A Note from your Board of Directors
Hello Neighbours!
Greetings from the staff and volunteers here at the Lord Roberts Community Centre. We hope you all had an
amazing winter and had many opportunities to visit us and use our two outdoor rinks! A big thanks goes out to all
volunteers who made our winter season a success!
With 2016 well underway, it’s time to get registered for our programming here at the club. Flip through these pages
and find something you like, then get involved! We love having visitors here, and there is something for everyone! Be
sure to note the registration dates and times and contact us with any questions.
We work hard to provide Lord Roberts residents with fun, healthy and engaging programs throughout the year, but
we can’t do it without you! Of course we rely on parents to coach soccer, t-ball, and other sports. But that is just
the tip of the iceberg. We are always on the lookout for volunteers with all kinds of skill sets. For example, the Board
of Directors is hoping to recruit a volunteer coordinator this year. This role includes recruiting and working one-onone with new volunteers and helping them find the perfect role. Other roles we are looking to fill include House and
Grounds Manager, Canteen Workers, Children’s Programmers, and even Bike Mechanics.
As our club is run by a volunteer board, we are often limited in what we are able to do by how much time volunteers
can offer. So it follows that the more volunteers we have, the more the centre will be able to accomplish. Imagine
a community club that could be open seven days a week from dawn till dusk. It is possible! But, it can only
happen with everyone’s help. They say it takes a community to raise a child, and we agree. And when an amazing
community (just like ours) comes together, we will be able to do that and more.
Please feel free to contact me at any time via email at [email protected] to talk about how you can get more
involved in your community centre.
Have a great spring and summer!
Jaret Olford, President, LRCC

Volunteer
Profile:
John Robertson
By Joel Trenaman
John Robertson is passionate—about
volunteering, sponge hockey and family.
Lord Roberts got to see all three on
display this past winter as he helped
make ice at our community centre
and led free, twice-weekly “spongee”
games for the whole family.
The founder of Canford Sports has
been providing free programs for youth
and families for decades. Having come
from a family of 18, Robertson knows
firsthand how difficult it can be for
families to afford to participate in the
more costly sports like hockey.
Growing up in Fort Rouge, he and his
nine brothers took up the new, relatively
equipment-free sport in the 1950s, the
beginning of a life-long commitment. In
2015, Robertson was honoured by the
City and the Broadway Neighbourhood
Centre, where a plaque declares the
community as the birthplace for the
official rules of sponge hockey in the
1970s.
Robertson is a sought after speaker
and mentor for youth around the city,
and also loves football and volleyball.
He is an energetic, busy man: despite
welcoming his twelfth grandchild late in
2015, he didn’t miss a beat out on the
rink at LRCC!
