It’s election time! At the March meeting, Dick
Mongtomery was nominated for President, Tony
Neira, Henry Nunez, Gilberto Ojeda, and Rick
Warring for Vice President, and Lee Washburn for
Treasurer. Tony and Rick have since declined.
At the April meeting, we will take any additional
nominations, and then you’ll vote. The winners
will be announced and sworn in and will take
office right away.

At the meeting we will also have a show ‘n tell
and our monthly contest (an Open), but no
program (unless you count the Election) and no
raffle.
This is my last column as prez! I am not running
for office, as I have another book I really need to
finish. It’s been a real honor to serve you as
president and ModelFiesta contest director.

In their own words...
Ferrari’
Ferrari’s Fiat Transporter

Since I was a boy, this truck always
attracted me so much. I had opportunity
to see one in person in 2002, although it
was not like this, (only three models were
produced, and the three are different in
some way). I
took many pictures. One day
in 2009 I was
looking nostalgically some
photographs
when I found
this truck.
I immediately
wanted to
make a model
of it, but after exhaustive internet search,
I found there was no kit available. So I
decided to build one by "scratch build".
And so I entered a Ferrari car web site and
asked if anyone had any information on
this vehicle. The next day I got an answer
from a modeler from Florida telling me
that he had information with the actual
measurements of the truck as well as a
picture of the truck profile. He sent me
the information by email and the first
thing I did was convert the measurement
of vehicle 1: 1 to 1:24 scale. I enlarged the
picture he had sent me to the proportion
of the scale and thus got the right size to
start building. I began to take measures
and record in the blueprint all my annotations using the original drawing.
What worried me the most was the
wheels, and as I looked for kits on the
internet (I spend many hours at the computer in the wake of this project) I found
that the AMT Chevy Astro truck kit had
the wheels very similar to the ones for my
project, so I bought the kit and with that
got the wheels.
That encouraged me a lot.
Using the
measures of the
wheelbase I
built a generic
chassis as I had
no reference to
the original Fiat;
I even wrote to
the factory to
see if they could share some information,
but they never answered me.
Once I built the
chassis with appropriate measures, I
could begin building
the cabin using the
measures from the
blueprint and they
were in fact according to the general
structure of the
model. Using 0.40
plastic sheets and
Evergreen strips of
different measures I
started to give the basic shape, also used
putty to form the curved parts and give a
finish to the different components of the
bodywork. Using different pieces of
"Pandora's box" I could assemble the
needed areas for the interior cabin.
As these vehicles carried the Ferrari cars
to competitions to the different circuits in
Europe, they also had an area in the back
with some basic tools for emergency repairs on racetracks, so for that I use the
Fujimi kit with different tools and appropriate equipment, considering using
equipment that was standard at that time,
no modern equipment! As it was dark
inside the "shop", I decided to light it; and
for that goal I search for model trains on
internet and found a kit of superminiature LED lights with switch and
battery, installed in a way that could not
be seen.
For the final touch, I used two different
shades of red lacquer paintings. The darker: Model Master Flame
Red # 1965R; and the clearer: Bright Red Tamiya TS
49. A railway modeler from
Phoenix printed the decals
for me because a special
printer (ALPS) is required to
print the white color and he
had that hardware.
The rest is history. It was in
2009 that I started with the
idea of the model and I
finished it in 2014 - of
course not always working on it, as I had
other projects in between. Now I'm working on three cars that will go on the bus,
the way they used to do it in the 60’s.
