Spectacular vineyards cover these mountain slopes settled more than 300 years ago by the
Huguenots, who brought with them their age-old French wine and food culture. This is a
valley rich in history centred around a picturesque village of friendly, welcoming people.
The diverse spectrum of visitor accommodation ranges from internationally renowned

In the village you will find bespoke fashion boutiques, jewellery studios and unique crafts,
art and antique shops and galleries. Huguenot Street, the aptly named main street, is lined
with coffee shops and restaurants. Less than an hour from Cape Town Franschhoek is the
perfect base for your exploration of the entire Cape Winelands region.

French Heritage
After the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in France in 1685, when Protestantism was
outlawed, hundreds of so-called Huguenots fled their homeland, 277 of them arriving
by ship at the Cape of Good Hope. Many of them were given land by the Dutch colonial
government in a valley called Oliphantshoek (Elephant’s Corner) – so named because
of the vast herds of elephants that roamed the area. Soon after they settled here, it
became known as Franschhoek (French Corner).
This heritage lives on today with the Huguenot monument standing proudly at the top
of the village. The museum nearby chronicles the history of those brave pioneers, with
each of the nine original Huguenot farms having its own fascinating story to tell.

Excellent Wines
Driving into Franschhoek you will notice that most of the farms still bear their original
French names and are usually complete with a spectacular Cape Dutch homestead,
towering oaks and rolling vineyards. There are a variety of cellars, from small boutique
wineries that cater for those in search of something unique, to large cellars that offer
organized tours and conducted tastings. Award-winning wines range from plump reds
to elegant whites and delicious sparkling wines, or Méthode Cap Classique. Visitors
to the valley can also experience the Franschhoek Cap Classique Route, the only Cap
Classique Wine Route in South Africa. More than half the wineries in the Franschhoek
Wine Valley produce MCC wines. This, together with the annual Franschhoek Cap
Classique and Champagne Festival, makes this the premier destination for Méthode
Cap Classique wines in the Cape Winelands.

Things to do
Franschhoek is located within the heart of the Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve, an
Internationally proclaimed UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The area has a unique natural
environment and cultural history, boasts an abundance of animals and plant species, and
hosts a number of important water resources. Visitors can enjoy numerous walks and
mountain biking trails in the surrounding mountains. For a wine tour with a difference
hop onto a horse or a bicycle and visit a few of the Vignerons de Franschhoek. For a
more memorable adventure join one of the many knowledgeable guides in the area.
Also experience the diversity of this beautiful valley by visiting the Franschhoek Rond
en Bont Route. Our various communities are eager to share their heritage and the rich
cultural history of the valley. Dwarsrivier, a neighbouring region of Franschhoek, and just
one of the many attractions on this route, shares many freedom stories with the valley.
Covering a large area of the Franschhoek Wine Valley, the route also includes communities
such as Wemmershoek, Bosbou, Groendal, Mooiwater, Tyotyombeni, neighbouring farms
as well as the town Franschhoek. The route is available throughout the year and offers
visitors a diverse range of cultural and modern experiences, which include wine tastings in
a shebeen, arts and crafts, traditional cuisine as well as a social history museum.
In true French spirit Franschhoek is a village that loves a good celebration. If you are
in the area in July, we encourage you to visit Franschhoek over the weekend closest to
Bastille Day (14th July) when the village celebrates its French heritage with a wine and
gourmet fair, and much more. Franschhoek also boasts a number of other exceptional
wine, gourmet, art and outdoor festivals and events that lure visitors with their style and
joie-de-vivre throughout the year.
