THE INTERNATIONAL MEET OF THE INDIAN OCEAN
The Meet of the Indian Ocean always takes place at the end of the year and is highly appreciated by lots of
swimmers from all over the world.
The heat of the tropical summer, the luxuriant beauty of the island natural sites, the friendly atmosphere,
have drawn many famous athletes during the last two decades. And very much so since 2005, for they are
now welcomed by the local authorities and the mayor of Saint-Paul in a magnificent aquatic centre
overlooking the ocean (The IMIO had the honor to make the opening of it).
Athletes from France, of course, from Stéphane Caron to Alain Bernard, Frédéric Bousquet and Camille
Lacourt; from Catherine Plewinski to Laure Manaudou. Numerous French records have been beaten at the
Meet: the 200 m freestyle and 200 m I.M. by Solenne Figuès; the 50 m backstroke, the 50 m and 100 m
butterfly by Diane Bui Duyet; the 200 m breaststroke by Sophie de Ronchi; the women 4x100 m Medley
and the men 4x200 m Freestyle by the CN Marseille teams…
Athletes from Russia (Selkov, Korneev, …), Germany (Buschschulte, Steffen, …), The Netherlands (Van den
Hoogenband, Veldhuis, …), Italy (Rosolino, Magnini, …), Ukraine (Lisogor, Klochkova, …), Romania (Mocanu,
…), Sweden (Alshammar, …), Austria (Rogan, Jukic, …), South Africa (Van den Burgh, Schoeman, …), …
Some of these athletes have participated in the Meet many, many times, like Martina Moravcova and
Diane Bui Duyet; and it so happened that Diane took the 100 m Butterfly European record from Martina
during its 20th edition.
Our neighbours and friends from Madagascar, Mauritius and the Seychelles Islands are of course most
welcomed. And no doubt this new encounter following the Seychelles Islands Island Games 2011 will be
much awaited for.
Moreover, the Reunionese audience take great pleasure in regularly welcoming the synchronized
swimming team from France, who, no doubt, highly appreciate this coaching session at this time of the
year.
This Meet has another specificity which is very dear to all the members of the local Board for Swimming:
along with the local authorities and some private partners without the help of whom it wouldn’t exist, it is
also financially supported by all the Reunionese clubs. Many, many thanks to all!
May this 23rd edition of the IMIO be the reflexion of the previous ones: a source of motivation for the local
swimmers, and a display of what our beautiful island can offer best.

Invitation Cards
Medalists at the Beijing Olympics, as well as the
individual medalists at the 2011 World
Championships in Shangaï, will be the guests of
honor of the 23rd International Meet of the Indian
Ocean and thus, will be awarded an invitation card,
provided they are amongst the first ten athletes to
let me know their wish to participate in the Meet
(the cards will be given on a first come-first served
basis).
This invitation card includes:
. Free air passage Paris / Reunion Island / Paris
(Dec. 25th / Jan 02nd);
. Full boarding and lodging for 7days;
. Free use of rented cars.
Moreover, one complimentary air ticket Paris/
Reunion Island/Paris will be granted to all the clubs
and National selection teams counting more than 10
athletes.
