Espíritu Santo, llamándolo
“Defensor”, que estará junto a nosotros para defendernos. De manera muy significativa, Jesús promete
a sus discípulos y a todos nosotros, “No los dejaré
huérfanos”. Nunca ha dejado a sus seguidores huérfanos. Siempre hemos tenido al Espíritu Santo para
guiarnos.

Despiértate a...Jesús; Despiértate a...tu fe católica; Despiértate a...dejar tus redes.
Si No Está Descompuesto, No lo Arregles
Esto es un dicho muy conocido en inglés. Literalmente significa que si
algo está funcionando adecuadamente bien, no lo toque. Pero también puede
representar una actitud de pereza que dice que la mediocridad es lo suficientemente bueno. Por supuesto, puede ser cierto que podemos tratar de arreglar o
mejorar algo demasiado e incluso obsesionarnos con tratar de hacer perfecto a
algo o a alguien– ¡admito que soy un perfeccionista! No obstante, creo que
muchos de nosotros tenemos este tipo de actitud mezquina en cuanto nuestra fe
católica. En otras palabras, nosotros los católicos podemos llegar a ser perezosos en nuestra fe, conformándonos con hacer lo mínimo para nuestra vida espi- http://elcerebrohabla.com/wp-content/uploads/ForchinoCouch-Potato-1000X1000-web-645x645.jpg
ritual. Podemos quedarnos auto-satisfechos y simplemente seguir haciendo lo
que siempre hemos hecho. Es como si estuviéramos diciendo: "Estoy muy bien como soy; yo no necesito ninguna ayuda y yo no tengo que cambiar. Por favor, deje las cosas como están y no me molestes."
Me he encontrado con este tipo de mentalidad a través de mi tiempo de sacerdote cuando la gente me
dice cosas como: "Padre, yo no me he confesado durante veinte años (o incluso a veces más), pero yo no necesito
confesarme. Estoy bien; yo no he matado ni robado a nadie" – ¡como si eso fuera todo a que el Evangelio nos
llama a hacer – no ser asesinos o ladrones! A veces yo respondo a ese tipo de comentario diciéndole: "¡Bueno, tal
vez debería hablar con su cónyuge, sus hijos o sus vecinos para ver lo que piensan ellos!"
Esta actitud de medianía a menudo se demuestra por los líderes religiosos judíos en los evangelios, ya que obstinadamente se niegan a escuchar a Jesús; y también se refleja en nuestras lecturas en la temporada de

continuamente al mensaje convincente de los seguidores de Jesús. En ese
momento, la nueva comunidad cristiana estaba llena de maravillas, milagros y un increíble sentido de comunidad y dinamismo. Pero los dirigentes de los judíos no querían tener nada que ver con ello. Se convirtieron en
la defensiva e interpretaron las invitaciones y la predicación de los seguidores de Jesús como insultos; consideraban que el crecimiento de la nueva
comunidad cristiana era un ataque personal contra ellos y su fe.

A decir verdad, esta es la actitud continua de cualquier persona o
grupo mediocre o estancado – de índole religiosa u otra. Por ejemplo, incluso en el mundo seglar, ¿cuáles negocios prosperan en el mercado? Aquellos que están dispuestos a esforzarse
hacia la excelencia y están dispuestos a desafiarse a sí mismos para crecer. Es lo mismo con las iglesias: menos
de cinco por ciento de las iglesias en los EE.UU. están creciendo. El resto se han ido reduciendo; incluso unas se
están muriendo, ¡y eso incluye a la Iglesia Católica en este país!
En los evangelios, la primera palabra que sale de la boca de Jesús cuando ‹dâx ÄÄxäxÇ âÇt ä|wt
comenzó su ministerio público era "arrepiéntanse," que básicamente significa

"cambia la vida". Esa no es una palabra o una necesidad dirigida sólo a "esos
àÉàtÄ tzÜtwÉ? ÑÜÉwâv|xÇwÉ
grandes pecadores por allá"; es algo que se necesita también en nuestros corazones y vidas. Cada uno de nosotros está en la necesidad de arrepentirse; siempre

hay alguna parte de nuestra vida que no esté totalmente entregada al Señor. LaÇtá ÉuÜtá ç vÜxv|xÇwÉ xÇ xÄ
mentablemente, es una tendencia de la naturaleza humana buscar la comodidad
en lugar del crecimiento. Tenemos que estar dispuestos a desafiarnos a nosotros
vÉÇÉv|Å|xÇàÉ wx W|ÉáA‹Ê
mismos para crecer y esforzarnos hacia la excelencia. Dios es honrado por nues;VÉÄÉáxÇáxá D?DC<A
tra excelencia al nivel personal como al nivel parroquial.
Así que, mis hermanos y hermanas, como cristianos, debemos buscar
siempre el crecimiento y la excelencia en todo lo que hacemos para el Señor;
nunca terminamos en profundizar nuestra relación con Dios, en tratar de servir mejor a los demás o en tratar de
ser mejores personas. Si hay alguien en el Santo Rosario que piensa "Yo no necesito cambiar o crecer; estoy
bien tal como soy," es un gran indicio de que realmente necesitas crecer y madurar en tu fe; ¡necesitas arrepentirte! Trabajemos duro juntos para mejorar a nosotros mismos y al Santo Rosario.

St. Vincent de Paul Food Drive
Our volunteers at St. Vincent de Paul need our
help. In order to keep up with the demands of our
struggling economy, they are asking for donations of
specific items each month to help restock their shelves
to better serve those in need. This ministry distributes
food every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from
9:00am to 10:00am at the Holy Rosary Gymnasium.
Each bag is identical and carefully packed with nonperishable items.
This month, they need the following items:
Pork & Beans 15oz.
Canned Corn 15oz.
Canned Green Beans 15oz.
